  • My computer won't allow me to restore the factory settings. What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to restore my computer to the factory settings, but it won't allow me to erase everything from the hard drive. It won't even allow me to delete me as a user. What am I doing wrong?

You can't erase a volume while booted from it. Start up from the installation DVD, erase the volume, and reinstall.

  • Won't Allow Me to Restore...

I was updating my iPod and then it said "error has occured."
I re-did it and the same thing happened.
I also restarted my computer and tried it again but it sill won't let me do it.
Now, I can't do anything with my iPod because my iTunes keeps saying that I need to restore my iPod before doing anything.
    Help anyone?

If you still have the 4S, delete enough stuff from the phone that it will fit on the 16GB phone you're replacing it with. Then back it up, and restore that backup to the 5. You can't selectively restore. If the backup is too big to fit on the new phone, then you can't restore from that backup.

  • TIme Machine won't allow me to restore

I backed up my computer on the 8th of February and I went about 12 days before backing up again. But I realized some problems with a few changes I made, and now I can not restore to this point, or any point to be exact. My Time Machine, even if I backed up 20 seconds ago will not allow me to restore to that point. Any Suggestions

    Johnathan,
Time Machine cannot be used to "regress" to some point in the past, at least not the way you are thinking. You are thinking of the Windows "restore point" functionality, and that is not what Time Machine does.
You can restore files or folders that you might have mistakenly trashed, provided these files still reside in at least one backup. Or, you can restore your entire installation.
This latter requires that you first boot to the Leopard install DVD (or your "Software Restore" disk, if your computer came with Leopard), then erase the internal hard drive, and finally that you use the installer's "Restore From a Time Machine Backup" function.
This allows you to choose from the range of complete backups that Time Machine has made, and to restore that entire backup, OS, applications, user data and all. When the process is complete, your computer will restart, and you will be right back to the point where that backup was made. This can be used in conjunction with the restoration of a later version of your HOME folder to "roll back" to an earlier version of OS X, but retain all of your current user data, for example. Doing this sort of thing quickly becomes complicated, however.
    Does this information help you?

  • Won't allow me to restore, "iPod is corrupt"

I have an 80gig iPod Classic 5th gen and I dropped it from a fairly low distance with a case on, it's barely scathed and yet it gave me a red "X" and told me to restore my iPod. I plugged it into my computer(Windows XP) to restore it and after I do so, it gives me the message "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I have restored many times and it gives me the same error. I've also reinstalled my iTunes, updated, and everything, and gives me the same error. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you still have the 4S, delete enough stuff from the phone that it will fit on the 16GB phone you're replacing it with. Then back it up, and restore that backup to the 5. You can't selectively restore. If the backup is too big to fit on the new phone, then you can't restore from that backup.

  • HT4972 previously used apps won't work after system restore?ipod touch 2nd gen.?

My son forgot his passcode so I had to restore his ipod touch, 2nd gen.  After the restore, many of his apps no longer work.  He had Netflix, Facebook, Angry Birds.  They now all say they require ios 4.3 or 5.0.  Does anyone know how to get these apps back on his ipod?  thanks!

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • IPhone USB Receiver won't allow iTunes to restore

My iPhone 4 (5.1.1 OS) won't go into recovery mode and is stuck in DFU mode, even when trying to hold the home and hold buttons for ten seconds, letting go of the home button and holding the hold button. Every time I try to restore in iTunes, it will prepare the iPhone for restoration, and will immediately give me a 1600 or anything between 1600-1604 error (USB disconection errors) when I never physically disconnected it. I've tried it on multiple computers and multiple USB cables.
iTunes does not recognize the phone unless it is in DFU mode, and my phone will not go into recovery mode.
I'm passed the desire to get my full backup onto the phone now, and would like to at least just have a functioning phone so I don't have to spend another $200.
    Thanks for all help.

  • I am using an iphone 3Gs and Itunes won't allow me to restore it?!?! help me fix my black screen of death!

Ok, I am trying to restore my iPhone 3Gs to 5.0.1 and when I do, it looks like it is going well until it says that is it preparing to restore, it keeps me stuck at that spinning bar and then after a while it gives me the error 1601 unknown error has occurred.  I have tried looking on Google for over 3 hours now trying to find the answer to my problem and sadly I cant find one, I am trying to restore my IPhone because earlier I was playing with it and it ran out of battery and I let it change and walked away form it, I came back 1 hour later and it was still at the boot logo of apple, I waited 2 hours and it did nothing, just stayed with the boot logo.  I then put it into DFU mode and it appears in iTunes as in DFU mode and can be restored but like I said above that it just gives me an error.  I have looked into Google and tried every way possible and found out that I may have the black screen of death.  If you have this problem and found a way other than getting a new iPhone, please contact me on this page because I am not in the mood to buy a new iPhone because this one has an expired warranty.
Also i have tryed all the things in the error support page and nothing works, uninstalled itunes completely and did all that other stuff but still the same problem and i have not found a way to fix this.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Disk Utility won't allow me to restore from image

I've been keeping pretty good backups for a while now and I have started using SuperDuper to keep whole DMGs as well as using Time Machine. Today I planned on restoring from an image I had made. However, when I go to use the Restore function in Disk Utility, it lets me choose the disk image but will not let me drag the volume on the destination field.
I've been having startup problems all day and I eventually got a 9972 error in Disk Utility.
I'm having trouble finding my install disks and this is my only real option for today. I can't find much about this on Google either.

There's no point in using a disc image for a backup. Better to simply clone to a backup drive then maintain the clone with incremental updates. Use a normal backup utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.
As for the 9972 error you will find it's a really difficult error to correct. See the following:
How to Deal with a -9972 Error
    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima
The error message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" is a serious filesystem error in the Mac OS X Core Foundation. The problem can also lead to other critical errors such as "Keys Out of Order," "Invalid node structure" and/or "Invalid sibling link." The causes and scenarios vary. Troubleshooting a solution may depend upon computer configuration and whether the -9972 error is accompanied by other critical errors. This issue can also lead up to a kernel panic. If the error occurs when an external FireWire device is connected, disconnect it until you verify the device's compatibility.
    Symptoms:
In most cases, you are unable to restart from Mac OS X.
    * A volume is grayed out or not mounted with or without a kernel panic.
    * A folder with a flashing question mark may appear.
    * A bad partition map may be reported.
    * A target disk mode solution may not work.
    * Most likely, Disk Utility, Norton Utilities, TechTool and DiskWarrior cannot fix the issues.
    * The high level disk format (Standard format) may unable to perform.
    * You may unable to re-initialize the hard drive.
    * A disk physically malfunctions in the worst case.
Example of an accompanied error message:
DiskWarrior normally fixes 1 to 6, but cannot fix errors 7 to 10 if the symptoms are very bad. There is no definite case.
    01. Volume check failed
    02. Invalid B-tree Header
    03. Invalid map node
    04. Invalid extents entry
    05. Invalid clump size
    06. Incorrect block count file
    07. Invalid node structure
    08. Overlapped extent allocation
    09. Keys Out of Order
    10. Invalid sibling link

    Possible causes:
    * Third-party FireWire device or enclosure, or other peripheral devices.
    * Third-party mass storage drives or PCI card issues.
    * Incompatible third-party kernel extensions.
    * Mac OS X installer disc is improperly treated.
    Solutions:
If possible and needed, back up data before troubleshooting. Methods (4) and (5) are for Power Mac desktop computers other than G5 models. The best bet is method (4) if you encounter multiple bad errors.
    1. Unplug the power cord. Disconnect all third-party hardware except Apple keyboard and mouse before you start.
    2. Do NOT re-install any third-party software/hardware until you completely solve the issue(s) and carefully investigate the compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3.x you install.
    3. If another critical error "Invalid sibling link" is detected at any phases, disconnect and reconnect all internal power cords and data cables for hard drives and any ATAPI device. To do so, you may need to read the computer's CIP Instructions in advance. Normally, you do not need to remove third-party RAMs.
    Method 1:
    (1) Start up from Mac OS X 10.3.x Panther Full Install CD or DVD.
    (2) Re-initialize and re-partition the hard drive. RECOMMENDATION: Select "Zero all data" option if "Invalid node structure" or "Keys Out of Order" error is detected.
If this method is of avail, go to Method 2 or greater.
    Method 2:
    (1) Start up in Mac OS 9.2.2 and shut down the computer.
    (2) Start up from a copy of a Disk Warrior bootable CD for Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (3) Run DW to fix the damage(s).
    Method 3:
    (1) Unplug the computer.
    (2) Find a second ATA drive and jumper it as MASTER. Jumper the hard drive in question as SLAVE. Verify the jumper pin settings.
    (3) Install Mac OS 9.2.x system on the MASTER drive, and update it to Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (4) Start up from Mac OS 9.2.2. Re-initialize and re-partition the damaged hard drive with Drive Setup using the "Zero all data" option. Unplug the computer and reconfigure the jumper pin setting on the repaired drive for MASTER and the second drive for SLAVE.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition the repaired drive to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
You may want to try starting up from Mac OS 9.2.x Full Install CD instead of from (2) to (4).
    Method 4:
    (1) Find a desktop computer that has an ATA controller PCI card (SCSI environment) and has two hard drive bays. This will make your damaged drive appear as a quasi-SCSI hard drive. Mac OS 9.2.2 must be pre-installed on the computer. I recommend a host computer that installs an Ultra DMA/xxx or xxx (ATA-x) interface equal to or better than the damaged drive with backwards compatible.
    (2) Set the host computer's primary drive as MASTER and your damaged hard drive as SLAVE and install the damaged drive in the second drive bay of the host computer. Verify properly configured jumper pin settings in advance.
    (3) Start up the host computer from Mac OS 9.2.2. Launch the "Drive Setup" utility. Re-initialize the damaged disk on the second drive using the "Low level format" option. It may take hours but less than "Zero all data" option. Note: Normally, a low level format with a quasi-SCSI drive takes much less (30 - 40%) time than an ATA configuration drive. Note that "Low level format" fixes all difficult logical damage.
    (4) Put the fixed disk back in your computer's drive bay. Re-configure the jumper pin setting to MASTER before you place it into the drive bay of your computer.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition it to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
Note that Panther's Disk Utility does not implement a "Low level format" option.
    Method 5:
If Method 4 does not work or fix the damaged drive, let me know. You may need an advanced technique to fix it if the drive is physically not a problem.
    OPTION:
Purchase a known good hard drive that conforms to your computer's ATA specification. Fix the damaged hard drive some other time. Nowadays, prices of hard drives are inexpensive.

I just up graded from 4s 32g to a 5 s 16g and during the process of restoring a message pops up saying that the new device does not have enough space. How can I fix this?

If you still have the 4S, delete enough stuff from the phone that it will fit on the 16GB phone you're replacing it with. Then back it up, and restore that backup to the 5. You can't selectively restore. If the backup is too big to fit on the new phone, then you can't restore from that backup.

  • ITunes won't allow disk use of Reset iPod

I'm using a 40Gb click-wheel iPod for music and as a hard disk for file transfer, which has behaved fine up until now.
Just recently it took to skipping through Audio Books so I plugged it into my computer, up comes iTunes (latest version) and I hit Reset - iPod is reset, all the music loaded back onto it, but now when you set iPod options within iTunes they're not remembered.
I want to turn off auto-boot of iTunes with iPod detection, and turn on disk use. When I make these changes, iTunes takes ages to close, and when its re-opened the changes are not made.
    Help would be greatly appreciated

The tracks are not eligible for icloud; they are personally recorded lectures.  If I try to manually add them to a playlist I get the warning about the playlist being removed from icloud and only available on my computer.  Is this what I need to do in order to have both my recorded lectures and the rest of my library in itunes match?
unsure of bit rate...but tracks are not in the cloud.
