  • IDVD 5 Pioneer DVR 109 and OS 10.4.3: Double layer support ?

My Pioneer DVR 109 (non Apple firmware) hasn´t been recognized by iDVD as a double layer drive. I heard rumors that from 10.4.3 on many non Apple drives will be supported by the system and indeed when clicking the profiler it now says APPLE SUPPORTED instead of VENDOR SUPPORTED. Unfortunately, when opening iDVD there is still only the 4 GByte option available. Any thoughts or ideas what this means?
    Thanks and regards
    Wolfgang Fogel

If you happened to buy your 109 from MCE Technologies, or some other vendor that provided an installer to provide iDVD native double layer support, use the uninstaller supplied by the vendor (or call their tech support department).
If I understand it properly the file that was modified under these schemes was System/library/frameworks/DiskRecording.frameworks/Version/A/Frameworks /DiscRecordingEngine.framework/Version/A/Resources/
VendorSupport.drprofile. The original should have been renam ed,saved and replaced with one from the vendor.
Now you will need to restore the original.

  • DVR 109 wont read disks

Recently found a old G5 (DB 2.0 - June 2004) in a storage room.  Which has the DVR-107PB superdrive installed; web searching shows that later versions shipped with the DVR-109.  Coincidentally, I happen to have a DVR-109 in an old PC too ;o)
The firmware on the DVR109 was already upgrade to 1.58 (the latest from Pioneer (back in the day)).
I'd like to replace the installed 107 with the 109, however, when installed in the G5 the 109 wont read any burned or blank disks... just spits them back out.
Dual Layer would be nice, anyway to get the Apple A912 firmware?

Hi, tough to tell what the problem is but $33 my be the simple solution...

  • 8x Pioneer SuperDrive only burns 2x - firmware update?

I purchased two iMac 20" 2.0GHz models a couple months ago. One has the Pioneer DVR-K04L SuperDrive, the other a Matshita UJ-845.
The Pioneer drive burns most 16x, 8x, or 4x DVD+-R media I have tried at only 2x. In fact, the ONLY media I have gotten to burn at 8x is Verbatim 8x DVD-R media. 16x Verbatim DVD-R media only burns at 2x. The same 16x media, and many other brands of 8x media, all burn at 8x in the Matshita UJ-845 drive.
Is anyone aware of a firmware updater for the Pioneer drive to enable it to burn 8x rated media at 8x? Burning 8x media at 2x is unacceptable. The fact that the same 8x media burns at 8x in the Matshita UJ-845 drive points to a problem with the drive.
In my research, I have found that Apple is responsible for the firmware on this Pioneer OEM drive, not Pioneer. Now a Pioneer fireware updater may work and enable faster burn speeds, but basically, this is a problem Apple needs to address and fix by releasing a drive updater for Pioneer equipped iMac G5's.

I had NO LUCK burning DVD's with the Internal Imac G5's Superdrive - my External FW with a DVR-109 burns everytime no matter what the brand DVD's - at the advice of a few Imac G5 owners I bought VERBATIM 8X DVD's (the real Verbatim Branded ones) and now my Imac burns fine everytime - try Verbatim or Apple Branded DVD's you may find your troubles disappear.... Apparently Apple DVD Burners are real finicky about media - I just burned about 8 DVD's with my Internal and no problems!..
Mine is the Revision A with the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825
    I'm using these:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817130955
and they burn at the full speed too (4X) where before 2X was all I got and then 90% had problems finishing the burn

  • Pioneer Superdrive

    Hi,
Apple Care kindly replaced my faulty Superdrive, which was a Panasonic. The new drive is a Pioneer one:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05:
    Firmware Revision: I518
    Interconnect: ATAPI

    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

What sounds odd is that the old drive, as far as I know, supported DVD +R. Could somebody, who still has the original Panasonic drive, go to "About this Mac" and send me the Tech Specs via this thread.
    Thanks,
    Jurgen

    Hi Jürgen,
Yep. It does appear that your new Pioneer SuperDrive has limited DVD-Write capabilities. I have the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K04L (presumably the previous version to your new drive) that shipped on my computer and it seems to have a wider range. Here are the specs:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04L:
    Firmware Revision: D441
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)

    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
    Strange. Hope this helps, though.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

  • Firmware for DVR-109?

Where do you find the firmware update for a Pioneer DVR-109. I found it on the pioneer website but it was a download for windows. I have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3 (early 2005 model) and It wont recognize Memorex 16x media in Toast 7. It will only allow me to burn @ 12x. The Apple rep at Comp USA said that all media is compatible with PowerMacs these days. I need help. Thanks.

  • Self replacing Superdrive DVR-104 Any Tips - Have You Replaced It Yourself?

In a previous post I mentioned probably replacing the original DVR-104 Pioneer Superdrive myself. Has anyone done this on their own?
I have the complete Apple eMac repair manual, and it shows the complete procedure for: (in order)
    • Removing the outer eMac housing shell
    • Disconnecting the Power Button connection
    • Procedure for discharging the CRT (Using Apple Tool)
    • Removing the "Faraday Plate"
    • Removing the Apple Pioneer Superdrive
With the right Apple tools, precautions, and "repair" skills to
take on a repair of this nature, I am willing to replace the Superdrive myself. Especially in light of the fact that an Apple repair shop has quoted me over $450.00 to do this very same repair.
It seems pretty straight forward, and after buying the Apple CRT discharge Tool and a new Pioneer DVR-104 (in the next week or so), I'm planning on making the change.
Has anyone here ever replaced the Superdrive themselves? Can you offer any suggestions or tips that might make things go any smoother?
I will greatly appreciate your input. Thanks

I recently upgraded my eMac which is 2004 USB 2.0 model to a Pioneer 111D 16x Superdrive. Basically you follow the manual directions for removing the drive and then you plug in the new drive in its place and put your eMac back together. I found that turning the case 45 degrees makes it a lot easier to detach and re-attach the power button cable. I bought my drive from eBay for about $60 and it even came bundled with Tiger for eMac. I just swapped the drives, put the eMac back together, and the drive booted the next time I turned my computer on.
It doesn't take $450.00 worth of expertise, I'll tell you that. You just need the allan keys to take apart the case, a phillips head screwdriver, and maybe a flathead screwdriver to help you remove the Faraday plate. In replacing your superdrive, you really won't be coming in contact with the CRT capacitors so just make sure to touch a metal part in your compter to prevent static discharge like you would when installing memory. The only real tip I can give you is to keep your hands off the circuit board as best you can--you don't want to break it or get it dirty from the oils on your skin--thankfully the mounting rail for the drive makes this extremely easy.

  • Pioneer model DVR-111 BK is compatible inside the Power Mac G4

    Hi,
currently I am working with Power Mac G4 (dual processor) and Mac OS X v10.3.3 as operating system. I would like to know if the DVD writer Pioneer model DVR-111 BK is compatible inside the Power Mac G4.
I wait for your kind answer and best regards.

Hi, Manuele, and welcome to the Discussions!
The DVR-111 is a highly-compatible drive. Like with most non-Apple supplied burners, to enable burn support and use the burn capabilties of Apple's iLife applications using OS X 10.3.x, you'll need to downoad and install Patchburn 3.

  • Pioneer superdrive problems / flashing firmware

I hope someone can help me. I have an alu imac 2007 and after 13 months (and without extended applecare) the dvd drive packed in. I got it replaced by a local apple agent, but i supplied the drive myself, a new pioneer dvr ka06 from a macbook. Here is the problem. The drive works fine but the dvd has to be pushed all the way in to actually take the disk, its a massive pain. I assume that it is set up like this as the drive is closer to the edge of the case in the macbook compared to the imac. According to pioneer the firmware may be the problem. The firmware on the new drive is q609, and on the old drive is q624. Is there any way to flash or update the drive to solve this problem or does anyone else have any ideas.

It depends (obviously) on how Pioneer flashes the firmware. Some drives can flash on a disc that has the update on it, others require a program run (usually PC based) to trigger the update sequence.
I'd spend some time on the Pioneer site and maybe call their support... RTFM?

  • Blank DVDs for Apple Superdrive DVR-106D?

I'm soon going to need some more blank DVD disks for my 17" iMac but there's a problem. As I understand it I can only use 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW discs.
    Is this right?
The problem is not many places do these now (I've found some 4x DVD-Rs but 2x DVD-RWs are rarer than rocking horse poop).
However reading through this forum I found the bit about the Superdrive software upgrade. It suggests that I can use faster discs without breaking the drive but that they'll only burn at 1x speed. Is that correct? Can I use, say, 16x DVD media in my drive without destroying it?
Is there anything else I should know? The reason I ask is that in the past I've tried to burn DVDs for use in a domestic DVD player and I've only found one type of disc that does it reliably (RiDisc 4x DVD-Rs which now, of course, are no longer available).
As ever any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Many of the older drives required you use the same speed media for the drives in your machine or they would show a error message.
As time has gone by, the Drive manufactures and the Media manufactures were made aware of this problem. In many cases they released Firmware Updates for many of the drives used in the computers to enhance there performance.
Here is a Media guide to use when purchasing DVD Media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Read it carefully there is a wealth of information in reguard to Media in general.
Now let's talk about high speed media.
Now since the advent of 16X high speed media, many users have older machines that are only capable of burning at 1x, or 2x. Some of the media that is 16X will not work whereas others will. The key here is to read the packaging on the Media. It will clearly tell you that the media will burn at 1X,2X,4X,8X, and 16X. The key here is using high quality media your burner will burn at the highest rate it is capable of, using the higher quality media where it will not with cheap media.
I also recommend that you use DVD-R Media it is the most widely recognized and used across the board.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
As time goes buy and you become more familiar with your Optical drive and it's capabilities then you can branch out and expieriment with different Media Format's.
Remember that not all players and computers will recognize and play Some media's.
I personally use Maxell 16X DVD-R media. This is one of the highest in quality and is not farmed out by them to another maker as some are and burns fine at all speeds, This will be determined by your Optical Drive in your machine.(Read the Packaging on the Media)
Good Luck, Oh by the way I have never had a bad burn with this media.
    Don

  • Pioneer dvdrw dvr-k15 driver

Does anyone know how I can download the drver for a Pioneer dvdrw dv-k15 ????

You shouldn't need a driver. What makes you think you do?

  • Can someone tell me EXACTLY how to flash my Pioneer 110D DVR drive?

Sorry to be a pest, but I bought into Mac 15 years ago because I wanted simplicity, not lots of commands!
OK, I found the Flash upates for my 110D drive, downloaded and unzipped, and got 2 files: RB100111.137 and RB100011.137 [both showing as MS Exel files!]
I tried using the little DVRFlash program that came also. Well, whatever I seem to do, following what few instructions I can find, I either keep exiting the program after nothing happens, or I get a msg that it can't find the files I type in. Will someone give a 55 yo man a break here... go ahead and talk to me like a child. I just can't figure this out... all I know is, a month ago I could burn DVD+DL, then I upgraded to 10.4.6, and now I can't.

Got help off-line... all a matter of pointers... thanx to my secret Mac angel!

  • Pioneer Superdrive no longer reads Apple Brand DVDs!

Just recently i have noticed my G5 has stopped accepting Apple Branded dvds. All others work fine. I think it started after I upgraded to 10.4.4.
Since I upgraded I have noticed the drive makes a lot more 'clicks and *****' as well as the fan underneath the drive spins alot faster and makes more noise than before. Now when I put a pre-burnt Apple brand DVD into the drive, its sort of grunts, waits a few seconds then spits it out.
Curiously the dvds mount in my ibook with 10.4.4.
I think 10.4.4 has shafted the optical drive firmware is there any way I can reload the firmware?

Before this all happened, I could burn to dvd no problem.
BUT I totally know what you mean about having a problem ejecting any disk!
The grinding noise and the attempts by the iMac to spit them out on it's own and then trying everything I could think of to get it to eject... frustrating and a bit scary knowing something is definitely wrong.
It probably should have clued me in that things were only going to get worse.
I've got the extended care, my hard drive has already been replaced (that after only a few months) and now I've got to pack this baby up again and wait for the optical drive to be replaced.. oh no...
I agree, you should get a replacement without charge even if you don't have extended care as it is obviously defective, just like mine.
Hey thanks for replying, I was beginning to think this post was in complete vain.

  • Quicksilver and dvd-r

i have a quicksilver 733 mhz which is running on os 10.3.9 my issue is the dvd-r which is a pioneer dvd dvr 109 is coming up saying that disc burning isn't supported. I did an upgraded from 10.3.2 to 10.3.9 has anyone else experienced this problem with the os upgrade.

I received 2 Pioneer DVR-112D drives today and tried to install them. I saw an old post from another person who experienced the same problem I did. The drive is just over 5" wide (the actual drawer that slides out) and the opening on my Quicksilver is too small (4-13/16"). I saw a few responses about removing the plastic bezel on the drive, but the problem is the actual drawer is too wide Even if I took the plastic bezel off, wouldn't the drawer still be 5+" wide? I must be doing something wrong because all these other posts are talking about software compatibility and needing the patch you described. If I take the bezel off the drive will it extend further through the opening and clear the Apple plastic that has the rounded edges? I don't want to send them back if they're useable. Thanks!

  • Reasonably new PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D will NOT RECOGNIZE CD's

I bought a new PIONEER DVR-111D drive to replace my old superdrive about 5-6 months ago.
All was fine and good until about 2 weeks ago when it was suddenly unable to recognize CD's. Audio CD's, blank CD's, my highly valued "must insert to play" Halo CD, etc...
I noted this problem originally when trying to burn a playlist on a CD and Toast would pop out an error message about "Wrong Media Type". They worked fine before. This only happens on CD's (and yes, I tried a few different brands) - not DVD's.
    DVD's (Dual Layer & -R & +R) read/write/burn fine.
But when I put a CD in the tray and close it, out spits out the disc (and I've tried several different types) about 20 seconds later.
I've tried every option I could find to fix this issue including...
    http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=440595&Main= 439419
(trashing com.apple.kernelcaches, trashing Extensions.kextcache and when those suggestiosn didn't work, trashing ~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb - all to no avail)
I've uninstalled and then reinstalled Patchburn. Didn't work.
I used Preferential Treatment to fix my User Prefs and System Prefs.
    Doesn't help.
Now Toast hangs whenever I try and insert a CD while its running - but when I use Toast's "Recorder Settings" to identify the drive it says CD-RW Yes and CD-R Yes.
I really can't understand why this is happening. Isn't the laser that writes to DVD's the same as the one for CD's? If so, where is this "recognition" issue (can't recognize CD's but has no problem with DVD's) happening?
Here's the System Info for this drive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D
    Revision: 1.23
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
I'd be very grateful for any help on this issue.
    G4 - Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi-
There are two separate laser/laser lens for each of CD and DVD media. You could have lost the CD side. Could also be a blob of dust in the way.
Could try cleaning, or, try and get warranty replacement.
