Items "date modified" column when viewing files as list in finder

I'm not really sure if I can change this viewing option, but i will give it a try:
when viewing files as list in finder, "yesterday" items "date modified" column shows up with the term "yesterday", while this does not happen for "today" items, where what shows up is just today's date and not the term "today".
I found this rather confusing, since it is not immediate: i.e. if I want to check for items modified today at a glance, i need to pick today's date from a ist with a number of different dates. As a matter of fact, it's a way easier when checking for yesterday's items.
Suggestions anyone?
Thanks!

toygal -- welcome to the Aperture user-to-user forum. iPhoto was designed with you in mind. Aperture is 100x more complicated (and no faster). I strongly recommend that you revert to iPhoto and use it. Compared to Aperture, it will bring you more pleasure and cause you much less frustration. Whoever told you that Aperture is faster not only was wrong, they failed to take into consideration the hours that you would have to practice to become comfortable with it.
Here are some threads which briefly touch on the difference between iPhoto and Aperture -- use the search to find many more.

  • Finder Window - Date Modified Column Keeps Changing

When I open a Finder window, change the size of the "Date Modified" column then close the Finder window, the next time I open the same Finder window, the "Date Modified" column will compress the size of the column.
Why isn't Finder 10.9 maintaining my column changes?
Any assitance or insight whould be appreciated.

I solved the scrunched Date Modified column header in a similar fashion but added the Date Added field, which fixed the width of both Date columns.
After doing so, I now find both Date-oriented columns display and read dynamically the actual date and time.
I'm now looking for a solution to that issue, explained here:

  • Date modified changes when you do not save?

We have recently upgraded our old 10.2 server to a new Xserve with 10.4 server.
After copying the admin files across we have noticed that if anyone opens up a Word document (say) then closes without saving, because no changes were made, then it updates the file modification date? Am I missing a setting on the server? Does anyone else have this problem? We use date modified to search for files so it is quite important.
I have turned off autosave (in Word) feature and tried again so it is not that.

I'm answering my own question here, but I've been told on macosx.com that this behavior is a bug that will be fixed in 10.4.4, which should be out this week. It'll be interesting to see if that's true (and it will be interesting to see if Apple leaves this reply up).
Still, that doesn't answer why our shop has one machine that doesn't have this problem while the other nine do. Any ideas? We have some machines running 10.3.9 and some with Tiger, but the one machine that doesn't have the issue is running 10.3.9.

New user here.  Trying to import iPhoto 9.4.2 libraries into Aperture 3.4.3 as referenced files. When accessing File>Import>Library, it finds the iPhoto library just fine, but then imports it as Master files. No option that I can find to leave the photos in place on the file system.  All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.  What?

All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.
That has been true for the previous Aperture versions. Now Aperture simply treats the original image files exactly as they are in the imported library. Referenced images will stay referenced, managed will be imported as managed. But you can always relocate the imported managed images afterwards by using "File > Relocate".

  • Is there a way to change settings for "date modified" to reflect true file changes instead of changing upon viewing files? This is not just a Word issue.

My team and I open and view files all the time without editing them but the date modified changes anyway. This gets especially troublesome when we are working on files on each others desktops remotely. Is there any way to change these settings to reflect only changes instead of views, moves, and the like? I've read similar posts that have all reference Microsoft products but that is not the case. Our systems here operate in this way regardless of application/file type.

This discussion is going on in another thread where there has been more responses, one fix and a work-around noted. Please go here to read them: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18157324?ac_cid=142432#18157324

  • When Exporting a Crystal Report to Excel format all of the dates get changed when viewed on Mac version of Excel

We're using Crystal Reports 10 and when we export a report from the Crystal Viewer using either the MS Excel 97-2000 option or the MS Excel 97-2000 (Data Only) option, the date columns on the report appear as expected on a PC version of Excel, however, most of the users at our company use Macs so when they open the same report on the Mac version of Excel all of the dates show up as 2011 or 2012 dates eventhough they are suppose to be 2008 dates. We've tried to just open the report after the export process and then do a "Save As" but get the same result. The date columns all appear to be formatted as Date. The dates on the Crystal Viewer appear as expected when viewed on a Mac. The users are running Excel for Mac OS-X Service Release 1.0. Any idea why this may be happening and is there a solution to this problem? Thanks!

    Hi,
To clarify, are you currently using the Mac version of Crystal Reports Viewer 2008 which you downloaded from here?: http://www.sap.com/solutions/sapbusinessobjects/sme/reporting/viewer/index.epx

  • List data validation failed when creating a new list item but does not fail when editing an existing item

    Dear SharePoint Experts,
    Please help.
Why does my simple formula work in Excel but not-work in SharePoint?
    Why does this formula...
    =IF([Request Type]="Review",(IF(ISBLANK([Request Date]),FALSE,TRUE)),TRUE)
...work in Excel but fail when I try to use it in SharePoint?
The intent of this formula is the following...
If the field "Request Type" has the value "Review" and the field "Request Data" is blank then show FALSE, otherwise show TRUE.
SharePoint saves the formula, but when a list item is saved where the formula is implemented, (under List Settings, List Validation), SharePoint does not, say anything other than that the formula failed.
Note that the "list data validation failed" error only happens when I am creating a new item-- the formula above works just fine when one is trying to Save on the edit form.
    Can you help?
    Thanks.
    -- Mark Kamoski

    Dear Jason,
    I appreciate your efforts.
However, it seems to me that this statement of yours is not correct...
"If it meet the validation formula, then you can new or edit the item, otherwise, it will throw the 'list data validation failed' error, it is by design".
I believe this is NOT the answer for the following reasons.
When I create a new item and click Save, the validation error is "list data validation failed".
When I edit an existing item and click Save, the validation error is "my custom error message" and this is, I believe, the way it needs to work each time.
I think, at the core, the error my formula does not handle some condition of null or blank or other default value.
I tried a forumla that casts the date back to a string, and then checked the string for a default value, but that did not work.
I tried looking up the Correlation ID in the ULS when "list data validation failed" occurs, but that gave no useful information because, even though logging was set to Verbose, the stack trace in the error log was truncated and did not given any
    good details.
However, it seems to me that SharePoint 2013 is not well-suited for complex validation rules, because...
SharePoint 2013 list-level validation (NOT column-level validation) allows only 1 input for all the multi-field validation formulas in a given list-- so, if I had more than 1 multi-field validation rule to implement on a given list, it would need to be packed
into that single-line-of-code forumla style, like Excel does. That is not practice to write, debug, or maintain.
SharePoint 2013 list-level validation only allows 1 block of text for all such multi-field validation rules. So that will not work because I would have something like "Validation failed for one or more of the following reasons-- withdrawal cannot exceed
available balance, date-of-birth cannot be after date-of-death,... etc". That will not work for me.
The real and awesome solution would simply be enhancing SP 2013 so that column-level validation forumlas are able to reference other columns.
But, for now, my workaround solution is to use JavaScript and jQuery, hook the onclick handler on the Save button, and that works good. The only problem, is that the jQuery validation rules run before any of the column-level rules created  with OOTB
SP 2013. So, in some cases, there is an extra click for the enduser.
    Thanks,
    Mark Kamoski

  • Why folder "Date Modified" doesn't reflect files and subfolders?

    Hello.
    I have a folder with a "Date Modified" of March 2, 2010.
When I open the folder, I see subfolders and files with more recent dates (...like April 7, 2010).
Isn't the folder "Date Modified" supposed to change with the changing of contents held within the folder?

Hi. So here goes my story. I'm allways keep my MacMini turned on at night. So I work late and re-start working at the day after. And than... voilá: the files I modify are displayed as "Today" modified, instead "Yesterday". During my work, sometime, the file list is refreshed and starts to display the correct date modified. At this middle time, some bizarre lists appears, like a "Today" after "Yesterday" in the list - the order becomes messed as I modify another files.
In my case, webdesign & programming, I use the FTP (Fetch) app to browse local files inside apache's root folder, and Fetch never mess with date modified listing. I's a way out if I'm hurry.
The point is the system is not given high priority to finder's file list as before, becouse this can slow down your mac if there is a lot of windows opened. They should put a refresh button when they made this modification, but those who work in programming knows this thing - fix this bug here, make another one somewhere...

  • How to change "Date Added" to "Date Modified"in Open a File dialoge

Ever since updating IOS to the latest version the option to sort by "Date Modified" in the open a file dialog has been changed to "Date Added". How can I change this back to "Date Modified"?

Hmm, in OpenSolaris and Solaris Express, the date format is a preference in the Nautilus Preferences dialog. But I don't see it back in JDS 3.
One way (assuming you're using a bash shell) is:
    % gnome-session-remove nautilus
    % LANG=de_DE nautilus &
which works, but also switches the rest of the nautilus UI into German.
Setting LC_TIME rather than LANG in the second command should work better, because it changes only the dates/times into German. But it still uses the 12 hour clock, with "vorm." and "nachm." instead of "am" and "pm". I suppose that might be considered a bug...

  • Noise & shapness when view files in Bridge

I am a CS6 user, good but not advanced.  I recently upgraded from a Nikon D3 to a D4.  When viewing D4 files in Bridge after downloading the images (files) appear to contain a lot of noise and to be unsharpe; they appear sharp on the LCD screen on the camera.  I have not experiences with my D3.  I believe I have set my preferences properly.  When the files are opened in CR or CS6 the noise seems to go away and sharpness is normal; the images print up tack sharp.  Any idea what's going on?  I'm through out some files that appeared bad, but may have been good.

In Bridge choose folder with bad images.  Click Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.  If this solves problem purge cache for rest of system, either globably, or if you have cache exported to folders then the Tools/cache method.

  • Erratic behavior when viewing files

    Hello,
I've had a multitude of problems lately, but in short I have a new hard drive and have topped out my memory at 3Gb. However, I still do not understand why when viewing images and documents from Macintosh HD -> Home Folder -> Search this is still happening: the file list will not stay still! The list keeps bouncing around like a ping pong ball, no matter what viewing mode I am in. It is really annoying because I am fighting to scroll down and when I find a file to drill down on, the list jumps and I lose my place. The "jumping" seems to be happening at regular intervals, perhaps every 5-7 seconds.
I have also noticed that all stock Adobe (Photoshop Elements) images are highlighted in green. I never noticed this before, and I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem or not. But I do know that when I bring up these "jumping" file lists, the first file the list seems to be fixed on is the first Adobe stock image on the list, even though it is never the first file in the list (no matter how the list is sorted).
Any comments or suggestions are welcome. I Googled this issue using many different combinations of keywords with no useful search results. I can't possibly be the only person on the planet who has experienced this problem.
    Thanks.

Problem solved, or at least alleviated, by turning OFF File Vault.

  • OD 10.8 All dates modified for home folders & files changes on login

We upgraded our network server to 10.8 recently, and now whenever a user logs on, all the files & folders in their home reset the date modified to the login time. It's the most bizarre glitch I've ever seen.
Possibly, but not likely related, their mouse settings (or at least natural scrolling setting) are not retained.
Has anyone else encountered this weird behavior? New accounts/imported accounts are all effected. Doesnt matter if they login from a 10.7 or 10.8 machine. OS is up to date on both the clients and server.

Has anyone else encountered this weird behavior?

  • Date range error when viewing items purchased on ipad from PC

When I'm on my PC and open iTunes and sort by date, the latest date to show up is 2011 but I have purchased many items on my ipad since then.  I don't know what happened and why it won't show my recent purchases.  Any suggestions????
    Karen

You will get a second message saying you won't be charged but if you're concerned, just download a free app, any one will do, first to your iPad, then try to transfer it to your PC. Presumably it won't transfer so then download it again directly through iTunes on your PC and try to transfer again.
Oh one more thing: did you register your iPad during the initial setup sync? iTunes should have asked you if you wanted to register the iPad now or later. If you picked later, maybe the iPad isn't being recognized by iTunes as an authorized device. I'm not sure my speculation is right because if that were the case, I don't think you should be able to transfer apps from PC to iPad but you can do that. But I'm just throwing out ideas. If you haven't registered the iPad yet, maybe go ahead and do so.

  • Finder slow to show items in column, icon views (OK in list, cover flow)

I'm seeing new perplexing slow behavior on our three-month old iMac running 10.5.5: when in column view and selecting (or in icon view and double-clicking) a folder, there is an initial five-second lag before items will appear in the next column or window; meanwhile, the bottom of the window will only show the space available until items appear and only then will it list the number of items along with space available. It's enough to make you wonder if there actually is anything in the folder while you wait. I say "initial" lag because on subsequent selection, the listing is instantaneous. However, if you log out and in again, it's back to the delay while waiting for initial listings. None of this behavior happens in list or cover flow views, but column view is my routine, so I'd like to make it snappier.
I've gone through some basic troubleshooting steps (repairing permissions, checking Console and Activity Monitor) to no avail. I haven't run into this behavior on my 2-yr. old MBP, so I'm not sure what to look for. Any thoughts?

Get a utility such as TinkerTool System, Onyx, etc. that has a feature to remove all .DS_Store files. If they get corrupted this could cause the problem you describe. I would also consider disabling the View preference to Show Icon Preview. Use the Show View Options in the Finder's View menu. With Leopard you may need to do this for each new Finder window you open (press COMMAND-J to open the preference dialog for the active window.) Do the same for the Desktop. Show Icon Preview can slow down the content display in the Finder initially. Once the information is cached it displays much quicker. Hence the observation that you described.
It also may not hurt to delete the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file in case there's problem with it. Then relaunch the Finder - open the task manager (COMMAND-OPTION-ESC,) select the Finder task and click on the Relaunch button.
