Items in Library mysteriously disappeared

All of the items (movies, songs, purchased from the Store or not) from my Library were gone once I opened iTunes one day. I have absolutely no idea why. I connected my iPod and my computer responded as if it were being connected for the first time. Haven't been able to update to the latest version of iTunes, either. Please help!!

I assume the actual music files are still on your hard drive and it's just the itunes database file that is causing problems.

See if you can open a database file from the Previous iTunes Library folder.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes, and when prompted go to teh previous copy - does it list the songs?
Why can't you update iTunes

  • Apple TV purchased items mysteriously disappearing.

I purchased a season of a TV show, and I downloaded directly to Apple TV.  I have a first gen box.  I contacted Apple and they claimed they "posted the missing items to my Apple ID".  When I checked my Apple TV unit - some of the missing items appeared.  Then they mysteriously disappeared again!  I have sent multiple emails to Apple Technical Support and they have now stopped responding to my emails.  I called Technical Support and they were no help.  I saw on a discussion board where if you repurchase the items Apple will recognize that you already purchased, and allow you to download at no cost - NOT THE CASE.  I tried, and I was asked " Are you sure you want to repurchase items?"   There is an ITunes option to download previously purchased music and apps BUT NOT AN OPTION TO DOWNLOAD PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED MOVIES OR TV SHOWS.
Note I am running the most recent version of Itunes and I am running the most recent software for Apple TV.

I am the only person with access to the unit.  I live alone.  I doubt that Apple purposely "deleted" the content.  It should have downloaded but I believe it did not.  It believe the content was streaming, even though I opted to download.  THe point is that Apple has not corrected the provblem.  It has not provided the content for download even though I purchased it.

  • How do I get "Now Playing" Cover Artwork to show in bottom/left of screen.  This has mysteriously disappeared.  Thank you!

How do I get "Now Playing" Cover Artwork to show in bottom/left of screen?
This has mysteriously disappeared.  Thank you!

Click on the box symbol with an arrowhead at the bottom left of the iTunes window (it's the fourth symbol from the left) to show or hide the artwork window.  Click on the title bar of the artwork window to toggle between "Now playing" and "Selected item".

  • My entire itunes library has disappeared !!!

    Hi all ,
My entire library has disappeared !!
Not sure if it happened during updates or one of my kids did it !!
HELP ...... had over 2000 items in there !!
    Thanks

Restoring music is not all that easy.
    For iTunes Purchased Music:
    > Downloading past purchases from App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    OR
    > iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
For Non-Tunes Music (CDs or Third-Party):
    > Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
    Hope all this helps.

  • ATV worked then library just disappeared

I fired up home sharing, added access to my main library. Set up 3 iPhones and 2 ipads as remotes.
ATV working great as an airplay speaker selected via remote directly through my main library, also.
    AWESOME.
Then, in the middle switching from one song to another via iPad remote, the library just went away. It no longer shows up under "computers" on the ATV, or on the remote as a sub category under the ATV.
The main library still shows up on "remote", but I can no longer connect to the ATV as a speaker via remote, or from my main computer...a mini that runs my itunes library. The ATV still shows up as a remote speaker, but I get the "unknown error" message when I try to connect.
My airport express speakers still work.
I seem to remember having to tweak something to get my remote speakers working (attached to airport express), but not exactly what I had to do.
The mystery to me is what the heck happened that made the configuration change out of the blue?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied & renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • Airport icon mysteriously disappeared?

About a day or two ago, my airport icon that's always in my taskbar has mysteriously disappeared?! I need help. How on earth do I get it back. And for that matter, how did this happen in the first place?

The response above tells you how to get it back, but you also wanted to know WHY it went away, didn't you?
If you hold the command key (formerly known as the Apple key) down while dragging the icons in the menu bar, you can rearrange them. This is a feature of OS X. If you hold the command key and drag the item off of the menu bar... POOF! It disappears.
My guess is that you were mousing around and selected the Airport menu while inadvertently holding the command key. The dragging action normally used to pull down the menu removed the icon from the menu bar.
Hopefully your entire question is answered now.

  • While importing and burning some CDs, my entire library has disappeared.  Also, there no longer is a "burn file to disc" command in the File menu.  I have downloaded the latest version of itunes which restored only tracks I bought from the iTunes store.

Also, the "burn playlist to disc" command has disappeared from the File options.  I downloaded the latest version of iTunes but that only restored tracks I'd bought from the iTunes store.  I also tried setting up another logon.

  • The operation can't be completed because the item "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" is in use.

I am trying to transfer my iTunes from my PC to my new Mac. After reading through this forum a bit, I followed the instructions at: http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/move_itunes_windows_mac.html
I backed up my PC's iTunes folder to an external drive after selecting to consolidate files, etc.
I connected the external drive to my Mac and did a copy and paste of the iTunes folder. I have not put any music into the iTunes on the Mac, so I just said Yes to overrite (it said there are 2 files that will be overwritten- I think they are apps I downloaded this weekenad i am fine to overwrite them). It starts to copy and then I get the error message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item “iTunes Library Extras.itdb” is in use." I verified that I do not have iTunes open on the Mac and made sure that when I backed up from PC, I did not have iTunes open there either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Katie

    I figured it out!
There was an iTunes folder on my new Mac. I may have installed it. I just deleted the whole iTunes folder under Music. I then tried copying and pasting from my External Drive again and now it is copying the data as I would expect.

  • My iTunes Library has disappeared. Help!

My entire iTunes library has disappeared. From reading other posts I see that this has been an issue. I'm not sure if it's related to AVG antivirus (but I deleted it anyway) or due to iTunes update. I noticed a week or 2 ago but haven't been back in the library since and was hoping that it would correct itself.
I went into my iTunes library and see that all my music is still located there in iTunes Media and iTunes Music folders--neither folder has all music. The previous iTunes libraries are 4 months old and don't have about 70 new songs, apps, books etc. that were purchased. I know that my iPod Classic has all of the music library located on it but doesn't have the apps from iPad, iPods, and contacts from iPhone. What is the best way to restore this. Please help! I am not techy enough to figure it out.

Uninstalling AVG won't repair the damage, though hopefully it should stop it happening again. See this post for repair steps.

  • External hard drive mysteriously disappeared.

My external hard drive (Firewire) mysteriously disappeared. I can get it to pop up in Disk Utility, but I can't get it to show on the desktop. I've tried it on a few Mac computers. Do you have any idea what happened?

That's very strange. I don't think I've heard of DU exhibiting that behavior before.
I presume the reason you don't want to erase the drive is that there is un-backed-up data on it, and that if you could recover that data you could either reformat (erase) or dispose of the drive.
You may want to try downloading and using the free demo version of one or more of these data recovery utilities:
    Data Rescue II
    FileSalvage
    VirtualLab
In each case, the demo will show you what files the full version would be able to recover from the drive. You can then decide whether the files you could recover are valuable enough to justify buying the full version of the utility.

  • I had to buy a new laptop after my old one died, after authorising my new one nearly my whole library has disappeared. How do I get all my songs back?

I had to buy a new laptop after my old one died, after authorizing my new one nearly my whole library has disappeared. How do I get all my songs back?

Likely, because you are now using a different Apple ID and iTunes account. Return to using your old Apple ID and authorize only after you have de-authorized your old computer.
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.

The error message I get on my PC is "The ITunes library file cannot be saved" An unknown error occurred (-50)and my music library has disappeared.  I recently tried to copy a CD to my library - it appeared to copy ok but then did not appear in my music library.  The library does not show up even when my iPad is connected to my PC.  My entire library is now held on my iPad and I wish to have it in iTunes so I can sync my iPhone to it as well.  Help?

Don't know what changed today but it downloaded and installed on the shuffle. So far so good.

  • HELP! Library has disappeared, How do I get the music from ipod to my comp?

Please Help me! I don't know what to do!
I'm a fourteen year old and my Itunes library completely disappeared from nowhere. I honestly didn't touch anything on it!
So know my Itunes wants to erase and sync my library with its library on there, which has nothing! So, How do I get my ipod music from my ipod to my computer? I'm on Windows XP and Itunes 10!
Please don't make me download anything, because I'll probably get a virus....

Have you looked in the recycle bin? If it's not there, do a search for a song and see if it can be found on your computer somewhere else. By design, iTunes is a one way street - from your computer to your iPod - not the other way around. However, if you can't find any files on your computer, do an internet search for how to move the files from your iPod. Good lesson on why you need to back up your files. FWIW, files/folders just don't "disappear".

  • I set up iPhoto v9.6 to copy items to library. Now I would like to change it to not copy. Do I have to start completely over? I have 106GB of photos and tags in my library. Will I lose all that work?

I set up iPhoto v9.6 to copy items to library. Now I would like to change it to not copy. Do I have to start completely over? I have 106GB of photos and tags in my library. Will I lose all that work? Originally I thought by copying items to library I would be making an exact copy of my originals and that would serve as a duplicate or backup copy. My originals are on my EHD#1 and my iPhoto library is on my EHD#2. But now I realize that I can not view my iPhoto library unless my EHD#2 is connected to my computer (duh!!) So now I would like to NOT copy times to library and I want to have the library in the Pictures folder on my laptop HD. So I guess my question is do I have to start completely over? Is there some way to salvage all the work I've done so far?

Yes you would have to start over from scratch.
But you should really think this through very carefully. Experienced users do not recommend iPhoto used in this mode, and with very good reasons. Among them
    1. It's more work for exactly no gain
    2. It's unreliable - especially - when the library is on one volume and the photos are on another. One change to the path between the files and the library and you'll be reconnecting every photo in the Library back to the database, one by one.

  • How do I save items in library but not copy to ipod?

How do I save items in library but not copy to ipod?

If the item is in your iTunes library then it is already saved.
With the iPod plugged in then select the items that you want to sync to the iPod. You can sync your entire library to the iPod - space permitting - or just selected content.
