Items in sidebar of finder

Downloaded files appear in the sidebar of the finder even though the files have been deleted. Nothing I do will remove this list. What can be done to remove the file names from the sidebar?

Sorry for taking up space....cmd drag is all you need. Should have done a little more research.

Can't delete items in sidebar in finder

i can't delete a folder thats in the sidebar. when i command click all it says is "open sidebar preferences". when i try to move the folder over to the same folder thats in the sidebar it says "the alias (foldername) can't be found because the original item can't be found". it won't let me delete the alias, so when i click "fix alias" it comes up with a box telling me to find the source file. but it won't let me click anything so i'm forced to say cancel, and when i say cancel i have box pop up saying "error code 8060".
how can i fix this and delete the folder that i have in the sidebar in finder?

When I login, all of my desktop items are gone, the "Finder" icon is bouncing and a message asking to restore windows is blinking but unresponsive. I can't exit out of it. What do I do? I've tried force quitting, and it doesn't get rid of it.

Additional Information
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.

Is there a way to control the width of Sidebar in Finder (Leopard)?

Each time I open Finder (and there is no difference between different views - Icons, List, Column, Cover Flow!), my *Sidebar with its width takes a good 1/4 of my screen*, so I have to use mouse in order to decrease Sidebar's width!? No mattere I've tried different views, Sidebar takes always mentioned width when I opened it first time. If Sidebar already is opened with "fixed" width, it is OK.
Any suggestions? Could it be "fixed" by using Terminal, or...?

I am puzzled. I just tried the sidebar on finder, adjusted it with the mouse, closed the finder window and it reopened perfectly as to where I "slided" it to with the mouse.
(e.g. if I slide it 3/4 across to the right, having a WIDE sidebar, this is how it reopened, and similarly having e.g. 1/8 width). Unless I misread what you mean?

USB devices don't appear in Sidebar or Finder but do appear on Desktop

After upgrading to Leopard from 10.3, I notice that when I plug a flash drive into the keyboard USB port of my 1.8 GHz iMac G5 the drive appears on the desktop, but not in the Finder or Sidebar. I believe this problem is also affecting PhoneValet, which no longer finds the USB telephone interface. Any ideas?

I am not sure why it is acting that way in the keyboard USB port. If you plug it into a system USB port, it will show up in the Sidebar on Finder.

Volume eject from sidebar closes finder window

after successfully upgrading 2 machines (12" pb 1.5 GHz, mac mini Core Duo 2.33 GHz) to Leopard everything works beautifully except that finder windows close when I attempt to eject a volume (CD, DVD, memory sticks, server volumes). I usually have 2 windows in column view open and only the active window closes, yet the volume unmounts successfully. This happens in any other view (list, icon) as well.
Both computers were upgraded from the latest Tiger version and don't have any extensions or pref panes installed. The problem still occurs after a "safe boot".

I was a bit startled by this behavior as well. As near as I can determine, if the object the be ejected is selected in the sidebar then ejecting it closes that window. If something else is selected you can actually click the little eject button next to the thing to be ejected, it does eject, and the window stays open. I suppose this is logical: after all if something is selected in the sidebar, then Finder is displaying the window for the thing selected, and if that thing goes bye-bye then so should its window. The old behavior was actually illogical but we were used to it.

When I called Apple (after wating 42 min. for a live person) I was told to run the APPLE Software Update and turn off location services then restart my computer. There were no available updates. The iPod touch I got on Christmas day. The iTunes app was downloaded the same day. Since day 1 I have not been able to connect. I also followed lllaass's advice and followed instructions on the following 2 websites.

After restarting my computer:
From the iTunes app I click on the 'iTunes Store'
A new window opens and I get the following message:
This Apple ID has not yet veen used with the iTunes Store.
Please review your account information
So I click on 'Review' and am taken to a crude screen that says
Welcome to the iTunes Store
With an Apple ID, you can download the latest music, videos, and more.
To begin creating your Apple ID, click Continue.
So I click on 'Continue'
A pop up window says:
We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-1202).
There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.
And the only option I am left with is to click 'OK'
After every fix this same scenerio just loops and loops and loops

"My Pictures" folder deleted/moved from My Favorites sidebar in Finder – How to retrieve?

I accidentally moved "My Pictures" folder from the My Favorites sidebar in Finder, and I can no longer find the folder. I've searched "all my files" for a My Pictures folder and nothing has come up, not even in the trash (that I haven't yet emptied). I am wondering if there is anyway of getting this folder back, as I had several pictures and folders organized within that My Pictures folder. All of my pictures are somewhere still on my computer but even they are hard to locate now without them being in any folder. Would be a HUGE pain to have to re-organize every single thing that was in that folder. Please if somebody has a solution, do share! Thank you!!!

Okay, so I actually just figured it out.... If anybody is wondering/has the same problem with any folder:
I went into Finder>All my files> Search and typed in "Pictures" and then went to the "gear looking icon" and clicked Search Criteria. Then changed the second option from "Document" to "Folder". (This explains why none of the folders were showing up). I then dragged the following folder back into "Favorites" sidebar. See Pictures attached.

Can't change sidebar in Finder

I am trying to change the sidebar in my Finder app so that it displays certain items and not others. I've gone to Preferences > Sidebar to display the "Display these items in the sidebar" window and clicked and unclicked the various items, but nothing seems to change the list that appears in the sidebar. For example, I'd like to display the Desktop in the sidebar, but checking the check box next to Desktop has no effect. Any ideas?

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/
com.apple.finder.plist Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.

Recently created items not shown in finder.

In an effort to replace the invaluable (IMO) recent item canned searches that were on the older Mac OSX finder sidebars, I've changed the settings of the "All My Files" folder to display by "last modified". Only problem is that it doesn't want to show InDesign files or pdfs. The pdfs will show up about 20 minutes after creation, but that's not very helpful if I've just created something I need to email to a client immediately. Granted, I can navigate through the finder windows to the file and drag it into an email, but it's a lot easier just to open the "Today" or "All My Files" folder and see recently created files right there. Is anyone else having this issue?

You don't say how long ago you migrated. If it was very, very recently it may still be indexing. If not you may try reindexing as directed in Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes

In the lefthand sidebar of Finder, under 'Shared', I encounter in addition my TC, another computer, identified by a long name starting with 'hp'. I don't have another computer. What could this be? And how to get rid of it?

In the Finder sidebar, under 'Shared', I encounter my TC, as well as another item with a long name starting with 'hp'. 'Get info' shows it to be a 'PC'. However, I don't have a PC. It cannot be my printer (HP), since that has anoter name.
I can not access the item, which has me a 'guest'.
What could this item be? And how to get rid of it?

It's almost certainly your hp printer and is showing the WiFi adapter MAC address after the HP.
To verify, look at the printer configuration page via Bonjour in Safari. The settings tab shows the Mac address in the bottom left hand corner for my model of HP printer.
I'm sorry but I can't explain why that would show up in the finder.

Duplicate items in Sidebar

I have 4 exact duplicates of my main Places icons. They appear to be linked to one another, because clicking on any of the duplicate ones (beyond the first set) simply selects the matching item in the first set.
If I try and remove one of the duplicate icons, it removes all of the related items. For instance, I tried removing the 2nd Sites icon and this removed all the Sites icons.

Navigate to /Users/Home/Library/Preferences folder and remove the com.apple.sidebars.plist. Put it in the trash and restart. Does the problem go away?

Highlighted items in sidebar

The default items in the sidebar are highlighted when selected. Yet when an alias (not of a default) is placed inthe sidebar and then selected they are not highlighted. The alias will open and there are no problems but it is a convenience to have the items highlighted when selected. Is this typical behavior for the finder with OS 10.4 or is there a problem?

Try draging the actual file or folder to the sidebar, instead of an alias. The sidebar will make it an alias automatically. The original will not be moved.

Duplicate Shared Items in Sidebar

Hi:
Weird one. Suddenly all the shared items in my sidebar are doubled. I have Capsule and Capsule (2), NashServer and NashServer (2), etc. Deleting the finder prefs dosn't fix it. Flushing caches does nothing. That is about the extent of my skill set. Anybody have any further ideas?

Solved this. It wasn't an Apple problem. Please disregard.
