Items show "locked" in hard drive

how do I "unlock" items in my hard drive?  I wonder if that is keeping me from deleting items (especially photos) on my hard drive?  My startup disk is full.

If you have locked items in the Trash, you should be able to remove them by selecting "Remove All Items" when you Empty Trash.
If that doesn't work, you can unlock files/folders by opening GetInfo and UNchecking the "Locked" selection for the file or folder.

how come my mac isnt showing my external hard drive after installing os x maverick? and how to i fix that??

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive?  If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

  • Can't get Solaris 8 to show my second hard drive.

I installed Sol8 on a 1 hard drive intel machine (as the only OS, no windows). Later, I added a second hard drive, and after running the device config assistant (DCA) still doesn't show it in the list of drives under the 'format' command.
Physically, the new hard drive is using middle IDE plug on my IDE 0, original drive is plugged in on the end of IDE 0. The new hard drive is jumperred to slave, original was orignially set for single, that didn't work so I tried jumperring that one to master, no change in results. On IDE 1 I have a cd-rom on the end plug, originally with no jumper, then added jumper for master (middle plug is empty).
In the BIOS, the second drive was detected with the right number of heads, cyl, etc. It calls it my D drive.
I can get to certain screens in DCA to show me the second drive (only in respect to which drive should boot the kernal - I don't want to install the OS on the second drive, I just want it for extra storage).
Am I missing a step, or am I not installing the hard drive correctly? After DCA and reboot, it still only gives me a choice of my origial drive for 'format', and only shows one drive in the SMC.
I don't know what is on the new drive (it was pulled from another PC).

I have the same problem on x86 Solaris 10 that the format command cannot show my second hard drive, the master and slave hard disk are attached through one single cable and Solaris 10 is intalled in the master disk. I tried devfsadm -v but it still doesn't work, do you have any other way to do that? Thank you for any help.

  • How can i make apple tv 3 store all my purchased movies and tv shows onto a hard drive somewhere in my house

Currently my apple tv 3 downloads movies/shows when I want to watch them.  I'd prefer if it downloaded everything already and it is all available locally without having to download gigabytes from the internet.
Q: How can i make apple tv 3 store all my purchased movies and tv shows onto a hard drive somewhere in my house?
    a) Impossible
    b) Link my apple tv 3 to a computer running itunes
    c) Link my apple tv 3 to my Apple Time Machine
    d) purchase an external USB drive and plug it directly to the apple tv 3

    Hi! Dwagner, once again ...
I've just got my Mac last friday ... i'm still getting amazed with this new world to me ... eehe .. quite different ... but
... "i can do it, i can do it" eheeh
i'm in that period that a new question appears at almost every mouse click ... lol
so ... can you help me (once again) ..
you said you had your hard drive with this settings...
"You can partition for OSX (extended Journal) - read/write by only OSX or read only by Windows via BootCamp
You can partition for Windows (NTFS) - readable by only Windows
OR - you can format with ex-FAT and this is read/write capable for both operating systems."
how did you formated the partition in NTFS ? ... on the mac? using the "disk utility" ? or did you use another program to do so ...?
i hope i'm not "bugging" you ... this might be a silly question for most of people ... but right now ... it's a major question for me ... ehehe

  • It appears windows hacker has locked my hard drive as readonly how can this be disabled?

It appears windows hacker has locked my hard drive as readonly how can this be disabled?

Sorry about the delay; I have called Apple Care sr advisors and spent 3 over 200 hrs explaining the problems to which they always recommend I exchange the Mac with a new one. This is my 5th Mac mini in less than 2 months. Many of the problems are not directly related to windows issues however (in my uneducated opinion should not be happening)Here are the unexplained issues:
    1. The sr advisors have been remotely connected to the machine and each one said I was setup on a server;
    2. My uid has been replaced with a windows uid (s-18-0-0-1 or sim);
    3. All the root certificates seem to be either fraudulent or modified to allow access to root account from remote locations;
    4. Apache server is active;
    5. WebDAV is configured as well as SQL services;
    6. Every newly exchanged Mac mini has iLife uninstalled prior to any updates being installed;
    7. Mac updates have warning messages indicating they are not signed properly, "contact software manufacture for more information", apple has no answer to this;
    8. Although I have never claimed (nor do I ever want to be computer program literate), I have been plagued by the same issues on Windows PC, Linux and now OS X. My main purpose for needing a secure computer is to write a resume and find employment. In 3 years I have been unable to do either. My data is always Either locked after as read only or is accessible on a URL only.
    9. I know this one will only classify me as an insane maniac but It appears as though I am connected to the Internet via an ipv6 udp connection even though my ISP doesn't support ip6 and all GUIs indicate all connections are inactive. This is typical no matter geographical location ie:Denver, San Deigo, Seattle, Boise et al)

  • Finder issues and Get Info refusing to show the number of files on items on the main hard drive.

I am having finder issues. Mostly on the main hard drive. It takes ages to find things and I get the spinning wheel every time I open a folder.
So I moved all of my files to a external drive.  When I had finished transfering I hit get info on the files on the external drive and on the same folder on the main drive.  To ensure that it has copied over all the files.  Because it was acting up and not copying all the files.
Get Info refuses to show the number of files within the folders on the main hard drive. It hasppily tells me everything on any of the external drives.
I have reset, the imac.  I have re indexed 3 times.  I have deleted the finder plist files.  I have reset finder using terminal commands. I have moved nearly everything off the main hard drive. But nothing is working.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be causing my finder and get info issues.
    Any help wpuld be appreciated.
Running Mountain Lion on a late 2009 Imac

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Can't get rid of items that are making hard drive sleepless

I have an Intel iMac with a dead internal drive. I'm now booting and running it off its backup clone drive, an external La Cie Firewire drive. But the drive is constantly cycling, spinning down and spinning up, even when all apps are closed and the iMac seems (and should be) asleep (if the internal drive was doing this and i couldn't hear it, no wonder it died).
I looked in Activity Monitor to see what it's up to when it's supposed to be asleep, and see some repeated entries from outdated stuff- Lexmark Network Services (from a printer i no longer have) and Palm Desktop Background, from a Palm program i haven't used since 2006 and thought was de-installed.
The thing is, i can't seem to get rid of them. It's difficult to pinpoint their exact source thru Spotlight (or Inspect in Activity Monitor), and when i throw what i can trace of them in the trash, i can't empty it, i get a message that says "USB Transport rsrc is in use".
How can i get rid of these items, which are obsolete and might be what is keeping the drive cycling?
I removed a bunch of unneeded items from Login Items, but Lexmark one isn't there. And what is "Transport Monitor" (shows in both Startup Items and Activity Monitor)? Can i delete it from Login items?
Energy Saver settings seem fine- it's set to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. It's just not going inactive.
    Suggestions?
I'm having to shut the iMac down whenever i walk away from it to keep from hearing all that cycling from the drive (and wondering what it's doing to the drive).

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, like if it still changes in 5-10 minutes...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it maybe some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. It also may be Video Card or Airport going bad.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

  • Why does Finder show my external hard drive as a broken alias?

When I click on my external hard drive I get the message "The alias “External HD” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found" with the option to fix or delete the alias. It does not let me choose the drive to fix the alias or delete if I select an option.
Both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior show no problems with the disk, but I can't access the contents.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I had a problem with my La Cie 1TB drive, connected to my Airport Extreme. Sometimes I could view the root level (first level of folders), but clicking to the second level, all folders seemed to be empty. It was indeed the alias bit that was the culprit.
Instead of always go into Path Finder or Terminal to flip the alias bit, I made an AppleScript, compiled it into app, and put that in my Login Items (System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items). Now every time I reboot or log in again, the disk is mounted in the correct way, without alias bit.
For those who want to use it, here is the script.
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    if (exists disk "NETBU") then
    eject "NETBU"
    end if
    set volumemounted to false
    try
    mount volume ("afp://youraccount:[email protected]/NETBU")
    on error
display dialog "Error mounting NETBU." & return & return buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    end try
    set volumemounted to true
    if volumemounted = "true" then
    do shell script "sudo /usr/bin/SetFile -a a /Volumes/NETBU"
    end if
    end tell
Note : Replace "NETBU" by the name of your disk; replace youraccount:password by your account name and your password; replace 192.168.1.2 by the IP address of your Airport. If your disk is connected in another way, you need to change the mount statement accordingly.
    Good luck !

  • I cannot access iTunes songs showing in external hard drive

I recently closed my dropbox account and moved its content to an external hard drive. This included iTunes songs  and now the songs and related albums no longer show in iTunes when I open it up, although I can see the individual songs (but not in albums)  in the external hard drive.  There are a limited number of albums still showing when I open up iTunes but they are albums I have recently added to iTunes.
However I can see the albums and tracks in the iTunes media folder on my Mac internal hard drive, but they do not show up when I actually open up Itunes.I have followed advice found on this website and have tried to move my iTunes folder to the external drive so all the music is in one place, but i keep getting an 'error code 50' message appearing.  I have also tried to select the individual songs on the hard drive and move them to the media folder but there are no 'albums' to move them into and they just sit there as individual songs.  I have a macbook air which is one year old and a WD My Passport ultra 1TB external hard drive.  I am using OSX version 10.9.5 with 8GB of memory.  As you can tell from my endeavours, I do not really understand the way iTunes works and it may be that the various songs and albums in the media folder need to be organised in a different way perhaps, so that they are visible when I open up iTunes?
As I have lots of space on my external hard drive and am running out of space on my Mac hard drive, ideally I would like all my iTunes folders to be held on my external drive, as it is always plugged in to my Mac, and for iTunes to be 'pointed' to the hard drive.   Any advice please?
    Thanks
    Elizabeth

All kinds of things going on.
About the error code.  Do you men "50" or do you mean "-50"?  It is critical things get reported exactly here.  Error -50 is a very unhelpful generic communications error with a number of possible causes.  Something between the drive to which you are downloading and the drive from which it is all coming is not working correctly, with probably dozens of possibilities.  I guess one simple possibility is if this is a brand new drive it likely came formatted for Windows use and needs reformatting for Mac.

Basic workings of iTunes.  When you add a file to iTunes it puts the file in a specific location designated in you Media Folder preferences setting and makes a note in a database file (library.itl) of where it put it.  When you want to play the track iTunes looks up where the file should be, goes there and plays that file.  iTunes does not inventory its media folder for new additions.  For iTunes to recognize tracks they have to be added to iTunes either by importing, dragging to iTunes, or dragging to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder.  If files added to iTunes are later moved by you in Finder, particularly to another drive, iTunes loses track of them completely and give you a broken link indicator " ! ".

I don't know exactly how Dropbox works but basically by moving all your files instead of letting iTunes do the relocating you have broken all the links to your older files in iTunes.  You can either repair them one by one, by one, by one....  or you can rebuild your library, or essentially create a new library and start over again (you did read those links I provided didn't you?).  If you are prepared to start over, hold down the option key while starting iTunes.  Create a new library on the external drive.  Drag all your media files to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder in the iTunes folder on that drive.

  • Saving tv shows to a hard drive

I have 2 apple tv's they run out of memory since they aren't connected to a computer. I usually delete my shows when I run out of space. but now I have too many shows downloading and my kids want to keep their shows. I bought an external hard drive is there a way I can save the shows to that. I have an old thinkpad that i can use for transfer but it doesn't have enough memory to save all the shows without transferring them to an external hard drive. Can someone tell me how to do it in simple terms. i'm not a techie.

The original Apple TV was able to sync and stream but it was not meant to be a primary source. You would have to sync to iTunes and then backup.

  • Back up files not showing in external hard drive

Looks like back up is performing although when I check the contents of my external hard drive nothing in there past 2012.
Do I need to select specific items from somewhere?

Open System Preferences > Time Machine
You should see the last time it was backed up.
Verify that you have the correct drive selected.
You should see something like this:

  • Disk Utility does not show my internal hard drive.

    Recently, my Macbook Pro crashed.
    THE PROBLEM
    1. I turn it on, it starts normally at first, the Apple Logo Shows for several seconds
    2. It changes to a no-smoking sign without the cigarette
    3. If I try to boot safe mode, a folder appears with a question mark
    4. If I try the internet recovery, I get to the part where I can restore OSX, use disk utility, etc.
    5. When I try to restore OSX, it doesn't show my hard drive as avilable to install upon - no drives are shown
    6. When I try to use disk utility, it only shows my Mac Base System, totaling 2GB, I cannot do anything.
    THE QUESTIONS
    1. What do I do? Thoughts? How do I recover my hard drive data before sending this computer to Apple to fix?
    2. How can I use an external enclosure to recover my data using my desktop? What cords do I need? What is a good drive? Is it hard?
    3. My SD card slot shows, could I install OSX on that and try to load my OSX to gain access to my harddrive that's missing?
    4. Why would my main hard drive not show? I'm supposed to have a 250GB hard drive.
    5. Is there anything I can do on Terminal to try to make my full hard drive appear? Or gain access?
    6. What will Apple do with my RAM that I installed? I upgraded to 8GB? Will they just return as is?
    Thank you.

  • Backing up purchased TV Shows/ Movies to hard drive

Does anybody know how to restore files that have been ... moved? I think maybe I lost the rights to play my video files or something, but I don't get any error message.
Here's what happened. So, I have this new lots-and-lots-of-gigs external hard drive. I thought I would be smart and back up my iTunes Music Library to this wondrous new spot, freeing up some disk space on my Powerbook.
I backed up the library. iTunes "Back up Library" option and everything.
I changed the location iTunes recognizes as the Library. I told iTunes to make its default Library location ON the HARD DRIVE itself, where all the files now lived.
And then, like an idiot, I deleted the old library. I freed my disk space.
So then, I reimported all my music, so iTunes wouldn't give me a little exclamation mark and cry, "cannot locate file: Name of Song" or whatever. iTunes now had all the correct information. I told iTunes to play a song. YAY! it worked. I told iTunes to play a song that I had purchased from the Store. YAY! worked again. Then I tried to play a TV show I had purchased from the store.
    ... and it played gray.
A big, soundless box of gray. "Pirates of the Caribbean" looked like 2 hours 43 minutes of a silent gray rectangle.
OKAY ... did I corrupt the files? The audio ones work PERFECTLY, it's just the video files.
    Does anybody recognize this issue?
    Help?
    Thank you!!!

    I needed to update Quicktime!
The iTunes Customer service guy solved this for me. Thanks John.

  • New cube laptop - not showing Maxtor external hard-drive in windows explorer, but showing up in Device manager.

    Hi
If anyone is able to give me some advice I'd really appreciate it. I have seen similar issues on here and tried uninstalling then re-installing the driver which seemed to fix the similar issue on someone's Windows 7 system but it doesn't seem
to have worked for me. I also tried using the usb 2 drive rather than the usb 3.
I have a new cube laptop with Windows 8 (which I'm not used to yet at all) and am trying to access the files from the Maxtor hard-drive from my old pc. The hard-drive does not show up under file explorer but seems to appear in device manager. The

    Can anyone suggest a fix?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Apologize for the late reply.
How about the situation by now?
Could the external hard drive be shown in the

Or take a look at the format of that hard drive(list disks) with diskpart command:
