Iterative Photoshop Editing is possible

Dunno if someone has already posted this, if so, my apologies -- I missed it if it has. Anyway, I won't rehash the iterative photoshop woes except to say that the big problem facing photoshop developers is having progressive edits on consecutive PSD versions, because if you duplicate the PSD, when opened in PS, it is flattened. Here's the workaround, very similar to Ian Wood's earlier solution to get around the RAW conversion problem, except that you do not have to leave Aperture/PS to do it, and no imports are required:
The assumption is that you've imported a RAW, and edited in Photoshop (PS)(adding layers), which creates a "PSD master" in Aperture (AP), which retains the layers. To get a duplicated version of this PSD with layers:
1) Duplicate the PSD in AP.
2) Open the duplicate in an external editor (PS) (it will be flattened).
3) Open the original PSD in AP in PS.
4) Copy all layers from the original PSD to the duplicate PSD.
5) Save the duplicate PSD.
Now in Aperture, you will have two identical PSD masters, which are layered, and can be edited. If you export either one of these using "Export Master" you will get a PSD file which retains layers. Also in AP, you will have an extra version (the original dup) that you can delete.
I have an action which performs all the steps above in PS, so effectively all you have to do is open the two files and run the action and your new layered version is created. I ran into one snafu with it though. When recording a PS action, when you drag layers from one document to another, the action doesn't record the copy, just the selection of the next document. If anyone knows the way around this let me know, and I'll fix that action and post it. Otherwise, the present action goes up to the point where all you have to do is drag/drop the already selected layers to complete the copy.
What this showed me is this: smoothing this out is likely completely trivial. Apple should be able to do this fairly easily. As soon as Aperture saw the layered PSD, it seemed to view it as a new file and display it, because the result of this process was not just one new file, but two.
If anyone knows the answer of how to record the copying of layers from one document to another in actions (when you don't know how many layers you are actually dealing with), let me know.

I probably should also have added for those that haven't followed this problem from the get-go is that the thing that is key about this is that all edited versions of PSDs will sit inside the Aperture library, and are able to be managed/stored from within Aperture's facilities. One real key problem that the duplicate version flattening presented was that as soon as one resorted to exporting to address the problem, file management was now split into two places -- Aperture, and whatever external mechanism that was being used.
This way, management can take place entirely from within Aperture, and files are locked up -- export master on a layered PSD will export the layered PSD correctly.
If someone has already been here already, sorry -- I'm late to the party...and I'm happy to join you.

  • Photos no longer stacking after Photoshop Edit

I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 running on a Mac. I have the box checked to stack edited with originals.
I recently moved all of my photos to a an external Raid 1 drive - I did this within Lightroom, so that Lightroom knew where everything was. Everything seemed to be fine.
Today, I realized that after going to Photoshop and coming back into Lightroom, my photos are not stacking. Not only are they not stacking, but according to Lightroom they are not in the same folder, even though they are.
I am not working from a collection, I am working from the actual folder structure on the drive. If I go to photoshop, edit, save and come back, when it returns to Lightroom, where normally the new edited Tiff would pop up - now it returns a black screen, saying "no photo selected". If I go to the library module, the screen is still black. If I go the top of Lightroom and click on "All Photographs" the tiff file is there next to the picture. However, it is not stacked. If I try to stack it, it says that it can't stack photos that are stored in different folders.
I don't know where Lightroom is putting this Tiff file. The folder that I was editing from had 20 photos in it. I went into photoshop, came back with a tiff, and there are still only 20 photos in the folder, yet if I go up to all photos, it is there, so Lightroom put it somewhere.
When I go look at my external hard drive, the tiff file is there. It is right next the raw. In the same folder. So, it seems that Photoshop is putting it back in the right folder, but Lightroom is not.
    Thanks,
    Pam

Okay, just realized that it is putting the tiff files in a another copy of the Gmax Mini.  You can see in the screen shot that it has my working drive, and then a second version of the Gmax Mini, with just the Tiff files in it!  Is this because it is a Raid 1?

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Photoshop edited image not appearing back in Aperture!!

I'm a Lightroom user but thought I'd try out Aperture 3 for a new project to see if I prefer it.
I scanned in an old family photo album and imported them into Aperture. Some of the photos got torn as I removed them from the pages (they were glued!!) so I thought I'd repair them in Photoshop and also try to remove the paper texture that also got 'scanned' for some of the photos.
When I choose the option "Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS4", I can see a TIFF copy is created and it appears alongside the original image in the viewer. I can also see the physical file in Finder.
However, after I finish editing the image in Photoshop, and save and close it, switch back to Aperture, the TIFF image just disappears from the viewer.
I checked to see if a stack is created, but there isn't one. The physical file still exists in Finder though.
I tried manually importing the edited TIFF image back into the project, but it still doesn't appear!!!
The Aperture library file has increased though, so it seems like something has happened but I just can't seem to access my Photoshop edited image in Aperture.
I have tried this a few times, with different photos, but get the same results.
The other option I tried was regenerating thumbnails for the project but still nothing happens.
Anyone have any suggestions, what's going on??

How did you fix this? I'm having a similar problem!

  • "Preserve photoshop editing capabilities" is incompatitable [error message?]

I've got a frustrating problem that is screwing up my photoshop files. The problem starts
when I try to save my file (it has numerous layers) as a pdf. When I save my file as a pdf I get a pop up message saying "Preserve photoshop editing capabilities" is incompatitable with earlier versions of Phootshop. In earlier versions, you must open the PDF as a Generic PDF (not as a Photoshop PDF). Do you want to continue?"
When I click yes, it saves the file as a pdf. BUT when I go back to open my photoshop file, all of my layers have been merged, thus making my file worthless.
I realize I somehow must have changed a setting, but Im clueless to what it might have been. Has anyone ever come across this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Did you check the Layers option in the Save As dialog?

  • After editing in photoshop cs6 my photoshop edited image does not appear in Lightroom 4

after editing in photoshop cs6 my photoshop edited image does not appear in Lightroom 4 can anyone help?

In Library, set your sort order to Filename instead of Added order and see if the files show up, then.
How are you doing the Save in PS, using Save or Save As—one will show up, one won’t, I think, but I don’t remember which.

  • Referenced Vs. Managed work with Photoshop editing

How Referenced Vs. Managed work with Photoshop editing
    1) My photos are saved on a local hard drive
    2) IF, When editing with Photoshop i like to save over the original since i never like the original to begin with.
    3) Any I make other light changes like filters I do not save over the original.
Where do the Photoshop edit versions go.  i tried playing with just one Folder. Imported one folder as managed and one as referenced..... and can't find the edited version? Am I saving it wrong? I tried TIFF I tried Jpeg…..
Also when i imported the folder as a managed file i still saw the original folder under "pictures" does that mean it's on my hard drive twice, once in Pictures and once in the Aperture Library? That would take up too much space.
    Thanks in advance, Orly

    Got it. Thanks!
I just wish i could figure out the Photoshop part.....
I want to continue using it while i am learning Aperture..... But the copies desapear POOF. It only reflects if I work in Managed and Save it as "Replace".
The option to 'Replace' sounds like you are using Photoshop Elements?
I run the full version of Photoshop (which doesn't have a 'Replace' command), so I don't know the full extent of the saving options of PS Elements. I do know there are a few preference options for importing and saving which can change the behavior so you might check with the PS Elements help system if that is what you are running.
Also, you might check the thread linked below for some tips:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20310393#20310393
Note - with the full version of Photoshop (I use CS6); the process is as William specified where one needs to use the 'Save' command to save the file directly back to Aperture to reflect the edits. There is also an Apple provided tip here:

    Hope this helps.

  • I I keep gettKeep getting "Preserve photoshop editing capabilities" Error

I purchased this resume template online and had no problems saving it as a Photoshop PDF file with the original file.
But once I made my own changes to the resume template, as seen below I kept getting the "I keep getting the error "Preserve photoshop editing capabilities" is incompatitable with earlier versions of Phootshop. In earlier versions, you must open the PDF as a Generic PDF (not as a Photoshop PDF)" whenever I save my file as a Photoshop PDF.
I'm using Photoshop CS6 on a Macbook Retina Display. I made sure I checked the "Layers" in the "Saved As" dialog, so not sure why its causing my Photoshop PDF files to look faint.
I've had friends open the PDF in their computers and they see the same problem, so I'm sure it has nothing to do with my computer. I feel it has to do with a layer or my settings, but have no idea what is causing this issue. Please help!

You seem to have two different issues.
I kept getting the "I keep getting the error "Preserve photoshop editing capabilities" is incompatitable with earlier versions of Phootshop.
So save a psd and turn off the »Preserve …« checkbox in the pdf dialog when a saving a pdf copy off of that.
Please consider the distinction between »error« and »alert«.
why its causing my Photoshop PDF files to look faint.
I think the issue of faulty font display in pdfs created with Photoshop CS6 has been reported multiple times, but I can’t remember any conclusive solution (converting to shape layers would result in unsearchable text); you may want to do a Forum search.

  • Using an iMac for Photoshop editing

Hi. I'm a photographer and have been using a 17" MacBook Pro for the last 5 years and doing all my Photoshop editing on it. The MacBook has served me well but has developed a hardware issue and requires a new logic board. Rather than sink $500 or so into the repair I am considering spending a little more and upgrading to a slightly newer used 21.5" iMac. It's a mid 2010 model. Are there any Photoshop users out there that have been using iMacs and are happy (or unhappy) w/ the performance of their machines in regard to image editing? I'm particularly concerned about image quality as displayed on the iMac screen. Thanks for any feedback anyone cares to offer.
Here are some of the specs on the iMac I'm considering:
    Dual core 3.06 GHz processor
    8 GB Ram
    500 GB 7200 RPM HD
    256 MB VRAM

I use PS CS3 on a 2009, 27 inch iMac with the same CPU and GPU specs and I am not having any issues.
I have a 1 TB HD installed, though.
If you purchase this iMac, I would increase the RAM to the max. 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Photoshop likes fast CPU, lots of RAM and lots of hard drive space for scratch disk areas.
The GPU while not that impressive, but serviceable for 3D and video work, will be more than fine for 2D Photoshop work.

  • Editing not possible because 'Request flag' has value X

When i try to change an number range settings from number range administration, i get an error "Editing not possible because 'Request flag' has value X "
how can and  where can i remove this flag from?
    Thanks

    Hi Tuncer,
I am not aware about the GUI table interface through which you can change the flag.
But i guess there is an option
Go to transaction se11 --> write /AIN* in the table name field.
You will find all the table names related to SAP AII. In the search list now available to you, search for the word "Number".
Then you will find all the table names related to number ranges.
Here you can search the table which will be having that flag field. If you find this table,
go into that table and make that entry manually.
Here is what i can suggest you immediately to solve your problem
    please rvrt for other questions.

  • Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities

I need to send a Photoshop PDF file to an outside vendor to be printed. If the printer only needs to print the file and doesn't need to open it up in photoshop and do any editing of any sort, can I de-click Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities?

If size is of any concern it would even seem advisable.

  • Move to Aperture with Photoshop edited images?

There was just a new thread which asked about iPhoto edited images being moved to Aperture. Didn't want to be accused of hijacking a thread by asking an elaboration in that thread, so here's a new one.
A further question that thread brings up:
I too have edited images. (Very few are in iPhoto).
I do have way too many edited images that have little clones, in various states of edit & possibly recropped in Photoshop, as well. Saved as various resolutions of *.png or *.jpg or *.psd. It appears daunting to move all those in a coherent way.
Is there a way to handle a move to Aperture that reduces the pain of such a messy state?

In Aperture you have two different flavors of organizing structures:
Containers (projects and folders): In the projects you store your images, and the folders help to group them hierarchically for easy access, see Kirby Krieger's essay: Re: Organizing in Aperture, concise long version:
Output structures: Album, smart albums, slide shows, books, webpages, ...: The output structure does not actually store the images, but references them for specific uses and describes relations between images, bases on properties of the images, like keywords, captions, and other tags.
What you need to do, when designing your own library structure, is to clearly seperate the aspects - storage and use:
The storage structure should be simple, but consistant - I am a follower of Kirby's maxime: "one shoot - one project" - just like in the old times of rolls of film - one box per film roll. As to the allocation of folders to contain your projects, there are different approaches; you may go for a chronological scheme How do you structure you library? or group by categories, anything is fine, as long as it isn't to involved, straight forward, and easy to maintain.
The output structure should be flexible; you will find that you will frequently adapt it to the project at hand. Since the ouput structure heavily relies on the tags and keywords, you should invest some effort into define import presets, to get most of your tagging done automatically on import.
Thus said, back to the problem at hand:
Looking: If I use "Stacks," I can group/clump them together. That's a pretty good use for stacks, especially if judiciously assembled into a project container.
I recommend against using stacks for long-term structuring. Stacks are somewhat weird, transient creatures between storage and output structures: they don't fit completely into one of the above categories. They are used by Aperture as storage stucture on import, but their use is restricted - you cannot move single  images contained in a stack to another project (all images in the stack will move together), and special rules apply if you use stacked images in books and slide shows. Also you will need stacks for other uses, and you will want to be able to stack your images according to other criteria. It easy to unstack all images by mistake - happens to me all the time - then your storage structure will be broken.
I suggest to group related images by filename on import - using a custom import preset for filenames. That way your structure will be persistent not as fragile as when based on stacks.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • What resolution & order of work to scan slides for Photoshop editing

When editing all done I would propose to save at 300 dpi. If the photo/slide requires no editing, I would also scan in and save at 300 dpi.
My slides, however, need a lot of work. They have deteriorated over the years and need - colour correction, removal of colour casts, brighten up shadows, brighten up colours etc. etc.
I have read many books and tips but they all seem to think I want to  produce prize winning images with amazing time consuming enhancements! I  just want, as I have seen from other threads, to get into a simple routine and crack on through the pile of slides to produce acceptable digital images!
My simple mind suggests give Photoshop as much to work with as possible!
    I have:
    - a Minolta Dual 3 AF 2840 Slide scanner which has many features akin to Photoshop - curves, Levels etc.
    - Photoshop 6.0.1 and Elements 2.0 - not very up to date I am afraid!
    Three questions:
    1) The maximum Scanner resolution is 2840 - I would have thought scanning at this best to get the most information of the image into Photoshop. Would this seem right - I can resample down to 300 dpi at the end?
    2) How much editing should I do in the Scanner - to give Photoshop the best information to work with - e.g. should I use Levels/Curves in the scanner to brighten up the shadows for Photoshop etc?
    3) Once in Photoshop for final editing, what is the best order of work and which tools best to use, bearing in mind for, say colour cast, you can use Curves, Levels, Colour Balance, Variations etc, etc.- it seems colour balance is best for this from what I have read. My suggested routine is:
Use Scanner to scan and do initial editing:.
    - Clean slide
    - Crop
    - Set 2840 Resolution
    - Pixel polishing etc
    - Use Colour balance for colour cast
    - Curves/levels to bring out detail from the shadows
    - Scan
    - Save as TIFF
    Photoshop
    - Crop
    - Final Overall Tonal adjustments - Curves and Levels?
    - Final Overall Colour casts - Colour Balance?
    - Adjust specific tonal adjustments etc. for selected areas - Dodge, Burn etc?
    - Other adjustments - Clone out blemishes etc.
    - Unsharpen
    - Resample to 300 dpi and save as JPG or TIFF etc. for required purpose - usually JPEG
Does this sound right - any suggestion for variation etc. will be most welcome?
Any other advice also most welcome!
    Tony

    Dear Marian,
Thanks for the prompt reply - it sounds like it is just what I want  to hear!
Just to  double check my understanding! Do you agree, then, that it is a good  idea to scan slides (and negatives for that matter) at the maximum  resolution for the purpose of further  editing in Photoshop?
As you say, Photoshop will reduce  the ppi automatically for larger images than the slide. Most of my final printed  output will be 6x4" but it still gives me scope for a half decent print  at 8x11" if I want.
As I understand it, Slides and Negatives are pretty dense  and can accept high resolution scanning whereas to scan a magazine  page, for example, there would be no need to scan at more than 300 dpi -  in fact to do so may even produce funny results!
I know  people can get carried away with resolution. I do get amused when people  get excited about their super megapixel cameras when they ever only  display the results on a screen or a small print!
Thanks  again for your comments - if you can confirm the above, that will be one big issue solved for me.
    Tony

  • Exposure and lens distortion slightly different after photoshop edit

I'm pretty new to Lightroom and Photoshop, I have a pretty good understanding of Lightroom but not much with Photoshop yet.  I opened a photo that I edited the way I want including lens correction, exposure, etc. from lightroom into photoshop, did some editing with the patch tool to fill in some bare grass area on an exterior shot, then saved photoshop file as psd file in photoshop, then closed file and went back to lightroom, the photo seams to have a slightly different lens distortion not the way I want and different exposure compared to my original edited raw image.  Why is this happening?  why does photoshop slightly change the lens distortion?

Is LR applying lens distortion, again, by default, perhaps also vignetting correction which would change the exposure especially in the corners?
Most lens profiles that contain information about geometric and vignetting corrections are for raw files only, but a few also have non-raw versions.  it is possible that your LR defaults say to apply lens corrections whenever a file is imported and for the lens you're using there are both raw and non-raw lens profiles.
A simple way to tell if this is occurring is to go to the Lens Corrections / Profile tab and see if Enable Profile Corrections is checked or not, and if it is, turn it off and see if the image is more the same as the original raw + your PS patch work.
