ITMS and 5.1 surround

Hello,
I cannot find any information about songs from iTMS if whether or not they are recorded for 5.1 Surround Sound. Can anyone enlighten me?
Thank You.

well, imho the audio midi setup interface should win an award for "most unintuitive dialog box design" since, after reading your reply, i finally found the "properties for" list box. i say that because the entire window is laid out, logically, with "inputs" on the left (including clock source) and outputs on the right (including the speakers). the reason for placing the "properties for" list on the left, and in the middle of everything else vertically, is beyond me.
moving on, with my mini-toslink inserted, the only option in "source" is "digital out". in the "format" list box i have options for 2-channel output with several bit-depths as well as an "encoded digital audio" option. when i select that and go into "configure speakers", the only available option in "multichannel" is "stereo". all the other surround options are grayed-out.
i'm only trying to figure this out in order to get 5.1 output in front row and quicktime. however, this is starting to get really unnecessarily complex (considering that, in vlc, i can just choose audio > audio device > encoded audio).
still, out of curiosity, any ideas why the multichannel options are not available?
thanks again.

  • Sync, Backup, iTMS, and Safari are all acting crazy... gah!

So many things aren't working and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's related to Keychain. In a nutshell:
Backup: bottom of main window in Backup says I'm in Trial Mode, limited to 100 megs, hasn't successfully completed a backup since November 4th, the error message says
"Transaction failed for unknown reason (100), Unable to complete backup at this time."
Unable to restore, says "Restore cancelled, Unknown destination."
iTunes: I can browse the iTMS and my already-subscribed-to podcasts update, but I am unable to purchase new songs or subscribe to new podcasts. I get an error message that says: "We could not complete your iTines Store request. An Unknown error has occured (-9813) There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later." I can not sign in to the iTMS.
Sync: Locks up System Preferences and I have to force-quit.
Safari: I get errors when I go to Apple's website and my personalized Google page pertaining to the signer of the certificates is unknown.
.Mac Preference Pane: System Preferences locks up when I click on "Sync" tab, I have to force-quit, when I click on "iDisk" tab, I get this message: "There's a problem connecting to the iDisc server at this time. Please try again later. You may continue to work offline on your local iDisc."
Here's what I've tried to fix these problems:
I've tried to repair my Keychain - I got a message that said it was fine. I dragged my Keychain onto my desktop and restarted, no change. I've verified my .Mac password, I've rebuilt my permissions, I've followed the links sent to me by Apple Tech Support (none of which were pertinent), I've gone through all my logs looking for error messages and found nothing more than that (-9813) error, I've sent 10 emails to Apple asking for help and received nothing more than links to unhelpful articles and recommendations to try things I've already tried (and told them I'd already tried, by the way.)
The iTMS gift card my wife gave me is useless. Backup and Sync are inoperable. I'm really frustrated.
Does anyone out there have any idea what I can try next?

So here's another thing I tried to do - I re-installed the Security Update COMBO. Didn't help.
I also forgot to mention that I have two accounts on my iBook - one for home and one for work. I'm not sure how Keychain interacts with multiple accounts.

What does itm and fin mean in the file name?
    Thanks

They are in my "all Movies" folder, and the kind is Final Cut Express Movie file.
If they are render files and I'm done with that project can I delete them to save space?
Space on my HD is an issue.

  • Audigy 4 (Non Pro) and center channel surround sound - from 2 channel aud

Hi all,?Is there a way to have voice coming from the center speaker during TV programs like you could using an external receiver with Pro Logic? I can't for the life of me, get my Audigy 4 to do this. I run MCE 2005 on a couple of machines in the house. On my other machine, with built in audio, I let the Purevideo decoder handle this and I get? a nice surround, complete with center channel voice on it while watching TV. On the machine with the Audigy 4, not only will it not give me the center channel while watching TV, but I can't get it to stop processing the sound so that I can simply use the decoding of the Purevideo Decoder... Stumped!?Thanks,?Stu

  • ITunes, Mac Mini and 5.1 Surround - No Joy!

    Greetings,
I'm having problems with getting 5.1 Surround Sound out of my Mac Mini with iTunes.
    Here is my hardware setup:
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 model, has built in HDMI output, running OS X Lion 10.7.1 and latest iTunes version)
    Pioneer VSX-1121-K Amplifier
    Panasonic TV
I've got the Mac Mini connected to the Amp with HDMI, and I've also tried a digital audio cable to the amp.
I'm trying to play a movie (The "Art of Flight" by Travis Rice... GREAT movie!) that I purchased in HD from the iTunes store.
When I look at the "info" about the movie in iTunes, it states that it does have Dolby Digital 5.1 audio
When I play the movie in iTunes, with Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> English (Stereo Audio) in plays fine.
When I change Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> to English (Surround Audio), the movie freezes and will not play.
When I play the movie directly in Quicktime Player, I can't find any way to set the audio output options from within Quicktime player.
I've tried using both HDMI and Digital Audio out in the Sound Preferences Panel
I've tried using the Audio Midi Setup program in Utilities to configure both the Built-In output, and the HDMI output.
I've set both the Built-in Audio Output and the HDMI to "Encoded Audio".
In Audio Midi Setup, when I go into "Configure Speakers..." button, select "Multichannel", I see "Stereo" selected in the drop down box.  But when I click on the drop down box, the options for "5.1 Surround", "7.1 Surround", etc are all greyed out.
No matter what I try, I get stereo output, instead of surround sound.
    Help??

Well, a bit more experimentation and I have some additional thoughts.
I read the discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/2530573#2530573 here.
I installed Perian, didn't seem to change anything.
    I read the discussion http://geekwithfamily.com/2007/07/05/home-theater/howto-5-easy-steps-to-output-d olby-digital-from-quicktime-player/ here.
When I go into Audio Midi Setup it still says the output is Stereo only.  BUT, when I play the movie in Quicktime now, I can hear sound coming out of my rear surround channels now.  The receiver still indicates it only has stereo output enabled.  But it does sound like I'm getting stereo output.
Still not clear why in iTunes they have the option for Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> to English (Surround Audio), but when that is selected the movie won't play at all.  Bug in iTunes, or elsewhere in the system?  I don't know...

  • ITMS and the Hard Drive Crash

I'm sure this has come up a million times before, but a search didn't yield the answer I was looking for.
I have my iTunes music and movies on an external HD. Last night that HD started making a weird noise, as if the rocker arm in the drive is stuck, and now it won't mount. I have all my music on my iPod, so getting that off the drive is no problem. What I am concerned with are the TV shows and movies I have purchased. Since Apple has not yet come out with an iPod that can hold all this data at once, I pick and choose which shows and movies are on the iPod at any given time. If indeed my HD has gone kaput, how do I go about getting approval to re-download these shows and movies? The music I can extract from my iPod, that's a piece of cake. But I need my shows and movies back.
I've been using iTMS since the first day it opened. I've spent thousands of dollars there. I'm on my fifth iPod. I've been using Apple computers for 22 years, and I plan to continue to utilize the iTMS for years to come.
In short, Apple owes me a favor. A big one.
So, what's the procedure for doing this? Is such a thing even possible?
The ironic thing is that this weekend I was going to buy a new HD so I could start using Time Machine to keep backups of all my drives, including my desktop and laptop. A day late and a few thousand dollars short, I guess.

As I said in my original post, I've been shuffling drives around lately, and this weekend I was going to buy an array to use with Time Machine so I could have full backups of everything. I missed it by a few days.
As to what Apple does or does not owe me that is up to them. But 22 years of faithful service, product evangelism, about 8 Macs, 5 iPods, and various other Apple products should count for something as simple as letting me download songs I paid for due to a bad hard drive.
I had already emailed them at that address by the time you posted your response. I have not yet heard back. My next post will be to give the details of Apple's decision, and close out the discussion one way or another.

  • Movie Purchases and 5.1 Surround

Recently I've been noticing some movies (such as Casino Royale and the just released Australia) come with 5.1 Surround Sound. When these are downloaded through iTunes, will they play in Surround on a Machine (given a proper system of course) or is it only for use with AppleTV? Also, are these movies capable of being purchased only in Stereo?

Just purchased my first HD movie through iTunes with DD 5.1.
My home theater uses a Mac Mini w/ iTunes to view content. With optical audio, all necessary equipment, etc...
To my surprise, when selecting DD 5.1 in iTunes, there is no audio.
After digging around on these forums and other places online, I have learned that iTunes, Quicktime, your "computer", will not play 5.1. You will only get 5.1 on AppleTV.
This is a major oversight on Apples part that they need to fix. Send them a message through iTunes feedback and let them know.
They are advertising 5.1 on your "computer" which is completely untrue.

  • TIP: Apple TV and 5.1 surround...

don't know if this is old news but you CAN get 5.1 surround out of an AppleTV..
just encode the 5.1 surround (DTS or Dolby) into Dolby ProLogic II (can use Handbrake to achieve this) and use the analog audio outputs to your receiver. Prologic will carry the 5.1 surround signal and the analog 2 channel signal and your receiver will decode it into 5.1 surround. if it can decode Doble ProLogic II (most with Dolby Digital can... almost all will be able to do this) I just tested this today and it works
also AAC file format does support up to 7.1 surround an the AppleTV does support AAC surround and will happily ship it off to your receiver but your receiver doesn't know how to decode it... couldn't find even one receiver that can decode AAC 5.1, 7.1 etc.
so it would be nice if AppleTV supported Dolby Digital and DTS but you can get around that limitation but using Dolby Prologic II.

OK, I'm looking for a definitive answer to the AppleTV 5.1 question. I don't want simulated PLII surround sound. I'm talking about Handbrake (latest version) ripping my own copy of a DVD with it's 5.1 DD or DTS mix, and playing it from AppleTV (latest firmware) via HDMI through my home theater receiver to my 5.1 speaker system.
Now, when I play a DVD, my receiver detects Dolby Digital and automatically sets the correct listening mode. When I play a ripped movie from AppleTV, I get a PLII setting, which is wrong. I've carefully ripped my DVD's using the 5.1 mix and a 6-channel discrete setting. When I "inspect" these files in Quicktime, it clearly identifies the audio as discrete 6-channel. So why isn't AppleTV outputting the signal correctly, if I've selected Dolby Digital in the settings menu?

  • Z-5500 and CMMS 3d Surround probl

Two days ago i bought Z-5500 5. Speaker system and X-Fi Fatalty.
Yesterday everything worked fine but today when i went to thx setup console and started to test surround sound i found some big problems like i didn't hear anything from my right front speaker and stuff like that but i searched some old topics about that problem and surprise suprise there was some good information and it helped.
But soon as i started to listen some bass heavy music i instantly noticed that something is wrong my subwoofer didn't sound good as it sounded before (before this problem sub gave very big boom sound but now it only gave very distant and small boom sound..eh).
Then i started to investigate the problem but of course i didn't find any problem but i found one thing, when i turn off CMSS 3d Surround sound my subwoofer goes dead and i can't even hear that small boom sound anymore..i dont think this was the case yesterday when i was fooling with options and i turned CMSS off and on many times.
what could be the problem? is it x-fi? maybe subwoofer? or something else?
What should i do.Message Edited by MakeMonroe on 08-2-2006 09:45 AMMessage Edited by MakeMonroe on 08-2-2006 09:45 AM

It's the Fatalty, I switched from the X-fi Platinum to the Fatality and my bass is not what it used to be. I also have 5. and they are the 5300e and I have problems with one of the rear speakers not giving off any sound every now and then. So the only thing I could tell you is this, get a different brand name sound card. The X-fi series works for some people and not for others. Good luck because you will need it with this card and it will give you a headache you will never forget.

  • Imac and 5.1 surround

    hi all
i've hooked up my 20" intel imac to a surround amp with a mini-toslink cable, however i can't seem to get any audio out of the mac except the left and right channels.
i've got a quicktime file encoded in ac3. in its audio settings i have 6 channels which i can route to any output (left, right, center, lfe etc). but nothing arrives at the amp (which recognizes the digital in signal as "linear pcm l-r-sw", except that even the sub doesn't sound).
a trip to audio midi setup reveals that i can only select "built-in output" which is not configurable (gray letters say "output is not supported"). i'm using the imac's internal output. what's going on here?
    thanks for any help.

well, imho the audio midi setup interface should win an award for "most unintuitive dialog box design" since, after reading your reply, i finally found the "properties for" list box. i say that because the entire window is laid out, logically, with "inputs" on the left (including clock source) and outputs on the right (including the speakers). the reason for placing the "properties for" list on the left, and in the middle of everything else vertically, is beyond me.

  • ITunes and 5.1 surround sound problem

The iTunes won't play my music in 5.1 surround sound. Now my PC is equiped with sound card capable of producing 5.1 surround sound and my windows media player is playing my music files in full surround sound. iTunes on the other hand won't do it for some reason.
All my sound and audio options in control panel are on 5.1 surround sound so i don't know what's going on with my iTunes...also all other programs play my audio and video files in full surround sound.
How do i get the iTunes to play my music in 5.1 surround sound?

If the files are just standard stereo MP3 files, iTunes is only going to play them to two speakers. Windows Media Player may do some kind of procesessing of the stereo signal to simulate surround sound and play to 5.1 speakers, but iTunes does not do that.
iTunes will play true DTS 5.1 channel audio files under certain conditions, but those are special files, not just standard MP3s.

  • Audigy 2 ZS No mic or line-in in both Windows and with Creative Surround Mix

    Happy New Year to all.
I have installed 2 ZS card. Output works well. I want to record a couple of old vinyl albums. I cant either through Creative Surround mixer or through windows get either a Line-in or microphone input to select from. I have tried everything but this forum. If anybody has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Eric

In the Creative Mixer on the right hand side you should see a separate column with a "Rec" heading. There should be a small upside-down triangle. Click on that and you should get a list. Choose "Analog Mix" which includes Microphone, Line-In, etc. Then to the left, un-mute the source you want.

  • Cue, merge and batch in surround encoder

One of the most useful functions of Audition for the archivist is the ability, in Edit View, to take a long multi-song .wav (e.g. from digitizing an LP),
add cues to delineate start and end of songs, merge the cues, then batch export the cue ranges as individual files/songs.
Is there ANY way to do this for multitrack (>2 tracks) files and export them with surround encoder as multitrack
(mono or interleaved wav) files on a per song?

..that should end with "...per song basis?"

  • Creative Audigy 1 Platinum and 2.1 Surround So

Ok, i have a Audigy Plat. so have the front dri've etc etc.... i also have the Creative i-trigue 3300 which is a 2. surround sound system....at the moment the way it works is that i connect the 2 speakers into the sub woofer and then the sub woofer into my sound card...thouhg this maybe a 2. system, in real terms the sound card doesnt treat it as a 2. system...
I was just wondering if i can connect like the sub to the digital/analog out of the card and the 2 speakers to the rear and line out of the card?
    Reagrds

For 2. and 4., those 2 and 4 speaker settings are what the proper settings are called. Your speaker's sub will control what it sends to the satellites.
Don't worry, they just didn't change the labels. Most cards send the full signal out and most speakers take it from there.
    5. is different as the card sends dedicated signals to all 6 speakers.
