ITMS and the Hard Drive Crash

I'm sure this has come up a million times before, but a search didn't yield the answer I was looking for.
I have my iTunes music and movies on an external HD. Last night that HD started making a weird noise, as if the rocker arm in the drive is stuck, and now it won't mount. I have all my music on my iPod, so getting that off the drive is no problem. What I am concerned with are the TV shows and movies I have purchased. Since Apple has not yet come out with an iPod that can hold all this data at once, I pick and choose which shows and movies are on the iPod at any given time. If indeed my HD has gone kaput, how do I go about getting approval to re-download these shows and movies? The music I can extract from my iPod, that's a piece of cake. But I need my shows and movies back.
I've been using iTMS since the first day it opened. I've spent thousands of dollars there. I'm on my fifth iPod. I've been using Apple computers for 22 years, and I plan to continue to utilize the iTMS for years to come.
In short, Apple owes me a favor. A big one.
So, what's the procedure for doing this? Is such a thing even possible?
The ironic thing is that this weekend I was going to buy a new HD so I could start using Time Machine to keep backups of all my drives, including my desktop and laptop. A day late and a few thousand dollars short, I guess.

As I said in my original post, I've been shuffling drives around lately, and this weekend I was going to buy an array to use with Time Machine so I could have full backups of everything. I missed it by a few days.
As to what Apple does or does not owe me that is up to them. But 22 years of faithful service, product evangelism, about 8 Macs, 5 iPods, and various other Apple products should count for something as simple as letting me download songs I paid for due to a bad hard drive.
I had already emailed them at that address by the time you posted your response. I have not yet heard back. My next post will be to give the details of Apple's decision, and close out the discussion one way or another.

Right click on your device in the device list and choose "transfer purchses" to copy all music bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
For all other media you'll have to use 3rd party software, examples are mentioned in this thread:

  • I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup. How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation back onto the new hard drive on my pc.

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.
I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.
    Help!

No backup is a huge mistake.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

    - Transfer iTunes purchases:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

I think you can get Windows 7 for around $99. Install the 64bit version as the 32bit version will not be able to use all your new computer's ram if you have more than about 3.5gb.
Back up your quick books data now before the old hard drive dies. You can copy your data over to your new installation of Windows and quick books.
By the way, there is quick books for Mac http://quickbooks.intuit.com/mac/?sc=BNR-000-COR-quickbooks&priorityCode=4902000 000&cid=ppc_google_QB-Intuit-Core-Brand-Mac_quick-books-for-mac_exact&site=&ad_i d=9347918288&raw_keyword=quick%20books%20for%20mac
So you may not need to install Windows at all.

  • My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

  • Battery life drops after Mountain Lion and then hard drive crashes. Coincidence?

On October 20, I purchased and downloaded Mountain Lion for my 2009 MacBook Pro. I soon began seeing a decrease in battery life. When hovering over the battery icon to check the time left, I noticed it said "Service Battery". The notebook otherwise seemed to operate normally. I should also note that I've never had any other problems with this MacBook Pro. By November 18, without any other problems, the hard drive crashed and was irreparable, costing me over $200 for replacement. This should not be a part that needs replacement on a 3 year old computer. Coincidence that these events happened so close in sequence, I think not. If the battery problems are known to Apple through the discussions on the Support Communities, why hasn't Apple issued a patch 4 months after the release of Mountain Lion? The new hard drive was installed running Snow Leopard and I intend to keep that OS. It's really a shame because ML has some nice features that SL does not offer. I also will not be purchasing any new Apple OS until the program has been out at least a year to allow Apple to work out the known, potentially costly problems that they seem to knowingly ignore. I'm a loyal Apple customer but this incident will have me thinking twice before running out to purchase any of their products and software immediately upon release or even a few months after.

Have you followed these instructions, specifically formatting your new HDD?

  • How do you deactivate a license when the hard drive crashes?

How do you deactivate a license on a machine when the hard drive crashes?

My backup is done with Shadow Protect, which as well as providing incremental backups - it adds any changes to the back up every 18 minutes - it also allows you to keep an image of your boot drive.  This image has t be accompanied with a bootable CD, so if your boot drive crashes, you can be up and running again in minutes.  I've never needed that feature, but I have lost two data drives in the last two years, and Shadow Protect came to the rescue both times.  One of thos drives was have a raid0 with many hundreds of hours of video editing.  It would have been a huge disaster to have lost that.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • I had a brand new Mac book pro one month old and the hard drive died. Right before it died I was down loading pictures off a memory card and now they aren't on my memory card! They are wedding pictures I took for a friend and irreplaceable! Please help!!

I had a one month old Mac book pro and the hard drive fried! I was down loading a friends wedding pictures when it stopped working and started heating up. I plugged it in and turned it off as it was making a clicking noise. When I turned it back on the was a grey box with a question mark and nothing else. When I took my memory card out the pictures were gone. I took it back to best buy where I bought it and they said it was dead, needed a new hard drive and all my info is lost! Is there any way to get back those irreplaceable wedding pictures?

There are some data recovery programs (software). I would look into that for the images on the card. When files are deleted, the files are still there, just the headers are removed. That being said, a format of the card or new files written to the card can overwrite deleted files.
The physical hard drive could be thousands of dollars to forensically save, with no guarantee.

I had Adobe 9 Standard on the old.  But what downloads from the page http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-8-9-product-downloads.html is Adobe 9 Pro.  Perhaps this Pro version is the problem.

    Hello, Juniorjr2.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like screen curtain may be enabled.  Screen curtain is a feature that allows display privacy.  To disable screen curtain while VoiceOver is enabled, you can three finger triple tap the screen to disable this feature.  You may need to press the home button once in order to process these steps.  If you wish to disable VoiceOver, see the link in the article below.
