ITouch in Recovery Mode

I downloaded the new iOS 4 update for the iTouch (I have a second generation if I'm correct). The update process threw my iTouch into recovery mode and when I plug it in, iTunes will attempt to restore it but give me an error message.
2010-07-01 14:17:56.000 iTunes[119:207]: iTunes: Restore error 21
I can't even begin to know how to rectify this.

Well MidSummer,
I'm sorry if I sounded whiny. I was totally exasperated (see my message on a similar thread), up past midnight.
At least you're in Alaska! What a beautiful place! Hopefully one of the fixes posted in the forum will work, or if you Google "ipod error 21" you may find a solution from one of the suggestions.
well, I woke up early to try a variation of the suggestion to try another computer. This is my daughter's Touch 2nd gen 8gig that I was foolishly trying to update, and hearing her complaints would be worse than dealing with my own frustration.
I logged on the desktop PC on my user id, all this time I was trying to update and fix the problem on hers. Perhaps my ID has administrative rights, I'm not sure, but that may be one of the issues. Also, the wifi connection on my id always seems to be better than hers for whatever reason. Anyway, I plugged in the brick/paperweight and started the whole process over. I don't have any iTunes content on my user ID on my home desktop. I kept my fingers crossed as I saw the familiar warning message boxes (must restore, etc.) It worked after a couple of glitches(removed and reconnected the ipod)! The Desktop and iTunes finally recognized the ipod! I then restored it from her back-up library. It was able to take the library from her user stuff and reinstall while still logged in under my user ID.
It does seem slow, and may have rearranged my daughter's apps. I haven't had time to run through the Touch to even see if wifi was working yet-I had to get to work. I did see her apps and music and video library on the Touch though. From what I've read on-line, this new OS4 has a lot of bugs for most people, heck-I'm not thrilled with v3.13. Hopefully when I get back from work, my daughter will have played around with it and there won't be too may issues to resolve.
Midsummer, you may need to call Apple service service reps, tell them your touch was working fine, until iTunes 9 instructed you to update the Touch to OS4. Hopefully they'll send you a shipping box and not charge you.
Before this, I must have tried at least 6 different suggestions, and it seems that some work for different touch owners, and other have no effect. I would give the "different computer or user" method first before trying the more complicated suggestions.
Good Luck!

    Hi
    First sorry for my english
Last night, i got my ipod touch and i put a password on when i was watching a movie and with my badluck skill, i put a random password because i was distract Now, when i try to put the ipod in recovery mode and try to do the last patch, my ipod restart in the middle! After this, nothing work

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:

Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.

Perhaps you should try deleting your iPod's Photo Cache. Sometimes a bit random, but it has been known to work for a # number of users.  About the only suggestion I have though.  See this article for information on where to find your iPod's Photo Cache.

  • Upgrade for 7.7.1.11 caused iPod Touch to hang in recovery mode.

Can anyone offer any tips on recoverying my iPod Touch from this issue?
I have searched and found the articles on "holding the power and home buttons at the same time, then using iTunes restore", but iTunes WILL NOT RESTORE the iTouch! If fails with this error: The iPod "iPod" can not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)."
I cannot get windows to recognize the connection either.
That will learn me...never trust update buttons, without checking for problem issues first!
Please some iPod Touch/iTunes guru reply.
    Thanks,
    nitefisher

I found the answer on an older post that was posted on the iTouch group.
Use another computer with iTunes to recover/restore the iTouch from recovery mode.
I guess being a newbie put me at a disadvantage.
Thanks for the answer and opportunity to post.

  • How to get my Itouch out of Recovery mode? Without restoring it

When i plugged in my itouch into a different itunes a message came up saying "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." Since this is not my itunes can is there a way to not restore it?

Authorizing the computer has nothing to do with getting the iPod out of recovery mode.  A program like the following may work.  However, some error happened in the iPod and necessitated theiPod going inoto recovery mode.

If it does not work thn you have to restore the iPod to factoery defaults/new iPod since there is no backup of the iPod on the computer.

  • HT201263 iTouch won't connect to iTunes; recovery mode won't work

My iTouch (fourth generation) was disabled after the incorrect password was input too many times. Now, it says that it needs to connect to iTunes, but when I try to connect it, it tells me to put in the password, which I obviously cannot do because the iTouch is disabled. I tried recovery mode, but it hasn't worked after repeated attempts. What do I do?

  • Itouch stuck on recovery mode, could not even switch off

Hi, I just bought my itouch today and i just finished charging it, when I connected it to my computer, it said that I should update my software and when I did, an error message popped up and now its stuck on recovery mode, I could not even switch it off.
any ideas what should i do?

Apple should be ashamed of itself. I just spent several hours fixing what that bogus "upgrade" caused to happen to my 1G.
For the most part I like the unit for what it does with music but what functionality I wanted was to be able to download a movie and not have to clog up my HDD.
Honestly this functionality should have been included free of charge. So I figure I'll just keep it as is and then find out that I can't even install the simplest of free applications unless it involves lining their pockes with more money. Of the 2 apps that did the same thing the one that was paid had the option to upgrade while the free one tagged me with having to update the OS. Anyways thinking that maybe it's gonna be worth it I paid the 5 bucks for the upgrade.
    IT DOESN'T EVEN WORK!!!!!!!!!!
Panic, reasearch and hours later I am finally syncing my unit with a horribly outdated OS. Thanks for the apple experience. I feel so a$$ raped right now.

  • HT201442 iTouch stuck in recovery mode. Will not restore!

My daughter got an iTouch for her birthday in October. She attempted to update it yesterday and it went into recovery mode. Now it is stuck with the iTunes logo and usb on the screen.  I tried updating iTunes and restoring and got error message 3194. I unplugged and closed iTunes and started over and now iTunes shows a serial # of n/a as though it isn't even reading the device. What is going on with this? As I said it is less than 2 months old. I have had a 4G for over 3 years and have never had one problem with it. Please help!

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
