ITouch shuts down

i really need help. my ipod touch has been with me for over a year and a half, which means i havent really updated it's OS. it is still OS 2.2.1.
my iTouch first auto shut-down when i was inside the library. as soon as i pressed the home button, it suddenly turned off. when i try to open it again, it shows the apple sign for a few minutes and then goes black again. at first i thought it just ran out of battery so i didnt mind it however, after a few months or so, it kept on happening again everywhere i go what ever i was doing to my itouch(playing games, listening to music or just surfing the net). today the problem comes to a point in which it shuts down whenever i use it. i am afraid that there is something inside that is broken. although, as far as i know, i have not yet dropped it to the extent that it might have had damaged it inside. i dont want to try and keep opening it because it might consume its battery's lifetime. having searched the forums for quite sometime, i have not found any one with the same problem.
i would like to ask if the problem is with my itouch's hardware, or just a virus of somesort. seeing that the situation is a bit grave, i am willing to restore my ipod. but then again, with the new OS, i am thinking of just updating it to os 4
QUESTIONS:
WHAT IS MY ITOUCH'S PROBLEM?
SHOULD I RESTORE MY IPOD OR JUST UPDATE IT? would it have the same effect?
IS THERE A WAY TO UPDATE MY IPOD FROM 2.0 TO 4.0? IS IT FREE?
your answers will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Welcome to the discussions,
did you already try to reset your ipod by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes up again? If this does not help, try to restore from your last backup, if still no luck, restore "as new ipod", shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you own a 2nd generation ipod touch, your update is free, see this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2052
Compatibility
The iOS 4 Software Update works with the second- and third-generation iPod touch. Not all features are compatible with all devices.
Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
Multitasking is available with apps that have been developed to work with iOS 4.
Books are available on the iBookstore. Title availability is subject to change.
Faces works only with iPhoto on the Mac.

  • ITOUCH SHUTTING DOWN EVEN WITH FULL BATTERY

EVEN WITH A FULL BATTERY CHARGE, MY ITOUCH 2nd GEN. SHUTS DOWN TO APPLE ICON MODE AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS UNLESS IT'S PLUGGED INTO A POWER SOURCE. THIS STARTED A FEW MONTHS AGO.  WHAT GIVES?  I'M ON V 2.2.1. - ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!  THANX

Here's the Apple article on how to reset the PMU:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Possibly this might fix the problem. If not, here's a link to the MBP battery program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
This program does NOT apply to your battery, but I think you may recognize some of the symptoms that yours is exhibiting. It also sounds like your power adapter may be getting warmer than it should, but that could have to do with the battery being defective. But if less than a year old, the power adapter should also be under its own warranty period.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could make an appointment with the genius bar. They should be able to evaluate both the battery and the power adaptor by swapping yours out with ones that are known to be good. If not, call Apple.
    Good luck!

  • ITunes shuts down when syncing iTouch with another computer

Decided to use a different computer(laptop) running windows. Have moved library via hard drive transfer. Went to connect iTouch- couldn't restore it, but genius bar got it working. Probable antivirus conflict. Now after updating software for both iTunes and iTouch and consolidating library , can't get sync to work. I backed up iTouch before attempting sync and it did import contacts etc. But now it won't sync music library. When I manually move an album to the device , now iTunes shuts down and becomes unresponsive after the first 3 or 4 seconds of the tranfer. Very frustrating.

  • My itouch isn't recognized because mobiledeviceservice shuts down by itself

after connecting my itouch 2g to my laptop (windows XP), a window pops up saying "Mobile Service Device has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." so i click on the error report and this is what the error signature says:
    szAppName : AppleMobileDeviceService.exe szAppVer : 17.64.0.5
    szModName : kernel32.dll szModVer : 5.1.2600.5781 offset : 00012afb
I have tried all the step by step instructions provided on the apple site such as reinstalling itunes, updating the apple mobile device drive, installing the service pack 3 for windows xp, going into Services and stopping and starting the Mobile Device Service, restarting my computer, restarting my ipod touch, etc. none of them have solved my problem and the Mobile Device Service keeps shutting down every time i connect my ipod touch. please help me asap and hopefully i won't have to get out of my house to solve this problem.

  • My iTunes shuts down when I try to sync my itouch

Whenever I try to sync my ipod touch (4th Generation), iTunes stops working and shuts down. I'm able to back up my ipod, but when it starts syncing my songs, it shuts down. I have tried everything to fix it, and nothing works.

Just took out the book from the library "Sams Teach Yourself itunes 10 in 10 minutes" by Brad Miser.
    Basics for problems syncing:
    -restart computer
-make sure device is not out if power
-try a different usb port...BTW....I contaminated a usb port by someone spilling drink on the usb port end of my ipod cord...bad...
    -run apple's web-based device assistant
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495 (windows) or http://support.apple.com/kb/TB1591?viewlocale=en_US (mac)
    clink for the device...etc.

  • Intel-iMac shuts down

    Hello,
I have two very old iPod's that still work great and a new iTouch. I still have an old PowerBook G4 that works great. The only problems that I have are the fans always running very loud and it's very hot.
Anyways, I bought one of the first iMac G5's and it worked great for the first year. After that I had nothing, but problems. Very loud fan noise and it would always shut down even while just using Firefox. I was glad that Apple gave out an extended warranty on the iMac G5's. Of course they replaced the power supply and logic board a few times. I had to get Apple corporate involved and that's when they gave me a new intel-iMac.
I just hit the 2 year mark with my new intel-iMac. The computer has ran great, but now it shuts down on me for no reason. I don't have loud fan noise, but the case gets very hot! I hope it's not a hardware problem again. Could it be a software problem?

  • Computer shuts down when I connect my Ipod Touch to it.

Each time I go to connect my Ipod touch to my computer, I get the blue screen of death appear on my computer with a huge error message and then it shuts down, 'To protect itself'
I have tried to connect my Ipod Nano and thats fine, works no problems.
I have followed various advice notes from Apple with no joy of sorting the problem out.

I've been having the same issue with my 2nd gen itouch. My computer would crash and show a blue screen after I connected my itouch. My other IPODS would work fine. After unistalling/reinstalling several times, restoring my computer to an earlier date, and updating all usb drivers, I was still having my computer crash with my itouch. If you have a webcam, type in the following in the search support: What to do when Windows XP or Vista computer displays a blue screen error message when syncing the iPhone or iPod touch.
I solved my issue with solution one. My itouch is connecting fine without any crashes, for now. Hope this solves your issue.

  • Was updating my touch this morning when an error message occured, itunes became non responsive and was shut down.  My touch is locked in the itunes update mode and my computer no longer recognizes the touch.  How do I correct?

During update, error occured and Itunes became non-responsive and shut down.  My Itouch is now locked in the itunes update screen and is no longer identified by my computer.  How do I fix this problem?

    Try this:
DFU Mode / Unable to Update or Restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
    DFU Mode
Open iTunes and Connect the iPhone to your Mac
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time
After 10 Seconds release the Sleep/Wake Button until iTunes tells you it has Detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode...
The Phone Screen will remain Black... Now Restore.

  • Airport Utility Express shutting down and ip addresses

Just this last week all of a sudden my internet connection starts and drops off randomly. Not only do you have to unplug both it and the router it only stays connected with a green light for a short period of time.
As well, we have had for the past year, my MacBook, an Acer NetBook, my iPhone and iTouch all using the Airport Utility Express. The Acer NetBook had been used in another location for about 2 weeks, when it came back to this location all of a sudden the Airport Utility automatically changes it's IP address to match my MacBook and generates the following error message: Another device on the network is using your computers ip address 10.0.1.3. Try connecting again later. If you continue to have problems, change the ip address of this computer or the ip address of the other device. Contact the network administrator if you need more information. Does anyone know how to change the ip addresses? I understand that this is one of the reasons why the airport utility shuts down but now it is shutting down when only one computer is being used as well.
Thank you for your ideas and thoughts

To minimize confusion, first let's be straight on terminology.  "AirPort Utility" is a software program.  You seem to have an "AirPort Express", not an "AirPort Utility Express".
When you say "the AirPort Utility (presumably the AirPort Express) changes its IP address to match my MacBook", how do you know that?
It's not AirPort Utility or AirPort Express that "generates the following error message: Another device on the network is using your computers ip address 10.0.1.3."  That message has to be coming from the networking software in OS X on your MacBook.
I doubt that this IP address conflict is causing your AirPort Express to shut down.  What exactly happens that you describe as that?
Is that Acer Netbook configured to configure its network settings using DHCP?  If it's configured to use a static IP address, that could explain what you're seeing.  If you're not sure how to check that, I won't be able to help you figure it out, as I don't know much about Windows.  However, I'd start by looking in the Settings/Control Panels for something involving networking.

  • Itunes shuts down halfway through syncing

I start Itunes and plug in my itouch and it starts syncing all the way to "Backing up" ipod. Then an error message pops up and says itunes has to shut down.

Not sure ... since the msvcrt.dll result is rare, I don't have it strongly correlated with any given cause. I thought I'd check on the podcast thing because it's probably the most common cause of this sort of of crash (although usually the error for that does cite a QuickTime component of some sort rather than the dll we're seeing with you).
I'm still wondering about the operating system and its interface with applications on the PC.
Even though you aren't getting the symptoms described in the following troubleshooting document, I think it might be worth a try in this context:
[iTunes for Windows: "iTunes was not installed properly. Please reinstall iTunes" message|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3074]
(The theory here is that the .NET framework is one of the things that Windows uses to stop programs getting their dlls in a tangle. So a subtle problem with the .NET framework might cause an msvcrt.dll error on a sync, rather than the more usual launch issues.)

  • Why is my Library deleted in Version 10.3 everytime I shut down Itunes

Ever since I upgraded to the latest version of I-tunes Version 10.3.1.56 I lose my library files when I shut down Itunes.  I can rebuild them by scanning my music but I have to rebuild the playlists and I lose all history of what has been played.  I do not lose any music just the library files. Then when I sync I'm told the Itouch is synced to another library so it reloads the whole thing again which takes over an hour.   I'm running on Vista.  Can I go back a version or is there a way to fix this issue in V10.3.1.56?

I think you are on to something Polydorus.  I'm testing now.  I have an HP Simplesave device that I unplugged on startup of my PC and Itunes is keeping the library after several startups and shutdowns.  I  then plugged in the device to provide continuous backup and the library went away. I just updated the Simplesave software to the latest release, rebuilt my library and so far the library is staying.  More testing to be done but THANKS for the tip.

  • IPod touch 2G 8GB randomly shuts down app. Clues?

My battery is has full life when this happens and I still have 3GB of unused space. It does not shut off the iTouch, it only shuts down the app and brings me back to the home screen. This generally happens when I am watching something on Netflix, playing Scrabble (which I purchased) and playing Words with Friends (which I purchased). I actually had to take the Words with Friends app off of my iTouch and then reload it to get it to work. I also took some music off to see if that would help these apps. So far, still having issues. Does anyone know why this is happening?

It is essentially impossible to determine the cause to solve try:
    - A reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defulats/new iPod.

After using firefox for a while if I exit, parent.lock is locked and i have to reboot to reload firefox.
I have killed all firefox applications from task manager (usually there are none). and I have tried 3 different "file unlock" programs including unlocker to no avail.
I also recently installed a program that shows -all- open files, and parent.lock is not listed, and thus not closable/unlockable from there.
