No. Avoid like the plague. See the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

    How much free space do you have on the drive? If you have around 20-30GB, that should be ample, so long as you are not intending to download or create a number of large files, like movies.
    The space you will recover by removing unneeded languages and caches and temp files (which will be rebuilt anyway) will be minimal. Leave those alone.
    If you need more room, only remove movies, documents, pictures, or music in your user Library. Or get an external drive and move them out there.
    If you have ample free space, as above, and you are experiencing slow downs, they are being caused by something else, possibly insufficient RAM or a failing hard drive.

  • XML and its influence over program design (2 issues)

    I have 2 open questions about XML and Java. I apologise if they are not clear-cut or specific enough, but really I am fishing for sound advice.
    I am trying to develop a J2EE application but find myself stuttering at an early stage because I cannot decide on the best design for my application. Part of my problem is a lack of experience with the different J2EE technologies/API (especially XML APIs), and the realisation that there is 101 ways to do what I want to do.
    A major issue is this: my application basically is concerned with representing conversations between the server and a user, e.g. a simple sequence of yes/no questions asked by the server to the user, which the user replies to in turn. I believe that the XML format would be a very suitable way to represent these conversations. My first question is:
    * Should the decision to use XML as a storage format influence the design of the rest of the program? I feel that in choosing XML to represent the conversation data, I am stuck thinking about the rest of my program in a XML way (i.e. doing everything using a DOM etc.). Am I right in thinking that my program should be designed in such a way that an XML-based storage system could be easily interchanged with, say, a relational flat-tabled database?
    My second question is:
    * Imagine that each conversation contains one or more questions, and there are, say, 4 different types of question (e.g. yes/no, multiple choice, etc.). Each of these needs to be handled in a different way. Is there a good pattern or recommended way of handling this sort of situation in code, ideally avoiding a big 'if' or switch statement (e.g. if the node is of "ABC" type do this, else if it is "yes/no"...). It would be great if one could easily add new types of question to the XML and then similarly one can make easy additions to the code to cope with these new cases.
    Thank you very much indeed for any advice.

    XML might be overkill if it's just a question followed by an answer and neither contains complex hierarchical data structures.
    * Should the decision to use XML as a storage format
    influence the design of the rest of the program? ICertainly not.
    XML should represent data structures that are natural to your program, thus becoming a tool rather than forcing its structure upon you.

    Think of a factory that creates the handlers on the fly based on the actual message received.
    If the factory makes use of some mapping construct to do so there's no need for any conditionals at all in your decision tree.
    I've myself used XML structures successfully to define such mappings (and so have others) on disc, but simple ones can be easily represented using just a properties file.

    Apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
    Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary. They really aren't.
    There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
    These types of apps potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
    Plus, the software companies that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
    Apps that have no obvious way or uninstall themselves or do not come with a dedicated uninstaller app to uninstall the app in question should be avoided and NOT even considered for download, install and use.
    It is best to never, EVER download and install these types of apps.
    The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!

    A recent download of an iTunes update, for some unknown reason, failed on my computer.   Since then I get a system error message everytime I log on telling me that the program cannot be opened because 'MSVCR80.d11' is missing from my computer.   When I try to open iTunes I get an 'error 7 (Windows error 126)' message and am advised to reinstall iTunes.   However, when I attempt to do this, it downloads the programme and gets as far as installation, at which point I get yet another message: this time 'Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start'.
    I am at a loss to know what to try next and would appreciate any assistance.  I'm also concerned that, in the process of reinstalling iTunes, I am going to lose all the music I have collected over the years.

    Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

    That would be my first guess.  You might be trying to install the 32 bit version of the program.
    Update the thread with more info on your apple software etc if its a 64 bit install you're trying to perform.

    After Effects is a program that can do a simple transition between two still images or produce any composite you have seen in a feature film. The only thing After Effects cannot do is create, edit, and animate 3D models like robots or space ships. You can, however, in concert with a 3D app do anything you have ever seen on the screen and, if you are really creative and talented, probably do something we have not seen yet. You can achieve a successful first project by following these 3 videos: Basic Workflow
    It may take years of experimenting and research to create something we have not seen yet. Starting to learn to use After Effects is like having the key to the Snap On truck and access to all the tools. You just have to gain enough knowledge to use them all.

I want to give the iphone4s to a special needs child that can make good use of it.I am at the point of despair. I can prove where I got the 4s etc. which seems to be a requirement from postings on forums. IT IS BREAKING THIS KIDS HEART AND BREAKING MINE. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP !!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
    However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
    The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
    You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

  • Run dos command that starts program and program stay open

    I'm running the following code,
    string m_file= "c:\program\program.exe" ;// runs a program
    Process myProcess = new Process();
    myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = @programtextBox.Text.Trim();
    myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments = m_file;
    String m_arguments = myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments.ToString().Trim();
    myProcess.Start();
    It works fine except I need the program to stay open that this command starts. But it closes while it's in the process of starting.

    I had a mistake in what I posted in my code. Here it is again with corrections, and more detail.
    string m_run= "c:\my programs\adobe\photoshope.exe" //This is saved in the program and can be set to any program the user wants to use. it's saved in the programtextBox.Text noted eailer, which is saved to the hard drive.
    string m_file= "c:\file\anypicture.jpg" ;// picture that is selected in the interface.
    Process myProcess = new Process();
    myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = m_run;
    myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments = m_file;
    String m_arguments = myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments.ToString().Trim();
    myProcess.Start();
    This is a windows form program.
    It looks to me like you're either redacting or modifying your actual code before posting.  I could be wrong about that, but I'm pretty sure because:
    If you were calling Process.Start() against program files/adobe/photoshope.exe I believe that you'd get a Win32 Exception since I don't think that file exists in any photoshop installation.
    I sincerely doubt that you're actually working with "file/anypicture.jpg."
    I'm confused by the declaration of m_arguments which is never used.  I assume it is in fact used somewhere in your code.
    Finally, you have stated that the program to open files with is pre-defined, so I suspect that data is actually being pulled from a variable instead of from a hard string as in your "example."
    If that's the case then you might as well go shoot yourself in the foot, since that would do exactly as much good as asking for help with broken code and then posting pseudo-code instead of what doesn't work.  It's like telling an auto mechanic your
    car dies every time you hit 22 miles per hour, while delivering your bicycle for service.

    I tried to partition him using bootcamp but didn't have mac os cd neither mac instalation. the problem i am dealing now its that i cant go back to OS partition since its not appeared when i restart c and no win drivers to have a properly running system. I've thought as an option to re-download boot-camp and run the instalation from windows partition and see if i can repair it that way, didnt try yet thought just in case anyone has a better prposition or dealed with the same problem

    Take it to your local Apple Store or AASP, it's covered by a 1 year hardware warranty. If you have AppleCare then give them a call but I'm pretty sure they will advise the same. If you have not purchased AppleCare yet please do, this will extend the warranty to 3 years however it MUST be purchased within the first  year of ownership. Let it go 366 days and you are out of luck. AppleCare will also include telephone support too.
    Good luck.

  • I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install them

    I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install for free?  I see that I could go to the apple store and purchase them again but I belibve that since I had already purchased them; I would get a free copy for my Imac.  Do I got something confused here?  Please help.

    Whoever told you that was misinformed or lying. Those applications are sold separately for the iOS platform and the Mac platform.
    Go to the Mac App Store to purchase Pages and Numbers for your Mac. They're $20 each. If you are running an older version of Mac OS X that can't use the Mac App Store, you can purchase install media from Apple.

  • Integration - Windows Server 2003/2008R2: Creating a login script that attaches programs to a certain user group. Upgrading to Windows 7/8

    We are currently running a windows server 2003 environment with a 2003 server being the DC. We have a couple of 2008 r2 servers that are member servers.
    OK...
    Our users are primarily operating off of windows xp clients/workstations in which they use RDP to connect to the newer member servers that are windows 2008. With their base profile in xp I am using roaming profiles via server 2003. I am looking to begin
    upgrading all of the workstations to all-in-one windows7/8 boxes partially because of cosmetic reasons(#weird) and partially because we will eventually begin using the camera options that are in the all-in-one's.
    Also..I must do this one at a time as we don't have the money to do a complete overhaul of all client workstations..If that was the case, I could just redo the network and make those members servers the DC and backup DC as well as add a virtual server
    in which everyone can access those legacy programs that are still needed...
    As you guys know windows 7/8 boxes will not work with server 2003 and roaming profiles. The reason we don't completely upgrade to 2008 r2 environment is because we are still holding on to a legacy program that requires server 2003 and these programs are
    vital to our operation.
    So..broken down even further...
    A: User is part of a 'LocalAdmins' group that makes them automatically a local admin upon any system within our domain.
    B: User  logs in to windows xp with credentials in which a tailored made per user roaming profile comes up from server 2003
    C: User then logs into one of the two terminal servers via RDP with same credentials and accesses new primary application. To access the legacy applications, they merely minimize their RDP session to get back to the windows xp session.
    Ultimately..
    1. I'd like to begin replacing option B: with windows 7/8 all-in-ones and and have the RDP saved sessions,that talk to the 2008 member servers, as well as, a few vital ie shortcuts automatically come to all users that are apart of that "LocalAdmins
    group period.
    2. Setup 1 server 2003 box that runs that legacy program and allow everyone access via a Virtual Environment..
    3. If they log into a windows xp box, or a windows 7/8 box, I want them to have access to the same icons.
    I guess this is a lot to digest, but my question is, what script could I make that would essentially allow uniformity for both my xp workstations and newly added windows 7/8 boxes? What script could I create that would,I guess reside on server 2003, that
    brings all the neccessary icons to the users that are apart of that "LocalAdmins" group despite having a windows xp, 7, or 8 workstation?

    " I don't see what the issue is because a logon script will still be managed by Group Policy and will have to be applied using GP rules.  In the end you still have to write the script."
    You basically contradicted the smug part of your rant and multiple answers with this statement!!! You just recognized that some sort of script would be necessary if I chose to use it via group policy.
    But according to you..
    "It is not and has never been done via a script."
    Clearly it has a section per user for a "profile path" and a "logon SCRIPT". Which warrants my creation of this post since I have currentely implemented
    roaming profiles. That is how I am manipulating what users can have on their desktop because of course, we have different users that have different needs. But out of all the users, there are programs that need to be laced and seen upon immediate login.I
    will consult other people as this is only preliminary planning but about half of your statements are completely unwarranted and UNNECESSARY!
    This statement also proves your additional inaccuracies...
    "All of the profile things are handled by Windows and have nothing to do with scripts.  You define all of that in Group Policy."
    That's just silly talk. I told you in my initial break down of my scenario in an entirety that I am using "tailored made per user roaming profiles" to control desktop environments not group policies in this case. But you just made an absolute statement in
    saying "You define all of that in Group policy" which is completely wrong...
    Do me a favor, please don't respond to this post anymore. I'd love to see if any other partner, staff or whatever mind responding. Thank you for your help anyway. I will use what is useful in your post and discard the rest.
    Thanks
