ITU Approves H.265 Video Standard

"A new video coding standard building on the ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC and opening the door to future video transmission using only half the bandwidth was agreed by ITU members on Friday.
The new standard, known informally as - High Efficiency Video Coding - (HEVC) will need only half the bit rate of  its predecessor, ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 - Advanced  Video Coding - (AVC), which currently accounts for over 80  per cent of all web video.
The ITU/ISO/IEC Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding  (JCT-VC) (formerly JVT) will continue work on a range of  extensions to HEVC, including support for 12-bit video as  well as 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma formats."
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=35575
I eagerly await the day we get affordable cameras recording 12 bit, 4:2:2 to SDXC cards.

Yes, H.265 will usher in 4k (Ultra HD).
That's what I was getting at about Blu-ray disc. The only way the studios can pack a 4k movie and features on a Blu-ray is with a codec that can use less bandwidth than H.264/MPEG-2. Current players don't support larger BDXL discs like 100-128GB (as far as I know), so if they want to sell people 4k BDs the only way they can do that is to update the spec. And believe me they want to sell people 4k Blu-rays. BDs are the last physical media and they aren't going to miss an opportunity to sell you more BD players, new movies on BD, and of course the Godfather, Star Wars sagas, et al in 4k. And conveniently the board of directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association includes all of the major movie studios. So, in short, H.265 Blu-ray is inevitable because the BD Association wants to sell more BDs and has to upgrade the spec to do so. And because as ebusinessmedia pointed out, they can. From what I've read they've already been considering this for sometime now.
Incidentally, H.265 is also the best bet for television services providers being able to deliver broadcast 4k content because of the lower bandwidth as well.
Long live H.265...or at least until H.266.

  • Switching Video Standard?

    Hi all,
I'm using iMovie with my Canon Rebel T1i Camera for videos. The T1i records movies at 720p resolution with 30 fps. I've so far created many projects and all look good. However, I just discovered that I had PAL - 25 FPS chosen as "Video Standard" in iMovie preferences (in the video tab). I would like to switch this to NTSC - 30 FPS. However, by choosing this setting all my current projects are now messed up, i.e., the starts and ends of the video clips are now different in the project because of the changed frame rate.
Can I somehow make the change to NTSC without messing up my current projects? Can I somehow set the Video Standard individually for each project? I would really like to switch to 30 FPS for smoother playback, but I do not want to mess up all my existing projects :-/
Many thanks and all the best,
    Michael

.. now all the clips in my projects are wrong, i.e., They start too early and end too soon. I think - as you say - iMovie now interprets my event data as 30 FPS instead of 25 FPS which causes a shift of the clip boundaries for my project.
hmmm.. not here.. but, to be honest, my few NTSC Projects are very short (just some 'tests') .. hard to tell, if anything gets out of sync, when I switch back to my PAL projects..
and, as I mentioned above: when you ctrl-click on any of your Event clips/choose 'Reveal in Finder', you'll notice, that the correspoding .mov are 'hardcoded' to 25 (if iM is set to 25), or 29.97 (if iM is set to 29.97...). -
.. If I re-import my event data, won't that cause all projects to lose their references to the event data?
    that is the sad truth..
but 'forcing' a video standard conversion (=the underlying QTengine don't just downsamples framerates, it is a conversion) doesn't add any quality.. rule#1 in video: stay in your format (NTSC/PAL)..

The video standard of Hungary isn't SECAM_D!!! I think, it's a "fatal error", it may cause lots of problems for hungarian people. "Dear dealer", please fix this bug, because I'm very angry!
If you are also from Hungary and your card doesn't work properly (therefore this bug and the other bugs...) please help me and write what did you do!

  • Changing video standards

Is there a way to change video standards in a project (PAL->NTSC) without having to rebuild the entire project from scratch?
I've created a DVD Studio Pro project with the disk's video standard set to PAL for European use. It contains a couple dozen video assets, links, buttons, &c.
I'd like to change/copy the project to NTSC.
Changing the video standard in the project's info pane results in an error msg saying that the standard can't be changed with video assets in the project.
Removing the assets from the assets pane results in an error that the video is still in use by the project.
    Thanks in advance!
    Scott

    Nope!
You must re-encode your assets to NTSC format: videos, menu grahics/backgrounds, etc and reauthor in a new DVDSP NTSC project.
    Hope that helps !

  • What Digital Video Standards apply to VideoMaster

    Hi,
I am using NI VideoMASTER for Digital Video Analysis.  After running a sample set of tests, I have a set of results but do not know whether they are good or bad.
Does anyone know if there is an ITU set of standards that I can use to rate the product I am testing to determine how good/ bad it actually is?
In the VideoMaster help there is a section on setting limits but it does not state what the limits hould be set to!  Any help on this appreciated.
    Rgds,
    Sean

    Hi Sean,
    I hope you are well.
You should be looking for the detailed design specifications of DVI and HDMI formats from the relative organizations. For example: http://www.hdmi.org/index.aspx. You will also need to look into the specifications of the video formats, for example, 720p and1080i in order to make judgement to the results. If your results lay within their published specifications, it can be regarded as a valid signal.
VideoMASTER does not implictly contain any caps or limits, as they depend on what signal you are measuring and whether you are measuring for studio quality setup or for the consumers. The margin can be quite different.

  • PO value limits - approval limits local vs standard

    Hi Experts,
I have the following problem: for reporting purposes I need to identify an user approval limit.
Looking in the organizational structure --> extended attributes --> Po value limits I find two values:
    - Standard values - Approval limit;
    - Local values - approval limit.
What is the difference between them? Which one should I use?
Other question is, how can I get this information? I am going to table HRP5503 and I can only get the local values.
    Thanks in advance,
    Francisco

Any help on the above query is appreciated. I am facing the somewhat similar issue. For some of the users standard value field is there and for others its not present under PO value limits(only local value field available). Can someone tell me the root cause for this? Is this role dependent ??

Hi, I'm new guy using the NI video master for video measurement. May I know NI have any standard video(composite and component) file and  standard measurement (composite and component) specification for reference? If yes, please share to us. If NO, please advice which specification NI refer for this video master.
    Please share. Thanks.

This is not the correct forum for this question. I suggest you post this in the NI VideoMASTER forum.

  • Video standards and adding pre-loader/buffer

    Hi,
I have a a smallish Captivate course (25 slides) where each slide has audio (3-5 sec.) and the presentation as a whole has 4 FLVs inserted as Insert --> Slide Video.  The Videos are all 640 x 360, flv, 2-3 minutes with the following sizes: 10M, 16M, 22M, 33M.
We're using Captivate 5 and Camtasia for the video editing.
    My questions:
    Are these unreasonable video sizes?
How can I add in preloader or buffer?  They play great in the US but are jittery in the EU, even after hosting on European server, so I'm trying everythign I can to  compress and make it more manageable and a less interrupted viewing experience.
    Thank you!

Hi, They might not be unreasonable but they might create issues sometimes. But you can add a preloader by following the steps given below -
    1) Cp 5 - Edit - preferences
    2) Project - Start and End
    3) Check on the preloader check box and browse through the one that you want to use
    4) Bring down the % to about 20 or 30 so that when this much part has been loaded..the presentation starts playing

  • I1Profiler update: supports video standards!

"X-Rite released an update of iPro filer, its color management software. Some of the new features are nice (new paper sizes, White point editing, and i1Pro 2 spectrophotometer added support for monitor, projector, and printer profiling). Some are kinda weird (like added Russian language support…)"
Has anyone had experience with this yet?
I found one article here on installing the update, but I want to know what the experience is like with calibration and color correction.  I have never dealt with this software before and want to know more. Any help would great.

  • Standard Purchased Order Re-approval (R12.1.3) - Reg

    Hi Friends,
I couldnt able to generate a re-approval notification for the Standard Purchase Order.
My higher approvers dont want to re-approve the approved purchased order again with in the tolerance days, if the days exceeds the tolerance days then needed re-approval.
    Flow as follows:
    1. Needed by date set to 150 days in Tolerance and Routing.
    2. Created a standard PO  with a current date as 28-10-2013 and got approved with the higer approvers.
    2. Now i have changed the needed by date to 25-03-2013 (148 days- with in tolerance days), got re approved at the user itselft with a revision.
    3. Now i have changed the needed by date to 31-03-2013(above 150 days) now  a re-approval notification should go to the hierarchy approvers.
But in my case the re-approval notification is not generating.
Kindly look into this issue and suggest me as the earliest.
    Thanks

  • How do i resize videos from my iPhone into iMovie so that they are the correct width and height as a standard youtube is ????

Hey guys i have recorded some videos on my iphone and i have synced them to my mac.
i would now like to edit them using imovie, the only problem i have is that when i open them in imovie, quicktime, vlc etc etc, they all playback at the same width and height as the iphone screen.
now is there any way using imovie that i would be able to resize the video to make it larger so that the video is the correct height and width of a video that you would see on youtube.
If this makes sense and if there is anyway of doing please let me know as i have tried looking for a shortcut or a plug in everywhere and i just cant seem to do it.
    Thanks

  • Video editing size outside of standard formats.

I work since first generation with FCP and orderd the new "X" version. In my work I have a lot of special formats, out of the natives like 768 x 576, 1080p. I not could find in the new FCP X as I could create my own, customed formats. Yes, I could use AE or FCP 7, but hope make everything easey as Apple always promote. Do any one have an idea

The application only works at video standard resolutions.

  • Unable to play/load video in Elements trial

I just downloaded the trial edition of Elements 10 for the Mac, and am having a problem viewing the video. I've searched the forum and tried all the suggestions I've seen (permissions, root user, reboot, reinstall, etc.), but nothing seems to work. There are two basic problems I'm seeing:
After loading a video file, either from an existing project downloaded from lynda.com or a video file on my Mac, double-clicking a clip and clicking the "Play" button does not play the video. The button changes from the play to pause icon, but nothing happens. Dragging the scroll bar or holding down the right arrow key advances the video, but it will not play by itself. Strangely, any audio files (also from lynda.com) do not play either.
When trying to import from an older DV camcorder (JVC GR-D70U), the tape will play and can be controlled by Elements, and I can see video on the camcorder screen, but no video is shown in the Elements capture screen nor is any video captured. When I stop the capture, I'm told that no frames were captured.
All the above steps work fine with iMovie (different lynda.com tutorial files, of course), and I can import, play, and do most anything that iMovie allows. Having run into the limitations of iMovie I really would like to move up a step or two; hence my trying out Premiere Elements 10. So far it's been a complete bust since it doesn't appear to allow me to play video, no matter what I try. It's such a basic problem that there must be one underlying reason that no video capture or playback works, but after playing with it for the past two days and googling everything I can find on the subject, I'm about to give up.
The system is a Mac Pro (3,1), dual quad-core 2.8 GHz Xeons, 16 GB of memory, OS 10.6.8, with an NVidia GeForce 8800GT video card and two Dell 24 inch monitors. Not the latest and greatest, but it should be more than adequate for my simple needs (and I'm hoping that the video card is OK). Since things run fine with iMovie my assumption is that the video file formats are OK, especially since a simple import from a DV camcorder works on iMovie but not Elements 10. I've seen references that allude to the fact that some video formats don't work on the trial edition but will play OK if you buy the complete package, but unless there's a money-back guarantee, that seems a bit extreme.
So, any ideas or additional things that I might try? As I said, it's probably one basic thing that is causing the video problems, but I've tried everything I can think of and have been able to find on the web/forums with no luck at all. Any suggestions, advice, or recommendations that anyone might be able to give woudl be greatly appreciated.

    Bill & John,
Thanks for the pointers and info - very helpful; and informativel. My apologies for missing the file info via QuickTime - I should have figured that out by myself. In any case, I'll concentrate on the lynda.com files. I suspect that since this is probably a single problem affecting everything, figuring that issue out will solve the other file problems as well.
Looking at at of the lynda.com videos with MediaInfo (thanks, John), I get the following screen shot (hope this comes through OK):

For Bill's question about importing, I have numerous imported videos. A lot were translated from very old 8mm family tapes were done commercially. Others were imported via the Canpous ADVC 100, which is a hardware device that accepts S-VHS and other inputs from a video source and outputs digital video. Basically a way to grab and convert old video formats to a computer. All were done on a Mac, and all play very well via QuickTime.
Any ideas from the above? And as always, I'm sure that this is some sort of setup/hardware/configuration problem on my part that is affecting all the videos, since I find it hard to believe that the video files themselves are at fault, especially since I took all the defaults on installation.
I'll try installing on a MacBook Pro to see if the problem persists and let you know how that goes.

  • Video capture device bad image/no sound

    Hi !!
I bought this "grabby" usb dongle from terratec to record old vhs cassete on my computer, but is doesn't work on linux. (It works ok on win7, so cable-connections problems are excluded)
On vlc I did 'open capture device', choose /dev/video0 for vid, hw:2,0 for sound(tried them all anyway), and PAL/SECAM video standard.
Problem is I have a super crappy video image (on mplayer also), and no sound. The video is colored, I recogize it, but the pixels are huge, it's awfull.
After some research I found that a module named em28xx is supposed to handle this device. I found some forum post here and there about the sound problem, it is addressed with a 3years old patch on em28xx-cards.c (which doesn't exist on my machine, so I couldn't apply it).

Concerning the cables, you are right they are not special at all it is standard : there is the triple (yellow=composite video, red/white for audio) cable and a fourth one for video but with inferior quality, I didn't connect it (it's either the yellow or this one for video)
