ITune 10 crashed iPod, TM won't restore iTunes, iTunes "damaged" now

I had iTunes 9, upgraded yesterday to 10. Daughter purchased music this morning, connected her 3rd Gen iPod and iTunes locked up her iPod and then required a restore. iTunes was stuck in a restore loop. I closed iTunes, restarted the iMac and tried again, still would not recognize the iPod and was looped on restoring. The iPod doesn't respond at all now, it messages to use iTunes to restore.
I searched the forums here, it was suggested to use Time Machine to revert back to iTunes 9. I tried to do that and got the message, "You can't copy iTunes.app because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that colume doesn't distinguish between upper - and lowercase letters in filenames."
Now when I try to open iTunes I get the message that "You can't open the application iTunes.app because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Any help on what to do?
Thanks, Sandy

OK, never mind. I was able to get a working copy of iTunes 10 back on the iMac using Time Machine. I still have a broken looking iTunes icon (says it's damaged) in the Dock, but I'm putting it in the trash.
Not sure if this is the solution that I really wanted, but at least iTunes is working. After a lof of resets/restores in the iPod and attaching it to a different power source than the iMac, I was finally able to get it to respond. Not sure what happened here this morning, but I sure don't like it.

  • My iPod Nightmare (won't restore in itunes 7)

    My iPod Nightmare
    My specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (fully updated)
    iTunes 7.0
    iPod Video 60GB 5th Generation
Problems started about a month ago. At first, I stopped being able to eject the iPod, from iTunes or from Windows directly. This lasted for a few days. Then, iTunes stopped recognizing the iPod altogether, though Windows still recognized it as a mass storage device.
I then tried using the iPod Updater tool to restore my iPod. It gave me an "iPod service error", and refused to restore it. After restarting my computer multiple times, reinstalling the latest version of the updater tool, and still getting the same error, my iPod died completely. All it gave me was a folder with an exclamation point, and a link to the Apple support website. The batteries eventually dwindled away to the point where I could no longer turn on my iPod.
A couple weeks later, about a day after iTunes 7.0 was introduced, I brought my iPod to an Apple Store in hopes that they could replace it with a new one (I figured the harddrive was fried and it was beyond fixing). To my suprise, the tech guy actually got it to work again, though he formatted it for a Mac. So he went back to format it for Windows. About 20 minutes later, he came out and gave me some excuse about Norton Antivirus not allowing him to restore it, but that if I brought it home and reformatted it with iTunes 7, it should work fine.
So I took it home and plugged it into my computer, with my brand new installation of iTunes 7.0. To my joy it recognized my iPod, and said it needed to be reformatted/updated. So it downloaded the software it needed from the music store, and began the process of restoring it with the updates.
About halfway through, iTunes informed me that a restore error had occured, and that the iPod could not be restored. so I ejected my iPod, closed out of iTunes, restarted my computer, and tried again.
When I plug iPod in now, it first tells me that "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore.....". It tells me that my ipod is up to date. When I click the restore button, it says "There was a rpoblem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "iPod". The requested resource was not found."
And now I'm stuck. I checked around on the Apple knowledge base and discussion forums for hours, found nothing to help me. I called Apple Tech Support, who's brilliant advice was to check the Apple support site (which I have been doing pretty much every day for the last month). He then wanted to charge me $50 for the phone call (rofl). After I told the tech support guy that I was under no circumstances giving them $50, he let me at least describe my problem to him. Then he recommended that I completely uninstall iTunes, reinstall, and try again (this did nothing whatsoever, although it gave me more headaches when the installer informed me that it couldn't start the iPodService the first time around).
I've been an iPod fan and owner for many years, but I am so frusterated right now that I'm seriously considering other options for portable music players. iTunes 7.0 is one of the buggiest, most overbloated pieces of software I have ever encountered that passes itself off as a "final" version (this release should have been a beta). But for now, I just want my iPod to work. Can anyone help me?

  • IPod Classic won't restore or format

My iPod Classic 160gb won't restore. When I connect it, iTunes says it's corrupted and needs to be restored. When I try to restore, iTunes tries to install the update and then restore. Then iPod resets, like it was restored, but it isn't - there're all the files that there were. When I try to restore it in disc mode, iTunes just can't restore it and shows error 1439.
I tried to format it, but Windows says, that it cannot format it. Both in "normal" and disc mode.
When I try to open it i, it says to insert disc.
iPod is visible both in My Computer and iTunes. In iTunes - as corrupted. My Computer says it has 0kb.
iPod itself works fine - it plays music and do other stuff that iPod should do.
    What should I do?
I have Windows 7 Home Premium.

  • Ipod photo won't restore in OSX

I've tried the five "r's", but the ipod updater won't recognize the ipod in order to restore. This ipod sync'd just fine a few weeks ago. I have reinstalled itunes and ipod software, still no go.
    Any ideas?

This is the same issue that I have. I believe it has something to do with transfering files onto your iPod during the same connection that you've used to automatically update your iTunes songs and playlists within iTunes. I've heard that even with "enable disk use" activated in your prefs, you still need to disconnect and reconnect in order to properly copy files onto your iPod. That also means switching your prefs to "automatically update playlists and songs" for when you connect for your iPod updates and then setting it to "manually update your playlists and songs" + "enable disk use" for when you want to use your iPod as a file transfer device.
Have your iPods all started acting up like this around the same time that you began copying files to your iPod? I would like to know what's causing this. This is second time (on 2 iPods!) that this has happened to me! I've never been able to trouble shoot it myself. I've always had to go back to the Applestore for a replacement.

  • TS1372 ipod classic won't restore

can't restore ipod classic error 1439

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • IPod Mini won't restore back to factory settings

I have a iPod Mini and ever since I downloaded iTunes 7 I've had a few problems.
The new iTunes won't let me restore my settings. When I try to do it I get an error message that says the iPod couldn't be restored "An unknown error occurred (1428)."
Another problem is that I have no songs/podcasts on my Mini but it says I only have 16.1 MB of free space. I've already re-stalled iTunes and resetted the iPod itself.
    Nothing seems to work.
Anybody know how to solve this problem?

I bought my ipod mini off of ebay and it only came with the ipod, no software or connectors. I bought the connectors seperately. My issue is this: when connecting to my computer I cannot find the songs off of the mini. nor can i figure out what the itunes purpose is. I am unable to find the mini on the itunes layout anywhere.
    can you help?

  • 4G iPod Touch won't restore.

    I bought a 32g iPod Touch 4g last night.
I was using it for an hour or 2, downloading iBook, checking Facebook and the camara when it froze and restarted.
Now, when I plug it into my computer, iTunes tells me it needs restoring, so I click restore. It says Extracting software or something and then an error message appears.
    Unknown error (9), I think.
And now I can't use my Ipod at all. It won't turn on (other than showing me the Apple logo and the iTunes logo with a USB cable image), won't restore and just plain won't respond.
    Any help is appreciated.

Download RecBoot and try and kick it out of recovery mode.

My brand new Ipod Nano won't sync with my Itunes.  The Itunes software tells me to restore my Nano, The screen it tells me to restore using isn't on my Nano, but I restore to factory settings, and it still won't work.  Gives me a message in Itunes"The iPod "iPod" cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application."  What???  I just plugged it into the computer after opening it in the box from the store?

Make sure the Enable disk use option is NOT ticked from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. If you do have to remove this tick mark, be sure to hit the Apply button in the lower left hand corner of the window in iTunes to update the changes to your device. Then try restoring it again.

A few weeks back my mini suddenly stopped working and showed a folder with an exclamation point. I have tried everything suggested on this site, 5 R's, re-formatting through Windows etc and the closest I can get to restoring is going into disk mode and clicking Restore on the Updater software, but when I do this I get a message saying "Can't mount Ipod" Does anyone know how I can resolve this? I have tried this on 2 different computers, the Ipod shows up in Windows but it won't restore.

  • Help! ipod classic won't restore but hard drive is fine

    Hello,
i have kept an ipod classic for several years, my first one an 80 GB and i had that working wonderfully for 3 years and then the hard drive failed and so my dad got me a new 160 GB off of e-bay, slightly used but it said the hard drive was checked out and everything was good to go. When i got it i looked at the number of Reallocs and Pending Sectors and the hard drive shoulod be just fine, but when i tried syncing it the first time everything looked good, it said welcome to your new ipod and all of that, i restored it and it said that it restored successfully, so i syncedall my 40 GB of data including videos, audiobooks, podcasts, games and music and it showed every little thing loading individually like it used to with my old one, and then when i ejected it and disconnected it then looked at the ipod itself it said no music, no videos, no audiobooks, nothing showed up!! I went to setting and looked at the about and it showed 40 GB gone, but when i looked into that it showed up as other. so i tried it all again, restoring and re-synching and all of that, and it would give me a variety of different error messages listed below:
could not copy to ADMIN'S IPOD the selected disc is not available
synching to ipod failed an unknown error occured (-59)
synching to ipod failed an unknown error occured (-60)
cannot synch to ipod, no drive is selected
cannot sync to ipod, selected disc does not exist
cannot sync to ipod selected drive is currently in use
connect to power (even while fully charged)
and then i tried formatting with my computer and "scanning and fixing problems" with my computer documents
    didnt work
    re-did diagnostic test
    shows drive is fine
tried synching one playlist and one season of my videos

The iPod's hard drive seems to be unreliable.  The used iPod from eBay may need to be returned.
You can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes and connect the iPod.  iTunes may then prompt you to do a Restore.
If that does not work, but the iPod is recognized by Windows, you can try using Windows to reformat the iPod, like it's a USB external drive.  Use FAT (FAT32) as the format type.  If you have the option to do a "quick" format, choose to do a FULL format.  If you are able to complete this procedure, run iTunes, connect the iPod, and do a Restore.  Even if iTunes does not prompt you to do a Restore, it is important that you do a Restore, because after Windows reformats the iPod's hard drive, it does not have any of its onboard software.  The Restore is needed to reinstall its software.

  • IPod Touch won't restore on new Computer

    Hi,
I recently bought a new desktop (ASUS All-in-One) I loaded the latest version of iTunes but when I tried to sync my iPod Touch 4th generation with it it said it had to be reset. No problem there, I hit the restore button and now my iPod is stuck in restore mode and I keep getting a 3014 error. I have Googled the problem and tried all the fixes suggested. Nothing has fixed it.
The Network Connectivity diagnostics are fine, the firewall (Comodo) has been checked out and it isn't the problem (I even completely uninstalled it), the modem is not the problem either (it works with my other laptop).
I am at my wits end. Hope someone can help.
