ITune Folder Size

Not sure whether this is the right category. I'll put it in "Tiger", too.
Got Sony DVDs. 4.7GB.
When I click on the iTunes folder and "Get Info", it's shows 4.6GB in it.
Try to drag and drop it in order to burn it onto a DVD for backup and get a message saying it's too large a file for the disk. I should delete some tunes.
Check the amount of GB available on the disk in Disk Utility. Says "0". Tried three of them with the same result. Not sure what this means.
Also: when I put the disks into the drive, the icon that shows up as a folder with a burn symbol on it. Not a disk symbol.
I'm really not sure what this stuff means. I could start deleting songs/albums from iTunes...but not sure whether that's the problem.
The file should be able to fit onto the DVD. (?)
Thanks for your time.

I posted the same question in the "Tiger" forum and am on the right track with the answers I've gotten there. Thank you.

When you burn a DVD or a CD a directory has to be created on it so that the computer will know what is on the media. This takes a certain amount of the available space. I don't know how much of the space it takes as it depends upon the size of the directory. With the total of your library being so close to the rated capacity of the disk there probably isn't enough room for a directory to be created.
You will need to reduce the size of your library in order to do the burn.

  • ITunes Folder size compared to available media in iTunes

My iTunes folder is listed at 127.95 GB, however I only have 78.42 GB of music/movies/tv shows in iTunes. I have a hard time believing that 49.53 GB are iTunes system files.... ***???

I'm not at my own computer right now but I think the television shows are all in a sub-folder in the iTunes Music folder. Same with podcasts and audiobooks. How you proceed is going to depend on your back up software. If you're just dragging and dropping to an external, I think you could close iTunes, drag the video folder out of your iTunes Music Folder, drag and drop the iTunes Music folder to the external. When it's done, be sure to put the video folder back before starting iTunes again or it won't be able to find it. If you're using back up software, just follow whatever procedures the software requires to select what you want to back up and don't select the video.
Keep in mind that I don't use Windows as my primary operating system so you may have to translate.

  • Discrepancy between iTunes Library size and stored folder size

    Hi
I'm looking around for ways to clear up my computer's hard drive, and typically it seems that my iLife libraries seem to be the bulk of it. The main problem is that iTunes claims that my iTunes Library size is some 21GB, when the size of the "iTunes Library" folder claims all the music accounts to 26GB. This doesn't include any content in the 'TV Shows' or 'Movies' folders.
The only thing I can think of is that not all of the music in my iTunes Music folder is in my iTunes Library... is there a simple way to check which ones aren't? Or is there another reason why there would be such a difference in the sizes?
    Thanks in advance.

It may take some creative thinking rather than expertise to figure this one out.
Oh, and my girlfriend got herself a standard MacBook a month ago, which has possibly sown the seeds of envy since it has as much RAM and a faster processor than my PowerBook MacBook Pro-wise, let's see what MacWorld in 2 weeks brings

  • How do you update playlists when using a network itunes folder ?

I am trying to use a Network storage drive to keep my itunes libary on,the two problems i have are that even though the network drive is selected the playlists don't seem to be saved to the drive when i make new ones and also when i reboot the mac it defaults back to the local itunes folder.
    Thanks
    Matt.

Yes, the files get bigger and take up more room. Will you notice a difference on Apple's earplugs, no...played through a home entertainment system is a different result. I have found the best sound and file size/hard drive space usage to be encoding music files in ACC 192 kbps.

  • Moving iTunes folder to an external drive.  How ?

My pBook 17" is bloated with iPhoto PICS and iTunes music store purchases. Moving the photo library, and running it off of the LACIE external FW 800 drive was easy. Not with iTunes. I moved the entire iTunes folder to the external, but every time I launch iTunes on the PBook it opens a blank library. How do I get iTunes to recognize the library on the external HD, without a lose of date added, etc. Apple Care was no help, and had no answer. BTW, after erasing the iTunes library from my PB HD, and moving the library back to the PB, everything works as normal. The iTunes library is 10 gB in size BTW.
    thanks in advance, rick

It's not hard to overlook something obvious, happens to me too once in a while, so let's start from scratch.
Forget the KB article for know. I just performed all the steps in it on a 'test' account with a small (test) library, and could not detect any anomalies.
The article is OK, but might not be 100% clear (I second William's remark)
    Steps to do:
    • Quit iTunes (and other applications that use the EHD)
    • Unmount and disconnect your external HD.
    • Run iTunes and verify that you can play all music. If OK, then it has to be on the Powerbook. If you are presented with exclamation marks, it was already on the EHD.
    • You've consolidated the Library a couple of times now, so it should be all together in ~Users/YourUsername/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music.
    • Connect your EHD
    • In iTunes, change the 'iTunes Music folder location' to the location on your EHD, where you want the music to be. To be sure, create a new folder.
    • Now 'Consolidate Library...' again. iTunes will start copying the music. If it doesn't, I'll eat my hat (to be honest, I don't have a hat).
    Let know what happens.

  • Library file corrupted and absolute chaos in my itunes folder

    Hi,
Is there any way to retrieve the library folder that contains all the info for the playlists?
I just bought a macbook pro with yosemite from June 2014 and wanted to sync my itunes library. I had all on an external hard drive and then hit absolute disaster:
Itunes 12 won't recognise an old library file from itunes 9.2.1.
So from the previous libraries folder I dragged the file into the itunes folder, renamed it, opened 12 but none of my playlists showed up and none of my over 12000 podcasts either.
    Only purchased songs were visible.
I finally realised that 9.2.1 works in yosemite when opened from the external hard drive. I assigned the itunes folder and presto everything showed up.
But then I made the huge mistake of opening in itunes 12 again and for some reason it resorted all the files in an impossible way. It created a folder for every podcast edition and then chucked a hole lot of mp3s into the trash. The itunes folder is now utterly unrecognisable and the library file won't open in 9.2.1 any more. The library files from previous library folder do not work in 9.2.1 either any more, it's a mess and took me previously months to create the right order.
I had also reduced the podcasts in file size to fit them all onto my ipod classic and now it's all gone.
Is there any way at all that I can retrieve the library file from my ipod to re-create the order that I had?

i just migrated all my mp3's over to a new computer. installed the latest version of itunes 6.
when you open itunes on a 'clean' install, there are no songs in your library folder.
so what i did was copied 5 gigs of songs into the default itunes folder into "my documents/my music/itunes/itunes music" folder. to be honest, your 'music' folder can be on any local drive on your machine. i just put mine where i can access it quicker than a networked drive or itunes sharing from another computer.
then in the 'file' column, i did "add folder to my library" to load the songs into the library. after about 15 minutes, itunes had all 5 gigs of my songs. i'm listening to my itunes as we speak.
    good luck.
btw- if it doesnt do it the first time.
un-install itunes, re-start, install itunes, re-start, then do the above...

  • How do you see iTunes library size

need to find out how many GB my iTunes music file is on iTunes.

    scbrocato wrote:

There is no “iTunes music file”.
There is an iTunes folder located in /Music/.
Select it in a Finder window and right click - Get info.
As ed suggested, use the Status bar.
Note that this only shows the size of the selected item (Music, Movies, TV, etc.) it does not show the size of the entire iTunes folder (which contains everything including the iTune library files, artwork folder and some other stuff.

  • ITunes Libary Size?

    Hey everyone,
I just have a simple question. My iTunes library size is around 23GB, this is what iTunes displays in the bottom of the program. However, when I go to my iTunes music folder. It says I have around 36GB of files. Is there something wrong, or are there hidden files in my iTunes music folder that are accounting for this huge difference of library size.
    Thanks for any answers.

    Hello Confuzzeled,
It seems likely that you have more content in your iTunes Library than just music. The statistics you see at the bottom of the iTunes window only apply to the type of content you have selected under the Library header in the left column.
In addition to your music, content such as Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Apps, Ringtones and album artwork are all stored in the iTunes folder. I'm looking at 6GB of music on my own system, but I also have about 2GB of the other types of content, so my iTunes folder registers just over 8.6GB when I get info on it.
    Hope this helps,
    Charles

  • Practical / Theoretical Maximum iTunes Library Size?

I'm about to digitize a rather huge CD library and was wondering whether there are (1) practical and (2) theoretical / technical maximum numbers of tracks an iTunes library can hold.
RE: (1): If you're an iTunes user with a very large library (100,000 tracks or more), does your setup work OK in a single library?
RE: (2): Applefolk: Is there any hard limit (or practical technical limit) to the number of tracks a library contain, assuming disk space is not an issue for either music storage or library file size?

    long response ahead...
The gist of your comment was: don't make playlists for each album.
    Correct.
It defeats some of the underlying power of iTunes
It doesn’t really defeat it, it simply duplicates what is already there, which makes creating the playlists pretty much a waste of your time.
I am beginning to think that you are correct, although there are still some unresolved browsing issues
    Such as?
    I got onto this thread when I was searching for some possible causes of the tremendous slowdown I am seeing in my iTunes [I have about 26,000 songs, and perhaps 00 or more playlists, and lots of folders; I organized things this way because it's the way I am used to browsing my library}
And I am thinking that the playlists and folders are what is slowing this magila down.
Could be, but 26000 songs is not a lot.
iTunes uses the library.itl file as the database. The larger it is, the more it will have to search thru to do anything.
There's no way to tell for sure without creating a new library. I have the disk space for this, but I would lose the playcount meta data, so have not tried this yet.
Simply create new library and leave the old one alone.
    1 – Quit iTunes.
2 - Copy the iTunes.itl file into the backup folder in the iTunes folder. Just add the date to the end of the filename to keep it straight. (this step is not really necessary but better safe than sorry)
3 - Hold down the Option key when starting iTunes. Select Create new library.
Create it somewhere and make sure it is clearly labeled something like iTunes test library so you won’t “lose” it.
4 - Go to iTunes prefs -> Advanced – Importing. Uncheck Copy files to iTunes library.
5 – Drag the original iTunes music folder (where all your music is currently stored) onto the library in the iTunes source (top left of iTunes window).
It’ll add these files to the new library but will not copy them into the new library folder.
All you are doing is creating a new library.itl where you told it in step 3.
Once done, see how it runs.
To get back to the old library, quit iTunes, hold Shift when starting iTunes and select the original iTunes folder (the default location is Username -> Music -> iTunes). Nothing will have changed at all. You can delete (or keep) the new iTunes folder you tested by simply dragging to the trash.

  • Time Machine Folder Sizes

I have calculate folder sizes on but when looking through time machine folders the size is not indicated. Anyone know why?
    Rachael

Time Machine keeps one big backup of your whole drive. Then from there, it stores hourly backups for the past 24 hours plus daily backups for the past month and weekly backups until your drive is full.
iTunes libraries are probably the biggest culprit in rapidly filling Time Machine drives. You can go into Time Machine Options to exclude certain folders to help. But in general, the design of Time Machine is that it will use up all the space you give it. Once your drive is full, it will dump the older data (I believe it will prompt you when that happens).
If you want to limit what Time Machine can use, you may want to partition your external drive using Disk Utility. That will basically 'block off' a section of the disk drive to use for Time Machine, leaving the rest available for whatever you want. Be careful, though - while partitioning a drive isn't that difficult to do (especially under Leopard), making a mistake could cause you to lose the data on the drive you're working on.

  • Itunes GB Size

I upgraded from a version 6 Itunes to Itunes 7.5. I have a 20GB ipod and 4824 songs. The GB size in the Itunes library prior to the upgrade was approx. 18 GB. After the upgrade, the same amount of songs is listed as approx. 55GB. Is there a way to compress back down? As it is, I assume if I try to sync I would lose a good portion of music?

I resolved the issue. I had to re-create my itunes library. File size is back to 18GB
How to re-create your iTunes Library
Learn how to re-create your iTunes library and playlists.
    Re-creating the iTunes Library file
    Follow these steps:
    Quit iTunes.
    Locate your iTunes folder.
For Mac OS X the iTunes folder is stored in one of the following locations:
    /Users/username/Music
For Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 the iTunes folder is stored in
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
For Microsoft Windows Vista the iTunes folder is stored in
    \Users\username\Music\
    Open your iTunes folder.
Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml to the Desktop
Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
Mac OS X: "iTunes Library" (in versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 this was called "iTunes 4 Music Library").
Microsoft Windows: "iTunes Library.itl" (in versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 this was called "iTunes 4 Music Library.itl")
    Open iTunes.
From the File menu, choose Import.
Tip: Do not add any music into iTunes at this point.
Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop.
    Mac users: Click Choose.
    Windows users: Click Open.
After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes (Apple TV, iPod, etc) will see your iTunes library as a new library and will completely resync."

  • Synchronizing iTunes folder

I like using the rsync-based Unison programme to synchronize my iTunes libraries across several computers. My question is: which files should I exempt from synchronizing?
I'm asking, because I just want to synchronize the media (music, apps, etc) and my playlists, but not anything peculiar to the running of iTunes on one of those computers (like remembered window size, display size etc).
My iTunes folder has three sub-folders (iTunes Music, Previous iTunes Libraries, Album Artwork) and five files (iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Library.xml, and sentinel)...
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

You should sync \Music\iTunes\ folder and all contents.
but not anything peculiar to the running of iTunes on one of those computers (like remembered window size, display size etc).
None of that is in the folder above. It's just the music, playlists, artwork, etc.

  • Itunes folder got put in trash and dumped....

So now I've created a new library but how do I get it to work [ I have a new blank itunes .. that when I open ITunes preferences> advanced, shows me the library still resides on my external drive just like before I accidently dragged it to the trash ]! I have everything backed up on an external drive. What and how do I drag the old library into the new one I've created on my computer.

I had this tiny version of "Itunes music"
Depends what this was. If it was your iTunes folder (not iTunes Music folder) and you were running the LIBRARY (not the music) from your Mac, then you trashed your library but not your music.
I could have deleted the music in Itunes music but instead I got rid of all of it
    Sorry, you lost me.
Some time back I must have changed the location of the library in Itunes preferences to reside in my Macs HD, which created Itunes>Itunes music that I mistakely dumped
No, you are mixing up your MUSIC (folder) and your LIBRARY - the one contains all your music files, the other contains all your playlists etc. You mean - I think - that you changed the location of your MUSIC folder back from the eHD to your Mac, which means any music you added after that will have been on your Mac (the "tiny" folder you found). As for your Library (playlists etc) it depends entirely where this was located - on your Mac or on the eHD?
I downloaded a new version of Itunes from the apple site to get started
You didn't need to do this - the app itself is entirely separate from your music and playlists
there was of course nothing in it
No, this is because you deleted either your Library or your music, not because you downloaded the app (people upgrade to new versions of iTunes all the time, but their Library still opens with everything in it intact).
i have a copy of the library xml siting on my desktop ---- should i trash it??? .
At the moment I have no idea whether you trashed your music, your Library, or both. If the XML file is your Library playlists from before you trashed whatever you trashed, then importing it could restore your playlists. You need to look at its Create Date and decide. Your call. If it is a small file dated from after you "trashed" then it's no good to you, and you could trash it.
I dragged the Itunes folder in "MUSIC" on the eHD to the new open and blank Itunes on my Mac, and the song titles started to immediately transfer to Itunes
You mean the "iTunes Music folder"? If so then yes, this will re-add all your music, but not your playlists.
when I go to my computers users>home little house>music.... i see a folder with a music note on it, and underneath it has , name, kind ,and size, and when created. BUT under size it just has -- and that's it
No problem. Folders in Finder List view show up with -- for Size. You would have to do a Command-I Get Info to see its size.
This music folder on my Macs users>music> "blue music folder with note on it",looks exactly the same as before I did all the above and got Itunes working. It looks kind of empty!! Should that be how it looks?
Is it really empty? Look, check, and see. But if Preferences are still pointing to your eHD as you say, then all you've done is add the music on your eHD to your iTunes Library on the Mac - without actually importing the music. What you have done is simply rebuild your Library. What I don't know is where your iTunes Library database file and iTunes Music Library.xml file are.
    What about my playlists?
If you trashed your iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files, then they are gone I'm afraid.

  • Remove old iTunes folder

    Hi there,
I moved my iTunes library a couple of years ago now to an external hard drive and
all works well. The size of the iTunes folder on this external hard drive is 31G
I am having a cleanup of my iMacs internal hard drive and I notice there is still
a iTunes folder there which is about 5G.
It it safe to remove the iTunes folder from the internal hard drive??  Why is it still
    there???

Read the above links (sorry about the formatting but Apple's recent site software update is a mess and broke the way dragging formatted text works and I refuse to hand format every single post).  They tell you what a complete iTunes library is.
Make sure you have a complete library with all necessary files on the external drive.  Some people confuse moving only media with moving a library (not helped by hundreds of web sites and instructional videos doing the same).   If you have everything on the external drive you can delete the library on the internal drive (make a backup first, just in case).  If you moved only media then the library files on the internal drive are active and important.  You may still have old media on the drive.
One thing to observe is items do no get deleted unless you delete them.  "Moving" between drives is not the same as moving inside a drive. Moving between drives is only copying with you having to do the delete.
