Itune's & Seagate External Hard Drive

I just FINALLY figured out how to get my songs on my new laptop. I was able to transfer the songs from my external hard drive to my laptop hard drive. When I disconnect the external hard drive, I am not able to play the songs b/c for some reason its not linking to my laptop hard drive. I did check my itunes preferences and looked under advanced and it does link it to my C drive. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks.

I was able to transfer the songs from my external hard drive to my laptop hard drive.
You simply copied them to the iTunes music folder, didn’t you? Putting them into this folder does not tell iTunes they are there.
In order for iTunes to see and use them, you have to menu File -> Add file/folder to iTunes.
Do this.
Connect your external hard drive.
Open iTunes prefs -> Advanced and make sure iTunes is pointing the correct spot.
Turn on Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library and Keep iTunes Music folder organized.
Select OK and then menu Advanced -> Consolidate library.
This will copy all the songs from where they are into the iTunes music folder.
Now you need to search your hard drive and make sure you do not have duplicates in the iTunes Music folder.

  • How do I get my iTunes music to play once I have moved it to my Seagate external hard drive

I had all of my iTunes stuff on my desktops internal hard drive and it was really slowing it down.  So this morning I organized my media folder like apple support said too and then I changed the media folder location to my Seagate external hard drive.  Now when I bring up my iTunes library it says it "cannot find the original and asks if I would like to locate it.  I have been through this before.  When I locate the file from my external hard drive to my computer it just puts the file right back into my computer taking up my internal hard drive space.  What do I need to do to play my itunes library from my Seagate external hard drive?  I would also like to be able to sync my Ipod from my external hard drive.  Please Help!!! This thing is driving me Crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there any way I can retry to consolidate them in my external hard drive?
    sure.
preferences > advanced. point iTunes media folder location to the external. on the same tab, ensure that the copy to ... and keep ... organized options are checkmarked. ok out of preferences.
now consolidate your files via library > organize library.
all media files will be copied to the external (except those that are already on it - if any).

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

  • I am trying to backup my Itunes onto my external hard drive. I am at the step where I on Itunes, click on File - Library - Organize library. I am suppose to check mark both boxes there, It won't allow me to check mark the second box, why? How to fix this.

I am trying to backup my Itunes onto my external hard drive. I am at the step where I on Itunes, click on File ->Library ->Organize library. I am suppose to check mark both boxes there, the first being "Consolidate Files" & the second being "Reorganize files in the folder 'Itunes Media'. I am able to checkmark the first box but It won't allow me to check mark the second box, why? How can i fix this? Please help!

Well you must have made a mistake somewhere. The last instruction of step four reads:
When you've found your iTunes library folder, drag that folder to your external hard drive. This will begin the iTunes backup. The amount of time the backup will take depends on the size of your library. When the transfer is done, your backup is complete and your external hard drive can be disconnected.
Normally dragging content from to a new location on a different drive will result in a copy action which is what you were supposed to do. At a guess you somehow managed to move the iTunes folder. Then when you started iTunes it created a new blank library for you assuming it had just been installed rather that raising a warning.
Close iTunes. Rename the iTunes folder on the internal drive as iTunes (Empty) then copy the iTunes folder from the external back into the User's Music folder. Start iTunes. All should be well.
When you've made sure it all works please read my User Tip and use that method to backup in future. Since you already have a folder with the backup in place you can skip the "Make New" operation in the fourth step and simply choose the external folder.

  • How do I back up my itunes to an external hard drive and restore from same if necessary

How do I back up my entire itunes to an external hard drive and restore from same if necessary.
    Thanks

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

  • How do I use a seagate external hard drive with airport extreme?

I have a 1tb Seagate external hard drive and I connected it to the USB port at the back of my Airport Extreme. I opened Airport Utility and am now lost. How do I access the hard drive?
(I have a Macbook Pro running os x version 10.8.2)

The external hard drive must be formatted either in Apple's HFS+ or in Microsofts FAT32 in order for it to be recognized. You can format the drive by connecting it to your Mac and bringing up "Disk Utility".

  • I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
    There is more info here.

  • ITunes Library to External Hard Drive...and iTunes Match???

So, my iTunes library is getting too large for my computer's storage capacity. I'm thinking of moving some of my library to an external, USB hard drive. However, I've never done iTunes through an external hard drive before and I have some questions.
Can I copy new discs (import) straight onto the external hard drive? Or do they need to go onto my computer first then get transferred to the hard drive?
Can I still use iTunes Match and pull songs from the library on my hard drive and from the main computer?
To partition a library between a computer and an external hard drive, do I need to activate sharing or anything special? Or will the computer/main iTunes library just consider the external drive to be a different location for some of the tracks?
How would I backup the external hard drive? Would Time Machine (running off a separate hard drive) back up another external hard drive if they were both plugged in?
Can you burn the entire library to data discs anymore? Or do you need to make a playlist of your entire library? If the latter, is there a way to turn off the message about iTunes in the Cloud playlists only accepting songs matched or uploaded? I have some songs that erroneously did not get matched or uploaded. If I try to put them in a playlist and burn it to a data disc for backup, iTunes won't do it.
    Please help!

I recommend you keep everything inside the iTunes folder.
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from internal to external.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
This is all you need to do. Everything will work normally.
You can delete now /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal.

  • How do I find outlook email on an Seagate external hard drive?

    Hi -
I have a Seagate external hard drive that I used to back up an old mac book pro.  I have found all my documents and was able to transfer them all to a mac  mini.  However I can not find the email files.  I had outlook and am trying to find the emails that were backed up on the external hard drive.  How can I find them?
    thank you!

If it is anything like Entourage was before it, it is in the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder. Sadly with Entourage, there was a single Database file that managed contacts, e-mail and calendar in one file.  This all your eggs in one basket approach led me to stop using Microsoft's solution.  Hopefully Outlook was made less risky.

  • I had to reformat my computer and put my Itunes on an external hard drive.  Once I fixed my computer and put Itunes back I can't itunes to open on my PC.  I see it but it appears locked now.

I reformed my PC and placed my Itunes on a external hard drive.  I have moved them back to the PC but can not open.  How are i get my Itunes working I can see them in my files but they are locked.

I'm sure when it was taken to reformat, he just put everything from my computer onto the external.  I know he did't save them to any back up disc's.  When he moved everything back is when I lost my Itunes library and it only shows as that XML.  I do have an old back up I can restore most.
Any way to import from my touch what is on it, I have not connected it to my PC since.
I did get all my music purchased on, but under purchased I can't find my movies.
    Thank you!!

If it doesn't light up it is dead.. return if under warranty.. the power supply is probably gone, but the hdd could be dead.. Seagate have had some bad batches of these things.
