ITunes 10.2.1 update causing excessive usbmuxd warnings
Updated to iTunes 10.2.1(1) this morning and weird usbmuxd behavior started immediately.
Here is Console's last reference to usbmuxd a minute before I started installing the update.
Mar 10 08:36:26 Mac-Pro com.apple.usbmuxd[60]: usbmuxd-207 built for iTunesTenOne on Oct 19 2010 at 13:50:35, running 64 bit
Towards the end of the update process the Install log shows iTunesHelper was launched
Mar 10 08:38:53 Mac-Pro _spotlight[374]: Begin script: runiTunesHelper
and at that same time Console reported
Mar 10 08:38:53 Mac-Pro com.apple.usbmuxd[358]: usbmuxd-211 built on Jan 13 2011 at 04:20:21 on Jan 13 2011 at 04:20:21, running 64 bit
Since then Console has been reporting excessive usbmuxd warnings.
When I connect an iPhone 4 to the Mac Pro, without iTunes running, it puts this warning in Console

Apparently there are two variations of usbmuxd-211 running. One of them is ~ 50 seconds older than the other.
I'm inclined to believe this is a problem coughed up by my system rather than a widespread glitch in this latest version of iTunes -- I haven't seen an outcry on any forums.
Does anybody know
a) What is HandleUSBMuxDictionary?
b) How do I get it (or its cache, or whatever) refreshed so that it uses the newer build of usbmuxd?
I tried Safe Boot to recreate dyld cache, delete/reinstall iTunes and associated files per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224 , eliminate iTunesHelper from login startup, run DiskWarrior.
Anyone else with this problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Same as you, when I have no iOS device attached and launch iTunes the following warning appears once in Console
3/22/11 2:05:04 PM com.apple.usbmuxd[86529] Warning HandleUSBMuxDictionary client 0x103000780-iTunes/com.apple.iTunes using library usbmuxd-211 built on Jan 13 2011 at 04:19:31, running usbmuxd-211 built on Jan 13 2011 at 04:20:21
Additional warnings only appear while a device is connected or synced.
However, I am using a Magic Mouse and launching iTunes has not caused the loss of tracking you have described. While your problem might be an expression of the iTunes+usbmuxd issue, it might very well be something else altogether.
Have you made the Magic Mouse a "favorite"? Sometimes that can improve how the system and mouse reconnect if signal is interrupted. Look in
System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Apple Wireless Mouse
If it is not a favorite, click the gear menu and make it a favorite. You might have to select "Show More Info" first in order to see the info or make the selection.
Another thing to do while you are in the Bluetooth preferences for the mouse --- use the gear menu to "Update Device Services".
After doing those two things, then launch iTunes and see of the problem persists.
If neither of those actions resolves your issue, another thing to do is confirm whether the problem occurs when you have just one monitor attached.
Applying OS X Combo Update (either 10.6.6 or 10.6.7) may resolve the problem. Be sure to have a backup before trying.
Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

IPad iOS 6.1.2 update causing excessive battery drain
I have noticed in other discussions that a number of iPhone users have experienced excessive battery drain after updating to iOS 6.1.2.
I am now experiencing this problem in a big way after updating to iOS 6.1.2 on an iPad 3. Prior to this update, my battery life was very good, dropping to only 70% to 80% at the end of a typical day of use.
After the update, which was said to be to fix a previious Mail Exchange battery drain issue (one that I was not experiencing), my battery was dropping to 30% after a few hours. It was literally like holding a bucket with a hole in the bottom and watching the water drain out.
I noticed that my Usage time and Standby time were identical, even though the ipad had been in sleep mode much of the time. This indicates to me that something about this patch is causing the iPad not to actually sleep when in sleep mode.
The iPhone discussion forums point to a number of possible fixes, including uninstalling all emails and re-installing them all the way to a total erasure and reinstalation of everything. This worked for some, but not for all victims of this problem.
Until Apple recognizes this problem and sends out another update, one less painful solution that worked for me was to change all of my email accounts from Push to Fetch every 15 minutes. This has stopped the problem for me, for now. so I wanted to share this in case anyone else is experiencing similar problems.
If other community members have discovered other short term or long term fixes then please do post here.
Apple, I await an update that will allow me to restore Push functionality, or instructions on what steps will work to properly restore full functionality (what to remove and reinstall etc).Just to confirm that I have the same problem. I updated to iOS6.1.2 on Friday 1 March 2013, I have an iPad2. And Saturday morning my iPad was 0% after having nodded off on a 78% full battery. This has NEVER happened before, and has become a daily occurrence. I have now amended my Mail to fetch and hope it works.

Before I updated my iPod I had all of the songs to an album that I bought on iTunes. After I updated my iPod I only have 5 of those songs from the album. I would like to know how I can get the rest of the songs cause I already paid for the album and I went on my computer and it said that I have to pay for them even though I already paid for the whole album. So what do I do?
Sync with the same computer iTunes that you normally sync with.

My ipod touch 4g just updates today on itunes and the update caused more trouble than good for me. My ipod will no longer show me the battery percentage in the top right hand corner and I am not allowed to drag other applications to the bottom panel. Also my itunes doesn't allow "enable disk use" anymore. Can anyone help? My ipod now says that it's the 4.3.4 version
- Unjailbroken iPod never showed % battery. Just the icon.
- Unjailbroken iPod Touches never had a disk mode.
- What happens when you try to drag a wiggling app to a empty space in the bottom? Does it move and snap back? -
ITunes 11.4 update cause issue with AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
Along with many others iMac users, the iTunes 11.4 update cause a window that informs that the system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.
Am on Snow Leopard and downloaded and installed the update to ITUNES yesterday - Itunes itself installed okay - but I did get the same system extension cannot be used.
I don't have any ethernet devices - so I checked the System/Library folder and the date on the file Is July 13, 2009.
My IPOD (probably now classic because of age) synced okay through USB port, and everything is working fine. As the update was to allow more devices to sync with ITUNES it may be the error message is not correct one.
Seriously - Apple needs to get out of Silicon valley - the message if correct is for techies - not for users who just want the software to update without problems. Lately Apple is preaching to their own choir.
I did send feedback through Itunes to Apple - -- If you are experiencing crashes after this update make sure you send the crash report to apple explaining that it is happening after this install -- also call or schedule a call with apple support -- -
hi, for the last 3 hours i ve been trying to install and update itunes to the lates update....before my itunes would open just like i want it to and ever since i tried updateing to the new software my itunes wont open i get a code 2324....i realy dont want to have to put itunes on a diferent computer....please help on what to do to fix this and get my library back cause it wont open....please desperately need help
Laura BrownThe first step is to try this Microsoft fixit:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
If that doesn't work we will have to try something more complicated. It is a could not open file error message from the installer. -
OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:
OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:
The problem on my Intel Mac mini with external Klipsch speakers (two mid-range/high and a subwoofer) is REAL obvious as the system emits a hum like a Spinal Tap amplifier turned up to #11 when 10.4.10 powers down the audio circuitry
Then, if I play a song in iTunes, it first pops and the hum disappears right before playing.
Quite annoying. I restored the mini from a recent backup to 10.4.9. Problem gone.
I'm glad I test updates on the mini before applying them to my Intel iMac 24. I guess I'll just hide & watch what happens before doing any more updates.
Here's what I sent to Apple tech support:
Guys/Gals (OS X Engineers):
Concerning the Snap, Crackle Pop Audio problem in the 10.4.10 update:
Please. Just do the right thing and fix the audio.
There is no need to power cycle the audio subsystem to save .0005 amps on the laptop line.
And then to make your Mac mini/iMac/other desktop users have to put up with it when using AC power is ridiculous.
Put the audio subsystem back like it was in 10.4.9 and let the laptop battery freaks looking for mini-amp savings get a "work-a-round".

Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:

First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you. -
ITunes 10.6.1 Update install problem
I updated iTunes to 10.6.1 and now iTunes does not open. The agreement screen comes up when you try to open it and once you click "I Agree" you then get a pop up from windows saying the iTunes is not responding and that it needs to be shut down. I have reset the computer twice and tried downloading the update again. The 2nd download took like 1 second so I'm assuming iTunes recognized that the update had already been done.
I know I could uninstall iTunes and start over but I will then loose playlists that are not backed up on other devices. Any tips or ideas. This is the 2nd iTunes update that has caused me problems. This suprises me because Apple always seems to have their poop in a group.
Thanks for any help!!!Solved my own problem. Option-click the green button is now working, even though I tried numerous time before posting with no success!
Also I've just seen the spell check "abc" above, but am wondering why this is no longer automatic?

An application "causes excessive wakeups," then crashes
Description of the problem:
The game "Team Fortress 2" crashes consistently after about a half hour of gameplay. It seems almost random when the crashes occur, but always during gameplay, never in the game menu. Frequently the application will freeze, then close itself after a few seconds. From what I can tell from other people's screens during a multiplayer game, when my application freezes, it will not close itself until my character dies from standing still and exposed. When the game is hosted on a specific map or play area, sometimes the sound will stop and the frames per second rate will lower before before the application freezes.
Console reports frequently state that an element of the program is causing excessive wakeups, then a wave of memory errors for the application occur, and it finally crashes. This has been a problem for about 1 year. I hope that someone here will be able to help me.
Here's some system data and application information:
21.5-inch iMac from mid-2011
OSX 10.9.3 (13D65)
2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor
12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB graphics card
TF2 is a game that runs off of Steam, a game store and community similar to iTunes by Valve Inc. All games bought through Steam must be run with Steam open.
Here's a recent diagnostic report:
In this case, the game crashes in less than 10 minutes. That's what spurred me to finally come here for help. I've been debating it for a couple of weeks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. -
Downloaded itunes 10.5.2. update, now itunes won't open!
I updated my itunes yesterday, after the process was complete my itunes will not open the only message I get is a Windows message that says
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Then another window pops up that suggests I download the newest version of itunes from the Apple website. I do that, I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it from the Apple website, I followed all the problem solutions from the website...nothing. I've uninstalled itunes, bonjur, apple software update, apple application support, apple mobile device support and restarted...nothing. I tried downloading my Windows updates, tried running a virus scan and updating my Mcafee security software...NOTHING IS WORKING. The last thing I tried was the Microsoft Fix It Center, it said there is no problem with the installation of my itunes...
Somebody help please!!!okay so here is what I am doing now...
uninstalled itunes and all apple products
downloaded 10.4 form here... http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=6278
when iTunes loaded and asked if I wanted to update iTunes click "NO"
backing up phone on iOS4 and about to update iPhone 3GS

ITunes freezes randomly when updating 60Gb Video
Had a 40Gb Photo. Now have new 60Gb Video. Have updated iTunes software. Have update iPod software. When I plug in to load songs and pictures, iTunes will randomly freeze up. Have left it as long as 6 hours in case it was working in the background. In force quit,iTunes says 'Not Responding'. Have to hard-remove, as force-quit will not unlock the computer. This is random, it has loaded 18 (out of 4,000), or 256, or 857, or any other number. Does not seem to lock up on any particular song. Have changed setup and tried to load in small numbers, it seems to work for music (though this is not optimum or correct). Won't work with pictures. If it freezes, all the pictures that were previously loaded in small numbers are lost.
Someone suggested removing the preferences, but I can't find out how .
to do this.
Thanks for any help.
17" G4 Powerbook Mac OS X (10.4.6) rocstor 160Gb drive
17" G4 Powerbook Mac OS X (10.4.6) rocstor 160Gb driveI had the same problem back at xmastime and I finally found that a plug-in called "multi plugin" which was installed by "evil lyrics" was causing the itunes crashes. It only crashed when syncing with the ipod. This was when the ipod was new so it was trying to load everything but itunes would crash after 5 or 10 minutes of syncing.
I got rid of it by uninstalling itunes, deleting the itunes program directory that was left behind, and reinstalling itunes. Once I did that everything worked fine. -
My iPad2 will not be restored with iTunes after trying to update to ios8.
My iPad will not update with iOS8 after I chose to update it. Now the screen is frozen with the signal to plug it into iTunes. iTunes says to restore the iPad, which I tried but it didn't go through. I just need to figure out how to get my iPad out of it if it's not going to work. Restarting it doesn't make the screen go away and my services are out of date! Ahh.
Hi mpatevol,
As someone who depends on my iPhone every day, I can understand how frustrating it must be to have an update cause an issue such as this. Let's see if we can get you back up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

HELP!! No problem with Itunes, but can't update or mount nano
I've searched these discussions forever and tried myriad of suggestions and still nothing works. Here's the problem
My nano charges fine and Itunes recognizes it and updates the music fine. My nano plays fine. However, my nano never stays in disk mode. I can change the option and Itunes updates it. I disconnect the nano, reconnect it and it shows up in My Computer for about 30 seconds, and then immediately disappears. I've noticed that it shows up in My Computer only until Itunes recognizes it. As soons Itunes recognizes the nano, it disappears from My Computer. Also, as soon as Itunes recognizes it, it immediately looses the "disk mode" and I have to turn the option back on again.
This causes me to be unable to mount the nano and I can't update or restore the nano using the updater, so I'm still on version 1.1.
I've tried the hard reset of the nano; still the same problem. I've tried using disk management to format or change letters, but it disappears as a drive before I can get it started. I am dumbfounded.
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?????
Nano 2 GB Windows XPWell, your post didn't help but I had an "ah hah" moment and finally got it working. I set the nano in disk mode again, and disconnected, but this time when I reconnected I had the updater program ready to be clicked on and My Computer open. As soon as the nano showed up in My computer, I immediately hit the Updater program and was finally able to get the nano to mount. When it finally mounted, I was able to format the nano from My Computer, and when that was done was able to restore. NOw it works again!

Mac: Flash causes "excessive wakeups" during Adobe Connect meetings
I posted a message that can be found here last November where Flash was causing Adobe Connect meetings to crash every few minutes. Since then, there's a new version of Flash (13.0.0.182) and the school has updated their Adobe Connect platform. However, the problem is still there.
If it's a meeting with 2 or 3 people everything is fine. The issue is only present when in a "class" where there are many people (like 8-15) using webcams at once and the instructor is sharing slides or something. In this situation the meeting window either freezes or restarts every few minutes and upon examining the console log there is a corresponding message stating:
4/15/14 18:57:27.000 kernel[0]: process PluginProcess[1877] caught causing excessive wakeups. Observed wakeups rate (per sec): 172; Maximum permitted wakeups rate (per sec): 150; Observation period: 300 seconds; Task lifetime number of wakeups: 180731
4/15/14 18:57:27.867 ReportCrash[1980]: Invoking spindump for pid=1877 wakeups_rate=172 duration=262 because of excessive wakeups
This happened when using Safari 7.0.2. When using firefox there is a similar message (only "plugin-container" instead of "PluginProcess" causes the excessive wakeups. And with Firefox, the wakeup rate tends to be around 1500, not just 172).
A couple notes:
1) I've already gone into Safari preferences and allowed Flash to "Run Always" and "Run in Unsafe Mode" for the domain.
2) I've already removed the Adobe Connect Add-in to eliminate that as a possible source of the problem. When I examine the Diagnostic Reports in /Library/Logs it's clearly the Flash plugin that's causing the problem, or some interaction between the plugin and the QT Framework, or something. I don't know.
3) I've already contacted Apple and (not surprisingly) they told me it's not their problem and to contact Adobe.
4) Before someone asks - YES my install of Mavericks is a "clean" install.
5) Adobe Connect works fine on a windows machine on the same connection.
6) Troubleshooting steps have included reducing the video resolution, disabling hardware acceleration, deleting the preferences files, clearing cache, clearing local storage from the Flash preferences pane, removing and reinstalling the plugin, etc. etc.
Back when I had Mountain Lion there were problems like this in Safari, and the work-around was to use Firefox or Chrome. Now it appears it just doesn't work, period. Has anyone else run into this and is there a work-around? Thanks.
-AAYep - makes sense, however that box has been unchecked the whole time. Also the same thing happens in Firefox which would seem to eliminate that feature as the culprit.
After researching "excessive wakeups" on other forums it appears there are some similar complaints about PhotoShop, Final Cut, EyeTV, google earth, basically graphics-intensive programs - I can't find any others about Adobe Connect, although the IT folks at the school have told me it's a well-known issue. I suspect it has something to do with the way Flash interacts with the frameworks in Mavericks but I'm just guessing - wondering if anyone else has seen this happen or knows a work-around? -
