Itunes 10.2.2.12 on Vista won't start -- d3d10_1core.dll

Question

For the past few days iTunes won't start.  I launch it, and a few seconds later, Windows tells me "iTunes has stopped working".  In the Windows problem reports, the problem signature is:

From other kb articles, I've tried all of these:
-- Verified that Quicktime works
-- uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and other Apple products (several times)
-- disabled other startup programs
-- disabled Direct3D video acceleration in Quicktime
-- disabled DirectX in quicktime (used Safe mode)

It's complaining about a DirectX 10 file.
Since that's an operating system file, it might be worth trying an sfc scannow, as per the following document:
