Itunes 10.2.2 won't sync my iPhone 4.  Missing files & Mobile Device Service Error

I have had my iphone 4 for only a few months now and all of the sudden my home button stopped working.  After researching it online, several people stated that the fix was to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it again.
I followed the directions on the Apple Support page when I uninstalled Itunes.  It said  I needed to go in and uninstall: Itunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support.  I did all of those following the directions to a T and reinstalled iTunes however it is now saying I have files missing and it's not detecting my iPhone at all.  I get an error that says:  Mobile Device Service has stopped working
I have tried EVERYTHING including changing the Apple Mobile Device settings in my administrative tools.
Itunes now says that it may not work properly because the files I uninstalled are missing.  Why weren't they included in Itunes download when I reinstalled it??
Does anyone have any ideas?  Been working on this for 2 days now and It's really starting to tick me off!  I just wanted my home button to work again and now everything is jacked up.  Grrrrrrr arrrrgggg!
Please HELP!

Looks like I found the fix on my own.  For anyone else that has this issue, this is what I did.
1.  Uninstalled all iTunes/Apple software
2.  Ran a search on my computer (from my start menu) for Itunes and deleted all the files that came up (If you right click on each file that appears, it will tell you where they are saved on your computer)
3.  Ran a search on my computer (from my start menu) for Apple and deleted all files that came up (If you right click on each file that appears, it will tell you where they are saved on your computer)
4.  Restart
5.  I was finding that the issue was with the new version of Itunes (Itunes 10)  so I searched for Itunes 9 and downloaded that version instead.
6.  Once the download was complete, I let itunes update to the Itunes 10 version and it's now fixed.
Works like a champ now!
I tried doing steps 1-4 and installing Itunes 10 about 5 different times but kept getting the same error.  As soon as I dowloaded version 9, it installed with no errors at all.
****Since you deleted all of the files off of your computer, it is importat to right click on your iPhone or iPod when it apears in the itunes library and select the option to have Itunes "Transfer Purchases" before you sync it.  That way all your apps and music will transfer from your phone/ipod to your itunes library and they won't be lost.******

I just updated to the latest version of itunes, n ow when I plug in my iphone, it says it cannot sync because "apple mobile device service is not started"  this never happen before, what do I do??

The Apple Mobile Device Service is a part of sever programs that "help" iTunes on Windows. It may have been disabled in the Microsoft program, msconfig, or using a third party utility, such as CCleaner.
I would suggest trying to find and enable the service. To do so, click on the start button, click "run",  and then type "msconfig" look for the iTunes Helper entry and make sure that it's enabled.
Additionally, there may be another service which you will have to enable. You can type something like "service.msc", (I'm not sure exactly) to see the "Services" control panel and look for it there.
If you can't find either, feel free to post here again.

  • ITunes reports "Apple Mobile Device" service error

After much posting and messing around to find a solution to my service crash issues, I have some advice for others to share.
PROBLEM: If you launch "iTunes" and receive a message indicating that: This i<device> cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started. The iPod/iPhone will not appear, nor will the system allow you to interact with the device.
CAUSE: There is usually another software installation that is "hooking" into the system and causing issues. These are usually in the form of proxy, firewall, anti-virus, and/or remote control programs.
SOLUTION: Use the "Computer Management" MMC (right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage") to track down the issue. Please do the following:
    1) Check the "Services" section. You should see an entry called "Apple Mobile Device". This should be started with a startup value of "Automatic". If the status is "Stopped" (or at least indicates that it is not "Started"), then attempt to start the service. if nothing else, this will tell you if the required binary/executable is located in the correct directory for the service entry. If the service cannot start, or if the service reports that the file is missing, attempt to re-install the "Apple Mobile Device" MSI. Worse case, you may need to uninstall iTunes and re-install.
    2) Try crashing the service again. The usual symptoms of this issue are that the service can be started, and will operate fine until iTunes is loaded, at which point the error message appears regarding the service (not being started). If you check the "services" section at this time, you will likely see that the previously running service is now stopped. Doing this will also create a new set of crash events in teh event log. Take note of the time when you "crash" the service and continue to the next step.
    3) Check the "Event Viewer" section. locate the time of the service crash. The entries should be listed with a red "X" icon. now look at the event. This should tell you what the "Faulting module name" is. If you are using a proxy application or firewall, you may see something like "FPServiceProvider.dll" (Foxyproxy), "MPFP.dll" (McAfee Firewall), or even a generic entry like "ntdll.dll" (The Windows user environment). In every case (except "ntdll.dll") you swhould be able to search the web for the "DLL" or "EXE" name and work out what application is causing the issue. in the case of "ntdll.dll", you'll need to look for software that hooks into your system. Software like "DyKnow" remote control and other remote administration tools.
If you have installed a remote administration, remote control and/or security suite between a working iTunes and one that crashes, you may want to start with removing those as a test. Once I removed our faulty application (and it's hooks into the OS), iTunes funcationality was fully restored.
This is a "for your information" post. Hopefully it will save the trouble I had to go through to fix this problem.

Thank you so much for this. This was the most helpful advice I could found and seems likely to be applicable to many other people. I had the problem of my iPhone suddenly not being recognized by iTunes and I couldn't figure out why. Although I didn't have exactly the same scenario as the OP, (no actual crash, just an error message from iTunes saying device could not be used because Apple Mobile Device Service was not started) I used the info above to localise the conflicting software (proxy software - doh!). After uninstalling that and rebooting everything is good again. Thanks once more.

  • Itunes 10.5.2 won't sync with Iphone 3g (4.2.1)

My iPhone won't sync to with my MacBook running iTunes 10.5.2.  I have an older iPod that syncs fine.  The iPad 2 syncs fine.  But the phone just doesn't show up.  No error message, it just doesn't show up.  The iPhone shows that it's charging so the USB port is good.  Anybody have this problem?

Please look in the "More Like This" box to the right or use the search box at the top of this page.  Your question has been addressed over and over and over again.

  • ITunes 11: Newest podcasts won't sync with iPhone?

I have an iPhone 5 - I abandoned the Podcasts app in favor of just syncing my podcasts through iTunes and listening to them in the Music app.
But since the iTunes update last night, I haven't been able to sync the newest downloads of my podcasts (my settings are to automatically sync unplayed episodes of selected podcasts and delete them from my device once they've been played, upon the next sync.)
I tried the usual re-set, restart of both iTunes and my iPhone. I've even selected a new podcast, and old unplayed episodes of it sync perfectly fine. But there are two or three podcasts that won't sync their newest episodes with my device.
Has anyone else run into this?

I had this issue as well. After trying various things, here's what I did to solve the problem:
    - rebooted both the computer and the iPhone (not sure if this is necessary or not)
    - turned off syncing of the affected podcasts (in iTunes, click on the device, then click the "Podcasts" tab at the top and then in the Podcasts list I unchecked the specific podcasts that were not syncing
    - sync the iPhone (by pressing the Sync button at the bottom right of the iTunes window)
    - turned syncing of the affected podcasts back on
    - sync the iPhone again
    Hope this helps.

  • My iTunes for windows no longer automatically syncs my iPhone when started

I used to be able to do a daily backup of my iPhone by simply plugging into my computer.  iTunes would automatically start and do the sync.  That suddenly stopped under version 10.6.0.40.  The iPhone is recognized and I can manually sync it, just not automatically.  This is iTunes for windows. Any suggestions?

  • Apple Mobile Device Service has stopped working. Vista SP2, iTunes 10.5

Hi there. I've been having an issue syncing my iPhone to iTunes. Here's a description of the problem:
-With an up-to-date Apple Mobile Device Service, error windows constantly pop-up saying that it has stopped working. If I close the error window, another one pops up fifteen seconds later.
-If I plug my iPhone into my computer, it is not recognized in iTunes, because Apple Mobile Device Service is not running.
-This error does not occur on my desktop PC, so I have been able to sync my iPhone by loading all of my files onto a USB and transferring them onto it. However, I would much rather not.
Here are the steps that I have taken:
-Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 10.5 with firewall off
-Individually uninstalled and reinstalled the Apple Mobile Device Service with firewall off
-Stopped and Restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service in Administrative Tools -> Services
-Extensively searched the internet for solutions
-Replaced Apple Mobile Device Service for iTunes 10.5 with Apple Mobile Device Service for iTunes 10.1 (This worked PARTIALLY. The error windows have now stopped popping up altogether, but I cannot sync with iTunes because the Apple Mobile Device Service is out of date. It asks me to update it, I agree, and I get the Apple Mobile Device Service that spawns error windows and still does not allow me to sync my iPhone.)
I am running Windows Vista SP2, and iTunes 10.5. My Internet Security suite is AVG Internet Security 2011. My iPhone is running iOS 5.0.0. Here is a full report of the error:

Just a shot in the dark, but have you downloaded any program from Megaupload, like MegaKey?  If so then that is your problem. I had been having the exact same problem for the past 2 weeks. I couldn't figure out what it was and tried everything that you have.. Then was on a board and someone mentioned Megakey. Having tried everything else, I uninstalled the program and reinstalled the current ITunes and AMDS. My Ipad and Iphone connected with no problem.
