ITunes 10.3.1.55 not recognising iPhone 3gs/iPad 2

Hi I hope someone can help!
I updated to latest iTunes when I purchased iPad 2 and for three days all was fine.  I'm running a 64 bit laptop on Windows 7.  Yesterday the pc ran a windows update and installed some security changes, not sure if this will have been the issue.
When I went to synch either the iPad or the iPhone today, the pc recognises the device bringing up the usual what do you want to do with this, but in iTunes nothing happens for a fair few minutes and then I get the following error message with an exclamation mark:
"iTunes cannot read the contents of the <device name>. Go to the Summary tab in the <device> preferences and click Resore to restore this <device> to factory settings."
I reinstalled iTunes and it seemed like the problem was solved and I managed to get iPad 2 synched however iTunes froze while in the back up stage of synching the iPhone 3 gs and I had to close it down from the windows task master.
Now my iPone 3gs won't work due to the failed synch and when I try to do the system restore it gets so far and then brings up the critical message error:
"The iPhone could not be restored.  An unknown error occured (6)."  I was able to restore the iPhone to factory settings on another machine, but then unable to restore from back up when back on the laptop.
I've checked that I have the latest Apple Mobile Drivers and have uninstalled and reinstalled just to be sure.
I'm running the AVG Free Anti Virus and Zone Alarm Firewall.  I've checked the Zone Alarm Programs and ensured that iTunes is ticked for access to everything.
I'm stumped and my phone doesn't work.
Please help!
Thanks
Wealie

Don't reset your phone.  Resetting will return the phone to factory settings and you will loose everything.  Spend some time working toward a fix.
You might want to try a different USB cable.  It is possible that your cable conincedentally went bad.  I have had this problem before - even cables that will chrage the phone sometimes stop working for data purposes.

Check first if your iTunes is up-to-date. If it's updated, try using a different cable or try plugging it to a different USB port.

  • ITunes not recognising iPhone or iPad since upgrading to OS 10.8.2 and iOS 6

Just upgraded to OS 10.8.2, and iOS 6 on iPhone and iPad. Now both these devises are not recognised in iTunes ( no Devices listed ). I have followed the suggested options with no success.
    Anyone else had this problem?

Yes I have similar problem. It initially recognised my iPhone 5 but wont restore from back, so reinstalled itunes which resloved the restore from backup issue. Now, no devices listed like yours.

  • I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?

I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?
Also, when I tried to Restore the settings, an Error Message pops up that says " The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. The requested resource was not found.
I'm trying to free up space on my phone by removing [literally] thousands of old photos which were originally synched to the phone, because I had forgotten to uncheck the photos button when I synched it ages ago.
I have also tried synching it on my 24" iMac (running OSX Snow Leopard). But again, when I try restoring the phone through itunes, it says the file is corrupted. It sggests unplugging the device, and then plugging it in again. I have done this numerous times with no success.
I'm guessing it must be because my phone (and versions of iTunes, and OSX) are all too old.
    Please can anybody help.
    Cheers,
    Dan_nz.

    Hi Mario,,,,
I tried everything in your reply,,, thank you again,, I had done that once before and all was working great,,
I have just now tried the Reinstall via iTunes, about 20 into the download, the iTunes logo on the phone disappeared, and the Apple Logo appeared again,,, I waited until the iTunes stated that the download had finished, and the install was in progress,,,
Nothing happened, still the Apple Logo was visual on the screen, iTunes never recognised the phone which it was on my iTunes account previously,,,
Still just a bunch of lines, maybe 5 or 6 so small writing,, I personally can not read what it is telling me, someone said it reads, incorrect shutdown,,,????????
    Please advise,???
I am now at a loss,,, I really became excited when I saw the iTunes icon after putting the phone into restore,,,???

  • Itunes 10.1.2.17 not recognizing iphone 3g or ipad touch 4 or ipod - BG

I have read this same topic over and over with little solution for me. I have not updated my products in so long as itunes have stopped working since many upgrades ago. I've started and stopped the services, the USB cord is good, restarted my PC, and uninstalled and reinstalled itunes so many times its a sickening. The fact that these products are married to itunes is even more frustrating now. Does anyone know a a good solution how to get itunes 10.1.2.17 to work on a PC properly with the iphone 3g or ipad touch 4 or ipod? With my phone connected to the computer, I ran the itunes diagnostics. It stated "No ipod, Iphone or Ipad found" What da!

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.
