ITunes 10.4 "Network Error" when Airplaying to an Airport Express

When I try selecting my Airport Express as the AirPlay destination in iTunes 10.4, I get the error message:
An error occured while connecting to the AirPlay device "XXXXX". The network connection failed.
I am able to connect to the Airport Express using Airport Utility. I can stream to the Airport Express using my iPhone. Only iTunes has the problem. iTunes can stream to an AppleTV with no problems.
Configuration:
Lion
iTunes 10.4
Airport Express/g with 6.3 firmware (tried wired and wireless configuration)
Main router is an Airport Extreme 1Gb ethernet

Same here. The funny thing is, I also have Airfoil that works fine -- I set the input as System Audio and it plays through the Airport Express just fine, so the "network" is working just fine, it is iTunes that seems to have the problem.

  • ITunes Error when connecting to my Airport Express

    Hi,
I am at home and my internet runs perfectly;  my Airport Express is solid green but I cannot connect to it to stream my music from iTunes. I get the following error:"" There was an unknown error (-15006)  connecting to the AirPlay device “air_express”"  . (Or similar, my OS is in japanese hence the wording may not be exact). air_express is the name I gave to the Airport device.
Sometimes the device is recognized by Airport Utility application and sometimes not. I have very good coverage, (I am almost next to the wireless base station) and the  Airport Express is the same as dead.
I have the latest version of the Airport Utility, I am running 10.5.8 and yes, I did reset the device and once it was recognised by the Airport utility I did a factory reset as well.
Any explanation, since I have now a nice white paperweight.....

Interference, especially in the 2.4 GHz / 802.11g band, can cause all sorts of headaches. The Express appearing and disappearing in AirPort Utility is a symptom of that, or of it being too far away from its wireless access point (which you ruled out already).
Microwave ovens, cordless phones, and wireless stereo speakers are possibilities too.
If your equipment is capable of 5 GHz / 802.11n, using it will mitigate the effects of interference or eliminate it completely. I have found its range to be more sensitive to intervening structures though.
Use iStumbler or something similar to determine if there are a lot of wireless networks in your area. It only takes a few competing wireless networks to cause problems. Changing wireless channels as you suggest may help.
If everyone else would simply use the minimum transmitter power necessary for their needs, interference would be less of a problem. Unfortunately that's not going to happen - it's like asking everyone to keep their voices down in a crowded room.

  • Error when trying to connect Airport Express to Base Station

I came home today and the light was flashing amber on my Express. Tried to re-connect but keep getting this message: "There was an error setting up this wireless device for WDS. Quit Airport Utility and try again." I have, several times and it still won't connect. Got any ideas? My wireless router is the older Apple version flying saucer.
    Thanks....

Have you tried using a WEP password for your wireless network instead of a WPA one? That fixed it for me.

  • An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "Stereo Airport Express G". The network connection failed.

When attempting to play iTunes 11.1.2 music wirelessly from my Mac Mini to stereo speakers connected to an AE "G" I get the following message: An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Stereo Airport Express G”.   However, when I attempt to play internet radio from an iPod Touch wirelessly to the same speakers connected to the same AE "G", it works fine.
Finally, when I swap out the "G" for an AE "N" connected to the same speakers Airplay works fine, both from the Mini and the iPod.
Why would the iPod connection work while the Mini connection not?

I have what sounds like a very similar issue.
I had my Denon 3312ci working perfectly with Airplay from my 2013 iMac running iTunes. Upgraded to iTunes 11.1.3, and now when I attempt to Airplay direct from iTunes to the 3312, it plays for about half a second and then stops. Displayed on the Amp then says "Assigning Network". The amp starts dropping ping packets at this point. About 15-20 seconds later the pings start coming back, but no Airplay.
I tried different network cables, resetting the microprocessor, a different switch, changing between DHCP and static IP. Was about to make a warranty call to Denon, when I thought maybe I should try Airplaying directly from iphone and ipad. Much to my surprise, it worked from those devices.
I prefer to use my iMac to Airplay rather than ipad/iphone as I found I got next to no audio drop outs using it that way (they are both using wired network), where as ipad/iphone occasionally would get a moment of silence in the middle of a song.
My network set up is fine. I can use internet radio and connect to DLNA services fine on the amp. It is just airplay between iTunes 11.1.3 and the amp where the issue lies.
No fixes as yet, but I have logged a support call with Denon Australia to see what they say.

I keep getting a Networking Error: when i run Software update. i have 10.5.8 and want to upgrade to at least 10.6 or later. i know the network is working perfectly.

Snow Leopard OS 10.6 is not available via Software Update, it is paid upgrade.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Network Error when trying to Publish to iWeb

My website was working very well until I made many changes a few weeks ago to my sites on iWeb. Then I had difficulty publishing again until I tried to shut down the program and found it needed to be updated. I updated iWeb and made changes to the website and because it would not let me publish to .Mac I published to a folder. Now, I can no longer publish to .Mac or a folder. I have tried again and agin to publish to iWeb but I continuously receive this Network Error: Publish failed due to a network error. Check your Internet connection and try again.
If anyone can help me that would be great!
    Thanks...CCM in CR

Here's another piece of data on this problem. I have also been experiencing the Network Error when publishing, but only on a dialup connection. And in testing I found that if I removed the images from the site so that it contained only shapes and text, it would publish over dialup successfully. The original site including images publishes instantly on a machine at another location that has a DSL connection.
There doesn't seem to be any problem with line quality on the dialup connection, and the same machine that gets the Network Error on publishing from iWeb can sychronize to a .Mac account and use iDisk to backup images over that connection without any problems.
So these results seem to indicate that iWeb has some parameters around network timeouts that are restrictive depending probably on a combination of factors like size of data objects in the site file, network traffic and connection speed. It would be nice if a detailed transaction log could be generated that would pin down what is happening more precisely.

    Wireless Configurations
Ensure the default (linksys) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios for dual band routers. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try Mixed mode, single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or Mixed on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2 Only.
Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html to find out. Use v3. How many?

    Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
