ITunes 10.4 on OS X 10.5.8 shuts down immediately after opening

I have a MacBook with OS X 10.5.8.  I had not used it for several weeks, so when I used it again last Monday Aug 1 it downloaded several updates.  After that, iTunes behaved weird:  artwork didn't show up.  Then it just quitted and, when trying to open it again, quits immediately.
I tried downloading it manually, but yesterday Aug 2 I saw a message on http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ saying something was wrong and the download was not available.
Just now (Aug 3) I did download and install iTunes 10.4.  However, I still cannot open iTunes.
Any idea what is wrong?
Please let me know if I'm failing to include any useful information.
Thank you very much in advance for your help!

I can now verify that this also occurs on iTunes 10.4 on OS X 10.6.8.
Why, iTunes, why!?

  • TS1717 iTunes shuts down immediately after opening (Windows 7)

I'm having trouble with iTunes shutting down immediately after opening. I've tried reinstalling iTunes and QuickTime, but I'm still having the same problem. Any suggestions? I have a 64 bit version of Windows 7, and the iTunes installer file has "64" in the name, so I think it's a 64 bit version as well.

Do you get an error message when iTunes shuts down? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

  • Why does iTunes shut down IMMEDIATELY after opening?

I'm running the latest version of iTunes on Windows 7 Home Premium.  Immediately upon opening iTunes (5-10 seconds later) it shuts down and I get an error message that says "iTunes has stopped working."  That's it.  No explanation.  The computer is 2 years old and I've never had this problem before.  It started last week (when I was running a previous version of iTunes), so today I thought I'd upgrade to the latest iTunes and it would solve the problem.  No such luck.
    Any help?  PLEASE...

  • Itunes keeps shutting down immediately upon opening

Can anyone help me?  I've updated all software and uploaded the latest version of iTunes (Beta iTunes 10.3).  It shuts down immediately upon opening.  (It has done this with the last version of iTunes as well)
I thought the original problem was the fact iTuneshelper was open so I located and deleted ituneshelper from "system preferences", "accounts" "login items".
Any other recommendations?  Appreciate any suggestions.

Tried deleting iTunes again and still getting "This operation cannot be completed because the item "iTunesHelper" is in use.

  • ITunes shuts down immediately after start-up, while accessing the iTunes store.  MacBook Air OS 10.6.8

I cannot access iTunes.  It shuts immediately afyer start-up.  I upgraded to 10.5.1andit gets to the point of contacting the iTUnes store when it shuts down.  Any suggestions?

Well before you try unistalling itunes and all that try right clicking on it and running it as administrator. It worked for me.
But in the event you do have to unistall, make sure you consolidate you library first library>organize library>consolidate. Then do all that or you will loose all your playlists, and if you have alot of music on your computer you don't keep in itunes it will be a long process to put everything back in it, or weed out the songs you don't want in there.
Also if you do the second idea make su eyou restart your computer before you open itunes again.

  • ITunes stops responding immediately after opening

My iTunes stops responding immediately after opening and even force-quit doesn't do.
Baically it freezes between pressing it and opening the window. In my large library, I can see that it loads it and then nothing more. The menu appears and then the wheel. Force quitting doesn't shut the program, no matter how I do it. It leaves the arrow and the only way is to restart the computer and start again.
I tried using another account, and it does the same. I tried with a new library. I tried with new prefs folder both on the user and on the Mac HD. I tried reinstalling iTunes. I even tried reinstalling the whole OS X - but nothing. The only thing is that after zapping PRAM it might work once or twice, but no more.
This is with iTunes 7.0.2, QuickTime 7.1.3 and OS 10.4.8
I don't know what else to do.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. It started recently - maybe about two weeks ago - and occasionally when I launch iTunes it just freezes. I can't force quit it completely - it still shows in the Dock as though it's running, though it's not present in Activity Monitor.
Curiously, I've also had a couple of kernel panics when clicking iTunes buttons in the past week. I don't recall any system update that might have affected either iTunes or QuickTime, so I'm stumped... The only way to get iTunes back is to log out or restart.

If you've already tried something like the above then try opening iTunes in safe mode (press and hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases. You may find that iTunes opens normally now.

  • Computer shuts down when I open itunes Store

Computer shuts down when I open itunes Store. I don't know why or how to fix it.. It used to work, now it doesn't. I haven't done anything differently. I tried to 'repair' it in the add/delete programs.

Some more info.................I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime.  No fix.   I can access the store on my other desktop computer which I also updtated to the newest version, so I think it's some setting in my laptop.   As I said, it works great until I click on "iTunes Store" then it shuts the whole program down.

  • My iTunes freezes immediately after opening. How do I fix it?

My iTunes (10.2.2) application freezes immediately after opening. This is after having to check the library. I have left it frozen before for several minutes before force quitting. What should I do?

Have you contacted your card issuer to cancel that card and changed your iTunes account password ? You can contact iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • My iTunes wont close and is preventing my laptop from shutting down

I plugged out my iPod touch when iTunes was asking me whether I wanted an update or not, and now iTunes wont close and has frozen, preventing my laptop from shutting down. I have intel Celeron inside and Windows 7.

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

  • Itunes insn't launching and is preventing my laptop shutting down

OK, so apologies if this question has already popped up in the forums but I tried searching for a thread about the same problem and I couldn't find one.
Recently, out of the blue, my itunes wouldn't open. There was no error message, it just wasn't responding. At the same time, my laptop bagan to refuse to shut down or restart manually. I'm guessing the problems were linked somehow as all other programs are working fine.
So I uninstalled itunes and installed the latest version and horrah! it worked and my laptop would restart ok. But then the next day when I turned on my laptop the same problem started again.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi c,
I don't know how "just" just is, but if it's really within hours or a small number of days, I would still contact Apple. They are under no obligation at this point, but they have in the past made exceptions in some cases where a warranty has just expired. And, even if they don't fix under warranty, you'll still get a free "genius" bar appointment which may resolve the issue anyway.
In addition, run Apple Hardware Test and see if it identifies a bad sensor (my suspicion). If it doesn't, that's yet another reason to go "genius" as they have more thorough diagnostics.

  • ITunes shuts down randomly after 3.2.1 update

Among other problems after updating to 3.2.1 yesterday, now my iTunes keeps shutting itself down. It will show a "Updating Library--this may take a few minutes" message and then will shut down. Sometimes it will let me play a few songs and then shut down.
I am really ready to restore my iPad to factory settings to verify if it's the update or the device that is at fault. Before I do that I thought I'd post it here.
    Thanks.

Once my iPad iTunes library updated it seemed to be ok. Stay tuned...

I just updated to the newest version of iTunes for Windows.  I also just updated to Windows 8.1.   When I open iTunes, it works great until I open the store.   I get an error message that says "iTunes has stopped working" and itunes shuts down.  Any help would be appreciated

  • MacBook pro won't shut down only after sync with iTunes?

MacBook pro stays on blue screen with spinning gear when I try to shut down only if I have synced either an iPhone or iPad with iTunes. If i have not synced with iTunes the shut is ok.
Any suggestions would be great :)

I had the same problem and just fixed it.
    What I did:
    - Launch Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Verify Disk
Let the Verify run until it's done
    - If you are seeing any error try the Repair disk
It's possible you need to restart (holding cmd+r while restarting)
    - Next I did a verify disk permissions and a repair disk permissions
    - reboot
After this the shutdown issue was gone!
Hope this solves your problem as well.
