Itunes 10.4 - Smartlist & interlacing critierias
Hi,
I miss the 3rd button (the one with dots :-) in the smartlist window for interlacing the different criterias after installing Lion and iTunes 10.4????
I installed iTunes 10.4 64-bit on a pc with windows 7 and it doesn't creates the same bug(?).
Has anyone the same problem? Is it a bug or just a reduced feature in the new version?
Thanx and greetings
Yep, great. It's the option key. Thank you very much.
I read something about this isue but couldn't imagine and (as a former windows user :-) didn't know where and what the option key is (sorry).
The next question will follow because I have another "bug".

ITunes hangs with smartlist referring to removed list
First of all great job for the performance improvement. Thank you.
Here is another problem hope you will address too:
If there is a smartlist referring to another list that is later on removed, iTunes starts to hang.
It will eventually respond but just take unnecessary long to. It'd do so for every click until the void reference is resovled. That is, it's a pain to wait for it to respond in order to fix the void references. You have to wait so long that even post a problem on the discussion forum barely kill a little of the time even after I preview the posting for so many times.
It's not some obscured situation. When we manage the smartlists, it's not apparent to keep track of what refers to what with just the layout.Usually these issues can be resolved with updates, in this case updates from www.hp.com and a firmware/software update from sony.com
I went to HP and theres 3 "Flavors" of your laptop some have updates for the chipset/BIOS/ and USB bridge, one even has a update that directly addresses iTUnes when you do a restore on the lap. you will have to go there to find the updates for your exact model (6620DK, 6620SE, 6620TC is the 3 I seen)
Another thing you can do is make sure the laptop is plugged into its AC adapter so you know its not a power issue where the CPU is going into a "Poersaving" mode and then trying to do all this heavy work while unplugged and running on a battery -
HT1657 Problem with Itunes losing rented movies
I continually rent movies to watch airborne on long flights. I'll watch one one day and one the next but, I'm frequently losing the rentals? they just disapear from the menu. I can't find anywhere support for addressing this?
Thanks Prime Minister!
Knowing that iTunes content isn't interlaced made me go back through my Sony TV's formidible and unintuitive settings where i found, buried, a "feature" called "CineMotion" which was turned on. Things appear much more normally now that this is off. (I'd long ago turned off the "motion enhancer" thinking that it might have been the culprit.
Anywho,
THX for your time as it ultimately let me to the right answer!
Cheers,

Calling ex-Windows users - how do you survive on a Mac?
I am curious what recent Mac-converts who have used proper Music Management software on Windows do now? I understand that newbies who have only used the iTunes application (even on Windows) are quite content with iTunes, but what about those who got used to proper music management software such as Media Monkey or WinAmp? I realize that if you only buy stuff from the iTunes store you are again probably fine with iTunes (it seems to be primarily a front-end to the iTunes store), but what do other people do?
Is there any alternative music management software on the Mac? Is SongBird any good?
Do you just spend your time endlessly converting files so that iTunes will read them (losing quality on the way)?
How do you maintain ID3 tagging?
How do you share music freely given the iTunes policing restrictions?
Have you just given up on music while you have a Mac?
Do you run a VirtualMachine with a Windows partition so you can run a Win music manager? This worked well for me for a few months, but the Mac crashed so regularly (every few days) with VMware that it became unworkable
I realize there are a number of external applications that fix some of iTunes major technical shortcomings by enabling syncing to non-Apple devices (at more costs), but the few I've used are pretty flakey (no option to sync to SDcards yet). The lack of video support in iTunes (apart from 1 or 2 basic formats) is forgivable as I just want to manage music. Then there is the interface and functionality shortcomings:
No 'now playing' queue window
No customization of look & feel
No lyrics viewing
Can't export M3U files configurably for Windows
No navigation/management of files on disk (and yes, I do not let iTunes manage the files - as if)
Loss of track data after importing or overwriting (album art a total mess, probably due to lack of ID3 tagging)
Inability to change multiple tracks tags
No flexible/editable get album info queries (only looks at iTunes store)
Lack of add-ons to fix the holes (and I have seen some of the proposed add-ins like Dougs AppleScripts, and am unimpressed)
I could go on and on
The bigger problem is that a Mac doesn't really work unless you use iTunes. It seems all Apple solutions demand iTunes. So, I can't have an iPhone, no iPad, no AppleTV, no FrontRow, no use of music in iMovie or iPhoto, etc. But using iTunes means I lose 20% of my music (non-MP3 files), can't synchronize freely, can't share freely (I have kids with numerous devices), no lyrics, no add-ons with external artist links (youTube, upcoming concerts, etc.) and have a drastically reduced user interface experience (without peronalization options).
It is now almost 1 year since I got my latest Mac. After 6 months of face-palming, the arrival of Microsoft Office 2011 finally meant I could use the Mac at work (finally a working email client that can send more than 1 attachment in MS exchange environments), and there it has stayed. I don't have a massive collection (20,000+ tracks), but the inability to manage music is a show-stopper for home use of a Mac.Your correct for this forum is for using iTunes and other Apple products.
Anyone changing from one platform, especially using proprietary formatted data, is going to have issues when you completely change operating systems. The Mac OS has been a leader in the fact that it includes and supports more international standards than any other OS. At times it may seem like the Mac OS is inflexible, but it is trying to get you to stick to standard, which in many cases you can completely ignore.
Maybe the Mac OS isn't for everyone, especially someone who wishes to have an active role in everything that happens on their system and devices.
Myself, I can't see manually moving songs on my system and on/off my devices. I simply let iTunes playlists and smartlists do that for me, all while making sure I still keep free space on my devices. The recent announcement of the new, and free, iCloud service and it's integration with Lion (10.7) is designed to make syncing and updating even more hands off for users. For me and most of my customers, this is very exciting.
While there are some limitations that you mention that are true, (M3U, ID3 and loss of track data -only because of a non universal fixed standard for this data), most of your complaints are only partially true, if not completely wrong. Without spending an hour replying to all of them, I'll pick one, iCal.
My iCal (and Calendar on my iOS devices) tracks/syncs with 14 different calendars. Of these only 4 are created within iCal (one being ToDo). 4 come from 3rd party applications on my computer. 1 is Birthdays that are automatically imported from my Address Book. 5 are free subscriptions from 3rd parties that include Holiday, Seasonal as well as solar/lunar data, my favorite NHL team schedule and my Facebook Events. I also subscribe to my local Apple Store events as well. At my last workplace we use Google's software for all of our email and scheduling. I used 2 different calendars that we synced within iCal and my iOS devices. That is synced, not subscribed, as I was able to make new appointments and change existing ones from all of my devices just like any other calendar that I have control of.
I suggest you ask for help in what you need in converting in your OS switch, or attend one of the free workshops at an Apple Retail Store, or check out the tutorial videos that are here in the Support section of Apple.com. You don't need to drink any Apple Koolaid, but rather be open to a different way of doing things.
Why does what I say matter? Maybe it doesn't. I'm just a all MacOS/iOS user who switched years ago, but is the person that thousands of MacOS, iOS, Win 95- Win 7, Blackberry and Android users go to for help, with their over 600 systems for close to a decade. Yes, we used MS Exchange servers and send more than 1 attachment at a time as well. -
Hi everyone, just bought a iPhone yeserday, awesome product. However when I uploaded my itunes, my one smartlist which is my top 30 most played songs, loads totally random songs on my iPhone, none of my top songs are in the playlist. I deleted the playlist, made it again. Sync'd. Didn't work
Any suggestions? Everyother playlist seems to be correcthttps://discussions.apple.com/message/16774882#16774882

Some songs don't sync in one smartlist (possible BUG of itunes)
Hi,
I have one smartlist with 200 songs in itunes. After I sync with my iphone and the same smartlist have 190 songs inside the phone.
The files listen ok in itunes and in the iphone (in other lists).
Can be a bug of itunes? Is not the first time that this success me.
Please, help! I don't know what I can do!
Thank you!
PS sorry for my poor english, I'm spanish speker.I checked "Match only checked items" in smartlist and "Sync only checked songs and videos" in iphone menu. However the problem persist.
I discovered what is the problem. The problem arises when you use the "comment" tag in the SmartList. In other SmartList that do not use the "comment" tag this problem does not happen.
One way to fix this is to delete the album and then add it again to itunes:
1) delete the album that gives you problems with SmartList
2) sync iphone
3) add the album again.
4) sync iphone again.
5) Now the SmartList that uses the "comment" tag appear correctly on the smartlist in iphone.
And I insist that the SmartList in itunes always go well, it's just on the phone where don't work anytimes!
Incredible. I hope that apple will solve this bug. Besides, this does not happen with all the albums, only with some albums! So I have to watch each SmartList in iphone that the sync run well.
ahh what a horror! I have hundreds of lists!! I'll go crazy! -

Windows XPHi Matt,
You are not alone. Are you trying to load itunes 7.0.1? I updated to that last weekend and now my ipod has disappeared from my computer and Quicktime won't play. Tech support chat had me uninstall and reinstall about 4 times, no luck. I truly believe Apple has a problem with this version, I see many, many other on these discussion groups with same problem as yours and mine. I called Apple store last night and they told me yes, some are having problems. They told me to bring in my computer! What a joke, but I may just do it so they can see. Good luck, wish I could give you some advise other than it's not your fault! -
I'm unable to SHARE my IMOVE since IDVD is grey and not active, only MEDIA BROWSER and ITUNES. I'm using ITUNES '11.
Hi
A. I don't know
B. I think that THERE ARE A MUCH better choice to do - ! ! !
As Share to Media Browser is OK
(I NEVER use Share to iDVD from within any iMovie versions as the result will be bad to even worse)
Use this and Share as LARGE (Not HD - also degrading result)
Now Close iMovie and Open iDVD and Import movie from Media Browser - This will result in as Good result possibly when movie comes from iMovie'08 or 09 or 11.
If You want even better result then use
• iMovie up to HD6 - or -
• FinalCut any version
So that the material exported over to iDVD is fully interlaced - as DVDs are so and as SD-Video quality is so as Standard. (There are no HD-DVD quality (but academic - very rare and needs special players))
Yours Bengt W -
Last night I tried syncing my 2nd generation iPod Nano like I normally do but I got -48 Error message on iTunes. I tried unplugging and re-plugging my iPod, and once iTunes said my music was synced, all the music in my iPod was erased. I've tried everything, like resting my iPod to factory settings and updating iTunes, but nothing has worked.
iTunes, says that my iPod has music and I can see all the files, but the actual iPod is completely empty. What is wrong with it and how can I fix this?
Thanks!!this is kind of funny. First I read from paper something that Apple is going to break every hacked or some other way touched Iphones to keep their business rolling. Now they did something with the iTunes which eventually broke up our playlist. I fixed this with by deleting my Smart playlists. What I noticed while deleting those was kind of... wierd..
I have all my classic rock etc in the play list named Speed metal. While I was listening WASP (ripped from CD, not bought from itunes - is that what makes you mad, Apple? ) from the normal library I got the error message. So. I though that there must be some broken link between smart list and this song and I deleted the smartlist (Speedmetal).
Wierd part is that I was still listening this song from iTunes Library but when I deleted the smart list it stopped playing the music. That is when I realized that the smart list system is some how affected with this newest update.
After deleting I didn't had to rebuild the library or anything so I still got my Date added and how many times played tags available and also my own genres! Thank god. Because I have all my CD's (~400) on iTunes with own Genres and settings...
Now... Can I update my Tiger to Leopard when it comes out or will it just spit my Samsung DVD drive out of the mac because I didn't get it from Apple Store? -
Can't get iTunes to Autofill from a Smart Playlist
I think the subject line says it all: I can get iTunes to Autofill my 1GB shuffle from a manually created playlist, from the main Library, or from my Purchased Music but if I use a Smart Playlist as the source of the Autofill I get nothing but a blank stare--nothing changes--it doesn't even flinch. What am I missing?
I have restored the shuffle using the 1.1.2 firmware update and it still doesn't work. It has been this way with every version of iTunes I've used since I got the shuffle up until the current version, iTunes 5.0. I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.4.2 with 1.25GB of RAM on a PowerBook G4
Any help would be appreciated.I have practically the same problem, but only with podcasts. From a smartlist having all my podcasts, autofill only puts two onto the shuffle. From a normal playlist, none. I can drag them all into the shuffle. I'm on an iBook with Panther, iTunes 6, September 2005 iPod updater.

ITunes can't find any of my songs now that I upgraded to 7.6
Did the upgrade last night and when I opened it today to play music, all my songs are marked with a "!" and iTunes can't find them. I suspect I may need to reimport them but then I'll have duplicates which I'll need to go through and delete. Is there another way? Thanks.
When you create a smart playlist there is a checkbox so you can select only checked songs. So you could make a playlist easily by matching the rules of date added. If you sort your itunes music folder by date then you can see the start and end dates you will need for the playlist.
Once done, check its all alright, and then edit the smartlist (right-click the name in the left bar) and un-check live updating so it won't automatically change itself if you check/un-check more. -
Crash furing Garageband3 Export to iTunes
I wanted to export a track to itunes from GB3. My itunes resides on external drive. When given the command to do so, GB3 displayed itunes as if it had never run. It cleared my whole list. (The files survived.) I then copied them to the "new " itunes, reset all preferences and smartlists and thought I was fine. But the next time I restarted my imac, all user preferences were lost. It was as if I had turned on the machine for the first time. itunes library (again), Address Book, bookmarks, my Pictures file wont open (says "volume cannot be found"), and worst of all 3 GB3 songs are gone completly. Somehow Home documents were saved. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to ever turning my computer off ever again. Is there a way to retrieve my GB3 tracks? How do I get my Picture file found? Can I reverse Sync with .mac to save Address Book and Bookmarks even though they were not officially backed up but still show up on the .mac site. Can I ever restart my computer again?
Please help!So to answer my own question:
in Eyetv preferences I was creating a folder to record into with the same path as
set destFolder to "MyHDD:Users:entertain:Movies:EyeTVEncoded:"
then EyeTV would create a subfolder in that folder /Users/entertain/Movies/EyeTVEncoded to record into called "EyeTV Archive"
Then in the script I had it set to delete all contents of /Users/entertain/Movies/EyeTVEncoded:
tell application "Finder"
try
delete (every item of folder destFolder)
empty the trash
end try
which caused EyeTV to crash. Because after setting the preferences for the 1st time and recording, overhight the script would delete the destination folder for the recordings.
The solution?
Leave the script as is, and change the recording location to: /Users/entertain/Movies/
Solved. -

Please help!
imac 17 intel dual core Mac OS X (10.4.6) LaCie d2 250GBYou are right. it is a system issue...although I have to stress that the original loss of my itunes library happened as I was attempting to export a track to the itunes library (on an external drive) from Gargeband 3. Is there a "way" to do this beside "export track to itunes?" Did it matter that itunes was on an external drive?

How to create nesting in a smartlist
This is for adding a nested condition to a smartlist in iTunes 11
I have a smartlist that has nesting that looks like this:
Per the help section, it states:
To add another set of rules, hold down Option key & click the Nest button. (When you hold down the Option key, the Add button changes to the Nest button.)
When I do this, I can only create a new nest within the larger nest that you see on the screen. For example, I press Option Key, the Add button becomes a Nest button under Any>Plays>is less than>41. But, I want to creat a "larger" Any nesting that is not nested within the two larger nestings. Does that make sense? Any tips?It is a bit clumsy, isn't it. In your case, I'd start again form the begining and get your nesting structure in place first, then fill in the details.

TV Shows - Interlacing Problems
I've had this problem since before iTunes 7.
Whenever I play TV Shows I purchased off iTunes I see what I believe is called an interlacing problem. For example, when I watch mouths (whatever in the scene moves continuously) in The Avatar I see what I can best describe as horizontal lines that don't line up correctly making part of the moving image looks our of place.
Of course I am using a 21' Widescreen Dell LCD so maybe that has something to do with it. Also I have an ATI 850XL 256MB graphics card. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows why it may be doing this please reply. You have to contact iTunes customer support.
They'll give you a new download or credit your account.
