ITunes 10.5.0.142 does not recognize my iPhone 3GS

My PC is running Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit OS.  My iTunes and iPhone syncing has been flaky since I began using this machine in July, 2011 but was working.  However, now iTunes does not recognize my iPhone at all.  Previously I was able to force a sync by opening iTunes and then plugging in the phone, but now that is no longer working.  The iPhone is recognized by the computer as it does charge, I can see it as a device in Window's Explorer and it asks what I would like to do with the photos / videos.
Here is the latest info on what is installed for each device:
- iTunes:  10.5.0.142
- iPhone:  OS 5.0.1, Firmware 05.16.05
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Feel free to ask further questions as I'm not exactly sure what other information to provide at the present time; I'm pretty much at a loss right now.
Thanks!
John

I am having the same problem. I have a 16Gb iPhone 3GS ios v 4.2.1 with iTunes v 10.5, yet when I connect the phone it tells me there are no updates available. I have 2 iPads, an iMac and a Macbook pro - all of which have upgraded successfully. I thought ios5 was available for the 3GS iPhone. Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi everyone,
my laptop does not recognize my iPhone 3GS as a camera device anymore.
I need to import my photos and videos and don't know how.
The iPhone does charge when I plus it in the USB hub but it does not ask me to import the photos anymore
and it also doesn't show it as a device when I click on the "computer" button where an SD card or an Usb stick would normally be displayed..
I don't know what to do

Thank you, randers4! I now plugged it directly into the ports of my laptop and it's still not recognized.
Does the app Photosync work for more than a thousand photos or will this take me forever?
    Thanks a lot

  • Windows does not recognize my iphone 3gs

Plug in iPhone 3gs. nothing happens.
Plug in iPhone 4..    works perfect.  iTunes. everything.
this 3g is in recovery mode. without a working sim card.

Borrow an older phone for about two weeks.  Use that as your device (have your carrier assign your number to that device temporarily).  Then send in your phone.
Or, get a pay-as-you go phone for a month, and tell your friends, family, coworkers the new temporary number.  Then  you'll have time to send in the device.
Or, ask Apple Support about the Express Replacement option.  They'll overnight you a replacement phone for $29 shipping, with a credit card hold in the amount of the full retail price of your phone (8GB: $375, 16GB: $599, 32GB: $699), which will be released once you send in your original device and they process it through the repair center.

  • Desperate!! :(  iTunes does not recognize my iPhone 3GS

I just bought a new iPhone 4S, and the plan was for my husband to take over my old 3GS.  We had the phones switched and activated at our local AT&T Store yesterday afternoon.  (The AT&T sales person had the SIM cards changed in our phones.)  I was told to go synch my old phone with the iTunes on my laptop before switching the phone info there.  That's exactly what I did and that's how my woe began.  I hadn't synched my phone for quite some time and there was a notification for a new OS.  The OS was downloaded to my laptop with no issue.  I connected my 3GS and first the iTunes on my laptop
recognized the device (3GS) and began the synching process. The first step was to download the new OS to my 3GS.  That's exactly when the trouble started.  I kept getting the same message that there was no driver for the device.  I did a search on iTunes support, etc. and did exactly what I was recommended to do (computer>properties>manage drivers>check if the driver was there...)  The driver was there, however, it did nothing. I tried to upgrade the hardware on the driver, but it didn't work, either.  Finally, I followed someone's suggestion on the internet and deleted the driver which was inside windows system 32.  Before deleting it I had it saved into a different folder, for just in case.  Then I tried to reinstall the same driver to the same location, but it will no longer show up in the same spot... now I have no driver (it wasn't functionning before any way), and my phone is in the permanent "recovery" mode screen (but I cannot even get the phone functioning).  It seems the only solution now is to completely wipe out all Apple related programs from my laptop and reinstall iTunes.  However, I also own an old iPod Video 64GB which has TONS of movies and music in it, and I am very very worried that wiping out all Apple out of my laptop might cause a great loss of all my movies and music, which weren't purchase through iTunes store.  What should I do?  Are there any other solutions to this?  Naturally, I havent' been able to synch my new phone with my iTunes to get my pictures, etc. downloaded (which could be also lost, right? ) and my poor husband has no cell phone because of my mistake (shouldn't have downloaded the new OS after all! )  Can anybody out there help us?  I am so desperate and sleep-deprived now (in addition to having my carpal tunnel aggravated on my right hand due to the numerous hours I spent on my laptop!)  I am beginning to really hate the Apple OS and their way of doing business, because the OS has to upgrade so often and everytime when there is an upgrade, old device users have to suffer loss either big or small.
    Please HEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!

I have already tried that a dozen times.  Did also reset Apple Support on control panel.  It is just stuck and plain "ruined".  I am so frustrated I am this close to returning my iPhone 4S and get a metro PCS!  I have an impression there is some code/bug issue with the new OS upgrade that doesn't match with 3G/3GS.  I guess Apple OS developers don't care about how the "lowly" consumers -- those who cannot afford to buy every single new model they roll out --  might feel about their "upgrades"...  I understand you're a Jobs fan (from your user ID), but this is not the first time I see this kind of so-called-upgrade crashes otherwise perfectly well-functioning older machines.  (There are obviously plenty of 3G/3GS users experiencing this kind of problem) If this is Apple's marketing strategy to force frustrated conumers to go out and buy a newer model, I am completely turned off by Apple.  It's not that I'm in love with Android or Windows.  iPhone is a good product.  But it's the Apple's technical service/back up for regular joes out there -- not techies/engineers -- who cannot afford every single model upgrade that really irritates me.

  • Itunes on my Mac 10.4.11 does not recognize my iphone

itunes on my Mac 10.4.11 does not recognize my iphone 4S
also, once I plug in my iphone, it is recognized as a camera, but nothing to do with music.
if i have to upgrade software, how do i do that?

You get Mac OS X 10.5 on DVD if you have a PowerPC G4 or G5 Mac, or Mac OS X 10.6 on DVD if you have an Intel Mac. If you're using a G3 Mac, you need a newer computer.

  • Windows does not recognize my iphone name, but itunes does

This is a reqpost of another forum on diff site, but is the exact same problem i have~
After the IOS5 update~  and and updating two phones on same computer~
I have windows 7 x64bit, and the problem is it does not recognize my iPhone's name anymore.. in itunes it shows the correct name but when ever i look at My Computer listed under portable devices the name is wrong instead of being Louie's iPhone it shows Kim's iPhone (My Fiancees iPhone).. i can still access it and get my pictures and stuff but the name of the device is just wrong.. so im hoping you guys know how to solve this problem.. this only started happening when i installed iOS 5...
    so to sum it up..
    iTunes... Louie's iPhone
    Windows... Kim's iPhone
here are the things I already did but did not work...
... uninstalled everything apple, rebooted and reinstalled.
... restored my iPhone as new 3x and still nothing....
I am at a lost here.. so please help me guys? i know you can solve this coz sinful has never failed me before

In Windows 7, it is not possible to change the name by right-clicking and selecting properties! It doesn't work...
The only solution that worked was to search the registry for the incorrect name and adjust it by hand, which strikes me as a pretty ****** solution! Better would be that the Apple USB driver would just use a neutral name like "iPhone". Which makes me wonder what would happen if two iPhones are connected at the same time: how can they be told apart in the "Computer" application?

  • HT1199 I have a desktop mac operating on Mac OSx 10.4.11 and the system does not recognize my iphone and I am unable to upgrade to the newest itunes version. What do I need to do?

I have a desktop mac operating on Mac OSx 10.4.11 and the system does not recognize my iphone and I am unable to upgrade to the newest itunes version. What do I need to do?

    Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
    Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
    During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.
    OS numbers and names
    OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
    OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
    OS X 10.7.x - Lion
    OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion
    More about Macs
The Apple History site has specifications for every Mac ever produced: http://www.apple-history.com/
    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
    Upgrade beyond Snow Leopard
Information about upgrading Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A
    Important
Check that your Mac complies with any requirements. If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of Apple pages.
