ITunes 10.5.1.42 Bug - Repeated Update Carrier Settings Prompts on syncing with iTunes

iPhone Version: 4
iOS: 5.0.1
iTunes: 10.5.1.42
Operating System: Windows XP
Location: Australia
Phone Carrier: Virgin Mobile http://www.virginmobile.com.au
Problem:
On syncing iPhone 4 with iTunes 10.5.1.42, the message "An update to the carrier settings for your iPhone is available. Would you like to install it now?" appears, EVEN AFTER it was successfully installed previously.
It seems to affect Virgin Mobile (Australia) customers only.
Replicable: Yes
Click on "Check for Updates" via "About" on iTunes, you will get the same message again.

  • After updating carrier settings i cannot sync music

i was told to update my carrier settings today and after doing so i now am told to erase all my songs in my iphone because it's sync with another computer. i only have been using this computer. it's rediculous to erase 50G of songs and reinstall them.
    what do i do?

I have the same problem: sounds muted for all apps, alerts (except the phone ring). It seems to be an intermittent software (iOS 6) problem (other threads suggest the software fault might be related to managing the docking connection state).  Mine also has some weird link to the docking connection.
After multiple reboots, "Reset All Settings" and ear-buds in/out didn't work, I was going to resort to a complete wipe.  My work iPhone 4S isn't associated with my home PC / iTunes, so I went to do a manual back-up of photos to my PC - but no photos were visible on the PC (using Windows Explorer). The windows transfer app also alerted me that there were no photos (even thoough there were 200+ on the phone).  I took a new photo and tried again and there were all the old photos.  Also, sounds were back, plus the hardware volume control buttons were working again.
However - disconnecting and rebooting and the controls/sounds go away again after entering my passcode .
Plugging back into an non-iTunes PC seems to bring them back... Very frustrating.

  • 'update carrier settings' after iTunes update

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the iPhone or iTunes, but after the recent iTunes update, there is a prompt "Update carrier settings" which always pops out even though I already installed it and sync'ed my phone.

This is being discussed at Apple Support Communities -- iTunes 10.5.1.42 Bug - Repeated Update Carrier Settings Prompts on syncing with iTunes and on Whirlpool. It seems it particularly relates to Optus and Virgin Mobile. There is no fix yet.

  • What does "update carrier settings" Mean?  Settings for what?

What does "update carrier settings" Mean?  Settings for what?

It means just what it says. Carrier settings are the settings the carrier installs on the phone to connect it properly to their network. Periodically, carriers push updates to those settings. You should accept them.

  • HT201270 What's the benefit of updating carrier settings?

I received a notification to update carrier settings on my iPhone 5. But I am not able to find the benefits of updating my iOS with this new update.

Carrier updates are sometimes issued to reslove issues the phone may be experiencing. Why don't you contact your carrier and ask what this update is all about.

  • Update carrier settings

I synced my phone over the weekend and got a message about "update carrier settings" which I believe relates to cell service interface.
Searching the forum here, there seems to be a number of posts about this starting early Feb on the East coast, and including Australia and parts of Europe; none seemed to have any concrete resolution. Some posts say performance is much worse after, some say much better. I'm in Southern California, could be something AT&T didn't roll out there till recently?
Since updating mine, I get "No Service" in places where things used to be fine, like my home, and side by side with my AT&T 3G Blackberry (from my employer - I wouldn't choose that beast) the iPhone may show 2-3 bars less signal than the crack-berry. Not scientific, I know, but if the 'berry only has 2, the iPhone is dead in the water.
Anyone else in SoCal seeing this? Any tips on what to do about my perceived problem?
    Thanks!

Well, pragmatically, the update correlated to service problems, but after 2 hard resets, phone service seems to be back to its usual well-behaved self, if not even better than before. Could be coincidence, could be the installer didn't clean up after itself, but all is good now.
Thanks for the link to the kb article.

  • Should I update my older phone and sync with ios 5 prior to doing a restore?

Should I update my older phone and sync with the new ios 5 prior to doing a restore to my new iPhone 5?  Is that necessary?

Well...the answer is no.  You can't downgrade the iOS, but it will update.  I just kept the backup from the older version and did a restore with the Iphone 4S and it worked fine.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Updated Carrier Settings - All 3rd party apps now crash on startup.

Updated the new Carrier Settings today. Now all 3rd party apps on the iPhone crash on startup. Am I the only one experiencing this?
    Rebooted several times
    Running 3.1 (7C144)
    Thanks!

Just wanted to post in the event someone else had the same issue. I did a restore and reset. All third party apps went away (poof).
I had to manually re-install my apps from the app-store. Thank goodness iTunes tracks your previous purchases.

  • HT201270 Why do I get a message about updating carrier settings on my iPad every day?

I get this message every day. How can it need to update the settings every single day? It is weird. Ive been getting this for 2 weeks now.

    lukeoatham wrote:
I am still getting the carrier message so the O2 Guru didn't make any difference.
    Thanks.
Well I've been on to Apple Support again and they say that since I did a factory restore I'd have a virgin copy of the iOS so it can't be a problem with that. I asked about there being a bug in the iOS but he wouldn't hear of this - no one else seems to have complained to Apple about this but I did mention this Discussion Group. All he could suggest is that I try another computer, to do a factory restore again there and then come back to the Mac!
I do have a WIndows XP virtual machine and am trying that just now, to see if this gets rid of the problem, and I'll report back. However it's not everyone that would have the facility to go down this route!

  • HT201270 Update Carrier Settings (MacBook Pro + iPad)

Using iPad in the UK on O2 carrier.
As of yesterday, iTunes keeps asking if I want to update the carrier settings of the iPad.  I've run the update more than once already and whenever I link the iPad to iTunes it asks me again.
Did this happen to anyone?  Any solutions?  It is quite annoying...
    Thank You

  • Update carrier settings? Should I do it?

I just recently got my iPhone back and factory unlocked and I plugged it in onto my laptop and when iTunes showed up it asked me if I would like to carrier update my settings? Im not sure if i should do this because I have never done it before. I currently have the Iphone 4S and unlocked for tmobile. Original carrier was AT&T. I am just scared if this can have an effect on the unlock settings and reset it to AT&T carrier? Help?

I am getting this message every day when I plug my iPhone 3GS into iTunes. I also have an unlocked iPhone with a T-mobile account. I update and it says it was updated, yet the next time I plug my iPhone into my Mac, it does it all again. It is getting annoying.

  • Updated carrier settings degrading reception?

I downloaded the new carrier settings on Monday and since then my reception has gone through the floor. Is there any way to roll back the update? Anyone else having this problem?

Have you reset (not restart) your phone? Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-10 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings. See page 34 of the manual... http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_UserGuide.pdf
