ITunes 10.5 plays & imports CDs with crackling/distortion

Hi all,
When I try to play or import a CD, I get a horrible crackling/distorted sound, and the music is barely audible underneath it. This started happening since I upgraded to iTunes when I installed iOS 5 on my iPhone. The crackling happens either when listening to the CD, or when listening to a track I have recently imported from the CD.
It seems the new version of iTunes is unable to communicate with my CD drive properly. Apple, what have you changed in the new version?!
Is anyone else having this problem?
At the minute I can get around the problem by importing my tracks into Windows Media Player and then moving them into my iTunes library...
What this is not
It's not a playback/sound drivers issue. All the existing tracks in my libary play just fine, including tracks that I imported with the previous version of iTunes. Other applications and music players are playing audio just fine too.
It's not an issue with my CD being damaged. The CD plays and imports perfectly in Windows Media Player and other players. Also, I've tried CDs which were working just fine with the previous version of iTunes, and they're now playing all crackly.
It's not an issue with my installation. I've tried removing all Apple software from my PC, restarting, and reinstalling it all - to no avail...
My details
Samsung R60 laptop.
Windows Vista (arggh, I know)
iTunes 10.5.0.142
If you've had anything similar please reply!
Thanks

Same problem here with 10.5.1.  I even connected a new cd drive and it's still not working properly.
Here is one work around that appears to temporarily fix the issue:
1) Restart Itunes
2) Change setting to "show cd"
3) Right click to copy
The above worked for me.

  • ITunes Will Not Play Entire CDs Unless Error Correction Switched Off!

I was having problems with iTunes in that it would only play 2 tracks on a CD before iTunes froze and had to be Force Quit.
On the advice of a poster on this Apple Discussions Forum I went into: iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing and unchecked the "Use error correction" button. Voila, my iTunes will now play complete CDs.
But surely this is not right? It has been suggested to me that this is a software issue and that I should carry out an archive and install of Leopard.
    What do you think?

+4. Windows blue screen comes up to check the FAT32 drive to see if there are any errors. There is nothing.+
what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)

  • How to fix the problem with importing CDs with the new version of itunes

    Hello,
I am trying to fix my itunes so that i can import CDs into my library. I understand there is a bug and i need to change to the 7.9.3 but how do i do that?? I am not computer savvy when it comes to the inner workings and changing things like i need to with this problem so help is greatly appreciated!!!

Short of rolling back your iTunes to 10.0.1.22 and your Apple Application Support to 1.3.2 (CoreAudioToolbox.dll is kept in the Apple Application Support program files), there's a few possible workarounds.
    (1) Change your importing prefs to use a different encoding (won't help with the device syncing variation though), and/or disable the convert to 128 kbps AAC when syncing option.
    (2) Replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a 7.9.3.0 as per:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12576816#12576816
    (3) Or, replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a shadow copy of a 7.9.3.0 as per:

  • ITunes 10 Will not Import CDs

I just discovered that iTunes 10 will not import audio CDs. Once you insert the CD and iTunes launches, the CD disappears from the desktop. It is not there in the finder window nor in the iTunes window. This occured on all three Macs I tried it on and occurred with about four different audio CDs.
Apple Technical Support people duplicated the problem on their Macs and have referred this to engineering. If you plan on importing audio CDs in the near future I suggest not installing iTunes 10 now.

  • Updated iPhone / iTunes and now cannot Import CDs

    OS: Win7 Home Premium
    iTunes: 10.1.0.56
Yesterday I decided to take the plunge and started importing my CD collection. About 30 CDs in I decided to take a break. I plugged in my iPhone and hit the update button in iTunes. (I’m not sure if I got the iPhone update and/or Itunes + quicktime update.) At any rate, when I went back to importing CDs nothing would import. I’ve tried about 5 different CDs, but each gets a version of this error, “Error occurred while converting the file [blah blah blah]. The disk could not be read from or written to.”
I can play CDs using iTunes. I can play previously imported CDs using iTunes. But now I cannot import CDs.

Its always the first song of the CD as I try to import it. I can play from the CD without any problem. However, when I click 'Import CD' I get the following type of error, "Error occurred while converting teh file 'Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro, K 492 - - Overture'. The disk could not be read from or written to.
I'm trying to save to a network folder. I'm not sure what the path is or how to find it again in iTunes.

  • TS1362 I am having trouble playing imported cds.  The tracks keep sticking which is a bit like buffering is this a common problem and can i rectify it.

Being new to the iphone I am having trouble listening to imported cds.  The tracks keep sticking a bit like buffering.  Is this a common problem and can it be solved just by addressing a general buffering problem which I already have on youtube but have not rectified as yet.
    Thanks Kaz T

If <alanfromnewtownards> fix fails to address the issue - turn off iMessage and Facetime in Settings.  Settings\iMessage, and Settings\facetime.
    Sync by cable to iTunes.
Leave cable connected, open Settings\iCloud and ensure at least Mail is on and dsplays your Apple iD email -  then turn iMessage and Facetime back on.  Ensure that in the ISettings...\iMessage...\Facetime page that the Receive at field and Receive video calls at email address is the same address as your Apple I.D.
    Resync when finished.
If still having problems with Facetime then check that the required port is open - allowing traffic in your router.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
In some cases you may need to turn on Port forwarding and open the port manually to allow traffic through.  See your router documentation for details.
If having problems verifying, open iTunes store App on your pad.  at bottom of page, click on your ID and sign in. Go to your Account details (re-veryfying and answering security questions may be required to do this) - check all details are correct.
Finally right click your device icon in iTunes and select Reset warnings.  resync when finished.

  • Failure to Play Imported CDs

Can anyone please help me? I'm trying to import my CD collection onto iTunes but many of my CDs fail to playback on iTunes after importing them. When I double click on a track I get the message that the song can't be used because the original file could not be located and when I ask iTunes to locate the file I'm simply sent back to the iTunes screen and the whole thing becomes a loop. I know that the imported file appears in the My Music folder on my PC but iTunes fails to play it back although the imported CD is there on the iTunes screen. I'm importing the CDs on the default setting of AAC encoder and the high quality setting. The failure to playback is even more confusing because iTunes is not playing one disc of a two CD set in several examples. Thanks in anticipation.

+the song can't be used because the original file could not be located+
This usually happens if the file gets moved or renamed.
What are you running, XP or Vista or Windows 7?
Where are you importing these CDs to, your PC's C: drive? Or an external hard drive?

  • ITunes won't play imported tunes w/o original CD in CD-Reader

I'm using Windows XP and ITunes 6 on an HP-Pavilion laptop. I imported some tunes into ITunes from the original music CD, but when I remove the CD ITunes won't play the tunes until I put the CD back in the reader. Older tunes loaded several months ago play OK without the CD in the reader. What's wrong?

Solved my problem. I had plugged in my new ION USB turntable to an USB port but not to a stereo amplifier thinking that the sound would play through my IMAC speakers. According to the ION user manual sound will come through my computer speakers when I recording a track from a record. What the manual did not say was that plugging into the USB port disabled the speakers from ITunes. When I unplugged the ION cable from the USB port I got my ITunes sound back.

  • Error messages says I need to reinstall itunes to burn or import CDs

When I start itunes I get a message that says itunes was not installed properly and if I want to burn or import CDs I need to reinstall itunes. I haven't tried burning any CDs but itunes imports CDs just fine. Everything else seems to work OK. I'm using itunes on a Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit machine. What's up?

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here. (Use your Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut to paste.)

  • Solved - Multiple Problems Playing or Importing CDs with iTunes 7.5

    Greetings,
I've been scanning these boards and seen multiple problems and solutions for the CD hangs and freezes in this upgrade. CDs would only play a song or two, then hang the program. Going to Preferences, Advanced, Importing, and unchecking the box for audio correction would allow CDs to play, but nothing could be imported. I checked and unchecked boxes, deleted and reinstalled Quicktime 7.3, 7.2, even 7.1.6. Nothing worked. The only solution, for me, was to uninstall iTunes, reboot, and then install the penultimate version, 7.4.3. I hope this helps...this has been a frustrating few days for me.
You can find all older versions of iTunes free here:
    http://filehippo.com/download_itunes
Just say no to bug-ridden fixes!
    JR

I haven't tried but I don't see why not...program is back to working normally in all other respects. To clarify my earlier problem, when importing from CDs I received an error message that the files were "corrupted and unreadable". This error applied to every song on a CD which, after reverting to 7.4.3, imported fine.

simple : you put itunes application in a folder. then you reinstall itunes 4.7 for example. then put 4.7 at the end of itunes application name, same with itunes 5. then drop each of them in the dock. decide where you want to have all the playlists so you don't have to switcha ll the time between them. then when you need to listen to a cd or import mp3, you launch itunes 4.7. then the unknown artist folder in your home folder/music will be placed in a music folder somewhere on your HD. create playlist from this folder.
then you activate itunes 5 for ipod sync or any other purpose. when itunes 6 will be finally updated, you remove itunes 5 and the home/music files of itunes 5, then reinstall the new itunes 6, which will normally take over the playlists of 4.7.
apple makes it not simple but more and more complex so it has the greatness of sophistication and class but the weakness of complexity and bugs ! hope this does not last !
thanks for the beer, send it thru internet !

  • How do I sync my imported CDs with iTunes Library to get them everywhere like purchased items?

    Good day!
I've got iPhone 4S. And I have some licensed CDs which I've imported to my PC's iTunes Library. I've synced my iPhone with that library. But I want to get these CDs on every computer where iTunes installed. So I want to have one global Library that contains both my purchased through iTunes music and my CDs. I do not want to pay twice for one album. Is it possible?

The content is only where the user puts it.
If you desire to have the content on multiple computers, put it there.  Use a flash drive, external hard drive, or copy the files over the network.

  • Issue Importing CDs with OS 10.5.4 and iTunes 7.7 update

This is just a minor issue I have noticed since updating. I was wondering if anybody else can reproduce this. Here's whats happening...
When I put a store-bought audio CD in, and iTunes recognizes it, a message pops up saying "Would you like to import the CD 'XXX' into your iTunes library?"
If I click yes, the CD seems to disappear out of iTunes and off the desktop. I hit eject on my keyboard and it comes out though. If I click no to this message, then I can click the import CD button at the bottom right of iTunes, and everything works as it should.
Like I said, its a minor issue, but maybe its an easy fix too.

This issue has already been reported several times in these forums over the past 6-8 months. Various OSX updates, iTunes updates, workarounds, have not fixed the problem as of yet. Personally, I have not imported anything since updating to 7.7, but have my fingers crossed. See the following link for a detailed discussion.
