ITunes 10.5 won't add to library OR play any audio files prior to update

I recently updated to iTunes 10.5 on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8, and iTunes won't add any of my old music files to the library, regardless of what directory they are in. The permissions on all files and folders of interest are read and write. I've tried directing the library to sevral different places, deleting the library files, etc. etc. Nothing works. Not only this, but iTunes won't even open ANY of the old files when I click on them, even though they all have the iTunes icon. Additionally, when I move the files in the library but don't tell iTunes in preferences, they still play (there are two songs in the library I just downloaded from the store to figure out what's going on). Anyone have any ideas here, this is a mess. Oh, forgot to mention I reinstalled iTunes as well and that didn't resolve any issues. Have tried restarting the computer also. Thanks for any thoughts,
Brad

  • ITunes will not play/allow import of any audio files

I have iTunes installed via Windows 7. Yesterday, iTunes stopped playing any audio files. I first noticed this problem after streaming music to my apple TV went bonkers. I tunes would play the first 3 seconds of a song and go onto the next one, even though all music played fine through iCloud on my apple TV.  Afterwords all audio files just stopped playing with an error. Before this time everything worked fine.
I double click on them or right click on play and nothing happens, period. Of note, almost all the artwork that was associated with the audio files has also disappeared in itunes.  I can still play video files with sound through itunes without any problem. I can play all music through quicktime, vlc, etc. without any issue. I can also link to my pc-itunes library and play the same music through iTunes installed on my mac without issue. I can play samples fine through itunes via the itunes store.
I tried I have tried unistalling iTunes, Quicktime, etc. (following Apple's recomendations for unistalling) with subsequent reinstalls now 3 times. I even paid good money for RegCure Pro to clean the registry - still the same problem.
I also cannot import audio files into itunes on my pc now either - dragging and dropping as well as, going through the menu - nothing works!
This has got to be the most frustrating issue that I have had to deal with on a computer!
    Please help!

I have now discovered the problem. The hard drive that I was using for iTunes was Dirty; meaning that something was corrupted. As a result I had to copy all file to a temp location and reformat the drive. This solved the problem. Of note, I had formatted the drive the first time using exFAT in hopes of being apple to use if needed with my mac mini.

  • Won't add to library TV shows stored in a network folder

iTunes 8 for Windows will not add media files of type TV Show stored on a network share to the library. I have tested this with both DRM-protected files purchased from the iTunes store, and with unprotected files I have encoded myself. Any tips on how I might diagnose this further, or make it work as intended?
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Share my Mac’s iTunes Music folder (containing a TV Shows subfolder with TV shows in it) on the network.
    2. Verify iTunes 8 for Windows will successfully add music files contained in the shared folder to its local library (e.g. by File > Add to Library…).
    3. Select File > Add to Library… and this time browse to the TV Shows subfolder. Select a particular show’s folder to import. iTunes appears to process the files, but fails silently to add them to the library.
    4. Attempt to add the same files to the library via drag-and-drop, and by right-clicking a single file and choosing Open With > iTunes. Each attempt fails silently.
    Partial work-around:
    1. In iTunes 8 on the Mac, select an episode of a TV show, right-click and choose Get Info. On the Options tab, set Media Kind to Movie. Click OK. Assuming iTunes is configured to organize files automatically, iTunes silently moves the file to the Movies subfolder of the iTunes Music folder.
    2. In iTunes 8 on Windows, choose File > Add to Library… and select the file that is now of type Movie on the network folder. The file is successfully added to the library as a TV Show!
    3. In iTunes 8 on the Mac, change the Media Kind of the file in question back to TV Show. iTunes silently moves the file back to the subfolder of TV Shows.
    4. In iTunes 8 on Windows, attempt to play the file. iTunes will complain that it cannot find the file at its designated location. Browse to the file’s new location on the network. Although iTunes will happily show the file in the library, it will fail to play it.

I've been having the same problem on my wife's Windows XP machine and after some experimentation determined that iTunes does not like the fact that there is a space in name of the "TV Shows" folder. Since iTunes wants to put TV Shows in this folder you can't change the name but I did find a pretty simple work around. From Windows Explorer I mapped a network drive directly to the "TV Shows" folder, so instead of selecting "...\iTunes Music\TV Shows" (or some level above that) as the folder when doing a File, Add Folder to Library..., I selected n:\ (the network drive I mapped) and it worked great.
I don't understand what the issue is with the space, especially since music stored on a network drive does have this problem, but this did the trick.

How are you attempting to open iTunes, and can you describe exactly what happens when you do?
Do you recall just what software update you performed?

  • ITunes 8.2 not playing any long files

I've had every single episode of the Ricky Gervais XFM shows from years back on my iTunes for about 3 years now, and have listened to them over and over until I installed this latest version of iTunes. It will now no longer let me play any of the shows and will freeze up completely causing me to have to Force Quit it. The files open with no problems in Quicktime and other software, but iTunes fails to recognise them completely. I can't even re-import the files as it just freezes iTunes yet again.
Is there any way I can use iTunes for what it was designed for? Or am I going to have to revert back to the old software?
EDIT: It took about 45 seconds to start playing a 20 minute file just now, but at least that started playing.
EDIT 2: Tried waiting even longer, it took about 2 minutes to start a 58 minute file. This is an absolute joke.

iTunes for Mac will not import nor play Windows Media Audio files. QuickTime will play them if you have the freeware Flip4Mac codec installed, but that won't work in iTunes. You may be able to convert them with EasyWMA or with QuickTime Pro and the Flip4Mac import codec (not the free version).

  • ITunes stalls when finding files-won't add to Library...

This started with trying to delete several duplicate files.  The cure turned out to be far worse than the disease.
So tonight I moved all copies of all my music to another hard drive.  Then I took a backup from a few weeks and (with Carbon Copy Cloner) ONLY backed up my iTunes music folders, hoping to start fresh.
When I open iTunes, I get that import, download or find music files screen.  If I go to add to Library nothing happens.  I select the link to search for files, and it works for anywhere from 3-20 minutes.  It gets to a point where it says "processing download.m4v" and then it stalls.  I waited over an hour once.  All you can do is force quit at that point.
The weirder thing is I have even gone into terminal to display hidden files and there is no file with that name anywhere on my computer.
I do have what is on my iPhone and I have it set so it won't sync.  My understanding is sync will replace my iphone with my iTunes library (which is nothing).
I thought there used to be a way to have the iPhone override the computer, or truly sync in that whatever is on one will be copied to the other.  But this is how I lost everything yesterday.
Even if i were to throw money at this problem right now, I have no idea how to get iTunes to import anything at this point.  I have gone in and deleted the preferences, and i have zapped the pRAM.
Any suggestions or reference much appreciated.

  • Merge two iTunes libraries fails due to ADD TO LIBRARY...

I want to merge my laptop iTunes library back into my desktop itunes library (both machines are Macs running OS X 10.7.5 with iTunes 11.0.1).
However on the desktop, the iTunes "Add to Library..." command does nothing when I select the XML file on the laptop to which I exported my laptop library!
(The laptop drive is shared, and I access it over the network.)
Anyone know how to resolve this?

OK, finally had a chance to try this: just used a playlist (all I really need are the new songs, and I made a smart playlist based on date added to get these songs [copied those to a manual playlist that I then exported]).
    Procedure:
exported playlist on laptop to XML file on laptop
copied songs in playlist within iTunes (view playlist, select all, right click and select copy)
then in Finder pasted the copied playlist songs to a new folder on laptop
on desktop did a Add to Library to add songs over network from playlist folder on laptop (from prior step)
on desktop did a Library->Import Playlist and imported playlist XML file from step 1 (over network)
(One observation: some of the songs were purchased from iTunes: at first I didn't realize why all the songs didn't get imported into desktop library in step 4; then I realized they were already there on the desktop because they were purchased and the desktop and laptop have the same iTunes account ... so a purchase on laptop automagically appears in the desktop library!)
    RESULT:
Sure, the playlist got created OK, but key metadata seems to have NOT been copied over, e.g. all my star ratings except for two songs were not copied over.
Example: one song had a 4 star rating and sure enough an XML entry "<key>Rating</key><integer>80</integer>"
...but it came out in the desktop library with NO start rating.
Time for some manual updates ... and a better procedure!

  • Iweb won't play my audio files when published

Can someone please help? I spent hours creating a website for music i produce. It works all fine and dandy on the preview pages, but when published the audio files and video files don't play. All that comes up is the picture and a small quick time player logo underneath. I have tried several different remedies but nothing seems to be working. Is this just difficulties with the new me.com facilities or what? Any help would be gratefully recieved.
    Thanks very much,
    a very frustrated mac user.

I gave up on your page because the file size is absurd.
Your source files are AIFF format (raw CD quality audio) that measures 10 MB's per minute. I don't have the time to wait for 6 of these files to load in your single page:
    http://web.mac.com/thekoles/the_koles/Media/trouble%20and%20strife%20150808%202. aif is 47 MB's.
Compress your files in iTunes to reduce the file size.

  • ITunes closes when I try to play any video file.

I purchased a movie in the iTunes store. Now when I am in iTunes all the audio files work fine (music, podcasts, etc) but any video file takes me to a black screen and a popup that says "iTunes has stopped working". I tried opening the files in Quicktime media player but received an "unknown error". I was able to to download the movie from the cloud and play it with no problems.
Originally this happened whenever I opened iTunes but after reinstalling it the issue was limited to videos.
I have reset proxy settings in case it was an issue with the iTunes store
I have tried various playback resolutions
I am using windows 8 on an Acer Aspire V3
16 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD
I have update iTunes and Quicktime.

    Hello, jonahrnhrt.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that iTunes quits unexpectedly.  Here is the troubleshooting article that I would recommend going through for this specific issue.

  • ITunes 11.3 some things add to library and some don't

I have iTunes 11.3.1 (2) (64 bit) and a Mackbook Pro 13" (early 2011 model) OS X 10.9.4. I moved my music, audiobooks, movies, podcasts, etc to a home server (Seagate Central) and created a new library. I was able to add my ring tones to iTunes as well as my audiobooks and about 600 of my songs. Some songs add and some don't. Doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason. I've imported m4a, mp3, m4p. The items that have imported and am trying to import come from the same iTunes Media/Music folder. I've tried adding both by folder and by individual file. I've also right-clicked a song and selected to open in iTunes and nada. I've also checked the Recently Added playlist and nothing is there as well. These same songs played when they were stored on my Macbook. I don't get it. I'll see a millisecond flash of the album but nothing happens. The only common factors I can see is that if it will let me play it in the finder it will let me add to iTunes. Also, it seems that 'older' stuff I added from CD from my older iPod days doesn't add. For kicks, I tried to copy and paste an album back to my MBP and it says I don't have permission but that happens with both ones that show up in the program and ones that don't. I'm the admin on both my laptop and the server. Grr. HELP!
PS: When I use Seagate's remote site I can listen to songs that won't play in my Finder or add.

I haven't seen this issue before but I have seen lots of posts here about issues with using iTunes with NAS.  General rule of thumb is iTunes is not guaranteed to play well with NAS.  For some it does, for others not.
My understanding is NAS uses its own software to interface with the computer's software.  This could well have been designed with Windows in mind and the drive you are using may be formatted NTFS for Windows and iTunes is having to trust the software 100% for interfacing.  Perhaps your files have illegal characters for Windows naming convention.
Remember the game where people sit in a long row and whisper a message from one end to the other, then compare the results which almost invariably have been garbled in transmission? That's iTunes and your files over NAS.
Maybe some of this is iTunes fault but if you take this issue to an Apple Store I bet they will ask you why you aren't using a plain external hard drive.  If you use third party hardware then it is up to the vendor (who likely sells 95% to PC users) to ensure the interface works.

  • 10.5 iTunes IOS5= iT won't add Purchased, music videos, more duplicates from 8200 to over 12945, i think 80% more than i had before, freeze, purchased items from iTunes should be downloaded again from purchased page in the Store, so reinstalling All my Ap

    Hi,
After installing iOS5 on iTunes and iPhone, everything went almost smoothly, except activation, which i finally fixed it.
The issues i am now experiencing are for the most after iOS5 and iTunes 10.5
No direct connection to Wifi Spot at HOME, ( i don't have a Carrier contract) I have to be really 2 metres near the router to connect, but not with iPad which i didn't update to OS5 yet, My Library problem is everyday i have to upload all my music from my computer, from nearly 2000 songs to really 12945 now!!! most of them duplicates, duplicates!!! Enormous , songs, music videos, and movies, all duplicated !!!
I bought a software for fixing this problem, but unfortunately not working at all.I stop this way and buy no more softwares.
I don't really see most of my Apps in iTunes Store=purchased, even though i have to download them everyday, i mean right now 93 are being on download platform, and tomorrow morning, i am not sure to have the 90 Apps on my Library, that in total should be near 600 or more than that.So my kid will ask for one game to play, and i will really have a hard time to find it(iPhone freezes when looking for App Store+update+ Purchased then ALL or Not in the iPhone, it freezes excessively, and when you got one app and push download then you go to iPhone 3, 4 or 5 th page, then rolling back to App Store etc,,,,
Something is wrong, but i don't know it comes from.
Back in 2002/3 first i bought the second generation of iPod, i never saw a duplicate song or file, but now it is different. It becomes sort of a challenge to open your iTunes on your Laptop, and you figure out that your Library is Empty, you have to look for Folders, and no Purchased icon under iTunes Store, No Music Videos either!!!
Somebody has to sort this out Hopefully
    Best Regards

I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background.
What brand of PC do you have? Sony VIAO is notoriuous for having some software which corrupts the iTunes library.
If you are routinely generating more and more duplicates in your library then you are adding media in the wrong way. Simply scanning the entire media folder over & over again is a likely cause of problems, particularly if this is a different folder from the one currently set as the iTunes Media folder. Use a tool like iTunes Folder Watch which can scan your media folders, add new files and remove missing ones.

  • Some tracks won't add to library

Switched from the Zune software to iTunes this week after getting a 1st gen iPod Touch and it was all going so well until I realised a whole bunch of my music was missing from my library. I've tried adding from the file menu and dragging/dropping but neither will work. I select the file or folder to add but absolutelt nothing happens, no error message, nothing. Strangely it seems to be specific albums that are affected rather than random individual tracks, but the albums in question seem to be tagged correctly, aren't corrupted, and aren't in any weirdly named directories or anything like that.
I've contemplated editing the iTunes Music Library.xml file to try and add them manually but I don't know if it would work (plus the xml is pretty complex). I also looked for a 3rd party app to use instead of iTunes but none will sync with iTouches.
Anyone have a solution for this?

Some audio formats don't sync with an iPod. Make sure all of them are either .AIF .WAV .MP3 .MP4 .ACC and maybe find a way to convert them if they aren't. I hope this helps, somewhat.

  • Music plays, won't add to library or ipod

its a specific album of mp3s just downloaded that will play in itunes just fine, but despite every obvious effort such as dragging into various parts of the interfaces and using the menu dialogs just can't seem to add these songs to the library and subsequently ipod. successfully done this plenty of times recently, even since the last time the main itunes folder was moved.  can there be something about this free download that is preventing it from being played on anything but home pcit was downloaded to? thanks -sh

  • ITunes 7.4 won't recognize my library files

I have all my music on an external hard drive and just changed from set playlists to smart playlists. I upgraded to 7.4 tonight and
    1) It wouldn't import my library.XML file
    2) Couldn't find my iTunes folder on the external hard drive
    3) Erased all my playlists including the ones I built on a song by song basis
    4) Deleted all my song ratings and play counts and modified data.
Thanks Steve. I really needed to spend hours on end adding back in my playlists, ratings and fixing genres that were incorrect.

    I have the same problem.
I've had these songs in itunes & on my ipod before for awhile & they played just fine. I upgraded itunes & everything seemed fine, until I auto synced my ipod & I get this message saying that five files aren't copied to the ipod because the ipod won't play them. Then I try to play them in itunes & itunes won't play them, even though they show up in the library & are MP3s. Quicktime player & VLC both play these files still...
I have no idea what could cause the error for these random 5 songs, which are not related to each other & come off the same CDs as other songs which are still able to be played...
