ITunes 10.5 won't open - kernel32.dll

I'm having a few problems opening iTunes.  I was told a newer version was available by iTunes so I downloaded version 10.5.  Whenever I try to open iTunes after a few seconds it says 'iTunes has stopped working', then closes the program.  That's it, no explanation or error; nothing.
I've uninstalled, emptied recycle bin, run virus checks, updated all security software and a Checkdisk and reinstalled from a fresh download, rebooted, and rebooted in safe mode, all of which have the same result when I try to open iTunes.  Quicktime and everything else runs fine.

I agree on deleting or getting the junk out of \Roaming\Apple.... Just to be clearer, I meant to say "move AND delete" just to be sure you have a copy somewhere, even if only to compare to. In the end I spent far too long looking for a needle in haystack rather than just start over.
I had trouble on 10/19 so I then looked to see what was modified then.
There are some other prefs that may be in AppData\Local as well that you want to dump.
Two years into Windows 7 I was going to do clean install anyway. Was hoping there would be a 2nd Preview of 8 though. 10.5 works fine on Windows 8 except for iPod service and AMS, and was unable even with clean system install to upgrade iPod to iOS 5 --- that was what I really really wanted to accomplish and figure out, and even with clean install was a "dead end."
Now I'm beginning to list or learn that some of my apps and others don't work with iOS 5 or iTunes 10.5.
If some one has the luxury of a 2nd copy or hard drive or both to have another install of Windows, always useful, and one way to test and find out what works and then migrate files.

  • ITunes 11.3 won't open

    iTunes 11.3 won't open on 13" Mac Macbook Pro mid 2012  OS X 0.8.2

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open

A week ago, Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open but other applications will, like Mozilla, iPhoto, Word, Excel, etc. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get Safari and the other programs to open? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, I'm replying to myself to add more information on my case. I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:
    Command: Installer

I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack, I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing. I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone?

  • ITunes 10.7 won't open some Libraries

I just noticed that iTunes (10.7) won't open some of my libraries. I have 5 that I use for various purposes. The main one with all my music is now grayed out. Only 2 out of the 5 will load, and they are not the most important ones, so I am kind of stuck.
A few weeks ago I upgraded from Leopard 10.5 to Mountain Lion 10.8, then got an iPhone 5, but iTunes worked for a while after the upgrade and I put some songs on the iPhone.
I just got the fix for iPhoto 4.9 which was causing it's own problems, and now iTunes isn't working. (Actually it wasn't working when iPhoto had problems too.)
So what can I do to fix this? Delete my library files and start over just when I had it all set up for the iPhone? And will it happen again?

A valid iTunes library has a file called library.itl  The .xml file is a copy in a different format put there by iTunes so other programs can read the library, but itunes itself uses the .itl file.  So in essence the folders with no .itl have no library.  You can create a blank library by holding down the option key while starting iTunes.  Now import the .xml file from one of those orphan libraries.

Are you trying to transfer the GarageBand projects or the rendered audio files? What version of GarageBand do you have on your iPhone?
I do not think you can share your GarageBand projects from your iPhone to GarageBand on your Mac, unless you have iCloud, afaik, only the audio files.
How did you transfer the song?
To share from an IOS device the Projects or audio files, see:  Share GarageBand songs

  • Itunes and safari won't open

My itunes stopped working after I came back from vacation. I tried uninstalling everything and updating to 10.1 but it won't open. When I click it, it shows up in the task manager for a moment and then disappears with no error messages. Quicktime works fine but when I downloaded and installed safari it won't open either.
Then I created another user account and tried it there and it doesn't work. It also looks like the plugin for adobe acrobat has stopped working as well. I have to right click and save as to view pdfs. I tried disabling the bonjour service and restarting the computer but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas? I have windows 7 x64 professional
    Thanks

Still having the same problem I'm getting a distnoted.exe *32 that pops up in the taskmanager for a short time after trying to open it. I did get this after creating another user account: Itunes has stopped working

  • Itunes 11.0 won't open

I installed itunes 11.0 on my pc(windows vista) and it won't open at all.  I've tried removing the whole program and reinstalling but it still won't open.  Any help is appreciated.

GOOD! Uninstall it, and stick with the previous version.  11 has MAJOR issues- losing songs, playlists, can't display duplicates, etc.  This community board is exploding with issues.  Keep what you have!!!

  • Itunes downloaded but won't open on Windows 8

I just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 and Itunes downloaded fine but it won't open.  It says "Itunes has stopped working".  I have a Sony Vaio and my previous computer was a Sony Vaio so I know it should be working.  Any tips or advice on what to try?

If that doesn't solve things then for general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • ITunes downloads but won't open

Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 7 in September, I've been having problems...it worked great for the first week and now refuses to open. I've tried completely removing iTunes, Quicktime, and iPod Updater before reinstalling, but it still won't work after several tries. I've tried opening it from Windows Task Manager, from Program Files, the Start Menu, and by clicking on the icon. The program and my music is there, it just won't open--I don't even get an error message. It just doesn't do anything. Help!
Dell Dimension DIM2400   Windows XP Pro   Intel Pentium 4 Processor

I only have 256MB of RAM, though I'm planning on upgrading. Do you think that might be a problem?
it's not the first thing i think about in these circumstances. if you're planning on upgrading anyway, that's fine. but i probably wouldn't rush your plans as part of a troubleshooting measure for the itunes/quicktime thing.
backtracking to something else you said earlier:
itunes.exe does appear in the Task Manager processes once I click on it, but not under applications.
is it a long persistence in there, or is it more of a quick 1-2 second appearance? (that can help with identifying possible culprits.)
if you try launching your QT after a reboot, does the QuickTimePlayer.exe process appear (in Task Manager in the Processes tab) immediately, or do you have to wait for 5 minutes before that one shows up?

  • ITunes downloaded but won't open

Got new iPod yesterday. Downloaded iTunes successfully (already had QTime) but it won't open. Have tried running virus scanner & AdAware, updated browser and checked all browser and audio settings. Have uninstalled and reinstalled both iTunes and QuickTime SEVEN times, but still can't launch iTunes. All other software functioning normally. iPod unit itself seems to work--but, of course, no music on it yet. Have spent 5.5 hours going through every suggestion on this site, but nothing helps; all settings seem to be correct. Cannot find any contact info for APPLE!!!! Extremely frustrated. Anyone have suggestions?

I spent about 8 hrs on this yesterday (Thanks Apple). I did get it to work though, here is what I did:
I was able to get Itunes to work
Posted: Dec 26, 2006 6:34 PM Reply Email
I did all the things everyone suggested but no luck.
The way I made it work: I removed Itunes and quicktime as directed in other threads via the control panel. Then I did a search of the root directory for anything with itune in it (itune.), I then deleted those files. I did the same thing for quicktime. After deleting the files I emptied the recycle bin, rebooted and then reinstalled Itunes. I did not install to the default directory (C:\program files\Itunes), I put Itunes on the root (C:\Itunes).I really don't know if it was stupid luck or if it was the correct thing to do but it worked for me? Could be that just putting it on the root C: did the trick?
There were some quick time files that I couldn't delete.
There were also some itune files that I couldn't delete until I went to the directory and deleted the whole directory, the folders had long names with both letters and numbers.
This was for my duaghters new Ipod, I am going to stick with my Zen.
