ITunes 10.7 "upgrade" doesn't recognize my library

Just installed the latest iTunes (10.7). Instead of bringing up my library, it's showing me startup info about how to add music to a (presumably empty) new library.
The software was pointing to a newly created "ITunes Media" folder. I've used preferences to point to the actual location of my library (on an external drive), but I keep getting the same startup info screens, with no music (/movies/etc.) list (although the prefs now show the correct location for my media).
I know I can choose "Add to library" to get iTunes to construct a new list... but then I think everything will have the current date as "Date Added," which I don't want.
How can I fix this? Thanks for any help.
(MacBook dual core black [2006 model] running OS X 10.6.8 — hardware is too old to run 10.7.x)

Ouch.  You don't use preferences to point to a library on an external drive.  I hope you didn't do anything with preferences.  You use that to redirect iTunes to where you want to put just media which is only part of your library.  The other part of your library is, uh, wherever you keep it.
If you really keep the whole library on an external, start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key, then point it to the iTunes folder on the external.

  • ITunes Match & new SSD doesn't recognize previous library.

    Hello:
I have my iTunes library on an external drive and I recently replaced my internal drive with a new SSD. I installed all the software, opened iTunes and pointed the music folder to that external drive. I then turned on iTunes Match and after it had scanned the library (where it should've matched the previous songs) I got a response that said I had too many songs in the cloud and showed duplicates of EVERY song - one with a download 'cloud' icon and the song's file from my external drive.
I've tried fixing it but it appears that the only way I can get around it is to delete all those files from my external drive and force iTunes Match to RE-download every song which is pointless because the files are already ON the hard drive. And yes, all those files on that external drive are the 'matched' iTunes-native files (not the MP3s from Google or past CD rips).
Is there ANY way to get iTunes Match to see those files as a match to those in the cloud? I've had good luck with iTunes Match so far, but if I have to download the files again this time (or every time I get a new computer) it's a definite deal breaker. I have Time Warner and their bandwidth restrictions are going to kill me if this is the case.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Rodney

The reason this is happening is because you didn't restore the iTunes DB files. Specifically the iTunes Library.itl.
In Finder go to ~/Music and move the iTunes folder to the Trash. Don't delete the trash yet. Now restore the iTunes folder from the backup from before the SSD was replaced. Now when you open iTunes it will see the "original" library and you'll be able to use iTunes just as you did before.

  • ITunes 10.5.1 doesn't recognize my iPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1 (9A405) Laptop OS Windows XP. Please help

iTunes 10.5.1 doesn't recognize my iPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1 (9A405) Laptop OS Windows XP. When I connect iPhone to laptop, iTunes sends me an alert:" This iPhone can't be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". This started right after I have upgraded iTunes from 10.5 to 10.5.1. Please help !

Thanks for the hint ! I used the following link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925.
    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
    2. Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled
    3. Reinstall iTunes and related components
Had to remove all Apple related softwares and utilities, and re-install all back. iTunes recognizes my phone now ! Cheers !

  • Upgraded, doesn't recognize my ipod now (SYS)

I made the mistake of upgrading my iTunes and now it doesn't recognize my ipod. Instead it shows an ipod in the Source window named SYS with none of my music showing up. I think it still is reading something on the ipod because it shows how full my ipod is, I just can't get to any of the music. I mostly use my ipod for listening to music through my computer so it's a bummer that I can't get to it, and there is music on there that I don't have the cd for anymore so I can't just reimport it. Also, I completely removed the new iTunes and reinstalled the iTunes I used previously and it still doesn't work.
If anyone has seen this before or has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. I'm not very computer-literate so talk slow.. haha. Thank you!

  • This Question is at least 2.5 years old.  But still an issue.  I have an early 2008 and mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro running iTunes 10.7.  Itunes on both machines doesn't recognize blank cds or allow me to import from a music cd when I insert it.

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

I hope to hear from you...
    Thanks!

ok believe it or not....but I found the answer and everything works now!!!:
Once again hanks for the help guys!
    Symptoms
In rare circumstances, an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may not be recognized in iTunes on Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard after the Mac is restarted. If you reinstall iTunes, your device may be recognized. However, restarting your Mac may result in the device not being recognized again.
Note: These steps do not apply to OS X Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Resolution
Follow the below steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Note: Some of these steps will require that you enter your Mac OS X user password. If you do not know your user's password, follow this article first.
Install all software updates. If you have an update available for an SDK (Software Development Kit), be sure these updates are also installed. Do this by clicking the Apple () menu, choosing Software Update, and following the on-screen instructions. If you need to download iTunes manually, you can download it here.
Disconnect the device and quit iTunes.
In Finder, click the Go menu and then choose Go to Folder. Enter the following location into the text field that appears:
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    Click Go.
Locate the file "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig" and drag it to the Trash. (Do not move the similarly named "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist" file to the Trash.)
Restart your Mac, open iTunes, and connect your device. If your device shows up in iTunes, restart your Mac one more time and confirm the issue is still resolved.

  • Upgraded to iTunes 8, now it doesn't recognize previous music folders

I have stored my iTunes library on an external hard drive (F drive). When I updated to iTunes 8, the update automatically reset my preferences to the C drive.
I changed the iTunes music folder preference back to the F drive but it does not recognize any of the music stored there. It does allow me to store other music on the F drive, but will not recognize previously existing music.
How do I get my music back?

Well I reloaded the files and that seemed to help, I'd say I recovered about 75% of my music but that still leaves about 500+/- songs that iTunes 8 doesn't recognize. Now I need to go back and manually load each CD and hope that resolves the problem that iTunes 8 caused.
    What a pathetic "upgrade."

  • I downloaded the latest iTunes and now it doesn't recognize my iPhone

I downloaded the latest iTunes update and now it doesn't recognize my iPhone

Thank you so much for your reply! I ended up calling Apple Support. (My phone was still eligible for free support.) The person was very helpful and was able to help me resolve the problem. In my case, it involved deleting itunes and some other things from my PC computer and reinstalling them. Works perfectly now.

  • MacOS iTunes 11.0.5 doesn't recognize iPad or iPhone.

I just returned from a two week vacation, and plugged my iPad and iPhone into my iMac to sync them and discovered that iTunes doesn't recognize them either on my wifi network, or via USB.
iTunes (11.0.5) does recognize my iPod nano, and iPhoto does recognize my iPhone and iPad.  They are just totally AWOL in iTunes.  I've tried rebooting all of the devices including my computer, and all of the other relavent steps in the troubleshooting guide.  Nothing helped.
I successfully synced both devices to my iMac before leaving for vacation, but I can't remember if I did that before updating iTunes or not.
I even erased my iPad and then tried connecting it to my iMac, and still no luck.
Also, my device back ups are no longer showing up in the "devices" tab in iTunes preferences.
My MacBook Air, running iTunes 11.0.4 recognizes both devices.  Both my laptop and my desktop are running OS 10.8.4
Has anyone else experienced similar issues?  Any solutions?
    Cheers.

I thought I'd reply to my own post in case this can help others.  I solved my issue by downloading and re-installing iTunes.  I didn't even need to un-install it via Terminal first.  I ran the installer, and my iPhone and iPad connected immediately.
