ITunes 10.7 won't open - Windows XP Pro

I learned from the Apple Store that to use our new iPad, I needed a version of iTunes of 10 or higher.  I was running iTunes ver. 9.2.1.5.  Disclaimer:  when opening iTunes (ver 9.2.1.5) I would always get a dialog box saying something along the lines of "Windows system components required for iTunes are missing" but I could just click on Continue and iTunes opened and worked fine.  I could not find which Windows components were missing.  I am running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3.  32-bit  The desktop has a 1.8 Ghz Intel Celeron Processsor.  1.99 Gb of RAM
I upgraded from the old version of iTunes to ver. 10.7.0.21.  The download and install all went smoothly and there were no error messages.  When the install was done, iTunes didn't open.  I closed everything, restarted and tried again - no luck.  When I click on iTunes, the hourglass appears for several seconds and then disappears.  Nothing more happens.
I went to the Apple Support Communities site and read a number of discussions with the same problem.  Here's what I've tried so far, and the results.
1.     I opened the Windows Task Manager, clicked on Processes and then tried to open iTunes.   iTunes appeared briefly in Task Manager - Processes (iTunes.exe) and then disappeared.  Nothing more.
2.     I read of a problem with Data Extraction Protection, so I added iTunes and iTunes Helper to the Data Extraction Protection exception list.  No change - no iTunes.  Reversed that change.
3.     I found, read, and followed the knowledge base article "Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP"  (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925)  The only thing I noticed was that QuickTime was not downloaded or installed.  I had not checked the box to make iTunes the default audio player, but I don't know if that is why.  After the download and install (ver 10.7 again) iTunes still did not open.  Same hourglass performance as before.
4.     I downloaded and installed QuickTime (ver 7.73.80.64) restarted the desktop and tried iTunes - still no luck.
5.     I turned off my anti-virus software (Avast) and tried iTunes - no luck.  Restarted Avast
6.     I turned off ZoneAlarm and tried iTunes - still no luck.  Restarted ZoneAlarm
I am now out of ideas and still cannot open iTunes.  I fear I actually have some missing or corrupt Windows component (virus infection over a year ago), but have no idea how to narrow down or identify and fix the problem.  If anyone has already solved this problem or has good ideas for a solution, please let me know.  Sorry for being so long-winded but I felt providing all the information was necessary.  Thanks!

Many thanks b noir for pointing me in the right direction.  I now have iTunes 10.7 up and running and it works fine.
After your question I was sure I didn't have a smart card service and searched for ways to reinstall it.  I also was advised by my computer literate brother to recheck Windows Updates for Smart Card services.  I found the (long ago hidden by me) Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package (KB909520) and ran that update.  Then I retried the process I found at a web site named lazybit.  The specific URL for that one is
http://lazybit.com/index.php/2007/12/19/windows_xp_re_install_smart_card_service  if anyone needs it.
I'm honestly not sure which piece did what but I now have a service named Smart Card Helper, and iTunes opens just fine.  Good enough for me - thanks again!!

  • Itunes 10.1 won't open Windows XP

I have been trying to open iTunes 10.1 and it wont open. It worked fine until I had to do a system recovery on my computer. All other programs work fine, but no error message pops up on when I try and open it. The wait icon comes up and nothing happens. Quicktime works fine. It wont even work when I connect the ipod. I checked to see if the itunes folders were still there, and they are. I've tried switching the users and it still wont work. I think it has something to do with the avast! Antivirus system that was installed. I have never had any problems before. Nothing is working. Help...

Are you trying to transfer the GarageBand projects or the rendered audio files? What version of GarageBand do you have on your iPhone?
I do not think you can share your GarageBand projects from your iPhone to GarageBand on your Mac, unless you have iCloud, afaik, only the audio files.
How did you transfer the song?
To share from an IOS device the Projects or audio files, see:  Share GarageBand songs

  • ITunes 11.3 won't open

    iTunes 11.3 won't open on 13" Mac Macbook Pro mid 2012  OS X 0.8.2

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open

A week ago, Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open but other applications will, like Mozilla, iPhoto, Word, Excel, etc. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get Safari and the other programs to open? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, I'm replying to myself to add more information on my case. I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:

I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack, I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing. I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone?

  • ITunes 10.7 won't open some Libraries

I just noticed that iTunes (10.7) won't open some of my libraries. I have 5 that I use for various purposes. The main one with all my music is now grayed out. Only 2 out of the 5 will load, and they are not the most important ones, so I am kind of stuck.
A few weeks ago I upgraded from Leopard 10.5 to Mountain Lion 10.8, then got an iPhone 5, but iTunes worked for a while after the upgrade and I put some songs on the iPhone.
I just got the fix for iPhoto 4.9 which was causing it's own problems, and now iTunes isn't working. (Actually it wasn't working when iPhoto had problems too.)
So what can I do to fix this? Delete my library files and start over just when I had it all set up for the iPhone? And will it happen again?

A valid iTunes library has a file called library.itl  The .xml file is a copy in a different format put there by iTunes so other programs can read the library, but itunes itself uses the .itl file.  So in essence the folders with no .itl have no library.  You can create a blank library by holding down the option key while starting iTunes.  Now import the .xml file from one of those orphan libraries.

  • ITunes Dreadfully Slow  (w/PC Running Windows XP Pro)

Can anyone answer why iTunes is dreadfully slow on PC (Windows XP Pro), compared to OSX (SnowLeopard)?
Just even booting iTunes on PC w/Windows XP Pro, takes aprox 30-40 seconds. Where as compared to OSX SnowLeopard, it is instantaneous.

You can see several reports of it being done successfully with Tiger if you Google for it. But it is illegal as it's working on stolen and hacked copies of OS X.mrtotes

  • Itunes downloaded but won't open on Windows 8

I just purchased a laptop with Windows 8 and Itunes downloaded fine but it won't open.  It says "Itunes has stopped working".  I have a Sony Vaio and my previous computer was a Sony Vaio so I know it should be working.  Any tips or advice on what to try?

If that doesn't solve things then for general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • Itunes and safari won't open

My itunes stopped working after I came back from vacation. I tried uninstalling everything and updating to 10.1 but it won't open. When I click it, it shows up in the task manager for a moment and then disappears with no error messages. Quicktime works fine but when I downloaded and installed safari it won't open either.
Then I created another user account and tried it there and it doesn't work. It also looks like the plugin for adobe acrobat has stopped working as well. I have to right click and save as to view pdfs. I tried disabling the bonjour service and restarting the computer but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas? I have windows 7 x64 professional
    Thanks

  • Itunes 11.0 won't open

I installed itunes 11.0 on my pc(windows vista) and it won't open at all.  I've tried removing the whole program and reinstalling but it still won't open.  Any help is appreciated.

GOOD! Uninstall it, and stick with the previous version.  11 has MAJOR issues- losing songs, playlists, can't display duplicates, etc.  This community board is exploding with issues.  Keep what you have!!!

  • ITunes downloads but won't open

Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 7 in September, I've been having problems...it worked great for the first week and now refuses to open. I've tried completely removing iTunes, Quicktime, and iPod Updater before reinstalling, but it still won't work after several tries. I've tried opening it from Windows Task Manager, from Program Files, the Start Menu, and by clicking on the icon. The program and my music is there, it just won't open--I don't even get an error message. It just doesn't do anything. Help!
Dell Dimension DIM2400   Windows XP Pro   Intel Pentium 4 Processor

I only have 256MB of RAM, though I'm planning on upgrading. Do you think that might be a problem?
it's not the first thing i think about in these circumstances. if you're planning on upgrading anyway, that's fine. but i probably wouldn't rush your plans as part of a troubleshooting measure for the itunes/quicktime thing.
backtracking to something else you said earlier:
itunes.exe does appear in the Task Manager processes once I click on it, but not under applications.
is it a long persistence in there, or is it more of a quick 1-2 second appearance? (that can help with identifying possible culprits.)
if you try launching your QT after a reboot, does the QuickTimePlayer.exe process appear (in Task Manager in the Processes tab) immediately, or do you have to wait for 5 minutes before that one shows up?

  • ITunes 10.5 won't open after upgrade NO ERROR MSG

I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 yesterday on my laptop running Windows XP 32bit.
Download and install went ok, but when I try to open iTunes it just won't load.
There is no error message or pop-up - the hourglass icon appears briefly, and iTunes.exe comes up in the Windows Task Manager for about three seconds and then disappears.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, as well as repairing in Control Panel>Add or remove Programs, but still have the same issue.
I should mention that Quicktime opens just fine.
Please help and thanks so very much in advance!

    iFOUND the Solution!!!
Go to Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel and for every program that is Apple - iTunes - Quicktime related RIGHT click on it and choose "Repair" and repair it. May take some time for each program.
Then, I got an error message saying:
"the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."
Here, from the Start Menu, search "Apple Software Update" and update every program it says needs updating. I recently this week updated Quicktime to its latest version, but did so anyway. So I updated Quicktime and iTunes...restarted computer...and it worked.
That's how you do it. iTunes 10.5 works fine now. Hope it does equally well for you.

  • My itunes 8.1 won't open

I have been having problems with itunes for a few months now with Itunes 8.0/8.1 on Windows XP. Back in December when itunes 8.0 came out, i downloaded it and I think my quicktime program became corrupt shortly there after. Now whenever I try to open itunes I get this message:
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what data this error report contains, click here."
I've tried alot of the things on the support pages for when itunes won't open. It isn't just this user - I made a new user and itunes didn't work for it either. The other thing is that when I try to uninstall quicktime I get errors and it doesn't work. I've uninstalled and re-installed itunes a thousand times too. Updating to 8.1 wasn't effective either.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get my itunes working again?

I couldn't solve it. So, I just use the previous version of itunes.
As a matter of fact, everything goes crazy after update and also upgrade of OS. I have more or less the same problem now, since I upgrade my Mac OS X to the latest version "Mavericks". Eveything is slow and undesirable. It seems there is no solution for these problems.
I decide to format all the labtop and again instal the mac OS from the begining. Hope it works and get my labtop back in the previous condition.
