ITunes 10 and network hard drives

Ever since upgrading to iTunes 10, iTunes regularly loses track of my music library - which is on a network drive. It appears that other folks on these boards are having similar issues.
Anyone from Apple care to comment?

Thanks, Katrina.
Permissions is exactly what it was. I looked at the error 5000 solutions for the Mac, and it was all about permissions. I checked my exHD permissions, and sure enough it was set for read-only. Changed it and everything is working fine.

  • How to Run iTunes off a Network Hard Drive?

How do you set up multiple computers in the same house to run iTunes off of a common music library stored as a shared folder on a network hard drive?
It seems that this would be a simple & obvious thing to do just by changing the music folder path on all computers (under Edit -> Prefs -> Advanced) to point to the folder on the network drive, but that doesn't seem to do it...so far I can only see the full library of files from the computer I've used to set it all up.
    Thanks much

Same way as before, hold down shift as you start iTunes, Choose or Create a library.

  • Problems with itunes 10 and external hard drive

    Hi
I was recently forced to change the internal hard drive on my G5 Tower, and the external hard drive where I keep my music library.
The new external drive had all my music files copied to it. I reloaded my itunes library files (that I had backed up from old computer) into my music folder and I named the new external drive as the media folder in Itunes preferences. The first time I used itunes it asked me if I wanted it to locate all files to which I pressed OK. itunes quickly found the majority of files and I cleaned up / organized the small mess left behind.
Trouble is a few problems have occurred. Firstly, itunes seems slow – there’s a sluggish pause flicking between tracks – where as before it used to snap into response. Occasionally I’m asked to locate files which I thought was a task it had already done - and every now and again when I check the external hard drive music library I find files have been moved from there album locations to ‘untitled’ folders, etc. I can only assume itunes is doing this. I’ve also noticed I can’t remove the external hard drive from the desktop without closing itunes first which never happened before.
This is getting somewhat frustrating. Can anybody advise?
    Much appreciated.
    K

    Hi Nick,
Avoid the WD files completely, not needed & often a problem.
You need to erase the Drive, & to use it on both Format it MS-DOS/FAT32, on the Mac or PC, but will have a 4 GB filesize limit, as well as other limitations.
One option not mentioned yet is MacDrive for your PCs... allows them to Read/Write  & Format HFS+, so no need to reformat it...

  • Itunes music and exernal hard drive?

i want to move my itunes music over to my external harddrive so i can clear up space on my internal harddrive. How do i do this? Also, how do i do this so that when i open up itunes the music from the external will open up as well. Because i tried moving my music already, but when i opened up itunes, no music showed, evntn though it was in my external drive.
    ---thanks for reading...please help---

I keep the majority of my music on my externals. Drag your music over to your external and make sure it is now only on the external. To clear up your hard drive, make sure you go to preferences and go to "Advanced" and make sure to uncheck "Copy files to iTunes folder". When you bring the music files back over from the external to your library, you will have an alias instead of the file and the memory that goes with it. You will lose any playlists that you have created and will need to start over I do believe. I leave my external running 24/7 and then when ever I wake or start up the computer my music is always there. Good luck!

  • Itunes Library and External Hard Drive

I store the majority of my music on an external hard drive since the hard drive in my laptop is very small. iTunes works great when I have my hard drive plugged in, all my music is there, ready for me to play. When I am just using my laptop though, iTunes still displays all the music I have, regardless of whether I can't play it. Is there any work around for this? Otherwise I have to search through a bunch of music I can't play, or remember exactly albums I have left on my laptop.

All I can suggest is, go through your library and make a playlist of the songs you have on the laptop. Then when you unplug the external drive, use the playlist.
But as far as it changing the icon to the exclamation point without trying to play it, I do not know of anyway to get that to work.
One thing you might try.... close itunes, then unplug and relaunch itunes, it might check the files.

  • Help with itunes librairy and external hard drive

My question is that , when I buy an external hard drive to save my movies, music, shows, etc off of itunes store, then how do I save them to the external drive automatically? When I download the itunes store, or librairy, on my computer should it be downloaded to my computer, or the external hard drive? I'm confused.

  • ITunes 6 and External Hard Drive issue. Please Help!!

    Hi Gang!
I'm having problems when using iTunes 6 to work with my external HD as my iTunes Music library vault.
Under iTunes Advanced section I have set my Preference to change my music library from my iMac G5 to my external HD. Everything works fine, but everytime I restart my computer, iTunes automaticaly sets the Preferences back to the Music Library folder in the iMac G5 instead of the the external HD. I never had this problem before with other versions of iTunes.
Am I missing something or is there an extra step I should take to having iTunes accept the external HD as my permanent iTunes Music Library holder?
    Thanks for any input.
    Alex

    Hi TP2GO!!!
Thanks for your reply!! You mention that this problem is being caused due to the fact that my external HD is not available at start up. But the driver is always available, since it is always hooked up to my iMac at all times. I've noticed, though, that iTunes starts up at login and maybe system is running it before it runs my external HD (if I follow your logic), possibly causing iTunes to set the iTunes library back to default since it cannot find the external driver where the new library should rest. So, my new question is: how do I disable iTunes from running at start up to try and see if this is what's causing my problem?
Thanks very much indeed for your input!!!!

  • How do I get iTunes to recognize my external, wireless-networked hard drive (Western Digital) during installation and set-up of iTunes?

    Hello,
I'm re-installing iTunes for Windows 7 (64-bit) due to a bug that occured with the iOS7 update.  The Genius Bar recommended that I uninstall and re-install iTunes from scratch.  All of my music is located on a WD external hard drive that's connected wirelessly to my PC.  I didn't have this problem until the iOS update for iphone 5, v.7.0.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I didn't relate this; now iTunes will not install on my PC when pointed to my external, wireless-networked hard drive.  It appears that it doesn't recognize it.

  • Networking a PS3, networked hard drives and iTunes

I would Like to share my iTunes music and my pictures over my network with my PS3, anyone out there done this? If so any Ideas as how I would go about this? I was figuring I would need a networked hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme router… but not sure. Need help… Thanks in advance.

Get a program like PS3MediaServer. You install it on your Mac and it will show up in the PS3 menu under music ,video ,and Photos. You can pick which folders to share from with in PMS. Put your iTunes folder as on of the shares

  • Backup and restoring itunes library from external hard drive?

is there a way to backup and restore my itunes library to external hard drive and not through the internal itunes backup utility cos i have over 20gbs of music and i want to keep my album art and renamed songs etc. because i will be reformating my pc and dont want to go through painful task of manually adding stuff again.

    Try this...
*Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
Grab SyncToy 2.0, a free tool from MS. Use it to create a backup copy of your iTunes library & any other media folders onto another hard drive or network share. After making the initial backup copy use SyncToy to periodically synchronise the backup copy with your library and only the changed files will be copied saving lots of time.
When the time comes to reformat your PC, do a final sync, then open iTunes & deauthorise the PC, reformat & rebuild Windows, copy the backup folders back to the same location as they were previously, install iTunes and it should all work perfectly.

  • Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive contents not appearing in iTunes

I'm running iTunes 10.5.1 on my MacBook which is running OS X 10.6.8
I've got an iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive ( http://tinyurl.com/l8jmaa ) NAS hooked up to my home intranet, and I use it as the master repository for all my music for iTunes, as I've got multiple computers in the house, and the device (with iTunes and DLNA activated) will show up in the "Shared" section of my iTunes source list, and I can view and play all my music from there.
Sometime over the course of the last few iTunes updates, however, this functionality broke, and I'm not sure why.  The device shows up in the "Shared" section still, but when I click on it, iTunes shows a message on its screen that says "Loading "Iomega-0557fc" (yeah yeah, I didn't give my drive a spiffy name, I just stuck with the stock out-of-the-box name) and gives me the horixzontal cady-cane, and the little circle spinner spins away to the right of the device in the source list, but iTunes never actually completes the task of bringing up an index of the drive.
The drive itself is fully functional.  All the settings are proper on it, I can move data on and off from the Finder, I can even drag-and-drop music files from the NAS in the Finder into iTunes and the files will add to playlists and play just fine (I've got "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder..." turned off, so I know they're playing from the NAS) so it's not like there's some kind of malfuction on the NAS itself.  I've also made sure I've got the latest firmware updates and such.
I'm sure I'm not the only one with one of these drives, and I'm hoping someone else has encountered this issue and figured it out!  Any help is appreciated!

Hi , I have similar problem..It was working initially and for some reason it stopped. I device shows up on the SHARED , however when I click it doesnt load the songs..however I am able to stream songs from Iomega NAS via other DLNA clients (ace player etc in ipad)...

Recently, I have been unable to import all of the "songs" or discs from multi-CD operas in itunes to my ipod classic or Seagate network hard drive. Only 1 or 2 discs or 20 or so "songs" out of a  total of 40 - 80 import despite plenty of available space in both devices. When I check itunes, each opera disc with all of the "songs" are listed. Very frustrating! Any suggestions?

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.
