ITunes 10 breaks automator

I have been using automator to import mp4 and acc versions of songs into my itunes library.
Since I upgraded to iTunes 10 last week I now get this:
The Action "Import Audio Files" could not be loaded because the application "iTunes" is the wrong version. Try upgrading the application to version 4.6 or later.
So am I to find iTunes 4.6? Automator 4.6?

There is a problem with the sorting order of the version strings that some of the actions are looking for. MacWorld and MacFixIt have fixes posted.

Unfortunately, it seems that this is a cross-platform problem between iTunes 10.5 and all NAS disks. Shared libraries on network drives worked fine under 10.4.1, but now there is just an endless loading cycle with no error message or time-out. There is a bit more about it in this thread.

How do I stop iTunes from breaking out all the songs in one album into multiple albums when the artist has many collaborators on the different songs, for example Timbaland? I want to just listen to the full album with all the songs, instead of having to play every song separately.

ITunes is breaking my music collection one album at a time

Hi, I have been having serious problems with iTunes for the last few months and I really need help! I have a collection of almost 10,000 songs, but recently iTunes seems to have decided that some of my albums won't work.
Every now and again, I will select an album and click 'Play Album' and nothing will happen. The album artwork will suddenly disappear and no matter which track I select and try to play it will now not work. They also will not work on my iPhone thereafter. If I delete and then attempt to re-add the music (even after a reboot or two) it simply will not add them; however, the tracks will still play in other media players. Also, iTunes will also occasionally simply 'lose' the artwork for random albums - these albums will sometimes also turn out to be 'broken' when I attempt to play them, but sometimes they still work.
Fortunately I have backups of most of my music and when I delete an album which has stopped working and add a backup it will work again (though this process is a bit of a drag). I do not have backups of everything, however, and every now and again I lose an album I cannot replace.
I am generally pretty good with computers, but this problem is flummoxing me. It has only started happening in the last few months. I can't see any link between the albums which 'break' and even though I have reinstalled iTunes several times this does not fix the problem. I suppose I should try a full uninstall and install of iTunes but I don't want to lose my playlists and I have all the settings for my iPhone and its apps saved there.
Please help me guys! I'm at my wit's end!

I wonder if these are MP3 files? iTunes is quite fussy about MP3s and will sometimes not play files that work in other players.
So if they are MP3s, you could try tag validator to see if it finds any problems with the MP3 files that do not play in it iTunes.

There are other MP3 repair utilities around which you can find with Google, but I don't have any specific recommendations.

ITunes 7 breaks "0 Upcoming" Shuffle

My preferred way to use iTunes is to use Shuffle mode with 0 upcoming songs, so that it continuously plays random songs, but if I wish to listen to a particular song next, I can simply drag it into the Party Shuffle playlist.
However, iTunes 7 has suddenly decided that "0 upcoming" songs should only play the current song and not play anymore. It has removed all functionality from this option. Does anybody here know of a suitable workaround?

Thanks for your reply Rob... but your technique actually requires more clicks/mouse movements if I want to add an entire album, or worse... multiple albums! (which is what I regularly do).
I'm afraid I still disagree with this change of behaviour in iTunes 7, as I see no good reason to break the previous functionality in this way. Do you know if this change was a calculated one, or if it happened by mistake? If it is a mistake... any chance of some internal campaigning to get the old behaviour back?

Wrecking Ball iTunes LP breaks if you change the year metadata

I haven't ever had this problem before but ... the new Springsteen iTunes LP that comes with the album does not have the album year in the date. All of the songs correctly have 2012 in their metadata. When you sort songs in iTunes by Album by Artist/Year the album shows up incorrectly before all other albums because they have a date listed and the iTunes LP doesn't. Using the LP works fine at this point. I can play any of the songs through the LP interface. However, to clean up the data and have the album appear in sorted lists correctly, I edited the metadata by putting the year 2012 in the appropriate field. This then breaks the LP. I can no longer play any song except for track 4 "Jack of All Trades". No matter which song I choose, this is the one that plays. Very weird that it is the 4th track. If I re-edit the LP file and delete the year, leaving the field blank, all works fine. Anybody else have this behavior? This is happening both on my Mac and a PC.

Opening iTunes using an Automator script

I'd been using Automator in conjunction with iCal to open streaming audio in iTunes v 9.x. Since upgrading to iTunes v 10, the Automator script won't work. I get the error message "The action "Get Specified iTunes Items' could not be loaded because the application iTunes is the wrong version. Try upgrading the application to version 4.6 or later" Anyone have a clue as to what's wrong, and how to fix it?

Okay. And both of those links acknowledges there is a problem and offer at least a temporary solution.
Knowing that the conflict is between Automator and iTunes 10, the question becomes: Doesn't Apple test new versions of its software with ITS OWN other apps before release?
I imagine they do but it's kinda irrelevant. If it doesn't work correctly, it doesn't work correctly.

ITunes won't automically update to IOS 5 when connecting to iPod Touch

I followed the directions to connect my iPod to iTunes and it won't initiate the upgrade to IOS 5. When I clicked on the check for updates button, I get a message that I am current. Being that I am on version 4.2.7 I find that hard to believe. I also tried a Manual download of IOS 5 and that did not work either.

Do you mean iOS 4.2.1? If so, it means you likely have a 2G iPod Touch, which can only go as high as iOS 4.2.1. See this article to help you determine what generation of your iPod Touch is.

Mountain Lion brings bugs and breaks Automator Services

Just love this Automator tool, been using it to make my Finder dance for a while now. My fresh install (Erase/USB) of Mountain Lion seems to be reproducibly broken for adding Services, and also appears to have a bug for editing existing Services...
My steps to failure were as follows:
Open Automator
Select and choose "Service" to create a new service
Find/drag "Get Selected Finder Items" to the service pane
Find/drag "Launch Application" to the service pane
Select the desired program/application (in this case a AppleScript.app)
Change the "Service receives selected" to "Files or Folders", and change "in" to "Finder"
Select the "Workflow" -> "Run" option to verify that the workflow actually works… (Note: my Applescript applicaiton needs me to actually select a image file in Finder to properly operate... But it works just fine in this step).
Save the new Automator's service workflow (saves to ~/Library/Services as "Convert selected image" - (actually, any name produces the same failure mode.
Close the new workflow document in Automator
Verify that the Service exists (is installed) in "~/Library/Services/Convert selected image.workflow"
Open a new Finder window,
Ctl-Click on any file or folder, select the Services fly-out context menu: BROKEN: The expected Finder context service text of "Convert selected image" is not available.
Verify that the Service exists (is installed) in "~/Library/Services/Convert selected image.workflow"
Go back to Automator, select "File" -> "Open Recent"
Select the recent "Convert selected image" file, up pops a new "Service Installer" dialog
Selecting "Open with Automator" works as expected, the file opens in Automator
Selecting "Cancel" works as expected, nothing happens
Selecting "Install" in the "Service Installer" dialog pops-up a new dialog warning that the service is already installed, asking if we want to replace it (warning: replacing will overwrite the current file!)
Selecting "Cancel" works as expected, nothing happens
Selecting "Replace" pops-up a funky new dialog that warns "Installation failed" because: "Convert selected image.workflow couldn't be moved to "Services" because either the former doesn't exist, or the folder containing the latter does't exist". Two options are offered: "Open with Automator" or "Done"
BUG: Selecting "Open with Automator" fails as the "Replace" option in step 21 has DELETED the workflow from the ~/Library/Services folder and it no longer exists…
Selecting the only remaining option of "Done" returns the duped user to the now empty and lonely Automator.
Perhaps it's just me (or solar flares)... Any ideas on how to get my Mountain Lion's malfunctioning (and lonely) Automator Services working again ?

For Example, When I enter the actions:
Action 1. Get specified Finder Items
(Two excel Files in the list)
Action 2. Move Finder Items to Trash
Automator moves the two excel files, AND other files previously created in the workflow to the trash.
That is new to me.

Safari 4 breaks Automator apps

MBPro 10.5.7 Safari 4.0.2 Automator 2.0.3
Simple case: Apple's own "Tab Left", "Tab Right" speakable commands no longer work. They worked fine with Safari 3.x.x These files are located in ~/Library/Speech/Speakable Items/Application Speakable Items/Safari.
Other case: Every day I have a primary Safari window with several tabs. I had an Automator "Watch Me Do" app for this repetitive setup. It worked fine in Safari 3.x.x but fails in the middle with Safari 4. I have tried re-creating the "Watch Me Do" using Safari 4 but get the same (non) result.
Any suggestions?

In your second case do you mean that you are opening the same web pages every day in a series of tabs? If so that should still work. I've been doing that almost every day. Here's my current workflow that works with Safari. I am currently running 4.0.3 but it works with the earlier version as well.
1. Get Specified URLs
2. Display Webpages in Tabs.
To make this work use this version of the Display webpages in tabs action http://raoli.com/projects/automator/ Also make sure that you have tabbed browsing enabled in Safari.

ITunes is breaking up my albums

Importing CD's to iTunes 7.7
Now all of a sudden all albums have been broken up & each songs is listed individually.
I have used Time Machine but still get the same results.Wondering if it has something to do with
view options.Did I check/uncheck something I wasnt supposed to?
Is there a way to add attachments,see better what I'm talking about.

In your main iTunes library (click on 'Music', in the left menu) you can view your music by song/artist/album/etc. simply by highlighting the header of the info you wish to sort it by.
If you have a different category you wish to add to your library go to:
iTunes (menu bar) > View > View Options (at bottom) > and check off the options you wish to see in your library. Don't forget to save.

Itunes is breaking up my files

All of the music on my computer is whole albums...I have a group name with albums inside of it then the songs in the album folder...like Boston has Boston, Don't Look Back, and Third Stage and Third Stage has Amanda, We're Ready, Cool The Engines, My Destination, etc...When I load the folder Boston onto Itunes...I get Boston as a whole album...but Third Stage has Amanda and We're Ready in one album and then Cool The Engines by itself and My Destination by itself, I have 80 gb of music on my pc so when I load it all there is a big mess. I don't want to put it on my ipod this way I want to be able to just play an album and get the whole thing...any help anyone PLEASE

ITunes match breaks music app on iPhone 4

I've had iTunes Match for about a month and my iPhone 4 music app has been sluggish throughout. Today when I tried to play any music on the phone it refused, I can't play anything. I pick an album, press play and nothing happens - it just stays stuck on zero minutes of the song. So I've had to turn iTunes Match off. It's very disappointing.
I should add that I have a friend who has an iPhone 4S and he has no sluggishness problems, perhaps the iPhone 4 can't handle Match?

I've just discovered my Mac has accumulated 56 crash reports for the Music App this year! I have an iPhone 4 and the iTunes Match service makes the whole phone sluggish.
Did you ever find a solution?

ITunes keeps breaking up my albums

I'm new to using itunes so bare with me. I've noticed that some cds that I've uploaded are broken up when I view them under MyMusic. Meaning 11 out of 12 tracks will be listed along with the album but track 12 will have a listing all by it's self. Is there a way I can merge these or even prevent itunes from doing this? Thanks!

By default the library is sorted by artist. So if a track has a different artist from other tracks on the album it will go into a different folder. One way around this is to check "Part of a compilation" in the Info tab of all of the tracks on the album. iTunes will then place (or move) the album to the "Compilations" folder and keep the album tracks together.

Latest iTunes update breaks iTunes Radio

Has anyone tried to use Featured Stations on iTunes Radio? The latest update has broken this on both my iMac and MacBook Pro. Both running news Yosemite and iTunes. I'm able to play NPR Radio, but all else has failed. I've logged out, and logged back in. Restarted and still no iTunes Radio on Featured Stations. I even created my stations and still no sound.

It's working now. Must have been an issue with Apple regarding iTunes radio.
