ITunes 10 forgets podcast playback position after Mac restart

iTunes 10 forgets playback position of podcasts (but does remember they have been played, but not finished so are not auto-deleted, thankfully) after I just restart my Mac, but not after I quit and relaunch iTunes. Everything was fine in iTunes 9, but once I installed 10 playback positions are totally forgotten after my Mac is turned off. Weird, huh? Why are they not being lost if I just restart the app as well?
No other app's prefs are are affected. Only iTunes 10 is bugged.

Here's a wrinkle: I still have iTunes 9 (9.2 or whatever the latest version is), not iTunes 10, and I had a similar problem today. Could this be related?
Having listened to a bunch of podcasts on my iPhone, I synced with my iBook, which put those same podcasts back on to my iPhone, showing as either unplayed or partially-played, depending on their status the LAST time I synced, which was probably 3 or more days ago. No new podcasts were added.
All the posts on here seem to be from the last week, so I wonder if this problem has to do not with iTunes 10, but with the iOS firmware. I know there was a recent firmware update that I installed on my iPhone 3G.
Well I've not got any iOS devices, just an 80GB iPod classic and second gen-shuffle. Yet this issue arose for me after updating to iTunes 10 shrug

  • Forgetting playback position after using timer to stop playing

Prior to updating to ios 8 I would set the timer on the clock app to stop playing my music/audiobook after a set amount of time. Then in the morning, I could turn on the music app again and continue playing the album or audiobook from where it had stopped.
Since the update it doesn't seem to be remembering the playback position, however I only have this problem when I've used the timer. If I manually pause the song, then it remembers as "now playing". I've been scouring the internet and no one else seems to be experiencing this. I updated to 8.1 and I'm still having this problem. I went into itunes and checked Get Info --> Options --> Remember playback position.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem using Apple's Music and Clock apps on iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.  I don't know why this changed, as I had been using this function for years on previous iPhones / iOS to play audio-books at night, and then easily find the place where I dozed off the next night.
While I try to keep the array of apps on my phone limited to Apple originals, this problem led me to explore. And I found that 2 free apps - 1. Music Timer and 2. Beat - that allow me to do what I have always done previously with the Apple apps. That is, Beat plays a track until turned off by Music Timer, and then Beat resumes playing where it stopped the next evening. Read the on-screen directions before using these apps, and it is then simple.
I like the Beat interface a lot too, although you need to adjust to the fine tuning system that allows you to move backwards and forwards along a track. It has a clever circle system that requires holding the touch on the screen for a second or two before it activates. Much nicer then Apples Music app.

How to make iTunes automatically add new tracks to the "remember playback position" ?

    Hi emcea
In iTunes list , select the song you want to set, Ctrl-click on it, > Get Info, > Select the "Options" tab, and there set the time to begin or to stop playing (don't forget to check related cases-You also have possibility to check the case related to playing position

  • ITunes does not sync playback position between computers

I have a Macbook (10.7) and a Mac Pro (10.8). The same audiobook on both but iTunes on the Macbook doesn't seem to remember where I left off when I was listening on the Pro. I resisted upgrading from 10.6 for a long time but isn't icloud supposed to do this?! I can't find any settings that control this and, yes, the audiobook is set to "remember playback position"
    Thanks for your help!

    Beast,
This is similar to my question, however I'm talking songs, not audio books, here.
How is it possible to have different "remember playback position" settings for different devices using the same iTunes library?
The example is that the iPod I connect to my car audio always (annoyingly) starts playing the same song whenever the iPod is switched on. I want to use the "remember playback position" setting to to stop this, and instead start playing the song from where it left off previously. I assume I could use a batch change on iTunes to accomplish this. However, I wouldn't want that setting used for other devices.
    Thoughts?

  • My appleTV does not remember podcast playback position

Is anyone else finding that video podcasts are not remembering their playback position despite standard movies remembering theirs?  Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. Video podcasts remember playback position. Audio podcasts do not. Major bug.

  • Music app doesn't remember last title or playback position after upgrading to iOS 8

    Hi!
Since upgrading to iOS 8 (and now 8.1) Apples music app on the iPhone 6 won't remember which title it was playing or the playback position.
I use to listen to music or audiobooks before going to sleep and I always set the timer to stop playing after some time. But when I get up in the morning and open the app again - it starts from scratch. I have to search for the title again and guess the time where I left off. This is really annoying and it worked just great in iOS 7.
    Anyone having the same problems?

I went to the apple store to try to see if they could fix my i-pod. They were not aware of this problem. Did not know if any work around.  Said they would report it and it would be fixed with one of the next upgrades.  Did suggest I delete all books and music on my i-pod, since it is backed up on my computer and reload it.  That this may work...it did not.

  • IPod Nano 5th gen locks up, losing podcast playback positions.

My 5th gen iPod nano has been randomly locking up when playing audio.  I will start listening to either music or podcasts, and then when I go to pause it after a while I can't do anything.  The audio will still be playing, but I cannot pause it, adjust the volume, etc.  The screen is also shut off when that happens, and I need to do a reset to do anything.  I've been searching online and haven't come across anything that helps.  I have a warrenty for it, but I am hesitant to send it in because I likely won't be able to get another 5th for what I paid originally.  Has anyone had any problems like this, or know of any way to fix this?  It is completely random, it started this summer, and would be fine for a while, then I would have it happen multiple times in a few days, then it can be fine for a while.  Also, this may or may not be related, but when I sync it to my PC it will lose my position on podcasts, ones that I have finished and should be removed are set to unplayed, and some that I am in the middle of will also be set to unplayed.  I haven't been able to come across anything that helps on this either, I'm not sure if it is my iPod or just something with iTunes.

Yes, I've tried that a few times, it didn't seem to help, and it gave me a terrible time, I had to restore it multiple times, because I would do that, then it would lock up while syncing everything back onto it, then I would have to try restore it again, and finally I was able to get the stuff back on it, but it has locked up while playing since I did that.

  • Trackpad will not select user after Mac restart

Trackpad works fine normally but after restart of Mac, will not click on user (cursor moves over it) so I have to use a mouse to click & enter password.  All software is up to date.  Any ideas.

The following was suggested on another thread but I've tried it & it doesn't solve the issue:
System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click
    Tap to click
    Secondary click
Uncheck the boxes to it  if they are checked and recheck them back.
    Any other ideas?

  • AppleTV not updating iTunes playback position

I have some long MP4 audio files, which have "Remember Playback Position" toggled on.
My iPod plays them, when I stop listening, it remembers the position. When I sync it with iTunes, it updates iTunes with the new playback position.
On playing the same file on my Apple TV, the file starts playing in the correct (remembered) place. However on stopping the file, and resyncing the Apple TV with iTunes, it fails to update iTunes with the new "remembered" position.
    Is this repeatable by others?

I listen to long mp3 files with remember playback position set. It does not work when I sync to the Apple TV, but if I stream, iTunes does keep track of where I left off. So I can listen through the ATV, then sync to the nano and keep going where it left off when listening to the ATV via streaming.
I wish sync would remember but as of now it does not.

  • Audiobook Not Remembering Playback Position

In iTunes 9.2, when marked as "Audiobook" itunes no longer remembers playback position. Both Playback position and skip when shuffling are grayed out, however they aren't checked. I put the files back in as "music: and manually checked "remember playback" and it worked fine.
Anyone else run into this? I have tried it on home and work computer.

Never mind, figured it out. You have to select all the files, cannot change it per individual file.

  • Is there a way to auto remember playback position?

When I drop an MP4 into iTunes, I have to right click, get info and select to remember playback position...since I might listen to this track in several sessions. Is there way to have all MP4s I drop into iTunes select to remember playback position?

nope. there is, however a quicker way to do it than the individual itunes info window. you can select everything that you want to change. then open the get info window. go to the Options tab. check the box that says Remember Position, then go to the menu just to the right and choose the desired setting. click ok. this will change the setting for all the tracks at once instead of just one at a time.

  • ITunes 7.0 ignoring "Remember playback position"

I've been encountering an issue where iTunes 7.0 is ignoring last marked playback position on files with "Remember playback position" set. The files in question are on my iPod. I can't put my finger on it, but I have for certain encountered this anomaly more than three times, with different files (all are mp3 podcasts from different sources). Instead of resuming playback where I left off, it begins playback starting at the beginning of the file.
Has anyone else been encountering this? If so, is there any workaround for this or should it be placed on top of the growing heap of iTunes 7.0 bugs?
    2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

So glad to at least find others that are having this problem. It's driving me crazy! I wish I had a fix, but even the Apple reps at MacWorld didn't have a solution.
This happened when I upgraded to iTunes 7. My "Remember Playback Position" is checked but greyed out.
Possibly related, when I first disconnect the iPod, the audiobooks show up inside the top level "Audiobooks" category. If I listen to one of them, then go listen to a song, then go back to the Audiobooks category, the books are now gone! I can get to them by browsing through Artists but it's definitely not the expected behavior.

  • Is the iPod touch 4g supposed to remember playback positions reached in iTunes?

    Mine doesn't.
Playback position appears to be one-way - iPod to iTunes.
I've stopped listening to large files (long podcasts, audiobooks) in iTunes because I have to manually return to the same position after my iPod is disconnected from iTunes.
My old iPod classic doesn't have the problem - so I'm assuming this is a software issue.
    Thanks

The answer according to the local Apple Genius bar is - iTunes doesn't send last playback position to the iPod touch device.
