ITunes 10 has trouble importing CDs

Ever since iTunes updated to 10.0, it seemingly imports from CDs only when it feels like it. CDs are recogonized in all drives (I have three), but it will only download the songs occasionaly. Diagnostics says that I have audio CD in the drive, but it just won't import. I have tried all of the solutions I could find on the Apple web sites, but no luck. Everytime Apple send an update I hope the problem will be fixed, but nothing. Anyone else having similar issues? Anyone have a fix?

This is what the diagnostics tells me:

• Trouble importing CDs

I'm suddenly having trouble importing CDs. The first minute of the first song will import, and then all the rest are "checked off" but there's no actual content in the library. I've done the CD diagnostics for both my CD drives with no problem found. I've installed the latest drivers from the Dell website. I'm holding out until a last resort before that change-the-registry business. This has all worked perfectly for the past year, and now, suddenly, there's an issue. Any other thoughts before I get enough nerve to try the "filters" instructions??

You can always rip them using Windows Media Player and then add them to your itunes library.
Just make sure to change the WMP default import settings, first.

• ITunes Encountering Problems When Importing CDs

Since I allowed an iTunes update about a month ago (?), I've been having problems importing certain (apparently random) CDs. I import a lot of books on CD, and many times "iTunes encounters a problem and has to shut down." Not always. For example, the book I'm trying to import this afternoon worked fine on the first disc, but not at all on the second. I got the shutdown message after only a few seconds. I always join the tracks before importing.
Earlier today, I was having trouble with a number of discs, but it would occur when the import was much further along. I thought I'd figured out a workaround -- instead of joining all the tracks on the CD, I joined them into two sets, each half the size of the full CD. Then imported them one at a time. Worked like a charm for about 5 discs. Then I started importing a new book, thought I'd get brave and try to import a whole CD. Worked like a charm on CD #1. Then I got to #2, and not only did it only work for a few seconds before shutting down iTunes when they were all joined together, when I tried my workaround, that didn't work either.
I'm running iTunes 6.0.1.3, with CD Driver 2.0.4.3 and CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.2.
I ran CD diagnostics on the disc I'm currently having trouble with. Here are the results:

Well, thanks for all the help, folks.
After playing around with every permutation I could think of under preferences\advanced\importing, in desparation (because the problem kept getting worse - to the point that I couldn't import any joined tracks at all) I allowed a version update to 6.0.4.2.

• Trouble Importing CDs and syncing with iCloud

I'm having some difficulty when importing tracks from CD's purchased into my iCloud account. I've noticed some CDs appear to sync to iCloud and others do not. Why is this happening? They are all legitimately purchased CDs that I would like to sync to iCloud. Is syncing to iCloud limited to only music purchased through iTunes?
Any idea what's causing this or how to import that music?
thanks!

I too have this problem. My settings are exactly the same as they were prior to subscribing to iTunes Match -- that is, "Import using AAC Encoder" and "Setting iTunes Plus".
When my library was adapted to iTunes Match, all the CD imported files were uploaded to the cloud without any issues. Since then, I've had trouble finding new iTune Store purchases on my devices as well as finding the imported files from my CD's.
iTunes seems to process the import after I insert a CD. iTunes displays the import progress and a green check mark once the file is completed. I can listen to the music; but, cannot transfer to a playlist (cloud or non-cloud). The files are not in my library.
Is this a bug in iTunes or is there an added function that I'm skipping?

• ITunes 10 Will not Import CDs

I just discovered that iTunes 10 will not import audio CDs. Once you insert the CD and iTunes launches, the CD disappears from the desktop. It is not there in the finder window nor in the iTunes window. This occured on all three Macs I tried it on and occurred with about four different audio CDs.
Apple Technical Support people duplicated the problem on their Macs and have referred this to engineering. If you plan on importing audio CDs in the near future I suggest not installing iTunes 10 now.

• Updated iPhone / iTunes and now cannot Import CDs

OS: Win7 Home Premium
iTunes: 10.1.0.56
Yesterday I decided to take the plunge and started importing my CD collection. About 30 CDs in I decided to take a break. I plugged in my iPhone and hit the update button in iTunes. (I’m not sure if I got the iPhone update and/or Itunes + quicktime update.) At any rate, when I went back to importing CDs nothing would import. I’ve tried about 5 different CDs, but each gets a version of this error, “Error occurred while converting the file [blah blah blah]. The disk could not be read from or written to.”
I can play CDs using iTunes. I can play previously imported CDs using iTunes. But now I cannot import CDs.

Its always the first song of the CD as I try to import it. I can play from the CD without any problem. However, when I click 'Import CD' I get the following type of error, "Error occurred while converting teh file 'Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro, K 492 - - Overture'. The disk could not be read from or written to.
I'm trying to save to a network folder. I'm not sure what the path is or how to find it again in iTunes.

• Having trouble importing CDs

i am currently tackling the issue of my itunes not having AAC encoder under its importing preferences when i remembered it was the reason i had to import all my CDs under the apple lossless format. (this takes up so much room although the songs are good quality)
it doesnt look like i'm going to have much sucess with getting AAC onto my itunes and so i tried to convert my songs to mp3 but it came up with an unknown error [-223].
I believe i have a problem with Quicktime and thats the reason i a) dont have AAC as an importing option and b)have to import CDs as apple lossless. i have tried uninstalling/reinstalling both itunes and quicktim and downloading quicktime standalone but have had no sucess.
any help would be so greatly appriciated.

• Error messages says I need to reinstall itunes to burn or import CDs

When I start itunes I get a message that says itunes was not installed properly and if I want to burn or import CDs I need to reinstall itunes. I haven't tried burning any CDs but itunes imports CDs just fine. Everything else seems to work OK. I'm using itunes on a Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit machine. What's up?

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here. (Use your Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut to paste.)

• ITunes stops working when importing CDs

I insert a CD, try to import the tracks. Itunes starts to work on the first track. Just as import of the first track reaches its conclusion a message pops up to say that iTunes has stopped working. "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I receive no notification.
I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled, but the problem continues.
Anyone have any ideas as to the cause – and a work-around to solve this problem?

hello Florida!
it is an itunes has encountered an error.
does your PC have dual cores or dual processors? if so, there's a hyperthreading problem which has been producing that error message when importing. try Otto's trick here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=826742&ft=y&#826742
(the same issue underwrites the podcast problem Otto is talking about, and the same technique has been working for importing crashes.)

• ITunes takes hours to import CDs and doesn't playback properly

I recently bought four CDs (all by the same artist) and only one of the four will import to iTunes. The first CD imported in about five minutes, and there were no problems.
Despite iTunes still recognising the track titles and other info, the other three CDs took literally hours each to import just the first track, and when I tried to play them back, the music was practically inaudible because there was some kind of strange white noise over the top.
I have checked the discs and they're all clean, and none of them are pirated either, so I'm really confused as to what could be causing the problem. I couldn't see anybody else having this exact problem so I'm not entirely sure what to do about it! Any help would be really appreciated!

First of all - songs do go to the Music app for playing on the iPad - not iTunes. Look in the Music app. If it's not there - this may help ....
When you sync the iPad with iTunes - you have to select the music to sync within the Music Tab of iTunes. the Sync Music Heading must be checked and the albums, artists, playlists, etc must be selected as well in order to sync.
These kb articles should be of some help. It works the same way on the iPad.

• ITunes 10.5 plays & imports CDs with crackling/distortion

Hi all,
When I try to play or import a CD, I get a horrible crackling/distorted sound, and the music is barely audible underneath it. This started happening since I upgraded to iTunes when I installed iOS 5 on my iPhone. The crackling happens either when listening to the CD, or when listening to a track I have recently imported from the CD.
It seems the new version of iTunes is unable to communicate with my CD drive properly. Apple, what have you changed in the new version?!
Is anyone else having this problem?
At the minute I can get around the problem by importing my tracks into Windows Media Player and then moving them into my iTunes library...
What this is not
It's not a playback/sound drivers issue. All the existing tracks in my libary play just fine, including tracks that I imported with the previous version of iTunes. Other applications and music players are playing audio just fine too.
It's not an issue with my CD being damaged. The CD plays and imports perfectly in Windows Media Player and other players. Also, I've tried CDs which were working just fine with the previous version of iTunes, and they're now playing all crackly.
It's not an issue with my installation. I've tried removing all Apple software from my PC, restarting, and reinstalling it all - to no avail...
My details
Samsung R60 laptop.
Windows Vista (arggh, I know)
iTunes 10.5.0.142
If you've had anything similar please reply!
Thanks

Same problem here with 10.5.1. I even connected a new cd drive and it's still not working properly.
Here is one work around that appears to temporarily fix the issue:
1) Restart Itunes
2) Change setting to "show cd"
3) Right click to copy
The above worked for me.

• Lost Previous Itunes Music when I imported CDs

I just cleaned out and organized my itunes which I store on an external harddrive. I imported a few cds this morning (without the harddrive plugged in) and now I only have the cd's in my intunes. How do I get back the 2,000+ other songs...
Also, I moved all the CD imports into the Itunes on my external and I even clicked on a previous Itunes song and it sends it into Itunes like It's the first time It's being added! Argh. I really don't want to have to resubmit all the metadata I fixed/added to those songs.
If anyone can understand my confusing request and help me I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks

Hello pippenmcgee,
when you imported the CD this morning without the external drive plugged in, iTunes probably created a brandnew iTunes Library.
So what you need to do is to reconnect your external drive and
If iTunes is open, quit it.
Hold down the Option key while you open iTunes.
In the window that appears, click "Choose Library" and select your old library.
Then import your CD again and delete the library you accidentally created this morning. It will probably be located in your Music Folder.

• IMovie 09 has trouble importing large video files from my JVC HD-40. I am trying to edit files such as these in 09. What should I do? Would buying iMovie 2011 help? I am shooting AVCHD files instead of the other mpeg2 file format.

Hi,
I am new into the Apple Community. I have a camcorder known as the JVC GZ-HD40 US and I currently am trying to use iMovie 2009 to edit my movies. With my camcorder, I have the choice to use two different video formats: AVCHD or Mpeg2. All my videos are shot in the AVCHD (HD) file format. This camcorder also has a 120 G Hard Drive built into it. When I plug in the camcorder through USB to my MacPro, the Hard Drive of the camcorder shows up as a icon on the desktop. Many of my video clips are at least thirty minutes in length, inside the camcorder. When I try to import in iMovie my video files, it only imports around ten minutes of the video and skips to the end of the clip. I would greatly prefer to use my MacPro desktop to edit movies instead of my Windows 7 computer which seems to work fine. Is there a solution to this problem? Would the new iMovie 2011 application solve this problem? I also have the Final Cut Express to work with, and also, can't get it to work. What should I try doing?

Hi all,
I have the exact same problem. I've just been to Thailand with my girlfriend, and we recorded a lot of stuff with my brand new Sony HD camcorder. And whenever the we ran out of camcorder memory we just emptied everything onto my HP laptop using the supplied Sony software, which produced m2ts files. When we got home, I realized that my Mac Pro/iMovie09 was not able to import this format. What a huge disappointment! Especially considering the fact that I just bought my mac back in March (my first mac ever) only for video editing and music composing (no problems with music composing, however!).
Well, I needed a solution, so last week I just bought the Voltaic HD converting software (35$), and it works great. No problems. Only thing is that my Mac Pro (quad intel core) had to work 24 hours a day for four straight days/nights in order to finish the converting job - resulting in 434 GB worth of mov-files. This is no problem as such, and the quality is great. BUT it seems rather stupid that this converting has to take place. If I use Sony Vegas on my PC, it works out of the box with my original m2ts-files. And I would really appreciate if Apple would implement a simple import function of m2ts-files in their software - one that would (if necessary) automatically convert the files to mov. Or even better: would work natively with the m2ts-files.
Best,

• Flash CS 6 has trouble importing .wav files

Not sure what's up with that but it does. Very CLEARLY a bug. If I drag the files onto the Library, it will give an error for each file but then once it's imported each one it will then ask me if I want to overright it and then reimport it again. The audio is then ruined and can not be used. It has been garbled to sound like static.
If I import them one by one, it does the same thing. If I try to import them all at once the program crashes.
The .wav files play fine in any other program so it's not the files themselves. It is also repeatable.
The ONLY thing that works is to batch convert them all to aif files via the Media Encoder but it's asinine to think that I have to do that by default each time.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit with 8 gb of memory and an Intel Xeon CPU at 2.8 ghz

Solved my own problem! In case anyone searches for this issue, the error happens when you save out an Audition file and select "Include markers and other metadata" at the bottom which crashes the import every time for me. Unchecking that stupid thing fixes the import error. It is repeatable on multiple computers in our office as well so it is indeed a fix.

• Trouble importing since changing iTunes folder destination

Hi,
I have asked everyone I know about this problem and nobody seems to know what to do, please help...
I previously ran iTunes on my PC Laptop using an external hard drive to store all my music on and thus had the itunes music folder destination set to the hard drive.
Since the laptop died, I now have a macbook and got a new ipod to start over. The external hard drive with all my music works ok with the macbook.
I initially imported a couple of CDs into my itunes straight onto the macbook when the ext drive was playing up and i was desperate for some music for my ipod, once i got the hard drive working again i hooked it up and changed the itunes music destination folder to the hard drive and left it transferring my entire library back into itunes overnight.
This worked fine but now itunes wont let me import cds with the destination set to the hard drive (yes, the hard drive is on and connected when attempting this).
Sorry this is such an essay but i didnt know how else to explain the problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I am becoming desperate.
Thanks
Tom

Change the location of the library in the Preferences. This tells iTunes where new music that you add will go, but it won't move your existing music there.
Back in iTunes, use the Consolidate Library option. This will copy all the music currently in iTunes to the new Library location, along with organizing it and renaming it and such. Once this is done, you can check that the music is there, and then delete the old location.
Few things:
-There's a couple of files that live in My Music\iTunes. These are an ITL and an XML file. These cannot be moved. They contain all the information about what's in your iTunes library.
-If you still want to move them, use TweakUI to change the location of your My Music folder to somewhere that won't get copied to the server. Then move/copy the library files to that new location.
