ITunes 10 upgrade makes airtunes volume too loud even at minimum setting

I just updated to iTunes 10 this morning and love the interface and most of what is has to offer. I have, however, encountered an issue with the volume when streaming my music through Airtunes (or Airplay now) and my Airport Express to external speakers. I have an Express set up in my son's room and hooked up to a pair of computer speakers via a stero-mini to stereo-mini. Before the update the volume adjustment worked fine but after updating to iTunes 10 even the minimum volume is too loud for the white noise we put on to help him sleep. If you have ever had a fussy infant you understand that this is a HUGE problem. I've read the forums and come up with nothing. I know that I can manually change the master volume of the sleep sounds (get info on specific track and change master volume) but that's a ridiculous work-around. I've resorted to using Airfoil (an excellent program by the way) because I can't get Airplay to work right. All of the setting are there for it to be a real hit (individual volume settings for each set of external speakers - I have 2 airport express units) but they just DON'T WORK. What a shame that after an update I have to resort to a 3rd party program. I hope Apple hears this and updates very soon or the folks at Airfoil are going to be getting a lot of business very soon. Next post is at Engadget and Mashable
cool. please let me know if you've found a setting that I don't know about.
thx.

iTunes 10 allows each AirTunes (AirPlay) zone to have a separate volume. Try selecting "Multiple Speakers" in the "AirPlay" tab and adjust the volume from there. Also make sure the "Preferences" settings are set to allow for remote volume to be set.

  • Airtunes volume (too loud!)

    Here's the story:
I like to sit around the room and work on the Powerbook wire-free. So I'm listening to my music over AirTunes. I keep the Powerbook volume at 100%, and turn iTunes down to about 20% volume, because music coming 100% out of my AirPort speakers (which I'm too lazy to change the volume on) is just too loud.
Whenever I close iTunes with the AirTunes volume set to 20%, and reopen it, the volume is back up at 100%. I (of course) don't notice, start playing music, and wake up everyone in the neighborhood. I'm pretty sure this didn't happen before 10.4.4, because it's been a huge irritation the past few days, and I've never noticed it before.
Did I break something? Is there any way I can force iTunes to remember what I had the volume set at?

    See this discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1524578
The above discussion is concerned with iTunes volume problems after waking the computer. Does your problem occur only after relaunching iTunes without having restarted or awakened your computer? Which version of iTunes are you using?

  • LG Cosmos 2 - volume is too loud even on lowest setting

Hi, I recently got the LG Cosmos 2 and so far I'm fairly pleased with it. The only thing that bothers me is that the volume is very loud even when I set it to the lowest setting. This applies to both the external speaker volume and the headphones volume when playing ringtones and music.
I'm just wondering if this is normal and if there is something I can do to lower it down even further.

I found a great solution this afternoon, but this will be of use only for ringtones that you've added to the phone because unfortunately most of the time the phone's own ringtones are locked due to either Verizon's rules and/or the rules of the phone manufacturer.
One of the ways of adjusting the volume is a program called Replay Gain. Perhaps analogous to the many versions of Linux, other software writers have implemented Replay Gain in different ways. Each implementation has differing advantages and disadvantages.
My interpretation is that these versions fall under one of two categories:
In the first category, the program writes the information about the volume change to either an APE tag or an ID3 tag, and the music player reads the information in the tag to determine what volume to use. The disadvantage is that this is not a universal solution because the music player used needs to be able to recognize these tags; otherwise, that tag information means nothing to that music player and the volume will be played at its original level.
The program I used today called MP3Gain falls in the second category. Programs in this second category alter the audio file, BUT they don't alter the audio in any way other than its volume; to keep this post shorter, see the next post for greater detail about this alteration. MP3Gain in addition writes information about the volume change and about what the original volume was in an APE tag if you wish to use MP3Gain to undo the volume change. If I did a poor job of summarizing that, there is a lot of great information out there about MP3Gain if you do a google search.
I downloaded MP3Gain from here (link). While some of the various implementations of Replay Gain can be used on more than one audio format, MP3Gain can be used only on MP3 files.
    step 1:
add the mp3 ringtones to MP3Gain and click the button "Track Analysis". The information that's important to us for our use is the number that is now in the column "Volume" which is a measurement in db. If the button says "Album Analysis", click the down arrow next to it and select "Track Analysis"
    step 2:
At the top where you see "Target 'Normal' Volume", enter the volume that you want the mp3 ringtone changed to. Personally, a value of 91 puts me in the ballpark. If that's not low enough or not high enough, then you can just repeat these steps and apply a different value.
    step 3:
Click the button "Track Gain" since I want my several mp3 ringtones to have an identical volume. If the button says "Album Gain" or "Constant Gain", click the down arrow next to it to select "Track Gain". MP3Gain's help file has excellent information about the difference between "Track Gain" and "Album Gain". I don't understand yet what "Constant Gain" is.
    Step 4:
    You're done.
I've read that older music players would not ignore the APE tag and would instead get confused by the presence of the APE tag and interpret it as audible noise. Our two models of Verizon non-smartphones don't seem to have any problems with the tags being left in. If by an unlikely chance either your phone or your music player plays the mp3 file with noise that wasn't there before, then you can turn off the use of the APE tag by choosing "Options" --> "Tags" --> "Ignore (do not read or write tags)". After turning this off you can still restore the volume to its original value if you had made a note of the original value when you clicked the "Track Analysis" button. Or just keep an unaltered backup copy of the mp3 ringtone.

  • Windows 7 boot camp audio...too loud, even after fix

I've just recently upgraded to Windows 7 (32-bit) and also updated to Boot Camp 4.0 as well.
Once the Boot Camp update finished, the audio was scratchy and distorted. Fortunately I've installed the most recent version of Realtek HD Audio drivers.
The sound just gets clearer and however it gets too darn loud even it's on the middle volume. I've looked upon the sound manager from Realtek drivers but there isn't any advanced sound controls to keep the sound low and balanced.
Does anybody happened to this before and give me some good solution so to make the sound as balanced as possible?
By the way, it happened to me before when I was running Windows XP SP3 under the previous Boot Camp version. Then I've discovered the advanced controls to get the sound low and balanced and it worked like a charm! I wonder if I could do the same thing on Windows 7?

Just so you're aware dude this is a common issue with those running any version of Windows!! lol

  • Volume gain in Windows 7 64 bit is very loud even at lowest setting

Under Windows 7 64 bit, the volume is extremely high even at the lowest Windows volume setting (the one above mute).  It's hard to get lower volume sound; it either is loud or none at all.  Is this a driver issue?  Or is there a gain setting I can use to adjust this?
    Thanks.
    iMac 27"
    Core i7 2.8GHz
    8 GB RAM
Bootcamp running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate

Thanks for the reply.  I actually played a little more with the settings after I posted, which seemed to solve this somewhat. (should have tried before posting I guess, but at least I can share this with others..)
The iMac 27" I have uses a Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB 81) sound chip it seems.  The drivers are fine.  I went into the standard Windows sound mixer (right click on volume icon on task tray (lower right) then select Mixer).  In the Mixer, there is a Boot Camp Manager slider along with the Device / Speakers one.  They are normally linked; when you use the keyboard volume up / down buttons to change volume, they all go up and down in unison.
I found that, if  I set the Boot Camp Manager slider manually to a much lower setting than the others, the scale / gain is minimised.  Playing with this, I could get a more comfortable setting, not too loud any longer!

  • Lumia 900: Speaker volume too loud, headphone volu...

I know this issue has been posted before, but I wanted to see if there are any updates. There was a firmware update to fix the purple hue problem, and was hoping this that this issue would be resolved along with it, but no such luck. The external speaker cannot get quieter than 7/30. Anything below that seems to do little or nothing. The alarms are scary loud even at 1/30. I can't turn music at work because even the lowest volume is WAY too high.
The other problem is that the volume out of the headphone jack is way too soft. I have to bring the volume up to 30/30 to not have to crank the volume to a deafening level in the car, for example. If I forget to bring the volume down to 1/10 when I get out of the car, I get startled by a loud notification. It's a constant game of going from 1/30 to 30/30 and back to 1/30. It is very frustrating! Can we expect a fix for this sometime soon?
    -Jonathan

I agree there is a volume bug on the Lumia 900 - I have had my black Lumia for about 5-6 days now. I used my previous phones as my alarm in the morning and wanted to continue to do the same with this device. With the preinstalled alarms app, regardless of whether I have the volume at 1/30 , 15/30 or 25/30, when the alarm sounds it is incredibly loud. Not a very good way to wake up in t he morning so I am currently still using my IPhone as my alarm clock. Let's get a bug fix out for this Nokia; I am having to use a 3GS to pick up your slack.

  • Nokia 2700 handsfree kit volume too loud

my car (2007 bmw with fitted in bluetooth handsfree kit) connects fine with the new 2700 nokia i bought, however people keep telling me that they can hear me too loud over the phone, while in the car the volume is ok. I didn't have this problem with my previous nokia model, or with the one my son has, 5310 Xpress Music. The problem is that i can change the volume settings in the car, only the speaker volume that is,and the phone, once connected, doesnt allow any change of volume settings.
it is just the microphone volume, so not the speaker volume, and that i don't have this problem with other nokia models...
    Yours sincerely,
    Nicolas

As always, as this is a place where people will often/likely come when they have an issue of some sort you can't really measure whether or not something is structural or 'general occuring' by posts here. No one would deny that you may have an issue, but if it were as widespread as you seem to think it would be all over the media which is isn't.
I'd have the phone checked at the retailer or a Nokia Care Point.

  • Headphone volume too loud in Facetime calls - iPad Mini Retina 7.1.1

    Hi,
I have an iPad Mini Retina Space grey 32GB Wifi version updated to the newest iOS 7.1.1.
I've noticed that the headphone volume during Facetime calls is always extremely loud even on lowest volume setting and there's no way to lower the volume further down. It's independent of the person I call, and the same problem appears in both in Facetime video and Facetime audio calls.
The bug only appears in the Facetime app and only after inserting the headphones and (not noticable when using the speaker). Setting a volume limit in Settings doesn't affect this loud volume during Facetime calls. I've tried 3 different headphones and I've also done a full reset of the iPad and setting up a completely new iCloud account.
I also have an iPad Mini (1st gen) and an iPhone 4 and I don't experience this bug on those devices.
Have anyone experienced the same bug? Any solution?

pandora?      once I got used to it, it bacame second nature to simple reach over and toggle the hotspot off and on.  not great if you have the constant need, but if you have the constant need, it wouldnt be shutting down in the first place.
If this is a big issue for you, and there is no persistant wifi available, you might think about a standalone portable hotspot.  Pretty much every carrier in the US has one they would be happy to sell you, along with a data plan.
(look on e bay for a used one )

  • Bluetooth volume too loud, volume step 1 is silent

Did this too... Still the same...

When connecting a Sony SBH-20 Bluetooth Headset to my Z1 Compact there is no sound when Bluetooth voume is set to 1. I need to raise it to 2 for the sound to be output and then it is too loud for me when listening to music. SW version in mobile is 1.4.4.A.0.108I have also tried with a Jabra Play BT headset with same result.Update: Now I have tried with a Sony SBH80 and then it works ! Step 1 on the volume does output sound and on a reasonable level when playing music. For the SBH20 and Jabra Play the problem persists, but to be clear the in-call volume works fine on all steps, it is the Media/Music volume that is silent on step 1. It also seams that step 10 does not give any increase for Media on these two headsets. SW error ?

  • Background volume too low even when turned up to 200%

I'm just making my first film with iMovie '08. I can't seem to get the volume of an audio clip to play louder. I purchased a specific song on iTunes. I then brought it into my movie as background music. I've turned up the volume to 200% and reduced all of the audio clips to 15%. This is driving me crazy! Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? The background audio is just too low and I can't seem to increase it.
    Thanks for your help.

When you play music from iTunes can you play it at full volulme? If so, it is not the MBP it is either something to do with the MP4 player (what are you using for that) or the conversion.

  • Creative Sound Blaster Arena Headset HS-1100 Windows 7 Volume Too Loud

I have a strange problem with my Creative Arena Headset. The volume level of it is too high.
To avoid hurting my ears, i have to set the master volume in the windows mixer to 4/00, this causes a problem when running other applications and adjusting volume. For instance, when running skype, the volume control within the application is literally either "off" or "on" and I can often here every bit of buzzing and background noise that I cant hear through my speakers seperately.
Also, because the volume has to be set at 4/00, the feature in windows to automatically adjust volume levels of applications doesnt work, so I cannot use the feature of automatically lowering the volume of music when chatting online.
This poses an annoying problem i have tried to resolve for a while now (ever since I have had this headset).
I am running the latest drivers from your download site: XFHP_PCDRV_LB__0_000 on the Windows 7 operating system.
I have also reinstalled the drivers and tried the headset on a different computer and it results in the same massi'vely loud volume.
Is there any reason my headset is so loud? Is there anything I can do about it?

    @Dodgetimmy,
Can you try reinstalling the headset using the driver from the installation cd? You might also want to try using the generic drivers by simply plugging the headset to the PC without installing the Creative drivers to see if it makes a difference.

  • Conference join tone volume too loud

Does anyone know how or if the join tone on conference calls can be adjusted on a UC560?  We get a lot of complaints that it is too long and loud.  Of course if I turn it off I get complaints they don't know they have joined the conference.

The tones can be completely customized in the CLI: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/admin/configuration/guide/cmeconf.html#wp1021172
Unfortunately I do not believe CCA offers anything other than the default.

  • Home connect speaking volume too loud

I recently purchased Home connect.  I have 3 bars of signal.  The speaking volume is so loud that the audio is breaking up and severly distorted.  We purchased new high end Panasonic cordless phones-same problem.  The corded phone sounds the same.  I went through the ##1 process and set the level to 1.  I think this changes the listening volume not the speaking volume.  It did not change the symtoms.  Not sure where to go from here.
    Thanks for any thoughts
