ITunes 11.1.3 makes my 2011 MBP with 10.9.1 reboot when it is launched.
Whenever I launch iTunes after my Mac has either been asleep awhile, or it have been about a day or so it crashes my Mac and reboots it to a grey kernel panic screen. AFter rebooting iTunes will work fine until I close it for awhile and want to relaunch it the next day. I am stumped. I got rid of all my User/Preferences. I deleted all plugins in User/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plugins and /Library/iTunes/iTunesPlugins. I also went as far as to wiping all library and previous library files in my Music folder and reimporting everything again. Not sure what the next step should be. Here is the crash log.

2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing
I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time. It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive. My workload hasn't fundamentally changed. Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees. Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding. Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal. There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping. Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low. (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
Here are the apps I typically run:
- NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
- Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
- Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
- kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
- WindowServer also reports using 280MB
- various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard. But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough. Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be. I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes. (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
Are other people having similar trouble? Any suggested remedies? Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion. Actually, quite a few things have broken. Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs. But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much. But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
pig. The longer you are using it the more memory it
gobbles up.
In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine. May
help since it is a huge collection of files. But there have been
issues reported with Time Machine and Lion. I don't
use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
seperate data backup strategy. Also, in Spotlight
preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
my Windows VM folders, for same reason. Unless you really
need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
of disk access time.
For solving airport issues check this article:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
can.
Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up. -
Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
Do you???
Thanx
JayI'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments. -

2011 MBP with SSD/Time Machine Issues
Early-2011 MBP (MacBookPro8,2)
8GB RAM
240 GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD (newly installed)
750 GB HD (original boot drive, now with the user folder on a 500 GB partition and a 250 GB Windows boot camp partition)
I replaced my 750 GB boot drive with the OWC SSD recently and put a fresh install of Mavericks (10.9) on the new drive. I used the OWC bracket and moved my old 750 GB drive to the optical drive bay. Erased and reformatted the 500 GB partition (on the 750GB drive) as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive. I moved my Home folder to the Mac partition. I've since reinstalled apps and replaced my Home folder contents from a clone I made.
When I try to run Time Machine (either via a directly connected HD or via Time Capsule) I end up with the machine freezing up. It doesn't always totally freeze up, but once I try to click around or open the Finder or an Application I end up with the beach ball and end up having to do a hard reboot (hold power button til it shuts down). If I don't wait awhile before restarting sometimes the machine won't find the startup disk. It does seem like Time Machines starts... as it does start writing the backup record. It never finishes though.
Based on some of the other threads I've read I ran the following command:
find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
And was given the number "235".
Any pointers? There's no simple or easy way to do that, and it depends on your circumstances. See Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume for some suggestions.

2011 MBP with odd Kernel Panic?
Hey guys, my system had a weird kernel panic that I've been searching for solutions on and finding little. In the quest to NOT have to take it to Apple, I thought I'd ask the wise minds of NBR if they might have an idea what could have caused the following panic:

=============================
Open, running applications: Mail, Fidelia (music), Firefox, Reeder, Dreamweaver, Photoshop. At the time of the freeze, the display was put to sleep via Expose active corner. When I tried to move the mouse to wake the display again, nothing happened and I heard the song that was playing in Fidelia stuttering in place. FWIW, I've put my laptop to sleep this same way with these same applications running regularly for 6 consecutive days without any issues. That would make it extremely hard to reproduce.
I find it odd that the IOStorageFamily extension may be involved. The only thing plugged into USB was my bluetooth headset, which was charging. It is not synchronized with the laptop...it was just charging. The mention of WindowServer is less surprising, as I've read that Expose/Spaces usage can impact that.
It's possible that the parallels kexts or paragon kext are related...but really, those are the same drivers I used for almost a year on my 2010 MBP without ever experiencing this kind of issue. And Parallels was not running either. Paragon NTFS is always running.
I'm really pretty new to this kind of trouble-shooting, so if anyone has thoughts or input, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Ok, so I ran the Apple Hardware Test (I needed to press and hold Option (alt) + D on startup, not ONLY D, which the apple KB stated) and the result was pretty clear:
"AHT found the following problem: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0x8329b798"
According to other discussions on the forum, this is, as Linc Davis stated, a problem with the RAM.
So, how do I reinstall the original RAM? Is this something that you can do by yourself? My Apple Care has expired, but I might have som guarantee left from the store where I bought my computer.
Thanks for the help! -
2011 MBP with Win7 on BC and numerous drivers not working
I'm working on a tech project and have run into a problem that i can't fix. <grr> I followed the Apple directions for installing a second OS on Boot Camp and found some good tips from other online walk throughs, but am still having a problem with a number of the drivers.
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" with the most up to date version of Snow Leopard. I have installed Boot Camp and Windows 7 Pro on a 50 Gb partition. I have installed Windows 7 and activated it. Once Win7 was up and running I updated the Boot Camp drivers with 3.2.0, the latest version that I know about. Initially I had no recognition of either the wired or wireless controllers even after the Boot Camp 3.2. I was able to determine that I had a Broadcom wired ethernet card and found the driver and installed it via USB so that I could use Win7 to access the internet.
The drivers that, as found from the Device Manager, are not working are as follows:
Network Controller - Wireless
PCI Simple Communication Controller
SM Bus Controller
High Definition Audio
Apple Keyboard -> Bluetooth USB Host Controller (though the USB ports are active and operational)
Facetime HD Camera (1 of 2 not working)
I have been able to use the wired internet to download and install all of the available Win7 updates, but nothing can be found on the above drivers. I even manually installed the drivers for each of these components from the Snow Leopard disk for Boot Camp and they would not install.
From all the information that I can find on the Win7 Boot Camp install, nothing more recent than early 2010, everyone seems to have everything just install and work. I have not seen anything from anyone about the wireless and wired network cards not working or any of the other issues that I'm having. The majority of the issues were with the optical audio LED staying on or some other more trivial issue.
Anything you can suggest would be great so that I can use the internet in Win7. The rest of the drivers are second to getting on wireless.
Thanks in advance for your help. If you have any more detailed questions please let me know and I'll get answers back.I have a 15" MacBook Pro, built July 2011. It came automatically with Lion. No OS X disc provided in box with Lion, due to it being a download only OS.
I followed the boot camp process to partition the hard drive and format the appropriate partition, to then install Windows 7 Pro Upgrade (clean install - works fine). Just like the original post, the following drivers that will not install properly include:
- trackpad
- keyboard
Even when trying to re-install the drivers again manually off the boot camp disc, a window pops up to stating that the drivers may not have installed properly and gives you the options to either re-install the drivers 'using the compatability settings', or 'no the drivers installed ok'.
It's almost like it thinks Windows 7 is an old program....weird.
The keyboard and trackpad is missing from the Boot Camp control panel, so I can't change the settings for the keyboard and trackpad, to get them functioning the way they're meant to - like it does in Mac OS X.
I thought that this page would help: http://www.reviewmylife.co.uk/blog/2010/06/08/windows-7-on-macbook-pro/ but no it didn't. The boot camp control panel screen dumps shown in this link, looks nothing like mine, due to the fact that the drivers refuse to install properly.
I have spent hours trawling many mac and windows forums with not luck.
Anyone with a MBP running Lion OS and Windows 7 Pro have these issues?
Does anyone have a solution? -
17 inch late 2011 MBP with no sound from right speaker (Help)
Hello community,
I purchased a new MBP 17inch model and noticed sound only comes from one speaker. I've checked the system preferences and moved the balance 100% to the right and no sound at all. I don't believe this is normal, but before I make a case I wanted to speak with the community first. All responses are appreciated Thank you. Before you take it in, try resetting Pram.

2011 MBP with 500gb hitachi drive
I upgraded from a late 2008 core 2 duo to the new i7 with 500gb hitatchi drive in it. Has anyone else noticed that the hard drive is louder on the new MBP then the older one. My 2008 model had a 250gb drive and I never heard it run but on the new MBP I can hear it running all the time. Not a big deal, just curious if others have noticed.
Hi,
the clinking/clicking nois is beacuse the hard drive is not registered;
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
That should fix it, if it didn't try it again and if no luck then there is a fault with your hard drive.
Good luck

Has anyone else had this happen? Is Apple aware - how can I inform them of my issue - do I have to wait months and months till 10.7.5 comes out, for a solution?
Thanks,
GeorgeI have had the issue with a Snow Leopard but never with Lion.
Can you go to System Preferences>Displays>Color and select your profile.
I had made 3 profiles and they are all still there and my iMac is still using the same one I previously selected -
2011 mbp with 500gb hd now shows 397gbhd
I don't know when it happened but hard drive says the total space on it is less than it was when i got it. i was running parallels but deleted it. But it is not the amount of space used that bothers me but i bought a macbook pro with 500gb and i now have 100gb less.
why?

Go to Disk Utility, take a shot of the Partition tab (select the drive, top entry in the sidebar) -
How to stop MBP with Retina from logging out when HDMI plugged in?
When I plug in my TV to the new HDMI out port on the MBP +Retina, the screen turns blue (like it used to on my Mac Air), the resolution changes, but then when the sceen comes back I am at the login screen. Not only am I logged out, but all my apps that were open were crashed (not quit).
Anybody experience this? How do I fix it?
Thanks!
DanielYou're not alone. For me ther'es no HDMI in use, it happens when it's not connected to anything. At first I had thought it was tied into VLC since it happened consistently there at first, but for the last week it's been happening anytime, no VLC running. I'm trying to track it down as well so while I have no resolution yet, at least you know you're not alone. VERY frustrating since I do a lot of file work and hate it when it does this part way through a 20GB file copy...

27-30" Monitor to accompany 2011 MBP
I'm looking to upgrade desk monitor now that I've got the 2011 MBP with the Radeon HD 6750M. Primary use is video editing, with some standard home-office activity. I do have some light coming into my study, so antiglare has become more important to me. Here are the options I've been mulling over...
1. Dell U3011
2. 27" iMac (although not antiglare and facing refresh soon)
3. 27" Apple Cinema Display
If I have the patience I'm inclined to wait for the iMac refresh to see if they come with antiglare along with the better hardware. But I'm also very interested in the real estate of the U3011.
Thoughts?
Thanks.I'm using a 2010 15" MBP with apple's 27" cinema display mainly for Final Cut Pro and Aperture / Photoshop works. The experience couldn't be better. This screen is massive, and unless you get a spotlight or a window right behind your shoulders pointing directly to it, it's own brightness would eliminate any other reflections in your room.
If you find a way to test it in you'll stay with it, I guarantee that.
regarding the dilemma of buying an iMac or a new MBP, I would buy the latter and here's why:
an iMac will never come in Matte, so there's no difference between an iMac screen and an apple cinema display.
an iMac is still limited and not expandable as MacPro is, so choosing between a desktop configuration and a portable-cinema configuration would make sense only if the desktop configuration is a MacPro.
The latest generation of MBPs is being reported as fast and powerful as today's MacPros model and even better so why limiting yourself to a desktop workstation while you can have the best of both words by opting for a MBP-Cinema display configuration! -
AMD Radeon HD 6750M, Early 2011 MBP, 10.9.4 Problems
Hello,
Ever since 10.9.3 update I have a serious problem with my Early 2011 MBP with AMD Radeon HD 6750M card.
First my configuration:
MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (Macbook Pro 8,2)
16 GB RAM
512 GB Sandisk SSD and 750 Stock HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6750M and Intel HD Graphics 3000
OS X 10.9.4
I'm usually using my MBP with external display with a resolution of 1920x1080. The display is connected via DVI to Mini Display Port adapter. When I connect the external display, my MBP switches to the AMD card. Here's where the problems begin. If I'm using Davinci Resolve, Capture One Pro or any other software (that I use regularly) that uses the GPU extensively, the cpu usage will rise, the computer will start to feel sluggish and my productivity almost becomes none because even the simplest tasks such as opening another tab in firefox or safari takes anywhere between 1-3 sec. When the computer starts doing that, I cannot play a simple HD video at native fps and the whole machine basically becomes too expensive paper weight. The strange thing is that even after I quit all programs, the system cpu usage continues to be high, around 50% with kernel_task being the star using all this cpu and it keeps using all of this cpu forever, at least until i shut it down or disconnect the external display and manage to make it switch to the internal Intel gpu.
The problem started after istalling the 10.9.3 update and it's still there with the 10.9.4 update. I even formatted the computer and reinstalled everything but the problem still persists.
I haven't experienced anything like this on 10.9.2 and the machine was actually quite fast before that. Now, I have too expensive paper weight on my desk.
Since the problem is very specific, I doubt many users will complain and I doubt Apple will ever do anything to fix it, at least until hopefully the new drivers in 10.10 fix the issue hopefully.
My question is:
1. Has anyone else experienced this and managed to solve the problem?
2. How can I downgrade to 10.9.2? I don't have time machine backup but i have bootable usb with 10.9.2. Will it help?
All best,
GoranWhen you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Batch Processing Issues - RAW to JPEG in CS3
Hi folks, I recently upgraded to CS3 form CS2. Over the weekend, I spent several hours tweaking/adjusting about 200 RAW images in Bridge, that I need to convert to JPGs. I used a Photoshop Batch action that I created some time back in CS2 to convert
