Itunes 11.1.4 erased my library on install OS 10.9.1

I clicked on update this pass Friday for itunes 11.1.4. Upone iTunes reopening my library was empty. I tried several methods of importing my library via old library/ and or xml files. This did not work. I spent 2 1/2 days reimporting all my music/apps/tones etc... to iTunes. I felt I was finally getting somewhere. I shut down my computer. Upon arriving home I opened iTunes so I could sync my iphone. Arrrgghhhh my library is empty again! In my itunes folder i have lots of "tmp" files. What is that about? I have attached a screen shot as well.
Macbook Air 1.8ghz intel core i5, 8gb 1600 Mhz DDR3
OS Version 10.9.1
Itunes folder on external drive formatted as Windows NT Filesystem
HELP!!! i cant do this again!

Was the library working before this?  Macs cannot write to NTFS drives without special software.

  • Can't transfer files from iTunes to iPhone without erasing song library

I purchased some music from itunes on my computer at work(which is authorized on my account). I connected my iPhone to transfer (sync) the music to my iphone, but iTunes warns me that all music on my iphone will be erased. The music on my iPhone is currently sync'd with my home computer. My question is: How do I transfer music to my iPhone from two different authorized computers without erasing the content on the phone?

You can't sync music from two computers to the one iPhone.
You need to copy the files onto something like a USB stick and take them home and add them to your iTunes library at home.

I tried to update itunes and now it won't open, how do I fix it?  Will uninstalling and reinstalling erase my library?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:

  • ITunes 11.4.0.18 update erased previous library

After updating to iTunes 11.4.0.18 for use with my iPod Touch, 4th gen. iOS 6.1.6, my previous library complete disappeared.  I'm working with Windows 7 on a machine that more than meets the hardware specs for this particularly software.
The problem:  When I opened up iTunes after the update, it began an automatic search for media content as if it this was the first time the software had ever been installed on my machine, as evidenced by the total absence of library content. I looked in vain for this content, and came to the Apple forums for solutions.  I tried a suggested workaround involving locating my previous library file in the iTunes folder, moving it to the main itunes folder, and renaming it, but imagine my surprise to see there were no other previous library versions available other than the one created the day of the update, as if . . . as if it this was the first time the software had ever been installed on my machine.
Now, iTunes can't reconcile the new library it's working from on my computer with the library on my iPod , and when I want to add new content to my iPod, it won't do so until I accept its demand that I allow it to completely erase all of the current content on my iPod in order to accomodate this inexplicable new library it's built over my old one.
What happened to my previous libraries?  Why is iTunes acting like this is a fresh install?  And why, for Pete's sake, isn't iTunes sophisticated enough to accept that some iPods might be working from a different library that isn't connected to the almighty "Cloud," without having to resort to a scorched earth approach like wiping my entire iPod just to be able to add content?  The problem seems strangely reminiscent of the software glitches and otherwise annoying inferiority of the Sony Connect Player software suite that made me come to the Apple line of products in the first place.

    Thanks for the reply, tt2.
Problem solved.  I searched for .itl files in other locations and found one made prior to the update inexplicably in folder that was not the iTunes folder.  Copied it, renamed it, pasted it, and got my library back.  Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction.
Still baffled as to why this happened though.  I've never had a problem with updates in the past.  This was a first for me.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • ITunes Keeps Erasing Entire Library

    Hello,
Since the most recent iTunes update, my iTunes has started to erase my entire library. I have re-imported all of my music, books, videos, ringtones and TV shows back into iTunes at least 20 times, only for iTunes to dump the lot the next time I open the software.
I have tried to resolve this by uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling 3 times to no avail. I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening.
I am running Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall.
Any advice on a resolution to this would be sincerely appreciated.

  • When I click tones in iTunes it says its going to erase the library on iPhone

Ive got an iMac and Ive logged into the Guest User Account to hook my wifes iPhone up to iTunes. I made some Ringtones in Garageband that I sent to iTunes & when I click on her device in iTunes and then click on Tones and select the tones I want to put on her phone then click sync, it gives me a window that says its going to erase her Library on her iPhone then replace it with the iTunes. Now, Ive got NOTHING checked in iTunes except the option for syncing tones. Is it going to erase her music library if I click Okay or is it just going to put those tones on her iPhone?

I had an HP laptop with Itunes on it and kept my library on an external hard drive. I had a 160gb classic Ipod.
My computer died and i am buying a new one (mac is out of budget)
When I get my new computer, obviously I will download Itunes. My Ipod still has all the music on it and the external hard drive is ok.
I don't want to "erase" or lose any information when I sync with a new itunes that is "empty"
What are the steps? After I download Itunes and set the folder location to my external harddrive what is next? Will Itunes recognize my IPOD? Will it load the music/list from my ipd or external into itunes?
    Thanks in advance

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Help! I erased my library!

Help!! I just erased the entire library from my ipod by accident! The songs on my ipod are no longer available to me from a computer(old computer died, new computer has no music yet). Is there anyway to restore this?
    Compaq/HP   Windows XP

I presume that you pressed yes at the iTunes warning. Pressing "Yes" when iTunes brings up the dialogue window asking whether you want to replace the songs on your iPod with the songs in iTunes does exactly what it says. If you linked to a blank iTunes it will have erased your original iPod song list. There are some data recovery programs on the market but I don't know how effective they are either technically or in terms of cost . Here's an example I found using Google : iPod Data Recovery

How do I keep my downloaded content on my iPhone 4 when connectng to iTunes? It says erase and sync. I want to keep what I have downloaded, and manually manage contend on iTunes. Can I do this without it saying erase and sync?

No backup? Never a good idea to not maintain a backup of your important data. If you do not have a backup, follow these instructions:
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you formatted your computer, your phone, will see your computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes(under the edit menu).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in whatever supported applications you use for contact & calendar syncing. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, itunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
That's as good as it gets without a backup of your itunes library and other important data..
