Itunes 11 Book author and Album artist sort problems

(I've changed the name here, to protect the innocent and avoid comments about my taste. I shall call him 'Fred Anydude' )
I have an ebook by 'Fred Anydude'. He appears in book view under the [Authors section] in the right place i.e. with those Authors whose last name begins with 'A', (because the sort artist field has been set up as 'Anydude, Fred'.)
Then I acquire a music album, also by Fred Anydude (Hey, what can I say, he's talented). The problem is in the music view in the Artist section I expect Fred Anydude, to appear with the other artists beginning with F (as is the convention for music artist sort order), but he doesnt. He's appears with the A's again. The sort artist is blank in the case of the music album and its songs. So I set up the sort artist for the album and its tracks as Fred Anydude. I switch views, to give the opportunity for a refresh, I even restart itunes - Fred Anydude is still being sorted according to his book view sort artist despite what I've set up for his music: Still appearing with the A's
But to confuse matters, under Album view with the Album view sort order set to 'by Artist', the album does appear along with other artists beginning with F.
To make matters worse if I do a search for Fred Anydude, I only get shown the book in the results. The music doesn't even appear.
Is there a fix?

I suppose a better way to differentiate between album artist and artist is to say Track Artist.

  • ITunes Store does not show author and "album artwork" of my podcast

Although all information is available - the itunes store does not mention the author and "album artwork" of my podcast - if podcast is downloaded, album artwork is shown...
How can I add the informatin (especially that author is not "unknown" anymore)
    http://itunes.apple.com/de/podcast/nie-mehr-schuchtern-der-podcast/id404201576?i =88951302

For reference, you feed is at http://kontaktvoll.de/tinc?key=r5FOIixD
This is not a valid podcast feed for iTunes. It's missing the 'itunes declaration' in the second line. The top two lines of your feed should read as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <rss xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd" version="2.0">
Without that, iTunes cannot read the 'itunes' tags which are necessary to carry some of the information, and which in any case are missing from your feed. The author name is carried in the 'itunes:author' tag and the image in the 'itunes:image' tag.
This page contains a basic sample feed so you can see what it should look like and how these tags are formed:
    http://www.wilmut.org.uk/pc
If you are hand-writing this feed it's a good idea to put returns in after each closing tag, as in the sample. At the moment most of your feed is on one line and this makes it very difficult to read when looking for problems, particularly as you add more episodes.

  • Help with Artist Sort Problem Needed...

This is a bit long, so I'll start with the three main questions and below them is the backstory and detail of the problem (I did do a search but nothing turned up):
    1) Does anyone know how to fix artist sorting issues where the artists are properly sorted (alphabetically by last name and band name) but there are constant grey-bar letter headings for the first name (sorry...I don't know how to explain better than I do below in detail)
    2) Will re-setting the Touch require I have to...
    a) re-add all the songs I've manually selected again
    b) re-input any data saved to apps (such as CarCare and
Pocketpedia) and if so, can I backup that data first?
    3) If all the re-doing in 2 above is necessary if I were to re-set the iPod, can anyone think of an alternative fix that would avoid a reset?
I might be able to get to an Apple store this weekend to ask a "genius" but I'm not that confident in them since I was given some incorrect information on how the Touch handles playlists at the time of original purchase.
    Okay... now, what happened:
I'm not sure what to make of this, fortunately playback and all main functions are unaffected. I have my iPod Touch 2g set for manual sync. Today, while I was charging it at work, my PC (WinXP) froze. I gave it plenty of time to unfreeze, but eventually had no choice but to do a hard reboot while the iPod said "syncing." I slid the slider to cancel the sync, but the iPod didn't respond. I unhooked it from the PC and it unfroze. I shut it down and re-started.
Everything seemed fine after the iPod reboot except that now, while the artists are still sorted alphabetically (I've manually set artists to sort by last name), there are headers using the first letter of the first name between each artist. So, for instance, this is how the top of my artist list looks now (lines below with just a letter are the grey divider bar with the alphabetical header):
    R
    Ryan Adams
    D
    Dave Alvin
    T
    Tori Amos
    E
    Eric Andersen
    A
    Apples in Stereo
    Arcade Fire
    L
    Louis Armstrong
    A
    Ataris
    ...etc.
This problem has not extended to album or song title fields, but for some reason, when scrolling through the album view using the index on the right, it moves fine until "O" -- then it sits still as I scroll down until it gets to "#", at which point it's resposnive again.
I've checked the music library on the iPod via iTunes and the artist sort fields are still correct.
Suggestions? I'm new to the Touch and am leery of doing a reset yet since it's taken time to figure out which songs from my 100+gb library to manually put on this. Also, I have no idea how it will affect the apps I've downloaded. There are some where I've saved data (such as CarCare and Pocketpedia) and I REALLY don't want to risk having to re-input all that data.
To anyone with any words of advice, thanks in advance.

This is an answer to only qestion 2. Yes restoring your ipod will delete all songs, apps, videos, etc., but you can back up settings like a passcode lock or screen brightness. But it will ask if you want to back up settings. If your'e on windows, in itunes go to file and down almost all the way you will see a "Tranfer purchases from (ex.) steves ipod" and that will make sure you have all your apps and music and other stuff.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Compilations and Album Artists...

I give up. Apple just can't seem to decide how the heck it wants to organize albums.
They ad an "Album Artist" that is useless. In iTunes it is great for DJ mixes. You can have each track and its artist labeled correctly and then group them all under the DJ's name as the album artist. Or be able to leave all those "featuring so-n-so" tags as is and assign one artist as the album artist. Great, love it. Works in iTunes.
But the iPod touch hasn't a clue. It displays all the artists names but then groups them with the album artist. Meaning you get artists out of alphabetical order mixed throughout the list. Really confusing the shortcut slider on the right side.
But if you switch to coverflow mode it groups everything just fine. But you can only browse so long before it crashes.
I'm just asking for some consistency. Don't get me started on the fact that my Apple TV has its own rules about how to sort compilations that are different from the touch and iTunes. Aren't the same people writing this software?

I don't see that problem with mine. Maybe it's just me, but I kinda like the sort of the whole thing.
I have a bunch of compilations (Soundtracks to movies and such). I just list the Album Artist as "Various Artists", then individually put the artist down. That way if I want all the songs by the individual artist, I can look for that, if I want multiple songs by the different artists, I can just search by Album.
How long does it take before your CoverFlow crashes?

  • Why doesn't sort by album artist sort by album artist?

I so far haven't found a straight answer for this, so I figured I'd just ask for myself.
I have more music than my phone can hold. So it can be hard to navigate a phone thats literally just music and vital systems, so I like using the horizontal view in the music player, where the album art is displayed in the grid. The only problem is that everything is just scattered about, seemingly sorted alphebetically. Before IOS7 it was sorted by artist, and it was far easier to navigate through my library, but now the option labelled as "Group By Album Artist" does absolutely nothing. I've changed that setting a million times, and yet still nothing changed.
Is my phone just stupid? (unlikely, since my last phone had the same issue) I'm incredibly meticulous about the song info, so I know that all of the proper information is included. (seemingly, at least.)
Is there something I'm missing? Or maybe some specific thing I can do to achieve the same effect?
I currently have an Iphone 5s, and I previously used a 4. Both have experienced the same problem.
(I also recently began to edit the sorting fields in itunes, and still nothing changed.)

    Hullabaleur wrote:

It groups them by Album Artist, instead of Artist.
Keep in mind that for most albums the Artist & Album Artist are the same so likely you won't see much of a difference. Most albums won't even have the Album Artist filled in.
When horizontal, they are sorted by Album name.

  • Artist vs Album Artist sort for Cover Scroll

I have a huge library of Cast/Soundtrack albums and have taken much time to sort each track by 1000's of artists. And then use new Album Artist to head each compliation as "Soundtrack" "Original Cast" et al... But for some reason certain discs are read in this new Album Artist while others either default to 1st Artist on Track 01 or default to end of Scroll under Various artists - despite my relabeling??? (even though new label does read on the new title)

sidssp is correct. This is how "Album Artist" is intended to be used. But there are two problems with this IMO:
    1. Having "Ray Charles & Norah Jones" and "Ray Charles & James Taylor", etc on the individual tracks as the "Artist" and "Ray Charles" on all the tracks as the "Album Artist" is cool when one is searching the library. However, when one is browsing the library this is a major PITA. The browser control keys off "Artist" ... and there is no way to switch it to use "Album Artist". When I search for "Ray Charles" I want to find any track he is on ... regardless of whether he is the main artist or featured artist. I can then select the exact track I want from the results. But when I browse for "Ray Charles" I am looking for a Ray Charles album(s). Unfortunately, the Artist list shows me "Ray Charles & Norah Jones", "Ray Charles & James Taylor", etc. Now I can select all of the Artist entries and get a list of all the albums that I want, but this is really a pain and unintuitive. Which leads me to the bigger problem ...
    2. The iPod does not utilize "Album Artist" at all. If one utilizes the "Artist" field to reflect the main artist and featured artists as intended, then there is no way to quickly locate the main artist on an album, and then select all or individual albums by that artist. Which in my case effectively renders the new "Album Artist" field useless because there simply is no workaround.
    OAW
PS: This is nearly as stupid as introducing playlist folders in iTunes and not having any sort of iPod support for the feature!

  • Itunes not grouping the same album artist together

I have had a quick search but not found anyone talking about this issue, apologies if it has been mentioned before.
I have a number of albums that are mixed by DJs. I have set it up so the artists in each album reflect each individual song and the "album artist" is the name of the DJ. I have selected compliation and assigned an album cover. This works fine and each album is grouped together as one album as it should be. The problem is that iTunes doesn't seem to want to arrange these albums in the order of the album artist (ie. the DJ who mixed it).
If I order by "Album by artist" all these albums are placed at the end of the list and ordered by album name and not album artist. If I add the "album artist" category to the display and arrange by this, the albums get split up into individual songs - which is even worse!
Is there a way to get iTunes to sort these albums so they remain together as each album and are also arranged in order of the "album artist" so that eg. All albums mixed by DJ X appear first, followed by those mixed by DJ Y and finally those mixed by DJ Z?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Grouping podcasts
A podcast series will split up in this way when its feed is moved to a new URL. Merging the series requires editing all the older episodes so that they appear to have come from the current feed. Download and install Mp3Tag (not sure of a Mac equivalent offhand). Use it to explore the Extended tags of podcasts from the same series. PODCASTURL (formerly ITUNESPODCASTURL) is used to link different podcasts from the same subscription (as opposed to fields like Album & Album Artist etc.) and PODCASTID (formerly ITUNESPODCASTID) determines the order. Everything else seems to be optional. Backup your files, tweak a few a tags then play each track briefly in turn. If iTunes still fails to notice the updated tags try my script UpdateTagInfo (Win).
As far as I'm aware the order is determined by the PODCASTID, but if you need/want to modify the Release Date then in MP3Tag/Extended Tags it corresponds to RELEASETIME in the format yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ssZ, e.g. 2008-02-20T09:10:52Z

  • ITunes deletes symlinked folder on Album Artist rename

    Hello community,
I experience a very strange behavior of iTunes in combination with Symlinked folders. I use Windows 7 and my folder structure is listed below. I have a Laptop with a 256GB SSD and instead DVD-Drive a 640GB SATA drive.
    Drive layout:
    C: System (Windows Drive)
D: UserProfile (also symlinked to D:\Username
    E: Media
My iTunes DB is about 170GB large including media of all kind. I spread the iTunes Media subfolders among several drive, because I want iTunes to start up very fast, but playing music and syncing my iPhone would not benefit from the fast SSD Drive so I don't want to waste the valuable fast space.
Now when I change the Album Artist of an album iTunes kills/deletes my Music symlink folder after completing the first rename and show the rest of the album as missing files (with the ! in front)
I have discovered that this only happens when iTunes tries to rename/move folders like it does if the Album artist is changed.
I have already tried restricting the permission to the symlinked folder to read even with deny write permissions, but it manages to delete the folder everytime.
I have used a folder junction instead also. All without joy.
The owner of the folder is the Administrators group which my user is a member of. There are several reason I cannot work a a regular user and I do not want to change that.
So did anyone experience this and knows why this is the case? I would be glad to know. Thanks for everybody investing a thought
Sorry for this text monster, but this really bugs me.
    Best regards Bruce
P.S. Maybe Apple will here my whining and look into this behavior also.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes and symlinks don't play nicely... They work OK as long as iTunes is only reading data but get all confused when iTunes tries to write back. I recommend you just put the whole library on a drive big enough to hold it all in one go.

  • Album Artist sort order

When I sort by Album Artist, it sorts, but the next level of sorting seems to be the artist then I'm not sure what it sorts by? I prefer the tree to go Album Artist>Album>Track number, is there any way to modify this?

In the iTunes the Album by Artist view ordering is:-
    <Sort Album Artist OR Album Aritst OR Sort Artist OR Artist>, <Album>, <Disc No.>, <Track No.>
On the iPod, Cover Flow ordering is:-
    <Sort Artist OR Artist>, <Album>, <Disc No.>, <Track No.>
Where the OR uses the first non-blank value. In iTunes you can use Sort Artist to make a number of different artist values sort as one & display as one entry in the browser list. On the iPod this will group an album as one unit for the Album & Cover Flow view, however the Artist menu may still display the individual values put in the Artist field often listed thus:-
    Artist
    Artist/Guest 1
    Artist
    Artist/Guest 2
    Artist/Guest 3
    Artist
    etc.
I use the Sort Artist field myself, in preference to putting all guest artist info. into the track title, but it's worth noting the side effects of doing so. Hopefully at some point the iPod sorting rules will be changed to match that of iTunes.

  • Artist, Album Artist, Sort Artist...

With all of the new tagging features I am a little confused. What I want to do is simple. For example on the Akon and Eminem song "Smack That," I want the artist to be displayed on my iPod as 'Akon, Eminem' but when I am scrolling through the lists of artist I want the song to be grouped with 'Akon', not as another artist. Is there any way to accomplish this?
    TIA
    Ross

I don't know if you can do it on your iPod yet, but on iTunes you could put the sort artist as "Akon" and the artist as "Akon, Eminem" and it should do exactly what you want. Not sure if Apple is ever going to transfer this to the iPod or not though.

  • Difference between "Artist" and "Album Artist"?

    Hi
I'm wondering why in the iTunes browser there is a field for "Album Artist" and a field for "Artist"?
Aren't they referring to the same thing?
    Thank you.

No. Some albums have various artists. For example, I have +Satin Doll: Smooth Jazz Plays Duke Ellington+. For album artist, I have "Various," but for each song I have the primary performer of that song as the artist. Album views come up Various, while songs come up with the artist. It's good for grouping tracks. Also, some people like to included featured guests in the Artist field, but having the Album Artist consistent helps with various views in iTunes and on the iPod.

  • Is album artist sort available on iPod classic now?

If I buy an iPod Classic today, is there an option to have artists sorted by album artist? Thank you

I'm fairly certain there have been no changes to the classic firmware.
The workaround is to set as a compilation or set a common artist.
