Itunes 11 - CD import speed

Hi there
Seems since I've downloaded iTunes 11 last week, something has caused the speed when I'm importing CDs to drop, almost to reverse!
Previously with iTunes 10 I imported CD tracks as m4a files using AAC Encoder @ 128kbps; tracks would import at a speed of almost x20.00. Now it takes way longer than the song length (I've given up every time I've tried so far, but looking at the iTunes progress bar I'd estimate at least 30 mins a song!!!!) I save all my music to an external drive, but again this was never an issue before.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Hi Hibsred,
That definitely sounds frustrating, iTunes should not be taking that long to import CDs. I found the following information which may help us troubleshoot this issue:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Import songs from CDs
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12486
If you have trouble importing songs from an audio CD
If iTunes doesn’t recognize audio CDs or if you’re having trouble importing songs, check the following:
If iTunes doesn’t recognize an audio CD (it doesn’t appear in the iTunes window), quit iTunes, then open it again by double-clicking the app icon in the iTunes folder in the Program Files folder on your hard disk. Do not open iTunes using the shortcut on your desktop. If iTunes now recognizes the CD, delete the iTunes shortcut and create a new one.
Choose Edit > Preferences, and click Import Settings. If the “Use error correction when reading Audio CDs” checkbox is not selected, select it. If it’s already selected, deselect it.
If you’re having trouble importing songs, make sure you check your computer or drive manufacturer’s site for firmware updates and install any that are appropriate for your computer and CD or DVD drive.
Make sure you have the latest software updates for Windows or your CD or DVD drive. Check the Windows website and your computer or drive manufacturer’s site for updates. Also make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound cards.
If you have more than one CD or DVD drive, try using iTunes with each drive.
To see if iTunes can find any problems with your CD drive, choose Help > Run CD Diagnostics and choose DVD/CD Diagnostics. For help with understanding the diagnostics results and other CD troubleshooting information, see Additional troubleshooting tips for burning issues at the Apple Support website.
If it’s taking a long time to import a song (more than 10 minutes) from an audio CD, the CD may be dirty or scratched. Try cleaning the CD with a soft, lint-free cloth, and then importing the songs again.
Thanks,
Matt M.

No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

  • An upgrade to 10.4 cut iTunes cd import speed nearly in half? Help!

Just upgraded my Mini to 10.4 and saw an immediate negative impact on import speed in iTunes. What was average 8.0-10.0X import speed has dropped to 5.0-8.0X average. If I'm REALLY lucky it jumps to 9.5X. I'm not the smartest tech-type person out there, but I can recognize cause & effect. Any suggestions or ideas?

iTunes import speed is reliant on both RAM and processor speed. Tiger has a host of applications that run in the background called Widgets. Starting with 10.4.2 you could manage your own widgets with Apple's Manage Widgets button on Dashboard. Try disabling all widgets and see if it makes a difference.
    http://www.downtownsoftwarehouse.com/WidgetManager/
is available for 10.4 and 10.4.1 to do the same thing.
Also if Spotlight hasn't finished indexing, that could slow down other system processes. Check the Spotlight menu (the blue circle with the white magnifying glass in the upper right corner) to see if there is just a search field, or a search field with the words saying that it is indexing. If the latter, wait until it is finished.

  • Inexplicably slow importing speeds with iTunes 7.0.1 lead to suicide...

Or they will any minute now. Tom ake things worse, for a brief moment, I was back to importing at around 3.5x, my average speed before iTunes 7 (though for some reason using lossless before iTunes 7 gave me an average of 12x). But the glory did not last. I'm back to 0.1x and so I am now considering ending it all before it gets any worse. Thanks apple for giving and then suddenly taking it all away...

I have had the same issue. Which didn't begin until I upgraded from itunes 6.x to 7.x.
    I also upgraded as mentioned.
Read/import speeds went from as high as 11x on 6.x to less than 1x! It took 9 hours to import a 55 minute CD.

Similar behavior on Quicksilver G4, takes several minutes on the last tack of a CD, and DVD drive can be heard (excessively) spinning up and down through the complete process.

  • ITunes no longer imports or plays CD's

I'm running iTunes 8 on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and I've run into a problem where if I try to import a CD, iTunes starts to import the first track, then just proceeds to skip through every track until it reaches the end with nothing imported. As it tries to import, you can see the little animated importing animation to the left of the song, but it only lasts a second or so then moves to the other tracks and does the same until the end.
I get this same issue when trying to play a CD, with iTunes skipping through all the tracks trying to play something. I've done the iTunes diagnostics for the CD drive, and all tests have passed. CDs play fine in Windows Media Player BTW.

I have a nearly identical problem. I can import part of the first track, and for some reason, part of the 6th track and then skips over the rest. It shows the play times as a huge number (somewhere around 667 hours) but imports nothing. I cannot play the CD with iTunes either.
I bought vista home premium and was disappointed to discover it does not come with a x64 bit disk. I used vista 32 bit software and had absolutely no problems with iTunes. After a fresh install of vista for 64 bit iTunes no longer works properly. I can still play anything I transferred from my backup HD but no importing is possible.
I have tried the error correction with no success. I tried installing and running 32 bit iTunes and it gives me an error saying something to the effect of "iTunes is improperly installed. You may need to reinstall iTunes to fix this problem."
I have a hard time believing that this is due to a x64 bit problem as Apple has used this technology longer than most. Is this an issue with the latest iTunes? I am going to fuss with it some more but I'm very frustrated that I can bearly use the new iPod I bought. Any suggestions from Apple users as well as Dark Side (*vista or windows in general :)*) users would be awesome.

  • ITunes is only importing small parts of songs

Hopefully this hasn't been posted, already, I checked and didn't see any topics specific to this.
Alrighty, so I imported some WMA file songs that I had into iTunes.. however later on I noticed that iTunes had only imported the first 2 minutes or so of the song. For example one of my songs was 5 minutes long, but iTunes only imported the first 1:56min. of it. Is there a problem with my iTunes settings, or is it something else?

  • ITunes having trouble importing CD's

I have a question regarding iTunes and importing CD's(particularly my burnt CD's)to my iTunes library. I have the latest version of iTunes 7
Over the past few days I have been trying to import my cd collection to my iTunes library, for some reason iTunes seems to be "hit or miss" with importing my CD's.
With one CD, iTunes will import the CD without a hitch. The next, iTunes may get as many as 2-3 songs imported(if I'm lucky) and then it seems to stop importing the CD all together. The import speed will fall from 7.9x - 8.1x to bottoming out to 0x. Everytime this happens, it is within the last 1 second of importing a song. The status bar "freezes" at the very end and will not go any further. I have to manually eject the CD to stop the importing process. I have never gotten any type of an error message while trying to import a CD. I have no idea what to do to get this to work right...
I have been searching these forums for the past 2 days trying to find an answer. But with no luck so far.

  • Import speed

Since I upgraded to ver. 8.1.1 my import speeds have dropped considerably... I used to reach 10x to 11x speeds... Now I'm getting no higher then 3.2x... Does anyone know if there is a fix coming?

to update my earlier post I have contacted apple support over this matter and apparently I am the first person to have reported this issue the techie asked a few questions got me to check "import settings" to make sure there were no issues there I am using AAC encoder and the error checking box in UN checked. He asked me to do a complete uninstall and re-install following support topic ht1925. I have done this this and the problem still remains import speed of no higher then x3.5 and ending up less then x1. I ran task manager while doing the last uimport and itunes was at 97-97% of cpu. i hope this extra info may help please.

  • Importing speed dropped to almost zero

Hi. I've been updating my iTunes library with an average import speed of between 10-15, but now it's dropped to 0.8 making importing Cds impossible. I've tried several Cds and this problem is constant. I've also tried the diagnostic check and it's not flagging up any issues with the Cd drive.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? iTunes recognises the Cds ok, it's just not importing them quickly.
    Thanks.

My normal import speed is 5x-7x with error correction on, up to 9x with error correction off. Never seen higher than 9.2x on this machine using iTunes. Cdex can go faster though, but that is two step process of ripping then adding to library.
