ITunes 11 CPU keeps peaking at 100%

Most operations in iTunes are resulting in CPU peaks of 100%. This makes iTunes agonisingly slow to use. Can anyone suggest any adjustments to make it less CPU-hungry?

I was having the same problem.  I have a brand new Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2.4GHz i7. I called support 3 times to try and work it out.  We tried re-installing iTunes and a host of other things. It came down to there being a problem with the library.  I had imported it from an earlier version of iTunes from an older mac  (Where it worked fine.)  In the end I just had to re-load all my songs into the library.  This is no small feat as I have around 185K songs in over 1TB in my music library.
The problems i was having were-
-sluggish performance, gap between song playback, slow searching, slow quitting (Or not quitting at all until a force quit)  It was essentially unusable
-using 100% or more of CPU.
-not being able to remove songs from the library.
- having multiple temp files appearing in the music library folder
I ended up creating a new library in the music folder in the sidebar. (Its default location).   I keep my files on an external HD, and set up the prefs to keep the music folder there.  You will want to export your playlists somewhere where you can find them and import them after you build the new library.  As long as your files don't move, iTunes should be able to load everything back into the playlists.
Once everything was set I went to iTunes/Files/Add to Library and manually selected a chunk of my library, then let it process.  I would take a letter or 2  at a time so I could redo if necessary.  (such as bands starting with" A", starting with "B" etc).  normally it would take 3-4 hours per letter.  I would let it do its thing, then quit and restart itunes, make sure it was playing, quitting etc as it should.  It took me 4 days to get the entire library re-entered, then re-loaded my playlists, and now it seems to be working just fine.
Obviously this was a pain as it took 4 days to re-do, but there was something about the old library that itunes just couldn't digest.  Now itunes runs at around 2% CPU when playing, maybe 20% when searching etc.  it will quickly play another selection when chosen.  just like it is supposed to.
it's the slow way to fix it, but it was the only thing that has worked for me.  I finished this 2 days ago, so time will tell if the problem crops up again, but for now averything seems cool.

  • Install itunes - cpu goes to 100 percent and stalls.  Uninstalled, tried fixes on internet, reinstalled - same story

Have installed, uninstalled itunes on xp machine and tried all the fixes given in the discussion groups, plus cnet and other internet fixes.....nothing works.  After installation of itunes cpu usage goes to 100 percent and itunes stops.  Cpu stays at 100 percent until I uninstall itunes.  By the number of posts on the internet, I can't believe Apple hasn't addressed this issue with a fix.

I had the same problem but this worked for me.
Get to a dos command prompt and type:  netsh winsock reset
You will need to reboot your computer but it fixed tocpu 100% issue.
    Good luck

Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something?  I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out.  But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.

  • My CPU usage jumps to 100 % when I use iTunes 10.6.1 -using Windows XP Service Pack 3

When I open itunes 10.6.1 my CPU usage jumps to 100%.  it started doing this about 6 months ago when I updated itunes.

This helped me.  You should try it.  Now I can run itunes or Safari and my CPU usage is around 22%.
    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

I have Dell computer with Windows Vista on it. When I would start up Itunes, it was using a 100% cpu, like you. Before I did the lastest upgrade, it was Ihelp.exe (I think that was what it was called) but since the latest itune upgrade that is no longer on my machine. What I think is causing the issue now is APSDaemon.exe.
I followed the instructions at the following link and I found that I had a spyware software that I did not want and did not need. PC Tools (Spyware Doctor). I uninstalled it and then Itunes started working fine. The link below will help you find what security tools maybe running that maybe causing your issues.
I hope this helps. This was very frustrating problem!

How did you "reinstall?" Others are reporting that installing from scratch is working better. If you're going to keep trying with Lion, I'd recommend posting in the Lion forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion (wow, I almost said "Windows forum," hmmm ).
I may get in at 7.1, more likely at 7.2, but only if things look like they've changed enough. This appears to me to be on par with the change from 9 to X, and I waited until 10.2.3 with that one. If/when I do change, I'll have an up to the minute SL clone ready to reinstall if needed, and even then, I'll probably put 10.7 on an external HD.

  • Help MSI GE60 Fan keeps spinning to 100% and down every 10 seconds.

    Hello,
I just bought an MSI GE60 and after 4 days of using, The fan keeps spinning up and down every 10 seconds even when nothing is running on the laptop. Have tried updating the BIOS and the drivers, but no change.
Every time i turn on my laptop this always happen. It goes on when my laptop is on. Even if im not doing anything it still keeps spinning up and down. I checked the temperature and its at 40+ C and my CPU usage is normal. Basically im not doing anything and it keeps doing this fan spin up and down.
Even when the cooler boost is on or off, its still does the same thing, the fan keeps spinning up to 100% and down.
Do you think this is a software issue or hardware?  It is very annoying to hear the fan go 100% for 10 seconds then back to normal then back to 100% speed again and when i press cooler boost it doesnt do anything. So even tho the cooler boost button is off, it still keeps doing the 100% fan speed and back to normal again. It keeps repeating.
Can anyone help me solve this problem please? Thank you very much.

I have already tried uninstalling the S-bar and SCM drivers but still getting the fan noise. Also tried the no-battery and no-power reset for more than 24 hours but still having the same problems. The only thing that worked was changing the values in the RWeverything software. The only problem here is that it will work only until I shutdown the laptop. Once I do a cold boot I have to redo the RWeverything changes again.
    @reprieve.nagrand
thanks for your case. Can I ask you a few questions more, please?
    1. According to your model id your notebook came with just FreeDos, right? Could you please enter the Bios and go to System Information to confirm that you are using Bios 10F and EC version 14.04 (or 4.04)?
    2. I urgently need a screenshot of your EC-Page within RWeverything after a cold boot without any modifications. Please try to make the screenshot at that time, when you can barely hear the fan anymore during the spin-on / spin-off cycle.
    3. CoolerBoost: with a laptop that has been sitting idle for at least 20mins since last cold boot (no load, please!), can you turn on coolerboost by pushing the button somewhere to the left of the Powerbutton and let coolerboost run for at least 30 seconds. Then turn coolerboost off again and wait for the fan to slow down. Does the fan run continously after applying coolerboost or does it enter its off/on-cycle again. Please try it for at least 5 times and repeat it during other Windows sessions for two times. If this trick works, you are the man to make the video! Please help me out here. Please note, that the coolerboost trick will only work until there is load on the system again. If the fan speed picks up again due to load and slows down again, it will enter the annoying pattern, again.
    4. While still reviewing the case and going through my notes, I came across an entry that I reflashed the EC-Controller with the same firmware one or two nights before the problem disappeared. This happened after uninstalling S-Bar and SCM earlier. So, if you are familiar with DOS-Flashing using USB-Sticks you could try to reflash the EC-Controller, than remove all power sources for at least 20 mins. If anyone else is experiencing the problem, please go ahead and report your findings. But please do the reflash only if you are familiar with such things and of course, please do so on your own risk!
Current status and work in progress:
As I haven't gotten hand on a video proofing that simply pushing the coolerboost fan button makes the problem temporarily go away, I am still stuck on there. The coolerboost solution works until the system load increases so much, that the fan level has to be raised. When the system load goes back to idle again, the fan level decreases and enters the off/on-cycle again.
The good news is I managed to customize a programm called fan control tools to somehow automatically apply the changes in RWeverything via a small GUI. This tool will also allow you to set fan profiles for Office, Games, etc. The bad news is, that this will trigger UserAccountControll at least once and it doesn't reapply after a cold boot or returning from hibernate, yet. I am now currently working on a solution that allows the new fan values to be set by Windows automatically using a batch file. This will apply the new values after a normal Windows boot, but not when returning from hibernate, though.
However, if you have found your remedy value for the fan issue within RWeverything, you can turn to Svet in the subforum "Notebook Modified & Private BIOS'ses & EC-FW". He will certainly be able to create you a custom EC-FW with those values written permanently in it.
    My case:
The fan problem with my notebook has not (yet) returned. It has been running without S-Bar/SCM just fine. It can even process all fan profile alterations I have made. So, am I just lucky? While I do believe, that the fans of those notebooks experiencing the issue could be "somewhat odd", I find it hard to believe that my fan really suffered a mechanical problem. Without doing anything mechanical wise, my problem went away.
@Warner: I promised to present more videoproof of the case, but unfortunately I haven't managed to get a hold on a suitable video, especially since my unit has been running fine for the last weeks. Please be patient, if I have enough evidence I will post it asap.
One question bothers me though: looking at the EC-page of RWeverything, I was wondering if these are really all values, that the EC handles and checks. Are there any other values, variables that the EC manages and that are not displayed on the EC-page of RWeverything? The reason for asking this, is because I have a video showing the ECpage of RWeverything while the fan does his off/on-cycle and you can clearly see the RPMvalue correspond to the actions of the fan. As you pointed out, the boosts occur because the EC is missing a fan signal, I could clearly see the RPM value at offset 0xCD respond to the actions of the EC. If the controller looks for that value only, it should surely see the RPMs of the fan, as I can see them in RWeverything. So, I was wondering if the EC has other values not shown in RWeverything, that determine if the EC should enter the boost cycle?
While having another look at that video again, to me it appears as if the EC does this really on purpose. It tries to reduce the voltage of the fan to a point so low, that the fan simply starves. Then it boosts the fan up again. The only question is: why does the EC do that? Is there a leftover setting inside the EC - perhaps from another notebook - where such low RPMs were achievable?
You can find the video here in this zip-file: http://www.file-upload.net/download-7371226/MSI.rar.html
In the zip-file you will find three numbered videos, the first one is the most interesting as it shows the annoying fan cycle while the laptop is running idle. In the second one, the user put load on the system using prime95. The third one shows the system while it cools off again after prime95 has been stopped. Sadly, the video is too short as the system doesn't reach its lowest fan state again. The videos were taken in march in Germany, so the ambient temperature is around 20-21 °C or less (normal room temperature in Germany).

  • Verity on MX7 causing CPU to spike to 100%

We have just migrated our sites from CF5 to CFMX7. I
recreated the collections on the new server and everything appeared
to be fine. Now seeing CPU utilization spike to 100% when a search
is run. Any ideas as to what to look for or why this would be
happening? Thanks in advance for any help.

mDNSResponder is a process that searches and publishes content automatically. It's normal for it to be going non-stop in scanning IP networks. However, it should never take more than a 2-10% of your total CPU.
The MDNSResponder is just doing what's being asked of it. In short, there's an appllication/widget/etc. that's working at elevated rates. I was surprised, for example, that by signing up for Veoh, a small amount of bandwidth was being used - continually, without my knowing it - to support their whole network. The MDNSResponder helps achieve that. A network filter does the same thing. There is some service which is doing the same thing with your computer. It's magnified if you operate in Low Power Mode, since the stream of data just doesn't stop. It operates at elevated levels when an application (like iTunes) boots.
Find the application, and then decide if you're paying a fair price. You can do your own policework by playing around with Activity Monitor (which also uses it).

it wont let me download itunes, it keeps saying "error". How do i fix it?

You say "It won't let me download iTunes ...".  I cannot imagine what you mean.  What does "It" mean?
iTunes is a part of iOS on your iPhone.  If your iPhone can turn on, iTunes is already there.  You cannot separately download iTunes to iPhone; you would have to update iOS to get a fresh copy.

  • ITunes Match keeps repeating and Sonos Play 5!

So this note has two pieces to it, one related to iTunes Match and the other is Sonos Play 5.   First an observation about the iTunes Match repeating problem.  I wanted to start using iTunes Match for a couple of reasons so I started to run it. It went through Step 1 and Step 2, started Step 3, stopped and restarted on Step 1.
So I was reading trying to find a solution in the Apple Support Community.  Some suggested that there was a corrupted song in the library so I went back to watch to see if I could catch when it left Step 3 to go back to Step 1. I was not really able to see exactly were it was reverting back to Step 1.
I then discovered ajlewis1851 note about reset Match, Store and the computer (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20530276#20530276)
I also discovered a song that was not in my library so I deleted that from the library as well.  Neither of these seemed to work and it was back repeating itself.
I left Match running while I was doing more searching and I discovered the thread about gating the upload speed as the upload speed might be the problem.  Well I spent a long time trying to figure out how to slow my Airport Extreme Base Station down and then I noticed that Match was uploading between 2-15 files before it would kick back to the beginning and the total number of files to be uploaded was slowly decreasing.
Low and behold after quite some time, Match finally finished and said it was done!  This has to be some serious bug in Match, but eventually it got done.  Not sure whether the two steps before helped or not.
Now to the beginning of the story.  I started down this path because I was setting up a new iPod Touch to serve as controller for my new Sonos Play 5 system.  Everything seemed to work fine with Pandora and I was very excited. Synced a few playlist from my iTunes library and for many of the songs there was the dreaded ‘unplayable icon”-circle with a line through it!  Did some additional searching and discovered that the iPod Touch to Sonos Play 5 was only possible with DRM songs.
This is an aside.  It is necessary to place this discovery against my experience of playing my iPod thru a Sonos iPod Dock without having to worry about the DRM status of the music.  My disappointment was nearly overwhelming.
But Sonos recommended a strategy of iTunes Match to remove the DRM from the songs in my library.  Hence, my need for iTunes Match from the beginning of this story.  But this is not a very clean solution.  Even after one has done the iTunes Match, it is necessary to find all of the ‘Protected AAC audio files’ in your library, delete them and then download the ‘Purchased AAC audio files’ from the cloud.  (https://sonos.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/626) and Apples directions (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1711)
There are of tricks in doing this ‘Protected’ to ‘Purchased’ transition.  When you select Music in your library, and then right click on the top bar above the music you can select additional columns to be shown. Select ‘Kind’ and you can see which music is protected vs purchased.  You can sort this column, thus bring all of the ‘Protected’ files together, select them all and with one right click delete them!  (I very very strongly recommended you have a couple of backups of your library, just in case and there is a small box in the dialogue about deleting them from the Cloud as well---MAKE SURE THIS BOX IS NOT SELECTED). Much to my delight, in the ‘Cloud’ column, you are presented with the choice to download the ‘Cloud’ version (now DRM free).  As best as I can tell, one has to download each song from the Cloud individually. My fingers were very tired after millions of clicks.  I did a few at a time so it took me the better part of a day to accomplish.
I was very excited because I now had DRM free music in my library (I figured this would solve the problem).  I connected the iPod Touch to the library, choose not to sync my playlist so all the playlists from the iPod Touch were removed and then reselected the playlists of interest and had them placed back on the iPod.  I ejected the iPod and tested the playlist on the Sonos.  Much to my surprise, the unplayable songs were still unplayable!!!
I deleted the Sonos App and reinstalled it (Did not work).
I deleted the playlist from the iPod Touch, and resync it to my library (You really don’t want to do this as it also deleted the playlist from my library!)  Fortunately, I had one of those backups.
I then sync another playlist to the iPod Touch.  This second playlist was the complete album from which two songs were placed in the original problem playlist.  Much to my surprise, all of the songs from the album were fine, EXCEPT, the two songs that were unplayable in the original playlist.
I finally came to the conclusion that something had been stored on the iPod during the initial sync with the DRM containing music that prevented the non-DRM music from working properly.  With a deep breath, and only after I disable the iPod Touch connection to iCloud (in a couple different places), I then went to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and ran it to restore original factory settings. It was plugged into a power source.
After setting the iPod Touch up again, I reconnected it to my iTunes library and moved the problem playlist over that contained several unplayable songs.  IT WORKED!  All the songs were playable.
    LESSONS:
    1. If iTunes Match keeps repeating steps 1 and 2 watch carefully to see if the number of songs to be processed is changing for the better.  If yes, at least in my situation, it completed the process, but it took much longer than I believe it should have.
    2. My suspicion is that if you have installed DRM protected songs on an iPod Touch, the Sonos recommended solution will not work as stated.  Interestingly, it did seem work on my iPad and 4G iPhone.
Addendum: I have discovered a few songs where the Sonos recommended solution did not work on the iPad and iPhone as well.  Several are from the Madonna.

Well.....It is now working....... Including converting locked tracks located on the IPad library into unlocked 256kbps tracks playable by Sonos...
    Used these steps:
Signed up for ITunes Match using ITunes on a Windows PC
Let Match do it's thing with 700 or so tracks
Followed the procedure in the link above to create a smart playlist of tracks with bit rates less than 256kbps
Using the smart playlist as a guide, I deleted or download tracks not appearing in Sonos on the PC. Then, refreshed the Sonos music library and confirmed these tracks now available and playable by Sonos
On the IPad, for tracks that were grayed out in Sonos, I deleted and re-downloaded the tracks using the Music app (swipe right to left on a track to delete it)... then got into Sonos on the IPad to confirm the tracks no longer grayed out.
So... I'm now happy.... I like the Sono system of WIFI streaming which is very flexible and produces decent sound quality, but did not realize until after buying the Sonos bridge and two Sonos speakers that older ITunes songs would not play in Sonos due to DRM locking.  So, will now work through the library of locked tracks converting and re-downloading.
Thanks again for the pointers on this question.
