ITunes 11 duplicated playlists for each synced device

Hello, I have noticed on iTunes 11, that when I right-click a song and "Add to Playlist", it opens a context menu that contains 3 distinct sections of playlists, iPad, iPhone and Mac. I have never created playlists individually on my mobile devices, and always sync via iTunes. How can I remove the duplicates?

Feedback sent.
I did find one clunky way to at least get something working: if you go into Podcasts, and go into List view (see selector at the top-center of the screen), then you can Select All, right-click, Get Info, and set Skip When Shuffling to No for all podcasts at once. You'll have to do this frequently, though, if you want new episodes to be shuffled. What a pain in the keister.

  • Maximum of 1363 playlists for iPod sync?

I have iTunes sync selected playlists to my iPods, but I have encountered what appears to be a playlist limit to do this. I have a very large library (+18k songs) and a large number of playlists (around 1400). iTunes does not show any playlists after the 1363th. Even worse is that the last time I synced my iPod, playlists that were alphabetically less than 1363 but now past that point are deleted off the iPod without warning. Is this a known limitation? I haven't been able to find any information online about this. I was able to produce this error on multiple iPods (both Mac and Windows formatted) on both iTunes for the Mac and Windows).

ok going by my quotes/your answers
you state no recreation of music as itunes does this..how do you automatically sync your ipod/itunes then to the ways we chose the album to play??
how do you choose the playlists to be synced to your ipod??
the 10-20 cd issue..i create a playlist of great tracks i want to hear from 10-20 cds as some are crap etc so we make a playlist of what we want. then this playlist automatically gets synced everytime it gets new tracks added to it with the ipod that has this playlist. going by the browse option it is limited to just that artists, albums etc and not MY playlist that i made from it, what order i want etc.
you question playlists as if there should not be so many- as in 1400 is a lot...beside the point that i should not feel limited to how many playlists i have, 1400 is not that many to music collectors, i have over 25,000 songs in my itunes, i collect vinyl and record that also. so a playlist for each piece of vinyl. The point of the matter is limiting playlists creates nothing but problems, was it placed to itunes to be a solution to anything?? No
fine example-original soundtrack The devil wears prada it is missing 2 great songs from it KT turnstill and Madonna Jump. so i make a playlist with the original soundtrack and i add the missing songs. I should be able to choose that playlist and those2 extra songs are there. but the problem is i have so many corrected soundtracks, albums etc that i cant even get to my S section to load to my ipod automatically. when i then use the browse section to add the soundtrack it can be added but missing the 2 songs. hence frustration occurs. and this is the same for me using the example of adding the 4 new tracks to ipod. if it is in a playlist with my own compilations of songs they will not load using the itunes browse section that ppl keep referring to. so this is a "DRAMA"
most albums we buy dont have songs we all love, we change tracks about, we have fav pref in how we want to listen to them etc and this is what ppl that have been commenting on this issue have been forgetting.we have a choice in how and what we listen to and apple is taking this away by limiting music playlists. so hencea playlist is needed for each and every album.and doing it the browse way etc is not the answer.
i wish i was to be wrong and that there was a way for me to be shown that you can load any compilation, and listen to it however you like but sadly it is not the case. See how frustrating and slow it is having to delete a playlist one by one just so i can get to the 1400 mark to load my music as i have it. so at least 1600 playlists @ 30sec-1min per playlist to delete (my playlists approx 3000) so about 14hrs non stop deleting to get the most out of my ipod/itunes...fun fun fun..NOT and there are better things i could have done today on my day off.

  • Automatic creation of a playlist for each album imported in the library?

I'm a former Windows user switching to iMac and I need to reorganize my music.
Is the windows iTunes library file reusable in Mac? (I tried but did not work)
Is there any way to design a special playlist in oreder to create a single playlist for each album in the library?
Thx in advance for your support
    Gianluigi

I can't help you with your first question.
To make a playlist of each album, select all tracks of that album (click the first track an then shift-click the last one) and choose 'New Playlist from Selection' from the File menu.
Did you experiment with using the Search Bar (shift-command-B) and the Browser (command-B)?
This will let you quickly navigate to a certain album or artist.
Or tick the checkbox 'Show links to the Music Store' in Preferences>General
Option-clicking on the little arrows will quickly bring you to the artist or album.

how to make each playlist for each movie songs ? when i tried to add songs all movie songs comes in row , its very difficult to find which movie song belongs?

Thank you! I put some self help hypnosis tracks to listen to on my iPod. I did not want to go to the next track automatically, I wanted to listen to them individually, one at a time. (If I fell asleep, I did not want to 'wake up' in the middle of a different track.) Your information helps me understand that I need to re-load this playlist onto my iPod from my  Mac computer, only first, I need to UNCHECK the boxes in front of each track so the iPod will STOP each time after playing the selected track. It is too bad that so many functions are not availabvle within the iPod, but that is probably why they can make it so compact.

  • HT5649 Our family has a shared computer with itune software. We have multiple apple devices and multiple itunes accounts. Can we share the computer and iTunes software to back up each apple device separately?

How do multiple users with multiple devices share one computer with iTunes software to back up multiple devices and individual iTune libraries?

    Hi Goodguy147,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The easiest way to have multiple users with multiple devices share a single computer is to create a User Account on your Windows PC for each person.  Each person should also have a unique Apple ID.  That will keep each individual's iTunes Library separate from the others and each individual can associate and backup several devices to their iTunes library.

Follow the steps below to create a new user account in Windows Vista or Windows 7:
    Choose Start > Control Panel.
Open "Add or remove user accounts." (If you're using the Classic view in Windows Vista, open "User Accounts," and then open "Manage another account.")
Select "Create a new account" and follow the instructions to set up the account.
Once you create the new account, choose     Start > Log Off.
Log in to the new user account.

  • HT4847 Can I buy extra storage for each Apple device by having more than one Apple ID?

    Hi All!
I have multiple Apple devices and would like to have separate storage for each device, Ipad, Iphone, and Ipod. Is this possible? Can I have more than one Apple ID?

Not if you want them to share the same iCloud account so they sync the same data between all your devices.  To share the same account, they have to all be set up with the same iCloud ID, and will share the same 5GB of free storage (but you can always purchase more).
If you want them to be on separate iCloud accounts, you can set up a different iCloud account on each device using as separate Apple ID for iCloud on each.  (You can have more than one Apple ID).  If you do this, they will each have their own, separate iCloud account with 5GB of free storage, but will not sync iCloud data between them.

  • Itunes music and playlist does not sync correctly into iPod touch?

Ipod touch does not reflect itunes library.  Y ipod touch is reflecting music I do not have and is doubling playlist. Anybody know what is going on and how do I resolve this mess?

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

  • HT204053 shouldn't I get an icloud account for each apple device?

I have three ipad and 2 4th gen Itouch and 2 3rd Gen Itouch. Should I have an icloud account for each devices?

If you want to keep the synced contact separated created a different iCloud account on each device with a different Apple ID.  If you create the same account on all three devices, your synced content such as contacts, calendars, etc. will be merged across all three devices.

  • How to make a CD of MP3 songs to play on a Bluray player without ITunes creating separate folders for each album

I'm trying to make a CD full of MP3 files that I can play on my Bluray player for a long party, but when I burned the disc using ITunes, it created separate folders for each source album, and it won't play.  You have to open each individual album to get the songs to play.
Can you make a cd that has all of the songs in one folder?

  • To Apple:  SERIOUS FLAW:  Same Pix Download for each Sync of Anything

Even though I synced my iPhoto Library, when I told the system to do another sync (to get rid of some Movies I deleted), it starting downloading the SAME IPHOTO pictures that were already on the computer. I stopped it.
    This is crazy.
That would mean that it will download 2775 pictures EVERY TIME the system syncs. That's NUTS! It takes HOURS each time.
Obviously, in the next version of the SW, the system must check to see that the items already exist and do NOT require another download, especially when we are talking about thousands of pictures.
I suspect Version 1.1 will be coming out very soon and the fine Apple engineers will be working hard and through the night this weekend with the next release.
Thanks to them. It's fun being one of the first users and hopefully debugging the software early so new buyers have a better experience.

I don't think so Rob, since I've now actually witnessed this behavior... But as an aside, contrary to some who describe this as an "error", I disagree. It may be a functional spec you disagree with, it may be very bad "best practices" for some of us with large libraries, but it's not an error. It doesn't have an error code, or cause the Apple tv to crash or become inoperative, require a power cycle or reset. I perceive that it just wastes sync time, but it may yet have logic to it which is unknown to me a this point... ;-(
Anyway, I have seen what was described when I purchased a couple of new movies. For reasons I can't currently identify, it did resync all my photos. In my case only 500 some. This is not much of an issue in my case, since I have the fastest interconnect. But it certainly seems suboptimal, and arguably problematic, or even, "come back tomorrow" for those with thousands of photos and a slow link... Of course, the question is, what tells it that it needs to refresh photos (or whatever in other cases)?
For now, it is a mystery waiting to be solved...

  • For some reason, When I add my 'My Music' folder to Itunes on my new computer, as Itunes is adding music, It's creating hundreds of playlists from each of my artist/albums...I end up with a ton of playlists (200 gigs worth) How do i stop this?

Essentially, Itunes creates a playlist for each album in my 'my music' folder, resulting in thousands of playlists. Why is this happening all of the sudden? How do I stop this?
    Thanks,
    Brendan

    hi Limnos,
I do not mean the entire ITunes folder but, rather, the contents of the ITunes folder prior to September 29th.  (90% of the media is missing, along with all playlists)  The media that remains says it was added on 9/29 although I know most of it was added many months or even years earlier. There are no playlists listed at all, before or after 9/29.  (I know for certain that I added non-iTunes purchased songs on 10/6 although I had not created playlists for them)
I have my iTunes folder backed up on both an external drive as well as Time Machine.
I run iTunes off of an ITunes folder on my computer rather than from the external, if that's what you mean about how I have it set up.
Is it OK to drag the entire iTunes folder from the external drive onto my laptop's drive and see if that fixes it?
    Thank you for your help!

  • I upgraded my iMac to OS 10.8.2 yesterday. Now iTunes will not sync with any of my devices - Apple TV (gen 1), iPhone 5 (with new iOS 6), or first gen iPad. I get an "unknown error 1140" for each device. Any ideas?

Because the sync error is on every single device, and all 3 are running different versions of an OS, I assume this has to do with the new Mountain Lion upgrade. I probably should have waited for 10.8.3!  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A bit more info for those of you reading this.... the problem seemed to be in iTunes. For each connected device , if I clicked on the Photo option I could no longer select the second radio button for limiting the photos by Events, Albums, etc.  It was an all or nothing deal. But selecting all would cause the error.
So I had read the other forum posts about the "&" symbol being the cause of the problem.  I went through iPhoto and made all of the changes. It did not work. I then looked at iTunes, using the AlbumData2.xml file listed in the other forums as a reference.  I found one album with the "&". I edited that one.  Still would not work.  So then I spent 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare last week. I talked with 4 different advisors. None of them had heard about the "&" error from the forums. We tried everything in iPhoto including repair and rebuild.  Finally we created a whole new library and reimported my master photos from my original one.  Using this option would allow me to now check off that radio button in iTunes.  BUT... I now lost all of my albums and events and would need to rebuid them.  I was not happy. They agreed and we set up time to talk this week.
So today I talked with AppleCare again. They now have more info and said the problem has to do with iTunes and the new iPhoto 9.4. It does not like the "&" symbol anywhere in either iPhoto or iTunes. So they now have me going through everything in my iTunes library. Genre is OK but any other item cannot have " & ". I have several dozen to edit and will do it over the weekend and then restore my original iPhoto Library and see if I can finally get it all to sync. I will let you know how I make out, but apparently you need to eliminate " & " from every entry in iTunes and iPhoto.
Quality control is not up to par with Apple these days.

  • 5 devices, 1 itunes.  Need playlist help!

We have 2 iphones, 1 itouch, an ipod and an ipad among 3 people, but only one itunes account.  Is there a way to set up different playlists for each device withon itunes? Or do they all have to have the same playlists? Thanks!

Playlists is the way to go. You can set up one for each device, plus any others that you find useful. Each device can be set to sync with a different selection of playlists. Once set up all you need do is connect the device and sync, you can do all the playlist management with the devices offline.
    Tip for multiple iOS devices
To make sure your apps don't inadvertently merge turn off Automatically sync new apps from the apps tab when you connect your iOS devices. You only need to do this once for each device.
More thoughts on managing multiple devices
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • I tried to create a new library for my itunes to put music on for a separate device.

When I tried to get back to my orginial library, It didnt have any recent downloads on there. It stopped at like 4 months ago. Any changes I had made after that werent even on there. Now Im scared to even plug my device up because it will take music away on there I want to keep. Dont really know what to do. Ive tried opening the Itunes Library.itl and it still isnt the most recent form of my library. Any hints would be appreciated

Double-clicking on an itl file opens the last library that iTunes successfully opened, not necessarily the file that was clicked on. You need to press and hold down the shift key as you click the icon to launch iTunes and keep holding until prompted to create or choose a library. If iTunes opens normally close and try again. Use the choose option and browse to the folder holding your other library file. Use the same method to switch back again.
Selected playlists for each device are much easier to manage in my opinion.

  • How do I create separate playlists for two ipods/one library and them sync them?

I have an older classic ipod, my daughter has an older nano.  I got new laptop and have managed to sync my ipod and ipad with success, as well as move my library from old pc to new laptop.  Now I am trying to update and sync my daughter's ipod.  It says that it is synced but nothing changes.  I believe I had set up two different libraries on the old pc, and so certain cds had been copied into her library.  I can't find them in the earlier mentioned transfered library.  That's not a big deal, as I can just use those cds to add them back in later (more work though).  I've read older community posts on my issue, but any article links on how-to are too old, I guess.  I like the idea of using just one library and creating playlists for each ipod to sync to, but cannot figure out how to do this.  Also, do I need to restore my daughter's ipod to get the ball rolling?  She's taken a couple of videos she likes and I'm not sure I want to lose it in the restore.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Hey puckaluck8,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

You mentioned syncing separate playlists, which is definitely a good method. The other option you may want to consider is called "Manually Syncing", which you can read about here:
