ITunes 11 Edited Tags Changing/Reverting

Hello,
I have an iTunes collection that has been building since 2006. I divide my music into a few categories using the "grouping" tag. Often times when I edit the "grouping" tag I am overwriting either the label or a web address which had been previously added to that tag. I also use Mixed In Key software to analyze my music before adding the music to iTunes. Mixed In Key enters the key of the song into the "comments" tag and the BPM into the "BPM" tag.
I have been doing this for years and lately I have began to notice a problem. On some songs (most songs don't do this), when the song is played iTunes "refreshes" the tag and often times the "grouping" tag changes or reverts back to the info that was previously in the tag, such as the label or web address.
Further, sometimes the key that is written in the "comments" field will change to a long code of digits... something literally like 00007658935482748193.. Always beginning with several zeros.
Is there anything that I can do to have iTunes hard rewrite these fields so that they do not change by themselves?
Thanks.

Yes, others are seeing this. Something in purchased media (I am pretty sure this has only happened with purchased media) is periodically checking back with the iTunes Store and resetting the tags in the iTunes library file but not in the actual media files (metadata are stored in both).  I haven't seen a truly systematic diagnosis of the issue (I use an old iTunes and have no iTunes account so I can't test anything myself).  There are temporary workarounds but tags will still revert after a time.

If the above doesn't work:
2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896#26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file.  Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.

Send feedback to Apple about this so they know it is an issue they need to investigate:

Don't expect an immediate solution but maybe the next time they update the software it may be resolved.

  • Stop iTunes writing tags on import

    Hi all
I have an issue with iTunes that maybe someone can help with. I have a lot of mp4  video files that I like to tag as TV shows indeed some are TV shows I've taped off the TV. Any how the files have had there meta tags set to TV shows and part or a compilation set to yes and all showed up in the TV shows section of iTunes. Now every now and again I do a clean install of the system or copy the shows from my main mac to the tvs Mac mini and when I re import the files to iTunes , iTunes then converts all the files to home movies and sets the part of a compilation back to no. All others tags remain unchanged. The biggest problem about this is that I use retrospect as a secondary backup solution and as iTunes has modified the files it wants to back up all 200gb again
Is there a way to stop iTunes editing tags. On import.
    Cheers
    Steve

Are these files downloaded from the internet? Oftentimes these kinds of files will include a playlist file with extension .cue or .m3u that look like music files but will cause iTunes to import the list of tracks twice when dragged along with the audio files.

  • Unable to Edit Tags

For the last few hours I have been unable to edit Wiki article tags. When I click "Edit tags", modify the tags, and click "Save", I get the message "An error occurred while saving or formatting tags." I have tried in IE
11, IE 9, and Firefox. Anyone else noticed this? I can edit articles, but I try to avoid that if I only need to edit tags.
Edit: OK, now that I have reported the problem, I seem to be able to edit tags most of the time, but not always. I cannot see any difference between cases where I succeed and where I get the error.

The problem seems to be with just two Wiki articles (the two I was working on at the time). I have been able to edit tags on other articles with no problem. The articles are:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/6233.introduzione-a-windows-intune-v2-it-it.aspx
where I was attempting to add the tag "Has Image", to match the duplicate article I marked for deletion. And
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5816.aspx
where I attempted to add "Windows Server 2008" and change "Has Images" to "Has Image".
I will wait awhile for anyone else to investigate, but then I will attempt to edit the articles (instead of edit tags), change this thread to a discussion (since there will be no answer), and consider the situation closed.

  • When I edit a song in itunes (i.e change the year) on purchased songs, the next time I return to itunes, the information has reverted back to the original information. How can I change that?

When I edit a song in itunes (i.e change the year) on purchased songs, the next time I return to itunes, the information has reverted back to the original information. How can I change that?
When I purchase ITunes music, and it is a song from a Greatest Hits album, the Year of the song shows the year the CD was released and not the year the song was released (i.e. a song may be from 1986, but the Greatest Hits album was released in 1999, so my songs in ITunes show 1999).    So, I go into each of those songs and change it to the year that I want to be displayed. As long as I don't exit out of ITunes, it will show the year that I changed it to (i.e. the 1986 year in this case). But if I exit out of ITunes and then return to ITunes, the year reverts back to 1999. The same happens if I change the genre of a song from, say 'Pop' to 'Alternative', it will revert back the next time I log in.
Oddly enough, as soon as I right-click on that song to change it back, the year/genre that I had entered returns.
How can I make it so my changes are permanently displayed as I want them?  This is pretty annoying when I try to find a song on my Ipod under a certain genre, but it doesn't appear in that genre because the incorrect information gets synched to the Ipod.

Make sure that these two options in Edit > Preferences > Store are turned off:
Then exit iTunes and open it up again.  Your metadata entries should then be persistent - with these options checked iTunes will be comparing what you have with the information held in the iTunes Store, and will overwrite with the latter for Store purchases (and if you have iTunes Match).  If you have any iOS devices you should also turn off Show All Music under Settings > Music.

Highlight the tracks you want to edit the tag for, do a Get Info, change the tags and click the OK button.

I think I have the answer.
I was experiencing the exact same problem. I tried lots of different things but what I think works is to exclude your iTunes folder from Spotlight. Open the System Preference for Spotlight, click on the Privacy tab, and then drag your iTunes folder (in your user/Music folder) into that window pane. In fact, I think it is faster when I am fixing tags!

  • ID tag changing using iTunes

Greetings, all - Still not sure about the ID Tag thing.
I know if I'm looking at my iTunes library, I can select a song or group of songs and use "Get Info" to change information about the song(s). What I'm wondering is, when I do this, does it actually change the ID tag within the song file or does it just change some table in iTunes somewhere leaving the song file unchanged?
Occasionally, I will purge my iTunes library and add all my songs again.
I have tried a couple third-party tag change like Jaikoz but for some reason it won't run on my eMac now. I was hoping that iTunes would make changes to the actual ID Tags of the songs so I don't have to bother with a third party app.
    Thanks in advance,

Yes, iTunes changes the ID3 tags in the physical files. There is no need for you to use a 3rd party application.

  • Track info changes revert when updating iTunes Match

I recently subscribed to iTunes Match, and whenever I make changes to tracks listed as "purchased" under "iCloud Status," all the changes revert after I click "update iTunes Match." This is incredibly frustrating, as all my artwork changes, genre changes, artist info changes etc. were all removed with one click. I should note that this does not occur for matched or uploaded tracks. Is this happening to anyone, and if so, how do I fix it?

    Hi,
Many thanks for the suggestions - replies as follows:
    1) I never have this option checked.
    2) This is when sorted by album - it's definitely not connected with my view settings.
    3) Cool - I was probably basing this on previous versions when I think think you could see Soundcheck running (if you couldn't I think you could scroll through the displays in the Now Playing window at the top). There was no apparent disk activity after checking either, but I haven't got arounud to checking file modified timestamps. Still don't understand why Soundcheck was disabled after upgrade though...
    4) This didn't happen with previous versions of iTunes. Have already scoured the web for help & it sounds like a common problem with this release. I built this PC!
    5) DirectX is already running on v9.0c, and I've got the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon 7500 128MB card. I thought it might be DirectX-related as I've been having problems getting Direct3D acceleration enabled. Haven't found any fixes yet relevant to this - have uninstalled all remote control software (including mirror drivers)& made a NetMeeting change which supposedly fixes this but no luck, reinstalled SP2, reinstalled drivers etc. Argh.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Editing Tags in itunes - does tag info stay with file?

I have a question about editing tags in itunes, hopefully I can explain myself clearly enough here...
I have a very large music collection...almost 10,000 files now, and have spent alot of time editing the tags, renaming mispelled artists and song names etc...my question is, when that tag is edited, will all that tag info remain intact when I copy the actual mp3's to another computer? I want to back all the music up to my laptop, which is running same version of itunes, but I don't want to have to start over again with editing the tags. When I initially put the files on my computer the tags were really messed.
    Thanks for any info.

Here is the last list I've had of attributes and were they reside:
For M4A and MP3 files... (WAV files do not have tags)
These are only in the iTunes Library files (ITL & XML):
    -- Playlists
    -- Ratings
    -- Play Count
    -- Last Played
    -- Date Added
    -- Date Modified
    -- Equalizer
    -- Volume Adjustment
These are stored in the music file itself:
    -- Artist
    -- Album
    -- Song Title
    -- Year
    -- Comments
    -- Compilation tag
    -- Lyrics
    -- Genre
    -- Grouping
-- Volume Adjustment (a special iTunes only tag in the file - non-standard)
    -- Composer
-- Bit Rate (not a tag - inherent to the file itself)
    -- BPM
-- Kind (not a tag - inherent to the file itself)
-- Album Art (only stored in the file - not copied to the iTunes Library ITL or XML files)
    Best of Luck

  • ITunes tags change by themselves !

When I edit tags in iTunes 11 (I always wait that they are properly recognized by Match), everything works fine, but then, after a day or two, about half of them restore to the way they were. Just as if I didn't edit them.
This is not systematic. This doesn't affect all of the songs in an album. This is driving me nuts.
I suppose it has something to do with Match but I couldn't say what.
Anyone has the same problem ?

by any chance, are the files in the mp3 format?
if so, perhaps check to see if your WMP is updating the tags silently in the background. see the following post for a discussion of that possibility:

If I knew how to edit that field I would have stated so - it is possible that the programers didn't allow editing for a particular reason - blame them - not the people trying to help you find a way around the your particular issue.
I know that you cannot edit the field that you want to edit - I only offered a viable suggestion as to how to get around the problem. I have the same beef - but I found a suitable way around the problem. Is no longer an issue for me.

  • Help! Can't edit tags, everything is grayed out.

    Hey there.
I've recently got a new laptop and my iTunes library is located on an external hard drive. When I try to edit a single song (via "Get Info") I cannot change anything, everything is grayed out. However, it allows me to change the information when I select multiple songs (strange).
I thought it might be due to "read only" files, but they files are not "read only". It says I have full reading and writing permission, I can edit the tags through WinAmp, but why can't I edit tags through iTunes?
Not all the songs are grayed out though, the songs that I've recently ripped I can edit freely in iTunes.
I'm using the latest iTunes version 7.5 and Windows Vista.

The the music folder on the external drive was created on another computer, it is possible that Vista does not regard it as yours and has not granted write permission.
Here is some help on permissions in Vista:
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/2464a180-e5dc-45d1-a2b8-3c8a 2b571e9d1033.mspx
You need to check that your account has full control rights on your music folder.
ANother possiblity although unlikely, is that your music files have somehow been made read only, you can check this by looking at the properties for a problem file.

  • Adding iTunes RSS tags via WordPress

I am new to iTunes and I would like to add the RSS tags that are being requested by Apple. Is there a tutorial or previous thread (can't find one) that covers how to add iTunes RSS tags via WordPress?

I am not familiar with WordPress enough to know if it allows you manually configure/edit your RSS feed. However, there may be a plugin for Wordpress that takes care of it for you.
If you are able to manually edit your feed, consult that Spec here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/techspecs.html
If not, and you cannot find a plugin, use FeedBurner.com. That way you have one feed (http://feeds.feedburner.com/indiecinema for example) and can change the actual feed without having to make subscribers re-subscribe to a new feed if your feed ever changes.

  • ITunes Country Keeps Changing with iTunes Match

I moved & my iTunes Match is registered to a different iTunes store than the one I want use on Apple TV.
It used to work with the Apple TV being in one country & iTunes Match in another without signing out but now it keeps changing the store for the entire Apple TV.
Is there any workaround or way to fix this?

I've found it's better if you sort the list view by "album by artist" rather than just "album" (by clicking on the heading to cycle through the options). Then the tracks stay in their proper order regardless if iTunes has helpfully(!) edited the new "album artist" field.
Still, I'd rather it didn't edit tags without telling me. It's not quite cricket....

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?
