ITunes 11: "Group Albums" feature gone?

In the previous version of iTunes (10) there was an option "Group Albums" in Grid View. When showing all the albums, this would group them according to e.g. the artist (the albums of each artist would be grouped and start on a "new line" in the grid). I couldn't find this option in the new iTunes 11, is that no longer possible?

As I have posted somewhere, I completely agree: navigate in the album view is almost impossible if the albums could not be grouped into categories (I used to do it by genre). I like the new album view, but not at the cost of loosing the hability of grouping.
Please, Apple developers, increasing usability implies to offer possibilities to a software, not remove them.

Is there any chance that the album view will have the grouping album function restored in future updates?  This is a feature that I found very helpful as my music library is very large.

I have this issue.  Album artwork was totally fine before.  After this update, it is all messed up and even got messed up when transferred to my iphone.
iTunes doesn't have the artwork anymore, but then iPhone has it but shows wrong artwork with wrong albums.
    Please fix!

NEW itunes... album cover collapse option gone??
Before I could collapse the option of album covers so it was just a big list by clicking the mini triangle in that nav bar - but now it seems that the view stays with mini covers on left!!!
or its big cover flow or grid.... i just want a list of text sometimes.....

That particular little black triangle has gone...
You can however show/hide the artwork column from the view menu or by right/option(?) clicking on the column headings.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

  • ITunes 10's Album by Artist column not good for assorted artist albums

If a given album has selections done by different groups or artists, iTunes will fragment the album and create as many little groups for it as there are different performers on the album. This feature became a big problem for me with an album of big band music with presumed many different groups represented that I have and had put onto iTunes. For a few of the selections, I was able to identify the band leader (the album came from an analogue medium, a reel-to-reel tape, that had no titles or artists information) and had these names entered into iTunes. With the old iTunes version, the album would be shown in one place with all the selections in order and with a few of them showing an artist name.
I found that some of the music files were misnamed and I wanted to add names to another group of generic file names. All these changes caused iTunes to report it couldn't find the songs and needed my help to locate them again. No trouble here, as I would expect nothing less and was familiar with this from other similar cases. What was an unpleasant surprise was that the selections with identified band leaders separated off from the anonymous group and from one another, based just on the names of these band leaders. I had to slowly scan through close to 1900 songs to find the all of the stray pieces of the album.
If I didn't find all the album titles with new file names, the files would had quietly remained not found and probably would have been deleted from the iPod. ITunes doesn't alert to unfound files at startup; one has to click each name for Get Info in order to get the dialogue for locating the file again.
Even if iTunes wouldn't keep all the pieces together (and I understand why it didn't), if the Next and Previous functions would allow me to step through all the tracks of such an album, I could get by, but this is not so either. Next and Previous navigate just to the physically adjacent songs, not the logical neighbors.

I'm not sure where you were putting in the band leader information - my guess is you used Album Artist instead of just plain Artist - but I think I answered this in your other post.

Yes, this is a pain. iTunes used to show these unfound tracks more readily. THere is a script that has been around or years that will find them, though. It's "FindDeadTracks" from this page:

That all depends on what column you've sorted your tracks by. I usually sort my library by Date Added, with new tracks at the top. A new CD I've imported would be at the top and all the tracks from it together. Very easy.
Other sort columns could also keep the tracks together so you could use Previous/Next.

  • Thanks for a completely useless photo albums feature apple...

So just upgraded to iOS5, and today decided to take advantage of the new photo albums feature but moving my photos to folders that actually mean something.
Finally apple let you do this, or so i thought...
However I found that when moving the photos, it does not move them, but makes duplicates.
So i delete the original in camera roll as the whole point of the albums is to not have every photo mixed together in one giant backlog...
Now the photos are gone from all albums!
Not only that, but it seems iCloud which is supposed to backup your phone, doesn't actually back up photos.
Neither can i find anywhere on my computer (iTunes) where the backups/photos are located.
I suppose iTunes doesn't back them up automatically either?
    Thanks a lot apple.

    Apple can't hear you here.
This is where they can hear you:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
iCloud backs up your last 1000 photos if you have Photostream activated
iTunes on Windows can sync photos to a variety of Windows image apps - it depends what you have on your system. Connect the phone, click the Photos tab in iTunes, and see what options you have.

  • Sort iTunes folder by album

I have a lot of music in an iTunes folder on a backup drive. I want to be able to sometimes take some of it and replace the existing music on my iPod. iTunes, however, has organized the music on the backup drive by artist. This is fine for most albums, but for some albums it just creates a mess. For instance, to load a Christmas album where each track is by a different artist, I would have to remember each artist’s name, and use that information to find and load each individual track separately. (This is an especially huge problem for classical albums, where different tracks commonly feature different artists.) Does anyone know a way to, maybe, organize the whole iTunes folder by album instead? Or shareware that does this? It would completely solve the problem.
I believe that for future albums I can save them as compilations and they will sort more usefully. But what’s the solution for albums that iTunes has already saved?
Sorry if this is an old topic.

    ahhh, that must be it!
i see that folder but don't know how stuff got in there.
how do i mark music to go there?
or do i have to drag it manually?
    sorry--i'm a little lost
    thank u!

  • Why has iTunes seperated a album which I have copied over from my external hard drive into iTunes? How can you pull all the songs back together into one album again?

Why has iTunes seperated a album into indevidual songs, which I have copied over from my external hard drive into iTunes? How can you pull all the songs back together into one album again?

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.  If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.

  • Album list for iPhone in iTunes is missing albums from iTunes library

There are albums which appear in my iTunes library but do not appear in the album list for my iPhone while it is connected to iTunes.  The albums were recently added by being imported from a CD.
In iTunes, I click on my iPhone to open the menus and options related to syncing the iPhone.  Then, I click the tab for music.  There are four large boxes: Playlists, Artists, Genres, and Albums.  The albums for the CD that I recently imported is not listed in that box.  I cannot check the box to have it added to my iPhone.
To circumvent this, I went to my iTunes library, selected the albums, and dragged them over to my iPhone.
While the problem is solved, I don't understand why the album was not listed where it was "supposed" to be.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Sorry to learn your music lost, but let me be suspicious here; iTunes does not delete music by itself.
Given say that, you have lost music. First thing to verify is does your music is deleted from the iTunes Music Folder or is it just removed from the iTunes library.
You should do some search on your hardisk to see if you can actually found the music files. Depending of your iTunes setup, these files could be store at different location. Usually, they should be found in /User/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Artist Names. But your could use spotlight to do some research; tell us you could find on your disk any of your lost music!
Beside, there is also a feature in iTunes 7 that let you backup your music to disc if you have a DVD burner, it will take you a few minutes.

  • Album sharing gone in Aperture iPhoto

With the latest releases of Aperture and iPhoto, album sharing seems to be gone. I used to be able to go to Preferences in Aperture, share selected Albums and see them on other computers on the network in the Media brower or directly in iPhoto. Am I remembering wrong or has this feature gone away?
With Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.2.3 libraries can be opened by either, but that's not convenient for merging photos from one computer to the other. Our situation is that both my wife and I take pictures, I use Aperture and she uses iPhoto. We both create Albums and sometimes we want the other person's photos.

I just ran into the same problem. I was going to switch to Aperture completely until iPhoto went from 5 to 6. It has a lot of the new features that Aperture has but there are still some awesome features in Aperture that I can't live without. One thing Aperture is missing is that it doesn't check for duplicates when importing pics. So what I decided to do is use iPhoto as my importer (whether from a camera or folder), and then use Aperture's import menu to import the rolls or pictures I want. If you haven't tried it out yet, do so. It is really awesome since it lets you select the rolls as they are saved in iPhoto and gives you a preview of each picture.

  • What happened to the "complete album" feature

is the "complete this album" feature still valid? if so, how do you access it? also, if i buy 2 songs from the same album from the amazon mp3 store, can i "complete the album" when they are in my itunes and be able to get the rest of the album minus the 2 songs for a lower price?

If you have eligible tracks, the "complete my album" link should appear under the Quick Links at the upper-right of the iTunes Store page once you've logged in. Note that not all albums are eligible.
if i buy 2 songs from the same album from the amazon mp3 store, can i "complete the album" when they are in my itunes and be able to get the rest of the album minus the 2 songs for a lower price?
No. Sorry, but why would you expect to get a discount from Apple on purchasing the rest of the tracks when you bought the initial tracks from Amazon? In such a case it would be up to Amazon to provide the "complete the album" feature.
    Regards.

  • ITunes' ordering of albums and/or artists

When iTunes copies a CD, if there's a song or two on it with more than one artist identified, I end up with two or more separate 'albums' in the iTunes music folder. When I'm lucky these 'albums' will be listed together in the library, but just as often one ends up under 'various artists' at the end of the library, and in the Music folder it's in another folder titled 'Compilations'. Is there any way of overcoming this sort of thing and actually getting iTunes to list artists and albums in something like the same fashion as the original CD?

I use MP3tag editor before I import. You can get it free on the web, but you should donate.
My iTunes library is big and slow so it is faster to clean up before you import and you don't risk losing tracks. This editor is also able to load the tags from the filename with a wizard and also has a track numbering wizard.
I use the Album Artist field for the main artist on an album and leave the track artist as is to retain that info. If the main artist has a duet on a track, you can show that in Artist without breaking up the album. It is really the album artist field that groups albums together in the grid, but it defaults to artist if you leave album artist blank.
If there are various artists without a main artist on an album, then I make the album artist = "Various Artists". If it is a soundtrack, then I use "Soundtrack". This way, when I look throught he folders in iTunes, there are less folders to look through and the two I mentioned are all grouped together.
I use the Album by Artist sort order in the library grid and all albums are pulled together in one piece. Rarely they are not and this I can almost always fixed by going to the Sorting Tab in Get Info and filling in those fields, too.

  • Complete My Album feature not working

The “Complete My Album” feature on the iTunes store is not working when I get to the final step of actually trying to purchase the rest of the album at the reduced price.  On the home page of the iTunes store, I click on the "Complete My Album" link and I can see all of the albums eligible for completion. However, when I click on one of them (no matter if I click the little arrow, the “Complete this album for $X.XX” link, the album picture, etc.), and it takes me through to the album page with the track list, etc., my previously purchased items are not grayed out or in any way labeled as "Previously Purchased", and the album is only listed at full price.  Either way, I then click “Buy Album,” and it warns me that I have already purchased songs from the album, and it asks me to click either "complete my album" or to "purchase the full album."
HOWEVER, when I click “Complete My Album," it simply returns me back to the same album page as before - again nothing is grayed out, the album is listed at fullprice, etc.
P.S. – I have tried this with multiple albums, I’m using the most up-to-date version of iTunes, and it appears from these iTunes community forums that this problem is affecting people with both PCs and Macs.

UPDATE:  Sorry for the late response but I've been out of town.  I can copy and paste the email responses if necessary or desired, and if it's fixed already this is a moot point anyway, but basically they kept asking me for the order numbers for the two songs I already bought from the specific album I was trying to complete, which I eventually gave them - along with telling them multiple times that the Complete My Album feature wasn't working for ANY album.  They gave me two free song codes to compensate me for the two songs I bought, and then told me to go and buy the album at full price, but the ENTIRE TIME they COMPLETELY ignored that I was telling them that this wasn't an issue with one album but was a larger, seemingly systematic issue that other people were experiencing.  Even after I got the song codes I emailed them back and said AGAIN that this wasn't an isolated feature, and they just sent me the link to the apple Feedback page (http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html) and told me to submit my complaint there.
So, technically, my issue was never really "resolved," in that they never fixed the Complete My Album feature that I am aware of - or even acknowledged that anything needed fixing, but I haven't tested it since Sunday.  I've noticed they've updated to 10.4.1, but the notes don't indicate they're fixing anything about the Complete My Album feature, so I don't know.  I've heard it's working for people though...
