ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Why the video is slow and stutter on the viewer clip?

Why the video is slow and stutter when I drag the mouse on the cursor to check from left to right?
I just upgraded to imac 20" and I had never had this problem with my old mac. The old mac seemed to be smoother than this one.
The only difference was my 1 TB external hardrive is linkup using USB 2.0 this time round since I've not purchased the Firewire 800 yet. Does using USB 2.0 cause this problem?

I noticed something from my previous iMac. When I drag the cursor from left to right, there is no sound when I'm dragging. Thus, that makes me think that the absence of audio produce smoother flow. How do I disable the audio while I'm working on the viewer then?

  • ITunes / Windows Video Playback.. (what, you actualy want to WATCH vid's?)

I'm sure there are several people out there that are having the same or similar problems, but because I can't seem to find them with the exact problem I'm having, I thought a new thread would be appropriate....
Upgraded from 6 to 7 yesterday... music seems to play OK (not as good as 6, but not all the issues other people are having). Now video playback in iTunes is little more than a slideshow with audio to (almost) match.
When I go to play back any vid podcast, or other video in my library for that matter, iTunes bumps my processor up to 100% and holds it there, and the video does little more than skip and bounce through the entire playback (even if the overlay controls go away fully, the slightest mouse movement brings them back). The audio quality seems to almost follow the video, but they get away from each other (the audio was about 2 seconds ahead of the video/slide show while watching the current version of Photoshop TV). Any other video player works fine, but if I wanted to use them, I would have never installed iTunes in the first place, the idea being that the integration was the blessing.
I USED to be able to watch a video, use Photoshop CS2, have Flash 8 open behind it, After Effects running on a seperate monitor, browse the web, and play freecell all at the same time, with several background utility style apps going all at the same time with out a hickup.
After trying the IDE fix's, the sound setup fix's and any other fix's found in the discussions (and yes, reverting them after they failed to fix the problem), I'm still having an issue, and now I can't find iTunes 6 to try to get back to a good time in life... oh why oh why apple, why do you have just as many issues as windows? I had hoped for so much more....
Anyone? Any Ideas? Anyone willing to email me itunes 6 so I can get back to a better time in life? Or provide answers? I've got a horriable track record with apple (over 20 business stopping questions, and to date 0 responses) so I am about 2 minutes from giving up
Sorry apple, but this is way past frustrating... were all your win/tel beta testers using mac's?

  • [SOLVED] OpenGL video playback slow on radeonhd

    Hi,
My video playback is very slow when using OpenGL output, both in VLC and mplayer.  When using the x11 driver, the playback is normal in VLC, but in mplayer there is a problem with the aspect: the picture does not scale.
I have a Radeon mobility X1600 and an up to date Arch64. glxinfo report direct rendering, and glxgears gives about 215 FPS at the default window size (if I make it smaller, then it boosts to about 700). I don't use fglrx, since I can't put the laptop in suspend to ram mode with it - rather, I can but then I can't wake it up
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the link!
I realized that the offical Xorg ati driver also has support for my card. I just switched to it, and the mplayer problems are solved Incidentally, the glxgears count went up to about 1450. The suspend to ram also works, so I think I'll stick to this driver.
    Thanks again!

  • ITunes U video playback constantly freezes

I have 64Gb iphone 4S with plenty of free space.  iTunes U video (a Yale course in this case) constantly freezes during playback.  The video is downloaded onto the iphone, not streamed.  I do not have this problem playing the video through the video app.  I would like to be able to use the iTunes U app.  Anyone else having this problem?

Try updating to the new iTunes U app that was released today.
If that doesn't work, try testing other Yale course videos and other iTunes U videos.

  • Any kind of video playback is choppy, eventually stops

So a couple weeks ago I dropped my macbook flat, upside down, from about 3 feet up, on a wooden floor. I died a little inside. Since then, it has been acting up. Any kind of video playback (html5, flash, quicktime, etc.) is great at the beginning, but then gets choppy, and eventually just comes to a stop. The weirdest part about this, is that I can avoid this, ONLY if I constantly move the cursor around while the video is playing! You all probably think I'm an idiot, but I have done extensive testing on this, and its definitely the mouse movement (trackpad or bluetooth mouse, either way), that keeps the video playing smoothly. As well as the video playback, my computer will sometimes not wake up from sleep, and when I do an emergency shutdown (hold the power button down til it shuts off), and fire it back up, it tells me to do another emergency shutdown, and will continue to do so until i remove the battery, replace it, and start it up again.
After this "behaviour" persisted for a few days, I did an erase and re-install of snow leopard (didn't make a difference), and I also removed/replaced my hard drive and ram, just for good measure.
Please, can someone tell me what the heck is going on, and maybe give me an idea of how much this is gonna cost me to fix (as I am clearly out of warrantee)?
    Thanks so much,
    Bobby

This is all most unfortunate...from what I read in your post you have covered everything that can be done at your end....something is damaged on the Logic Board it sounds like...as to how much it would cost only the people that end repairing will know after it is diagnosed....take it in...tell them what you have found and tried so far...maybe that will help narrow down the problem...
    Good Luck....

  • Video playback slow and audio drop out after render

Problem is everytime I render ou,t the video playback is slow and the audio drops out
This happens with AVI or Quicktime files.

It sounds like you might be hitting the space bar in hopes of getting real time playback.  Sorry, but AE doesn't work like that, because it does totally different things from an editing application like Premiere.
And if you've downloaded the tryout version, you really ought to learn how AE works... and a short description is "it doesn't work intuitively".  You can frustrate yourself in a hurry.
    But this can really help;

  • HD rental video playback very choppy

I just rented the Rum Diary on my apple tv, it was playing fine until about an hour into the movie then the video got very choppy.  I tested my internet speed, it was just under 11 Mbps, can anyone tell me where i can file a complaint about this?

    Hi,
Same problem with same type series 6 Samsung TV about 2 months old.
Problem is most noticeable during fast pan scenes or anytime 2/3of the screen is doing something. Chunky, chunk, chunk.
So the trick is to just turn off all the Samsung Motion Plus stuff off?
I'll dig thru the menus and see what I can find. Is this something Apple can address?

  • ITunes stuttering video playback

I have a new HP laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit.  It has an AMD A4-5000 processor, 1.83Ghz with 4GB RAM and Radeon HD 8330 graphics.
When trying to play my videos in iTunes (encoded h.264), they are choppy and stuttery to the point of being unwatchable.  Happens with SD and HD videos.
The exact same video files play just fine in Windows Media Player on the same computer, and they play fine on my iPad 3.
    Things I have tried:
I have uninstalled all Apple software and re-installed iTunes.
I have manually installed QuickTime (I had no QuickTime icon in Control Panel after only installing iTunes).
I have installed the CCCP codec pack.
I have amended QuickTime's settings to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration, and also disabled all DirectX settings in QuickTime (i.e. "Safe Mode").
    I have manually installed DirectX

OK, so I found in another thread how to enable legacy codecs via terminal, and I did that.
After that I think there was a subjective improvement the *first* time I loaded a .mov file to view in QT X, then same old stutter and lag for that file and other formats also.
FWIW, the files seem to view OK if I use VLC. But that does not help with the protected .m4V files from ITMS.
    Anyone got any other suggestions?
Like I said, surely my MBP ought be able to play videos from iTunes, it used to be able to.

  • Video playback slow when adding titles

I'm using Premiere Elements 10 on iMac with 4 GB RAM and i7 processor, and I noticed a weird behaviour with the playback function.
Usually it works fine but, if I add a title into a video track (EDIT->New Item->Title), the playback becomes very slow and sometimes it is totally frozen. I can "scrub" the timeline without any problem, but it seems that the "play" button stops working. It happens with simple video clips too.
Have you ever experienced similar issues on a Mac?
    Thank you.

    Bruno,
    Great news!
Rendering is often mis-understood, as with some footage/Projects, and some editing operations, it is not really necessary for adequately smooth playback. I often have SD Projects, where I will never bother to Render anything, as it is smooth enough, without Rendering. However, and especially when doing Keyframed Effect animation, I might Render a section of my Timeline many dozen times, to test with the best playback. With HD material/Projects, especially if one does not have a "killer" computer, Rendering might be more necessary, and more often. This ARTICLE goes into more detail.
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • Streaming video playback is choppy

    Hello,
I'm own an Aluminum Powerbook, OS 10.3.9. Before I reformatted, the play back via Firefox and Camino was just fine. Now it's choppy and it skips. Is there anyway to fix this problem?
    Thank you.
    -S

Don't use Camino or Firefox on Youtube.
    Flashplayer 9 is crap.
I find Safari works on Youtube for me. Also try Mozilla 1.x or Netscape 7.
Flash 9 loves Safari,AOL for Mac,Firefox 1.x, and Netscape 7 not anything else!
Also depending on the video you are viewing it won't matter.
Some videos uploaded are bad quality.
Too bad you can't use Tiger as it has beta 10 of Flash and runsin Camino(choppy still) and Safari 3(great).
Sadly it is beta and most sites won't tell it's installed.

It worked perfectly with iTunes 6. It's just stopped since the download.

  • ITunes 7 Video Playback Problems

I've been looking through this message board and haven't been able to find a post where this question was already asked, so I hope I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. With iTunes 7 (and the new Quicktime), all the mp4 videos on my computer will play only audio, while the video consists of either a blank window or a jumble of flashing bright colors laced with an occasional snippet of the video. All of these videos worked perfectly prior to the updates. Interestingly, there is one exception to this: all of the episodes of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" (Season 2) play perfectly, for no apparent reason. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the applications, but that doesn't work, nor does merely trying to play them in Quicktime rather than through iTunes itself. Please let me know if there is ANY way to fix this, as I have invested a lot of time and money into my video collection! Thanks.
      Windows XP

I would like to get some more information on this. Please try these steps:
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Go to: Start menu > Control Panels > QuickTime.
    3. Click on the Advanced tab.
    4. Un-check the checkbox next to "Enable Direct3D video acceleration".
    5. Open iTunes.
    6. Play the video.
    Does the issue occur?
I also need to get some information from the affected systems:
    1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\QuickTime.
    2. Double-click on QTInfo.
    3. Click on the yellow question mark icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Save Log.
    4. Save that file somewhere.
    5. Attach that file to an email, and send it to me. Please also let me know the results of the steps above.

  • CS4 HD video playback is choppy...need new computer?

Greetings.  I'm running CS4 on a Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 1GB Nvidia, 150GB 5400RPM harddrive + external 1TB WD passport drive.  The details for my current laptop can be found here:
    http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=ASUS+X83VM-X2&hl=en&safe=off&cid=2602547068299286 283&os=tech-specs
Even after rendering an HD timeline to green, my laptop can't playback without stuttering, and eventually smooths out after you replay the clip two or three times.  I don't know if that's the cache slowly remembering the playback or whatever reason that may be (??) but I've read here and there that the great thing about Intel i7 processors is that certain types are Quad Core, where supposedly the big performance difference is seen when handling HD.  Obviously, there are many factors, but would a quad upgrade be the main solution to my problem?  Below is the link to another ASUS that I could see myself getting for this i7 upgrade:
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6891953&csid=IT D&body=MAIN
You might notice that the harddrive speeds for both laptops are 5400.  I've read on the forums that video editing "tears 5400RPM drives apart"....I don't know if they meant "high definition" video editing, or just video editing.  I've been piece together 480p and stretched-fake HD clips for quite some time, and nothing was torn up.  HD I might believe...and so, do I need a 7200rpm harddrive for HD editing, or does the quad pretty much cover my solution?
Sorry if this is a lot to ask..it is vague, I agree.
Let me know what you think,
    Thanks,
    hunta

Yes, so first thing I see is that budget is definitely an issue.
While the TigerDirect link is exactly what I would need, the price is not.  In that case, it's not too big of a deal if I can't bring my editing PC with me.
I googled a variety of desktop quad i7's you can look at here:  http://www.google.com/search?q=4gb+ddr3+ram&hl=en&tbm=shop&aq=f#q=quad+core+i7+desktop&hl= en&safe=off&tbm=shop&ei=ln5vTu7ACdOnsAKj7sHsCQ&start=0&sa=N&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.&fp =718be28aab5acfc7&biw=1280&bih=681
And would one like this be an acceptable equivalent to the laptops you guys are recommending?
    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=XPS-8300-I734-R&utm_source=GoogleProducts&utm_medi um=ShoppingSites&utm_campaign=XPS-8300-I734-R
Additionally, for budget's sake, 8GB is a good start for me.  16GB can come later.
When you recommend two SATA drives, does that relate to the whole RAID setup thing? I watched a video explaining that one, but am not quite sure how I would configure two internatl 7200rpm SATA drives to work with each other that way.  Getting two SATA wouldn't be an issue either, since I could just take the tower apart and slap in a cheap 7200 found here:  http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&q=7200rpm&gs_upl=1446457l1447988l0l1 448814l7l7l0l0l0l0l415l2170l2-4.2.1l7l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.&biw=1280&bih=681&um=1& ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7227007111886761763&sa=X&ei=O4RvTs6fEqWqsAKHzNDvCQ&ved=0CIgBEPMCMAA
I should probably make sure that the two SATA drives are by the same manufacturer?
    Thanks for responding so quickly!
