ITunes 11: "Movies" vs. "Home Videos"

So when in the "Movies" section of iTunes, there are views including Unwatched, Genres, Movies, Home Videos, and List. I want to move some video content from "Home Videos" to "Movies". How do I do this?

Note that in iTunes 11, it's probably an oversight that you can't target "home videos" in smart playlists.
If you edit a smart playlist and try to target Media Kind is/isn't <type>, the offered types are TV shows, movies, etc. but not home videos. Therefore you can't build smart playlists that specifically target (or don't target) home videos.
Yet. Hopefully they'll fix it in 11.0.1.

  • Is there a way to make Movies and Home Videos show up in different sections on the apple tv instead of showing the home videos mixed in with the movies?

I have several movies and home videos stored in itunes, when viewing these on appletv, it mixes all the movies and home videos together.
I would like to beable to select either Movies or Home Videos when viewing on the Apple TV if this is possible...?

    You have 2 options:
    1. Create Video Playlists in iTunes (for example create one for Home movies, the other for Movies)
You COULD make these Smart Playlists. (see below for one technique)
NOTE: If you wish to do this don't miss the preference in Settings to enable Video Playlists at least  (at least in the latest ATV updates) I believe it's under Audio setting. Amazingly the default is NOT to show!! (had me going for quite a bit)
    2. Set up your Home Movies as "Music Videos" This has some gotchas:  like you'll probably want to choose the skip when shuffiling, also Now they'll appear in music lists. The only advantage to this is that it makes playlists more available on iOS devices since there are no Playlists displayed in the Videos App.... (yeah Apple's made this WAY confusing of late)
If you wish to keep these clearly defined (especially for use with Smart Playlists.
    Select the movie
Get Info (Edit Menu) (or Command-I Mac, Control-I, PC)
Choose the "Video" Tab - you can select your desired type from the Media Kind pop up.
Alternate method for setting up smart playlist of home movies would be to set the Genre to "Home Movie"
Probably more than you needed to know - leigh

  • HOW DO I MOVE HOME MADE VIDEOS THAT ARE IN MOVIES TO HOME VIDEO...

HOW DO I MOVE HOME MADE VIDEOS THAT ARE IN MOVIES TO HOME VIDEO. THIS PROBLEMS OCCURS IN WIN XP PRO OR MAC 10.6.8 CAN'T COPY AND PASTE, CAN'T IMPORT OR ADD TO LIBRARY; CAUSE IT IS ALREADY IN LIBRARY. I NOTICE THAT THESE SIMILAR ISSUES HAVE BEEN POSTED SINCE DEC 2012 AND NO ONE AND APPLY HAS NOT ADDRESS THESE CONCERNS. ANY IDEAS?!?!

Due to Hotmail Live being POP based there is limitations on it. Not much can be done to get these folders on iPhone till Hotmail Live switches to an IMAP format.
Posted below is the link to the Hotmail blog with what's coming etc. This is ran by Microsoft. So might be your best resource and place to try and reach them to submit feedback.

  • How do I move my home videos to Movies from the TV Shows category in iTunes?

In itunes on my iMac, most, but not all, of my home videos and homemade slide shows have been saved in the TV shows directory rather than the movies directory.  I've tried to move them to the movies directory in iTunes, but they won't be moved.  How can I move them, and then have the moves reflected on my iPad?

Select the shows in your TV Shows library.  You can select several adjacent shows at once by holding the shift key.  If they are not adjacent, hold the command key and click on each.  Open the Multiple Item Info window (File menu > Get Info or type commamd + I).  Select the "Options" tab.  Check media kind and use the adjacent menu to select Movie.  Cloick "OK" to save your changes.  The shows should automatically move to the Movies library.

  • IPad Video app mixes Movies and Home Video Kinds

In iTunes I have videos that are of 'Video Kind' Movie and also 'Video Kind' Home Video.  These show up nicely on the AppleTV, segregated according to their "Kind".  On my iPad Air, however, the Video app mixes them all together under its heading of "Movies" when I use Home Sharing to access my iTunes Library from the iPad.
How can I get my Home Videos to be distinguished from my Movies on the iPad?
(And, is there any way to have the title show up on the thumbnail page?  In combination I have thousands of shows and it's hard to tell what's what!)

    Hello Brian,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an issue playing iTunes Store content on your iPad Air, and you’ve already tried restarting the device and syncing the movies a second time. If you haven’t already, try backing up and restoring the device as shown in the article linked below.

  • Movies vs home videos

I am currently using iTunes 12 on my early Intel Power Mac. I have a lot of movies in my iTunes collection. It used to be that iTunes put them in "movies." Now it puts them in "home videos." Why did it change? Is there any way to transfer movies from one to the other? Having two separate libraries is a pain.

Select the item in iTunes, right-click and get info. Go to the options tab and from the media kind pull-down menu. Note: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3708074 - it may be necessary to turn off other services such as Match.

  • Can't get iTunes to add a (home) video to the library.

Adding a video to iTunes.  "Help" (HA!) says to use Menu/File/Add File to Library or drag and drop, just like an audio file.  Neither works for me.  If I drag and drop, iTunes will create an empty playlist with the filename of the video; no file, just the name.  iTunes v11.0.2.26

MY problem is I can see the vids I've added... I can easily add them to play lists... and when I click on one, I can see it play in iTunes... But, even tho all these vids are in a playlist, only one will play at a time... so, no matter what I do, I can't get the next vid in the playlist to play sequentailly.
Vids I've purchased from Apple work just fine..... go figure.
I SUSPECT this is Apple's way of telling us to forget about home made vids, and ONLY use vids purchased in the iTunes store....

  • How to convert .mp4 files that come into iTunes as Movies into Music Videos

I've tried selecting a file and then going into the "Get Info", then "Options" and then to "Media Kind", but for some reason it is greyed out and I am unable to change these .mp4's into music videos.  Any suggestions are SO appreciated!!!

Ok, I checked and the file is NOT locked.  Any other suggestions?  It shows the file as an MPEG-4 movie .mp4, but I just can't get it to change from a movie to a music video so that I can see the artist.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Why won't iTunes 11 import my home videos?

Everytime I drag a video into iTunes, it does nothing. Everytime I click on file>add file to library> and add my video, still, nothing happens. My videos have always been in the same standard MP4 videos that have previously been successfully imported into iTunes 10... please help me

Same problem, i cant figure out what it is and its really starting to get on my nerves.

  • Can't sync home videos to iPad "itunes 11"

Since updating to iTunes 11 I can't sync any of my home videos from my Win 7 PC to my iPad 3.
    1. I created them as MP4's.
    2. They import to iTunes music folder fine.
    3. They show in iTunes under home videos.
    4. No error during or after sync, but the videos are not there on the iPad. Videos I put on the iPad before iTunes 11 are there (under movies, not home video) and play fine. But if I delete it from the iPad and then try to put it back it is ignored and will not go back onto the iPad.
This worked fine before iTunes 11.

I also found, finally, that selecting "manually manage" for the device on the summary page in iTunes for the helped.

  • Imported Movies Categorized as "Home Video"

iTunes 11 apparently defaults to categorizing movies newly ripped from DVDs as "Home Videos." Which is annoying, and a fail compared to 10. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

I'm not currently a Mac myself, so I don't have a 'Home Videos' or 'Movies' folder (although that might be helpful for the Mac people)...  All of my movies are in different folders depending on the title, genre, etc...  I just drag video files from the folder into iTunes.
The weird thing is, when I change them from 'Home Video' to 'Movie', that info doesn't get permanently stored.  If I remove the movie from iTunes, and then drag it back in, it's placed as a 'Home Video' again.  So I can't even find a way to permanently change an .m4v file to be a 'Movie'...  I suspect it's the DRM applied to iTunes Store movies that somehow embeds the media type...
I just want the default to be 'Movies' instead of 'Home Videos'...  All the studio films I'm loading in iTunes are hardly _my_ 'Home Videos'...  I'm pretty sure no one in my family can fly or shoot laser beams out of their eyes...    The most common use should be the default.  Most video files in most people's iTunes are most likely movies...

  • Import home videos onto ITunes

How can i import my home videos/ DVDs onto Itunes just as you can import your audio CDs onto Itunes?

I had home videos that were sat in my iTunes library no problem but I couldn't get them across to my iPhone, even putting them in their own playlist, ticking all the right tabs in the synch menu etc. After a lot of playing around I found that if you right click on the video, select Get Info, go to Options and then in 'Media Kind', manually change it to Music Video and it will then happily go into the music videos playlist and will synch straight across.
    Hope this helps.

  • Moving home videos to the ipad

how do you import a home video on a laptop to the ipad?  When dragged to the itunes folder nothing happens.

What you have done is to add the movie to Itunes on the computer not your iPad
To get it on your iPad either Click on the Device name to the left of the Itunes Store Button. Or enable the Sidebar View > Show Sidebar in the main menu and then click on your device
On the right hand side will  be the Device Sync pages. Select Movies ( Movies and Home Videos should appear together) choose the movie you want to go onto the ipad and click Apply bottom right.

  • Itunes bought movies/tv shows not displaying in my authorized mac mini

I have a Mac mini (mid 2011) 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 running OSX 10.9.4 working as a media server, it has been authorized to run all the media I buy from my iTunes account. It is connected to a SHARP TV monitor through the HDMI port and had wired (Gigabite LAN) to several Apple TV around my house.
Problem is that I cannot watch the movies/TV shows I have bought in the iTunes store, music and home videos play perfectly in this computer +monitor.
The same movies/TV shows I can play through my several Apple TVs without a glitch. Does anyone have any idea regarding this?

    Hello alarife,
You may need to verify that the cable in use and the TV both support HDCP.
