ITunes 11 not switchable to Discrete Graphics

Hello!
I'm trying to switch iTunes to use the Discrete Graphics chip instead of the Integrated Graphics. That's especially interesting when running the visualizer @ full screen 2560x1600 res. Various other apps (Photoshop, Chrome...etc.) support switching. Any thoughts on why that doesn't seem possible?
Thank you

I've also tried to reinstall iTunes and remove the whole Library so it will open a completely empty library with new installation of iTunes, and even that doesn't help. All the permissions for the iTunes folders are present.

  • T510 w/ NVIDIA NVS 3100M -- Window 7 not recognizing discrete graphics card

    Hi --
I just got a T510 w/ discrete graphics card, ie, the NVIDIA NVS 3100M w/ 512mb of dedicated video memory.
However, when I look in "Performance Information and Tools" under the "View and print detailed performance and system information", I see the graphics as "Intel(R) HD Graphics". Under the "Graphics" section I see this:
    Graphics
    Display adapter type
    NVIDIA NVS 3100M
    Total available graphics memory
    1696 MB
          Dedicated graphics memory
    64 MB
          Dedicated system memory
    0 MB
          Shared system memory
    1632 MB
    Display adapter driver version
    8.17.12.5738
    Primary monitor resolution
    1920x1080
    DirectX version
    DirectX 10
This is a bit confusing, because now it says the adapter is NVIDIA, but the dedicated memory is only 64 MB. Seems odd as I should have 512MB?
    Thanks

I'm fairly certain you can force Optimus to be discrete only or integrated onlyin the BIOS or in some of the Power Manager settings. Otherwise, you can try loading DirectX and seeing what dxdiag tells you about your graphics card.
In addition, Lenovo's implementaiton of Optimus seems to allow you to run certain programs on the IGP and other programs on the discrete chip simultaneously, so it may simply be allocating the Windows benchmark thread to the IGP instead of the NV chip, thereby causing the flawed readings. Don't know exactly how one forces a process to run using the discrete GPU though.

  • Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client using discrete graphics on Mac

    Hello,
I use your Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client to connect to my University's VPN. The programme is supplied to me by my University so I presume it licenses it for its students such as myself.
I am writing to let you know the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client uses the discrete graphics card on my MacBook Pro whenever it is running. I cannot quit the Client, that will end my VPN session, but at the same time using the discrete graphics card is a drain on the battery for no good reason; Cisco AnyConnect does not display any visuals that I am aware would require the use of an NVidia Kepler card with 1GB VRAM. The application's code perhaps needs to be rectified so it does not depend on the discrete graphics card when clearly (as the attachments show) it does not need a discrete graphics card to render its very simple interface.
    Cheers.

If your company has the Cisco IPSec protocol open you can use the Mac's built-in VPN settings.
However, if those ports are blocked by your local service (Starbucks or w/e) then you will have to use the AnyConnect VPN, which is done over SSL (https).

  • Onboard/discrete graphics not switching properly

I have a 2010 15" MBP i7, and I very rarely can get the discrete graphics to engage. Even when using graphics-intensive processes the MBP would continue to use the intel board. I just installed gfxCardStatus, which does allow me to trigger onboard/discrete whenever I want (or power-dependent), but I'd like to know if anyone else has discovered their MBP not switching, and if they were able to remedy it without third-party software...

I believe so long as the video card you are getting supports this, it is possible. I have never done it myself, but I seem to remember reading about it as part of crossfire.

  • Macbook pro 15 discrete graphics not showing in the about this mac tab

I am new to osx. I was wondering why I couldnt find the discrete graphics info in the about this mac window. It simply says intel hd 4000. I was wondering whether or not I need some drivers for it.

I assume you mean under the "Display" tab when you click "About this Mac" > More Info...
This only shows the active graphics card. To see the full specs, open "System Information," either under "Overview" Tab > System Report, or from the Apple Icon in the menu bar by holding down the option key and clicking "System Information." Under hardware > Graphics/Displays

  • Discrete graphics card not detected.

    First post.
    System specs:
    Mobo: MSI Z77A-GD55
CPU: Intel Ivy Bridge i5 3570K
    GPU: eVGA GTX 580
    PSU: NZXT Hale82 750W 80 Certified
    RAM: G Skill Sniper Series 1866 8Gb DD3
SSD: Corsair Force Series GT 240G
For starters, I was running a CoolerMaster 1000W PSU and the eVGA 580 GTX in my old system. Upon upgrading, I transferred those units to the new system but can not boot up system with GTX 580. Onboard graphics work fine, so I went ahead and installed Windows onto the SSD with no problems. Once in Windows, I installed the latest Motherboard updates, and even flashed the BIOS to latest 1.4 build. Still no luck with the graphics card working on boot up.
    Things I've tried:
    - GTX 580 boots up and works fine (hence the system running now) on older Motherboard.
-Ruling out a defective GPU unit.
    - Both Coolermaster and NZXT PSU run the GTX 580 on older Motherboard.
-Ruling out a defective PSU unit.
    - Graphics card (GTX 580) would not boot up on ASUS P8Z77-V Pro Motherboard, nor the new one MSI Z77A-GD55
     -Possibly ruling out defective Motherboards.
    - Replaced i5 3570k CPU with yet another i5 3560k CPU (Same issue)
     -Ruling out a defective CPU
    - When using onboard VGA, I can get into the BIOS and the Graphics settings are set to PEG (PCI-E Graphics). Although when I shut down and install my GtX 580, still no boot up.
    - Moved the GTX 580 between the 2 top PCI-E slots, to no avail.
    - Moved 1 stick of RAM between the 4 DIMM slots and still not working.
-Reseated graphics card and made sure the 8-pin and 6-pin connectors were firmly intact.
I have done a lot of research, but have yet to find a definitive answer to my problem. I'm not ruling out a 3rd motherboard that may be defective, but I feel this is highly unlikely. Again, everything works and checks out in the system specs with the onboard graphics enabled.
I thought I'd try here to get some addition ideas from the group. Thanks for reading.

Try this; Shutdown, remove the discrete card, connect to the onboard, restart and boot all the way into Windows, restart to the UEFI/BIOS, change the graphics setting to IGD, save and enter, let it reboot into Windows, hard shutdown. Restart into UEFI/BIOS, change graphics setting to PEG, save and enter first, then hit the reset button and enter immediately back into the UEFI/BIOS checking to make sure the PEG setting is in fact set, then hard shutdown. Install the discrete card connecting all the power cables and monitor cable, start and see if it now boots into Windows with the graphics now working.
This merry-go-round procedure worked for me on 3 Z68's, no reason it won't work on a Z77.
I will try this procedure now. If it works, I will have to buy you lunch because I have NEVER heard of such hoopla!

  • Discrete graphics card not switching off - kernel 3.18

    Hi there,
I'm currently running Archlinux on an Acer 4820TG laptop with two graphics card: Intel (onboard) and AMD Radeon HD 6550M.
After upgrade to kernel version 3.18.2-2-ARCH, the command echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch that I've been using doesn't switch the discrete graphics card off.
This way battery drains rather rapidly
    Additional info:
    Intel driver: xf86-video-intel 2.99.917-1
    Radeon driver: xf86-video-ati 1:7.5.0-1
    Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

This happened to me whenever I was trying to run 3dsMax Design 2013 in Optimus mode, everytime I attempted to open that program it would simply refuse and say the nvidia driver had just crashed.
It was solved with nvidia 305.93 I think (I currently run 331.82 which is the latest) look for the most up to date driver at the nvidia drivers download page.
That is really an nvidia driver related problem but you should also update your Intel video card driver too as previously suggested. (and if the program that is crashing is an Autodesk product be sure to be up to date too (with all the nuances that it implies), I'm currently running 3dsmax 13 PU6 and it works)
So what you need to do is to uninstall your nvidia driver completely, reboot, install the most up to date from nvidia. reboot, via windows update install the lates Intel video driver (if something appears) (don't install it from the intel web site). In device manager my intel driver appears to be 9.17.10.2843
(Maybe it didn't work the last time for you because maybe you didn't perform a clean installation)

  • Lenovo T400 missing "discrete graphics" in Bios

Hello guys, i'm new in the lenovo users community!
i just bought from a friend a lenovo t400 that has installed in it the OS windows XP... and i was reading in forums and other places that this lenovo has a switchable graphic card. for another one that is the ATI 3450 i think..
I know that the windows Vista has the capability of making the switch very easily. but now im working in a company with my laptop and cant install this OS.
i've read that i can do it via BIOS, but when i go BIOS > Config > Display .. i only see 2 options... select the port (internal / PCI Express) and the Monitor thing (Thinkpad, digital, etc)..
I've seen in forums that there are another 2 choices (for discrete graphics and OS detection) but those seems to be missing in the Bios...
What do i need to do?
    What can i do?
I want to use this other graphic card... Can anyone Help?
    Thanks a lot

Your laptop may not have the switchable graphics option installed. Check to see what is in your system through Lenovo.com/support/warnty-look.
Some units did not ship with switchable graphics option.

  • Discrete Graphics on the t410s, when will it be released in the USA?

I'm in the market for a new laptop now and I would like to purchase the t410s but I was wondering when the discrete graphics with the nvidia will be available?
It is not available in the customiZation page at lenovo.com for the USA.
I have heard various stories of it being delayed, to lenovo not releasing it ever in the USA.
Also, I will be editing videos (I like make movies for fun) and ripping DVD movies with this machine. Does the videocard make a big difference in these procedures?

Just to report that I could just order the T410s with switchable graphics yesterday through the dedicated website of a US university under "educational" pricing. It is the combination of I5 540 and Nvidia switchable graphics. I tried to ask the representative if the switching is manual or based on the automatic Nvidia Optimus approach, and he asked his "tech experts", but couldn't produce a convincing answer, only saying "yes yes, it'll be switched by software".
I placed the order anyway, hoping that if it's not there now it may be in a driver update later. Estimated delivery time is currently May 4, let's see whether the Nvidia will eventually make it lapse further ...

  • T420 problem with NVIDIA discrete graphics

I recently purchased a T420 with NVIDIA NVS 4200M graphics card. However, I couldn't find the option for switchable graphics, which I believe is supposed to be located in the power management tool. I tried to switch to using discrete graphics in the bios, but it doesn't seem to be working still.
I re-installed windows 7, and all the required drivers, but didn't change the fact that I couldn't get the discrete graphics working. Also when I tried to open a webGL demo in firefox, I was told that the browser doesn't support webGL when it did initially before I re-installed windows.
I'm not sure what exactly the problem is, and would greatly appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As far as i know the T420 got Optimus and not switchable graphics. Optimus will use the Nvidia when needed and you cannot switch manually unless you decide to disable optimus by chosing a fixed settin in BIOS (discrete/integrated). I have not used a laptop with Optimus yet, but i think you can manually choose to use the Nvidia per application.
Are you sure you got all the drivers installed? Did you use system update to install the drivers?
You could try to type "about:config" int the address bar in Firefox, then search for "webgl" and change "webgl.enabled_for_all_sites" to "True". If it doesn't exist you can create this value. Also you could try to change "webgl.force-enabled" to "True". If you cannot make it work it sounds like a video driver issue.
Does webgl work in Chrome or any other browser?

  • T400 Missing Discrete Graphics

After I updated my windows vista, the ATI discrete graphic seems to be missing. Left the Intel graphics in operation.
I tried to switch the graphic but I couldn't found there is any option for ATI graphics. It is like totally missing...
When i run the ATI Catalyst, an error message popped out, stating that the Catalyst is not supporting the current active graphic processor.
    Any solution??

Try running System Update; it'll bring all of the relevant drivers up-to-date with the latest ones for Windows 7.
(However, Windows 7 does not support resuming from standby properly with switchable graphics; both GPUs are powered on afterwards and need to be toggled. A potential solution using Catalyst 10.10 has been reported.)

  • T500 with discrete graphics card availability

Im close to purchasing a T500 but have 3 questions.
1.) The T500 with discrete graphics no longer appears available on the canadian site. Can anyone confirm when it is likely to return?
2.) I want to get the keyboard change to the T61 (I have used the T500 keyboard and it is not fantastic) Can I order this when I place my order for the T500?
    Cheers
    Peter

    1) When you are in the advanced mini dock, the displayport is active, so is your VGA and DVI. I am using the displayport on the laptop driving a Dell U2410 at WUXGA resolution, and the DVI port on the dock is driving another Dell U2410 LCD.
However, if you have a switchable graphics card and you switch to intel gpu, then the dvi port on the dock is disabled, only the the vga would work.
    2) To your question of your the laptop's vga and displayport driving these monitors the answer is yes. The VGA on the T500 should be able to drive a WQXGA (not recommended as the picture quality is heavily degraded) and the displayport can also drive WQXGA.

  • Lenovo W530 - Stuck at "Loading initial ramdisk" GRUB Discrete graphic

As in the thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146006 (only that I do not have any encryption on my drive) I cannot get my ThinkPad W530 booting (I have installed via EFI) with Discrete graphics mode (set in BIOS). NVIDIA Optimus works with optirun and Integrated graphics works fine but I cannot start with Discrete graphics.
I want to do this since I cannot connect an external monitor to my computer at all right now (the Mini DisplayPort and VGA adapter are only physically connected to the NVIDIA card). I have tried following several more or less incomplete guides on how to start a second X server with bumblebee but I cannot get those working and do not see two X servers a a good solution. I want a virtual display that spans over two monitors. I tried booting the computer with an Ubuntu Live USB stick and it automatically connected and used both monitors (when I set Discrete graphics in the BIOS) even in the installation process, and I can run games like StarCraft II just fine on my Arch install with optirun (when I set NVIDIA Optimus in the BIOS) so the hardware seems to work just fine.
When I boot the regular Arch linux kernel (3.17.1-1-ARCH) with Discrete graphics I get to the message "Loading initial ramdisk...", then the screen turns black. My system is using GDM for login and Gnome as window manager.
I managed to login blindly (not sure if it was through GDM or Ctrl + Alt + F2 since I tried both) during the black screen and execute a command that I later found in my .zsh_history file and I also can see that the drive access led is blinking a while after the black screen so it seems that the system has not hanged entirely. If I disable GDM the screen does not turn black but freezes at the "Loading initial ramdisk..." output.
My /boot/grub/grub.cfg file is (I am not trying to boot with the linux-ck or linux-rt kernel that I also have installed):

  • 2011 Macbook Pro and Discrete Graphics

    Hi Everyone
I am writing to give an update on this issue. Just to recount... my MBP Early 2011 went into the white screen of death mode in mid-December. I had immediately taken it in for check up and diagnostics at a Apple Service Centre in Kolkata. After paying Rs. 2400/- they called me and confirmed the diagnostics, which I had already pointed out to them. After that I could not access the hard drive for almost 20 days, and later I managed to install the Snow Leopard that had shipped with the MBP when I bought it. In the meantime I had been reading each and every post that has got posted here, and somehow the restart with the 'twist' trick worked for me to install Mountain Lion.
But all this with disabled graphics and very low performance.
I contacted apple about a week and half back and the customer service rep. on the phone advised me to take the MBP to a nearest service centre and tell them the problem along with this forum. I told the rep. that this is now a know issue and thousands of people are suffering not just loss of money but faith in apple and more importantly productivity, as we use this computer for all our main work. The rep. was very helpful, and raised a case and encouraged me to go into the service provider.
Last week I took the MBP to the service provider in Hyderabad, RSG Infotech. The rep. there spoke the script that we usually hear: that they will have to check, they will have to run diagnostics, it will cost minimum amount to get it checked since its out of warranty etc. I patiently heard everything. Then I told him the specific issue, told him the history of this and also said that apple has told me to come there. I gave the case number to them and showed this community. Fortunately the MBP was going through a display hang where the safari browser kept on refreshing without anything, and the rep. saw it and said yes its a gpu issue. So, I asked him to contact apple and let me know. He called me up after two days and gave a quotation for Rs. 45000/- for changing the battery (for it had swilled-up), the magsafe port and the logic board. I told him to wait for my call.
I then contact apple on phone. The customer rep. was very patient and helpful. He said that there is an open case against my earlier call and he would transfer the call to his senior. The supervisor too listened to me and asked a few questions. She was again very polite and helpful, and asked for some time to get the hardware diagnostics from the service provider. After half an hour she called me back and said that the battery will be replaced free of charge. She asked for a day to respond to the logic board issue. Yesterday she called me and told that apple is going to take care of the other parts free of cost, and I would have to bear the cost of minimum service Rs. 1500/- I agreed to it. I also asked her what the warranty period of the replaced parts would be. She said that it would be 90 days and I could take the MBP back to the service provider if any problem occurs.
Now I am waiting for the call from the service provider. This whole process shows 2 things, first that apple is serious about its customer care, and second that they know about this issue but will only address it case by case. The whole picture seems to be that apple is ready to help but you need to go pass the first rung of customer care, and tell them specifically to raise this issue to higher ups in the hierarchy. Since we have been using apple products for a long time, and since the company can help us out reliably I thing everyone must contact apple on phone or through the service centres to get a case opened. Only then will apple understand the extent of this problem. I am not sure about the third party solutions of rebelling/reflowing in India. Since anything apple in India is a very highly priced product and they would charge you money only to have a look at it !
Will keep everyone posted on this

    Hey!
I ran into the exact same issue around the same time like you. I have a early 2011 MBP 15", and the same issue arose. First, my external monitor (and laptop monitor) screen shifted like in your first shot. It happened a couple of times, unplugging/plugging the external monitor would help solve it. I restarted the comp and it didn't happen.
Tomorrow, though, the screen started exhibiting worse issues like you described. Lock ups, screen tearing, graphics glitches etc. I tried to localize the problem to be a software one, but failed. Althought Windows was stable, it also started showing glitches, and eventually they started appearing on the recovery partition as well.
I sort of identified the issue to be with the discrete graphics, as switching to integrated didn't cause the problems.
I brought it into the service center, where they noticed my laptop heats up substantially more than they would expect. They ran a couple of tests, many of which failed because my laptop locked up.
They offered two procedures: one is to switch out the logic board, which is the usual path they would take, and the other one (cheaper) was to actually re-solder in the graphics chip. They said it was a bit detached and not soldered well to the board. Either as a result of falling damage (a slight fall happened, but a very long while ago and I never had issues after that - I slipped while the laptop was in my backpack) or heating over time, it got fuzzed up. I had them do the resoldering and the laptop worked fine for about 10 days, and now it's acting up again.
I'll go for the logic board solution, but if you find any solutions, let me know. If you're interested, I can ping in with the results of the procedure.

  • ITune not recognising iPod touch, on and off.

Okay, this is not the usual iTunes not recognising the iPod.
I had this problem when I first set up my iPod. After a full uninstall and reinstall of iTunes, as described in the support article, my iPod was recognised. Now I have added more music to my collection, and a couple of the apps need updating I wanted to update my iPod. I connected my iPod and nothing, it does not show in iTunes. It is showing in my computer as a camers which I really wish it would stop doing. Also when my iPod was connected the first time I set up to allow it to wirelessly update and it won't do that either.
I am stuck on what else to do. I just hope I am not going to have to do a full uninstall and reinstall every time I want to update my iPod, because it rather defeats the purpose.
I have read and followed the instructions here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/assistant/itunes/
I have even de-authorised and re-authorised my account as suggested at the Apple store. It is the latest model of touch, not sure what gen that is but it is only two weeks old. What else can I do to try and get this sorted?

Illass thank you for the reply, but as I said I have done everything on the support page. I even printed off the uninstall instructions as it gave you a rather precise order to do it in and I did check for the folders to see if they had been left, I learnt that when I updated my graphics drivers and still a game said my card wasn't up to scratch, even though my card supported shading 4.0 it only needed 2.0 for the game.
I also printed off the software conflict information otherwise I would have gotten totally lost.
However thank you for the disabling info, as it was getting a tad annoying when I was connecting it to charge up.
I decided to uninstall and reinstall again and low and behold it is recognised again. That makes it the second time I have had to do this to get my touch recognised. However doing this everytime I want to update is going to be rather annoying.
Ah the days of the Nano 2nd gen, and the innoence of those times. Shame some clumsy so-an-so knocked it out of my hand and stepped on it as it was just so simple to use.
