Itunes 11 playlists don't include podcasts!

I rely on a couple of smart playlists and a bit of applescript to populate a playlist for use in the car.
But I can't get any podcast to appear in a smart playlist
I've tried by name=[podcast_name] and genre=podcast and, even, copying all the podcasts to a static playlist (called podtest) and setting my smart playlist to playlist=podtest - but never a podcast appears.
Help!

Fixed - went back to iTunes 10.7 - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4553829?start=30&tstart=0

  • Songs Don't Get Added Correctly To My Nano From My iTunes Playlists.

Some of the songs from my iTunes playlist don't get imported onto my Nano for some reason. I tried over and over--first deleting the playlist, then adding the playlist again to my Nano, but the same songs still don't get added correctly. They show up on the Nano's playlist, but when I try to play the song, it skips them!

The gray dot means the songs didn't get synced...
What's the provenance of the songs?
    What's the format/encoding/bitrate?
If you can’t load a song or other item onto iPod shuffle
The song might have been encoded in a format that iPod shuffle doesn’t support. The following audio file formats are supported by iPod shuffle. These include formats for audiobooks and podcasts:
    AAC (M4A, M4B, M4P) (up to 320 kbps)

  • IPhone not including Podcasts in playlists

I sync all music (only checked songs) on my Iphone with my Itunes, including playlists and podcasts. I have a few playlists on my Itunes that are comprised of both songs and podcasts (songs of the day, etc.), but when I play the same playlist on my Iphone, the podcasts are excluded and only the songs show. In older versions of Itunes it wasn't a problem, so how do I get back to the glory days?

I have a similar set of playlists to yours (music + podcasts), and I recently decided to sort my podcasts as music, by choosing the desired podcasts in itunes, get info> Options> Media Kind= Music.
This might solve your playlist problem, however now the selected tracks will be listed under your music library, and not podcasts.

  • Can I edit the start time for all the podcasts from a single subscription downloaded to my itunes? i.e. want to creat a playlist of all the podcasts I have from a particular show...

I want to creat a playlist of all the podcasts I have from a particular show, want to edit out the first minute on all to skip the intro. Do not want to edit over 200 podcast manually. Is there a solution?

View menu -> Show Status Bar
Then the total play time for any group of tracks you select in the Songs area, for any selected album or for any selected playlist will show at the bottom of the iTunes window as in previous versions.
The ability to open playlists in separate windows was for some unfathomable reason removed in iTunes 11. Whether it will ever come back none of us here can say, but you can express your need for that feature via Apple's feedback page:

The fix was to completely remove all Apple Software following guides in previous posts.
Then download and re-install latest iTunes 64-bit, making sure to Run As Administrator.
This fixed it. Now the next thing seems to be that as I move from one device to another to close and restart iTunes between each one. Treat it gently. It seems to break easily and a lot.

  • Why can I sync some iTunes playlists to the iPod but some other ones don't?

Why can I sync some iTunes playlists to the iPod but some other ones don't? This is unusual - I wonder if the iPod is working correctly but some setting is wrong. Thanks

Connect your iPod to your computer and when it appears in the Source list click on it to show the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and check that your settings are "Sync Music - All songs and playlists" and not "Sync Music - Selected playlists"

  • How to tell iPhone/iTunes I'm done with a podcast

Is there a way to mark a podcast as done on my iPhone or iPod only part way through? I'm using the latest version of iTunes and an iPhone, and I have them set to sync only unplayed episodes. It's great that (for a while) now if I'm part way through a podcast when I sync it stays on my iPhone, but what about when I don't want it to anymore? I decide that episode is boring, I accidentally restarted one I had listened to, or I don't want to listen to the ad at the end. At the moment, I have to try and fast forward until there are just a few seconds left and let those play out. If I scroll too far and it goes all the way to the end it remembers where I was when I started fast forwarding when I sync, but if I go immediately back to the episode and try again it is at the beginning. If I hit the skip button, same thing. I need a "I'm done with this podcast now" button on the mobile device. I don't want to mess with it later when I sync, I want to plug it in and go to bed then and have it be ready for me in the morning. Is there a way?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion, but as I said above I am looking for something I can do from the mobile device. For example, if I forget whether I was half way through the last unmarked episode and begin it playing and it had been complete, it is suddenly remembering my place again. If I sync, it stays on the player. I want to be able to do something right when this happens so I don't need to screw around on the computer when I sync.

  • Itunes is telling me my playlists "don't exist"

A while ago, I got to capacity of songs, and it told me I couldn't update my ipod, and did I want to choose a selection of songs for a playlist, which I agreed to.
This got rid of all my other playlists, and when I tried to get them back it said they didn't exist!
Then, it wiped all my songs on the ipod, but they are still there in the library, and I can't do any updating st all as the playlists don't exist, yet I don't have any playlists now as I deleted them all!
PLEASE HELP, this is highly frustrating I have no songs on my ipod and I have an 8 hour coach journey this coming sunday :S:S:S:S:S:S:S

Simply re-create the playlist you want to use to sync your iPod with, then in your iPod preferences indicate that iTunes is to sync only that checked playlist.

  • IPod Podcast List in iTunes Doesn't Show all Podcasts

    iTunes 11.1.1
    4th gen iPod Shuffle
I just refreshed all podcasts in iTunes.
Hooked up Shuffle to sync, went to Podcast tab & many podcasts that show up via iTunes Podcast section are not there...
I've never noticed this happen before.
    HELP!!
    Thanks

I don't know the cause of the problem you describe.  You may want to report it as a "bug" to Apple using the Feedback web page for iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Also, since this is a problem related to iTunes (the app), and not directly related to using a shuffle, you may get additional replies by posting the question here (in the iTunes for Mac forum category)
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_mac
I can offer a possible "work-around."  On the shuffle's Podcasts "tab" in iTunes, at the bottom of the screen, there is a list called Include Episodes from Playlists.  On this list, you can select playlists in your iTunes library that have podcast episodes.
In your iTunes library, create a new playlist.  You can call it something line "iPod Podcasts," or whatever you want.  Add podcast episodes you want on the shuffle to this playlist.
NOTE:  Click the plus sign at the bottom of the sidebar to create a new playlist.  If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
On this playlist, you can add a mix of episodes from multiple podcasts, and put the episodes in any desired playlist order (by dragging them around on the list or sorting by a column heading).
Back on the shuffle's Podcasts tab, select (checkmark) this playlist under Include Episodes from Playlists.  Click Apply to sync the selection, as well as the playlist itself, to the shuffle.
On the shuffle, you should be able to play the episodes from the separate podcast playlists (using VoiceOver to switch), or from the "iPod Podcasts" playlist.  To play podcasts from a (regular) playlist on a shuffle, you must set the shuffle's power switch to the play-in-order (middle) position.  The episodes play in playlist order.
If that works, I can provide additional info on using Smart Playlists to "automate" the process.  It may actually be more convenient than using the iPod's Podcasts tab to manage podcasts on the shuffle.

  • How to restore *just one iTunes playlist* from Time Machine?

    Hi all --
I'm pretty picky about my iTunes playlists. There are several main ones ("Jazz Lite," "R&B," "Jazz Traditional," etc. etc.) and these playlists can overlap in their coverage/share certain songs.
So last Sunday I realized that I had fat-fingered things and had accidentally deleted the R&B playlist.
If possible I'd like to surgically restore *just that R&B playlist* from Time Machine and include it among all of the other existing playlists.
Although I've searched around on the internet for an answer, everything that has turned up so far seems to involve:
    - restoring ALL playlists from Time Machine
    - older version of iTunes (I'm currently using 11.0.3)
    Your help greatly appreciated!

For posterity's sake, since i had this issue too, i thought i'd post my solution.
Locate and save a copy, locally on your computer, of a library.itl file that would contain the playlist you need. I'd suggest saving to your desktop. name it so you'll recognize it as the old library file.
Quit iTunes if open, and relaunch, holding down the Option key immediately after
    when prompted, select "Choose Library"
Find the file you saved in step 1. this will launch iTunes with all the old playlists and such. Don't worry, it doesn't touch the actual songs themselves, so nothing is lost of from your current library.
Find the playlist(s) you want, right click on them and export. save them as .txt file (again, suggest desktop for ease)
Once all playlists you want to restore are saved, quit iTunes.
Launch iTunes, again pressing Option immediately after
Select "Choose Library" and select the Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Library.itl file. This will restore iTunes to the most current copy of your library
Select File -> Library -> Import Playlist and find the .txt file for your playlist on your desktop. et voila!

  • Is there any way that I can have songs in an iTunes Playlist without having the songs play in my regular music list.  For instance: can I have a Playlist of Christmas songs without having them play in the routine shuffle of my music library?  Thanks -Rog

Select the songs, press CTRL+I to Get Info, on the Options tab set Skip when shuffling to Yes.
If you want to the hide the songs from your main music view you could consider changing the media kind to audiobooks or podcasts if you don't mind the side effect of them showing up there instead.

  • ITunes stops updating podcasts / iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?

    Hi,
My iTunes is set to automatically update podcasts and keep the last five episodes of each podcast.
However, iTunes appears to stop updating podcasts after several (five?) unwatched episodes and gives me an exclamation mark in the podcast overview. Clicking on that, I get the message: "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?"
This is not what I intend... and not  what I  told iTunes to do... (at least this my reading of the below settings)
This stopping is rather less then ideal: (1) if I am going away for two weeks, which I often do, I would still like to have the last five days of news, not the last five days of news back from the date I left, (2) I need to click update for approx. 20 podcast on regular basis, (3) my iPhone is synced to iTunes as soon as I come home, if iTunes does not have the podcasts downloaded, they are not copied over to the iPhone, and the iPhone will attempt to download the episodes via 3G next time I play the podcast on the go, (4) I am mainly using iTunes functions, such as smart playlists and podcasts, through another app (Plex, a fullscreen media player) and it is a pain to have to go to iTunes to manually do things. That is why this bothering me...
How can I get iTunes to behave as intended? (From reading through old posts I know that there is a Doug script adressing this problem, which I have just set up, but I would prefer to use internal settings if possible... maybe I am just missing a setting)
    Thank you for your ideas!

Thank you for the response, Roger!
OK, that's how it is then.
The iTunes podcasts settings should be reworded in that case because it suggest something different from what it does. And, of course, it would be ideal for Apple to make this more flexible and allow users to set up their podcast downloads in their way and not be so motherly (c'mon, Apple, your users are not as dumb as you think, and they have uncapped Internet connections these days anyway)...
Btw., for anyone interested, this is external script I am using now:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=updateexpiredpodcasts
Including the "cron job" setup here:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/2011/12/updated-update-expired-podcasts-v2-2-and-l aunchd-project/
Cannot tell how well it works because I have just set it up, other members of the forum say it works for them...
If anyone knows of in-app solutions, please share...

  • "Itunes has stopped updating your podcast" message -- is there away around?

When new podcasts are downloaded into Itunes, I transfer them straight to my ipod. I don't play them in Itunes.
As a result, I have to tell Itunes that I DO want to continue downloading new files - for every podcast to which I subscribe, on a recurring basis.
Seems to me that transferring the file shows signs of interest - same as playing.
Is there a way to set Itunes to treat a transfer to the ipod the same as playing it?

You're right, there is no way to turn off this asinine, infuriating feature. It's this kind of thing that drove me away from Windows and made me so happy when I got a Mac. I felt like I didn't have to fight the Windows Big Brother anticipating my needs and only allowing me to do things in a way that Windows wanted me to.
Anyways, there is a partial solution, although its pretty sad compared to how easy it would be if Apple included a little checkbox in the options menu that said "Do you want iTunes to stop downloading your podcasts if you listen to them in any other way than on iTunes, even if you listen to them on your (Apple) iPod?". Go to http://www.dougscripts.com and check out the NeedleDrop script. It will let you automatically play 1 second or so of each podcast in your directory. You can then tell iTunes to update your podcasts and it will retrieve all of them, as it should anyways. One downside is that you'll have to run the NeedleDrop script every so often to update the playcount of your podcasts. Another downside, if you're a Windows user, is that the AppleScript will only work on Mac.
As a tangent (read "rant"), iTunes is becoming really annoying lately. For starters, the interface has been looking more and more repulsively Windows-esque for the last few versions. Just recently, when I updated to the latest version of iTunes, it took me a week or so to delete the previous version because there was an application called "iTunes Helper" that wouldn't close. It didn't appear in the list of processes on my computer. Finally I found that it was a startup item in my list of startup programs. After disabling it, I was finally able to delete the old version of iTunes. Now iTunes doesn't update my podcasts if I don't listen to them in a way that iTunes deems fit. What is going on? Ugly interface, hidden processes, uncontrollable "features". Is Apple outsourcing their development to Microsoft or something?
