ITunes 11 sort by within album functionality gone?

Hello, I was wondering about an option that appears to be gone from 11, which I loved in 10. I have always made compilation albums(not a playlist mind you) that contain many songs from various artists. In iTunes 10, I used to be able to open my album and then sort by artist so that within that album all the artists and their songs would be bunched together. Example: I have an album of 60's-early 80's Soul/R&B. It contains many songs from many artists. I used to be able to open that album, sort by artist so say Al Green and all the songs I had from him in that album would show up at the top. Then, of course, everybody else in alphabetical order would follow with their songs. I hope this functionality has not been lost or if so, is there a way around it?

Thanks for the reply.  I was being somewhat sarcastic about my hope that Apple will make changes based on the feedback tool (like with Cover Flow most likely never returning to iTunes, especially with it changed so much in iOS 7), especially not for an issue as isolated as this one.
I forgot about the issue with multiple albums in a year as well, since there's no way to denote which came first, so unless they happen to be in alphabetical order they will appear out of order as well.  I know there's the "Release Date" column option, but AFAIK that is organic to iTunes alone, and does not stick with the ID3 tag of the track.  I've thought of your suggestion before, but guess I just needed a push to abandon the way I was doing it.
As far as editing the sort album values to utilize the dates, or album release orders, I'm aware of them, but with over 1000 albums in my library the time it would take would be rather forbidding.  Just have to keep hoping the small things won't go unnoticed forever!  (Really, if iTunes would pattern itself off the original MusicMatch Jukebox that used to be the standard for iPod syncing, we wouldn't have need of all this discussion!)

  • How can I sort my photos within albums on the iPad? Apple software *****!

The primary reason I got an iPad was to use it as a portfolio of my photography. How is it possible that with Apple software you can't easily sort photos in a custom order within albums?!? I've heard there is a way to use Dropbox to work around (ignore) Apple software. Any help? If Apple engineers are reading this, can you please address this? And can we not use something called iTunes to work with pictures? No sense here.

It's a lot easier with Photo Manager Pro.

  • Sort albums by descending year - itunes unable to play album

I prefer my albums to be displayed in itunes with the latest albums first.  So I use grid view albums and set 'sort by' to 'descending'.
When i select an album to play it will play the first track but the track numbers are ALSO in descending order and when clicking next it doesn't play the next track.  If I go into the album and click next, the album ends because it thinks the first track of the album is the last.
This is because the track numberings are also in descending order.
Why would itunes do this?  Why are not these functions mutually exclusive?
This is a major ridiculous flaw in itunes that doens't allow you to play your latest albums in order.
You are forced to have your 1967 classical album at the top of your itunes if you want to play your albums with the track numbers in order and all your latest albums down the bottom.
I'm sure this has been posted before, but any comments, suggestions, feedback from apple themselves, about this problem appreciated.

seems this is a problem people have complained about for years without any resolve to it.  Unbelievable.  2012 and you can't play your latest albums in itunes, hah, what a joke

  • Sort Albums - within albums - by title

    Hi there.
When I import a compilation into iTunes, one album with different artists, I get an image for every track instead of just one image for the album. It's irritating as I like to keep my library tidy and have just one album image per album.
When in grid view, I right click on "album" and have the option of sorting albums, but the "within album" section is greyed out with the default "by artist" ticked. How do I access this menu in order to tick "by title"?
Or is there another way of compiling all the different artists and tracks under one single album?

Fantastic! Thanks for that, and just to help you out,VWJettaIpod, here is the thing to do:
select all your tracks that should come under one album only, get info, in the "multiple information" box, choose "options", tick "part of a compilation" and choose "yes", that's it!
    Thanks again tt2.

I highlight "genre" in my itunes library and it is sorted thus.  The secondary sort is automatically "artist".  I want the secondary sort to be "album".  How do I accomplish this?

    Can't do it.
You can use the browser (iTunes menu view > Browser) select a genre then sort by Album.

  • Sorting songs within an album

I am hoping to get some help on sorting.
Within my I-Tunes library I have the albums sorted the way I like. However, within an album I cannot seem to control the order in which the individual music tracks appear.
For example, I have merged the selections from 2 separate CDs into a single album. When I do that the tracks (1-12) from Disc 2 are listed ahead of the tracks (1-12) from Disc 1. I've tried adjusted one/both of the track numbers/disc numbers for the discs but this did not impact the order in which the tracks appeared.
Does anyone have a solution on how to control the order?

See Grouping tracks into albums for more details, in particular the topic One cover for multi-disc album.

  • Sorting songs by 'Album by Artist/Year' bug in iTunes 9.0

As the title suggests, there is a massive bug in the new iTunes when sorting songs by 'Album by Artist/Year.'
Pretty much, it is not separating different discs from the same album. In a 2 disc CD, it goes like this:
    Disc 1, Track 1
    Disc 2, Track 1
    Disc 1, Track 2
    Disc 2, Track 2
It is extremely annoying, a major oversight from Apple.
    I have attached a screenshot: http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/3134/itunesbug.jpg

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • When I down load a CD Itunes seems to split the CD into two or more albums. I get the songs but they sort into multiple albums of the same name.

I just down loaded Stones "Forty Licks" into iTunes in my computer.
In Itunes I see 4 albums 2 for disc 1 and 2 for disc 2.
The songs are spread between the albims so I can't play the entire album at once.
Ideas on how to better download or on how to resort I tunes to get the songs all on one album.

Yes ensure that the Album Artist entry is the same for all tracks eg Various Artists or Artist & Friends. Whatever you want just has to be the same

  • ITunes sort 'Album by artist/year' problems

I've been having problems sorting _some_ albums. I'll give you a specific example:
I rip Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Concert in Central Park' which has 19 tracks. I want them to play in continuous mode, and in order.
I show track number in the columns, make sure all the tracks are of the same album and artist and I don't specify and sort options.
Now I click on the column header 'Album by Artist/Year' and I see that track 16 is first followed by 18, 19 then 1,2,3, etc.
I'm not sure why 16,18 and 19 are out of order, but they are and I don't know what other field it is using to apply this sort order since I've turned off the sort fields. I should say that I think the sort fields are turned off since I selected all tracks, hit command-I and made sure that the artist and album are the same, then went over to the sorting tab and selected each checkbox and made sure that the field was blank. Clicked on OK, then went into each track one at a time and verified that the general info and sort info were as I specified.
If I change the sort column to be just 'Album' then it sorts correctly - I think that the year is messed up, so I add the year column to the display and see that it is 1982. I click on the year and the sort is just fine. I set it back to 'Album by Artist/Year' and the same bizzare sort shows up. The same mis-sort shows with 'Album by Artist' so I do a check on the artist name (even looking for leading or trailing spaces - nothing).
I could probably delete the album and re-rip it, but I would rather find out why the sort is messed up so I can correct this problem if/when it shows up again. I'm aware that I have a few other albums with similar problems.
    Thanks,
    -Mark

    Reply to my own question.
In the sidebar a similar question was asked (if I could learn how to post the right question in the first place I probably would have found it).
I reset the disc number then the tracks showed up in the correct sort order. I'm pretty sure that the tracks had disc number 1 of 1 before, now they just have _ of _  (blank of blank).

  • Is there any way to group albums in Itunes 11 in the album view?  If not will the function be restored in future updates because it was a feature I enjoyed.

  • How to sort songs by Album artist and song number?

    System: +OS X 10.5 updated to 10.5.2 . iTunes 7.6+
I have a CD "+Cafe Del Mar - Volume 01+". Added songs to Library. Every track has different Artist. So, I have 12 songs with individual Name and Artist. Then have put value "+Volume 01+" as Album in File Info and Album Artist as "+Cafe Del Mar+". This way songs are automatically grouped together whenever I sort my library by Album or Album Artist.
Unfortunately in latter case (sorting by Album Artist) iTunes uses Artist field instead of Song Number within the Album to sort tracks. Here are links to screenshots I made to show what we are talking about here:

How can I fix it and make iTunes to sort by Track Number within the same album even if I sort things by Album Artist?

    From MacOSHints:
How to use iTunes 7 new Album Artist field
Mon, Sep 18 '06 at 7:30AM PDT • Submitted by stevebr
iTunes 7 thinks of an album by a performer (call the performer XYZ), where one or more tracks are by "XYZ featuring ABC" or "XYZ and ABC," as separate albums. In the past, the only workaround was to set the album as a compilation to avoid this, but this is an incomplete solution, and it had the side effect of the album not being classified or filed properly.
Enter the "Album Artist" tag in iTunes 7. Set this tag (via Get Info with all all tracks of the album selected) to the main artist's name, and the album will be unified.

  • Sort by Artist - Album - Track Number

I could use some help pls. I have recently reinstalled and now all of a sudden iTunes is acting stupid. I want to sort by Artist -> Album -> Track Number. What is happening is it's sorting by Artist -> Album but the Track Numbers are backwards (listed 10 to 1).
Before you say it, it is NOT a tag issue!! I just spent the last two hours staring at a single album. Every instance of artist/album artist/disk x of y/year/genre/etc/etc are IDENTICAL. Every instance of everything that is not unique is absolutely identical!!
As a side note...does anyone know why Apple refuses to fix the bug in iTunes where mouse wheel scrolling has never worked?
    Thanks...

Click on the Artist album header.
In the right side of the Artist album column header is a small triangle.
Click it so it points up. This will sort the albums track 1 thru track 10.
If the trianlge is pointing down, it will sort track 10 to track 1.
I click Artist with the arrow DEscending.
It's a triangle, not an arrow. The top of the triangle is smaller and the bottom is larger, just like the sort. Or vice-versa.
This used to automatically sort each Album under each Artist and within each Album the Tracks would be sorted numerically (1->10).
No, it has never worked as you suggest.

Past experience suggests that iTunes doesn't handle files with multiple tags well. I've not worked out which tag gets read when there are multiple tags but I've seen cases where iTunes can update one while reading back unchanged data fom the other.
At the file level iTunes will organize the files first by Album Artist, or if blank, Artist, or if blank use Unknown Artist. If the tracks have the custom iTunes property Part of a Compilation = True then they get stored in the Compilations folder instead of under their artist.
The next layer of folders is based on Album title or Unknown Album if none given.
FIles are stored in the format [[<Disc> ]## ]<Name>.<Ext> where leading disc numbers are omitted if the the disc no. reads 1 of 1 or 1 of <Blank>.
Tracks with the same Album Artist or Artist and the same Album title should be grouped together in iTunes as albums.
Within the iTunes interface sorting is based on the first non-empty value from Sort Album Artist > Album Artist > Sort Artist > Artist and Sort Album > Album.
See Grouping tracks into albums for more info.

  • ITunes Sorting Issue - By numbers? (not "track numbers")

How can I get iTunes to sort using the defaulted numbers in List View. The header cannot be clicked in List View, but can in Grid View. Is there any way it can be clicked or tricked into sorting using them? It's very handy. Thanks.

If you click on any column header, it will sort the entire library in numerical or alphabetical order based on the listing of whatever column header has been clicked on.
So if you click on "Name", you will get:
    2 Minutes To Midnight - Iron Maiden - 9 of 16
    8 Mile Road - Grant Lee Buffalo - 9 of 14
    A Bad Night - Cat Stevens - 19 of 19
    Badlands - Bruce Springsteen - 1 of 10
    Classico - Tenacious D - 2 of 15
    etc.
If you click on "Artist" then the exact same Library will be re-ordered as:
    Badlands - Bruce Springsteen - 1 of 10
    A Bad Night - Cat Stevens - 19 of 19
    8 Mile Road - Grant Lee Buffalo - 9 of 14
    2 Minutes To Midnight - Iron Maiden - 9 of 16
    Classico - Tenacious D - 2 of 15
    etc.
By default, iTunes should be recognising the "Artist" column as the main sorting definer, with album track numbers being the secondary sorting consideration within artists.
If for some reason your sorting order has fallen foul of this, then to get it back on track, firstclick on the "Track #" header, to sort your songs by track number: 1 of 10, 2 of 10, 3 of 10, etc. and then click on "Artist".
This should get it back to how you want it.
If this [still] isn't working for you, then you need to perhaps check that your songs are tagged correctly. Make sure that all tracks from the same album all have the track numbers filled in, in both the first and second fields in the "Track Number" spaces, ie: X of X.
