ITunes 12.1 update fails

I have been trying to install the update from iTunes 12.0.1 to iTunes 12.1.  For some reason the update fails and I seem to be stuck with iTunes 12.0.1 and the app store telling my permanently that I need the update.
I have tried to delete iTunes so that I can download afresh but I get a message iTunes is required by OSX and can not be deleted.  I am currently using Yosemite OS.
I have tried repairing file permissions but have had no success in installing this update.  Does any one have any idea as to how I can fix this please?

As Peter says, iTunes 12.0.1 is the latest.
Can you post a picture of this message from the App Store?

If the above doesn’t do the trick entirely, then use the instructions in the following as it applies to the version of Windows you are using:

  • ITunes 10.4 update fails with error "A program required for this install to complete could not be run."

Completely removing iTunes, QT, etc. made no difference. Win7 32 bit SP1, Home Premium. My user account is Administrator; running the installer "as Administrator" (r-click..) also fails. The error text is less than helpful... anyone else seen this one?

First try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software using the following or the link within it that applies to XP.

  • Itunes 12.01 update fails

    Hmmm What gives?
I updated Itunes to 12.01 several times on my Yosemite Macbook, but the update ends, and iTunes keeps sitting at 12.00.140.
No error message, no nothing, just a big table of "updates" in my App Store, but none of them seems to have gotten through; itunes and the App Store are still mentioning that there are updates available, but I can't seem to be able to update completely
    Any clues?
    Jan-Joost

    Hi Jan-Joost,
I was having the exact same problem. I found this solution on another thread, tried it and it worked. The iTunes download that is coming from the App Store must be corrupted. Go to Apple.com and find the "download iTunes now" page and download it directly from there. Take it from your "Downloads" folder and install as normal.

  • Latest update failed, computer won't even start up

Downloaded the latest update (don't know which one, it was just a few days ago; system update and iTunes). The update failed and locked up. Upon shutdown, the computer will not start up. All that comes up is the grey apple and the spinning circle of lines (for hours). It's a 3 month old 27" quad-core iMac. I have tried starting up from the DVD and re-installing the system, but it fails saying there are essential files that it can't install. Disk Utilities says that it appears the disk is fine. Repair permissions had an error that it couldn't fix. Also, tried resetting PRAM. Disk Warrior DVD didn't start it up. Do you have any suggestions? I am not Terminal savy. Thanks.

    G'day Blaise,
Do you have a Time Machine (or other) backup of your System from just before the update?
If so, then you can boot from the installation DVD, and then select ["Restore System From Backup"|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html].
If not, then you may be forced to Erase your disk and fully reinstall OS X using the installation DVD. Follow [these instructions|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3910] if you wish to do that. (Note that it will delete your data).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

I attempted to update iTunes yesterday.  The update failed.  iTunes now won't open and displays an error message that the program isn't localized and needs to be run in the English version.  I'm in the US and the computer and program has never been used in another language.  I tried reinstalling the full download for the new version and that failed as well.  I logged out; shut down; restarted; retried the update; etc.  Still no luck and the same message.  Thoughts?

  • ITunes 10.5.3 update failes to install

    Window 7 64-bit currently running iTunes10.5.2.11
Every time i try and run the update for iTunes 10.5.3.3 x64 installer, it goes so far as to ask where to install (yes I ran the download manually after the automatic update failed a few times).
Each time it failes almost immeadiately with the error:
"The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured.
Errors occured during installation. Your system has not been modified.
Please run the installer again, or click Finish to exit."
    I noticed a few things.
    a) The version number in about iTunes does not show the x64 after it like the splash screen for 10.5.3
    b) My iTunes is installed in Program Files (x86) which is where 32 bit versions generally get installed.
So do I currently have the 32 bit version installed and the auto installer is tring to update it to the 64 bit and that is why it fails?
I've tried run the install to Program Files instead of Program Files (x86). Fails just the same. Do I need to uninstall iTunes and reinstall to get the update to work?
Or is the 10.5.3 install just borked?

Try downloading the package for new installs. the update package failed, but the new install package worked for me without any trouble.
    History:
I began this trouble shooting exercise by selecting Download Only through the Apple Update applet. Running the msi manually did not resolve the problem. In fact, it was more frustrating because the download package would disappear after running even though it failed, and I had to download it again. "Cleanup" I suppose. <frown>
I followed advice to remove the Apple Software Update program, reboot and re-run the msi. That did not resolve the failure.
I then followed advice to set permissions for Administrators on registry key HKLM\Software\Micorosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Com ponents
then reboot and run the update msi again. This also did not resolve the failure.
I downloaded the installer from the Apple download site as though it were a fresh install, and - voila! - it installed correctly and all content and settings were preserved. Hopefully that is all that is needed, not the steps above. Let me know! http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • Itunes update failed on 2 computers, couldn't find msvcr80.dll files. Now have no itunes at all

iTunes update failed on both computers. Couldn't find msvcr80.dll, now I have no iTunes at all. Is it iTunes or the computers?

I did NOT move the other folders (Album Artwork, Mobile Applications, Playlists, Previous iTunes Libraries) or files (iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras, iTunes Library Genius, iTunes Music Library) that are located inside the Music/iTunes folders.
should be no problem. i'm doing this also.
Everything was working fine on both computers - Consolidated the library on the external drive and did the Change the location of the iTunes Media folder in Preferences on both computers, no problem.
However I added two movies and a few songs to my desktop Mac yesterday - all showed up and played fine after adding them - but when I plug the external drive into my laptop, the new additions don't appear in the library.
if you're purchasing content from the iTMS, you could use _*Home Sharing*_ to automatically add new content to all machines on your local network.
Am I right in guessing that it is because the iTunes Library file on the laptop isn't the same as the one on the desktop computer?
    yes.
Is there a way to add them to the library listing on the laptop? If yes, is that something I need to do every time I connect the external drive to the laptop if I've added things from the desktop computer (I never add stuff on the laptop).
basically, yes. however, there's _*Home Sharing*_ and ... see below.
Should I have put the entire iTunes folder - files, folder and media - onto the external drive?
that's one possibility, however, only one Mac @ a time could access that library. there are other options:

  • HT201413 itunes update failed - can't get past "Apple mobile device failed to start"

    Any help would be appreciated:
I opened itunes today and got the standard needs-to-update message, so I let it do its thing.  Rather than update like usual, it stopped and said there was an error and it failed to finish (didn't copy that one down).  I tried clicking on the desktop link, but it said there was something missing and I should reinstall it.
I went and uninstalled it, then went to the itunes site and downloaded the latest version, and now I'm stuck with this:
"Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
Then I have the option to abort, retry, or ignore.  I can't ignore it 'cause it brings me back there, and retry does the same.  Abort just cancels the whole install.
I looked up "Apple Mobile Device" but the help tips just tell me to stop it and start it again, but it never started.  I tried to start it, but I get this:
"Windows could not start the Apple Mobile Device service on Local Computer.  Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
Where do I go from here?  It has always just...updated.  I have no idea where it's getting this problem from.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
See also HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP or HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    and paste into:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error.

  • HT1923 My itunes will not update, and i got a message saying that MSVCR80.II is missing from my computer.  Try reinstalling.  When i try, i get Sevic apple mobile device failed, verify your priveledges with ignore, retry and abort. Still wont download.

My itunes will not update.  I get a message that is saying that MSVCR80.II Is missing from your computer,   Try reinstalling to fix this problem.  So when i tried to reinstall, it says itunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall error 7 (windows err 126)  Then when i tried to reinstall i get this....Service applemovile device failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient priveledges to start service...the I see  abort, retry and ignore....when I hit retry, it sill fails and i get the same message again.  How do I fix it?  Will I lose all my music if I delete it all and reinstall itunes?  I haven't tried that yet.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • Apple tv update failed. iTunes doesn't recognise the TV

Well Apple has ruined my night. The update failed and I've tried to restore it via iTunes but even when it is plugged in, iTunes doesn't recognise it. Anyone have any answers on how to restore this?

Thanks very much. I followed everything you said, made sure I didn't plug the power in until I'd connected the USB cable, plugged the power in, the Mac made the USB connected sound and then I opened iTunes. It is still not there. I've got a feeling this will be a long trip to the Apple Store
