ITunes 12 incompatible with Windows Vista Data Execution Prevention FIX

I have been getting a "Vista Data
Execution Prevention" error message whenever I closed iTunes for months
now, and after reading through a few forums, I have found a solution
that works.  It only takes two minutes.  Long story short:
1) Start iTunes
2) Open the Windows Task Manager
3) Go to the "Proccess" Tab
4) Find "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32" and right click on it.
5) Select "Properties" from the drop down menu
6) Go to the "Compatibility" Tab
7) Check the Box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
8) If "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" is not in the field below, click on the down arrow and select said option.
9) Click on "OK" to close the window.
10) Close the iTunes application
11) Reopen the iTunes application
12) Close the iTunes application again.
At this point you should not see anymore "Vista Data Execution Prevention" error messages when you close iTunes!
P.S.
If you want to go back and de-select running
"AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32" in Windows XP Compatibility mode, you
can.  Though this part is totally optional.  The next time you close
iTunes, you will get one last "Vista Data Execution Prevention" error
message, but don't worry, it will be the last one.  Try opening iTunes
again and then closing it, and TaDa, no more error messages.  I don't
know why running AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32 in compatibility mode
JUST ONCE solves the problem, but it worked for me.

Welcome tocguy. If I may ask you a question: How much memory does your Vista x64 PC have? I have 3 GB, which is the maximum that 32-bit Vista can recognize, but I seem to recall that 64-bit Vista can utilize much more than that, and wonder if that might be why 64-bit users are scarce in the 11.2 thread.
I have now also done a truly clean reinstall, deleting Apple folders in ProgramData and each user account's AppData folder, and even the iTunes folders in each user's Music folder. Of course I moved my iTunes Media folder to a safe location first, and one iTunes Library backup file suitable for version 11.1.5. I also cleaned the registry. The most I can say is that I sometimes don't get a BEX upon closing iTunes now, but usually I do. I deselected one default setting during installation, "Use iTunes as the default player for audio files." (If an audio file can be opened by Media Player 11, why would I want to open it in a program that gives me a BEX nearly every time I use it? Too bad my AAC files purchased at iTunes Store can't be opened by WMP, but I certainly won't be buying any more of those now.) My advice to other Vista users: Don't waste your time reinstalling, it won't solve the DEP problem.
Ran the Program Compatibility Wizard to run iTunes in XP SP2 compatibility mode, but abandoned that idea after the first BEX.
Thought I was onto something when I tried the registry fix at http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2008/06/17/to-dep-or-not-to-dep.aspx. Johnny DEP thought he was so slick when he saw iTunes listed as an exception in his DEP tab, but there was one minor problem (yes I did reboot):
Oh well, it's probably a bad idea to allow buffer overruns anyway. The fact that this didn't work causes me to think that Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit or Application Compatibility Toolkit would also be a waste of time. Vista users who wish to avoid BEX errors can either downgrade their iTunes (free) or upgrade their Windows (not free).

I just did a clean install of iTunes 12.0.1 after removing 11.4 and other components as described in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 with 3 GB RAM. Soon after closing the iTunes GUI, I get a Data Execution Prevention notification:
I have already tested with every DEP setting except AlwaysOff, which would globally disable an important Windows security feature and is therefore not to be recommended. The problem is apparently a Buffer Overflow Exception. Here are the details from one instance:

This is actually not a new problem. As an experienced user of 32-bit Vista, I would have to say that the last compatible iTunes version was 11.1.5. See also Windows Vista problem reports after latest Itunes 11.2 update.

I am unable to access iTunes.  Receive error regarding data execution prevention.  I've changed the Performance Options to exclude DEP for iTunes and I've tried unloading/reloading.  Still no success.  Suggestions?

Try updating your QuickTime to the most recent version. Does that clear up the DEP errors in iTunes?

  • Can't run itunes on Vista - Data Execution Prevention issue

Have installed iTunes on vista successfully. When I try to launch, was prompted to re-install iTunes again... digged a bit and came across this Data Execution Prevention issue...
Any idea how to solve this issue?

The following polydorus post is a good place to start with a DEP error:

  • Unable to open Itunes in Vista - data execution prevention (DEP)

I'm unable to open itunes on my computer. I can install it but not open it. It says that the data execution prevention has stopped the running of the program. I have tried to change the settings of the data execution program, but it will not allow me to accept itunes - as it says that DEP has to be activated for itunes and cannot be deactivated. What do I do?

One temporary solution is to run itunes through XP rather than vista.
To do this go to the program icon (makes sure its not a shortcut, and the actual program icon, you can find this in your program files if its on on your desktop)
    sideclick on the icon
    go to properties
    compatibility tab
check Windows XP service pack 2
    tell it to apply
This should allow you to use itunes

  • TS3694 itunes will not install on my laptop any more. The latest update seems incompatible with Windows Vista.

The latest iTunes update will not install on my HP laptop with Windows Vista. There is a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error message and it will not load or set p.

I reinstall Quicktime and it would not launch and gave me the same error messages.
We'd better check to see if some other application has stashed old versions of QuickTime componentry down in your system files.
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, open the "System32" folder.
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • Cannot open iTunes 8 with Windows Vista Home Premium

Hopefully someone here can help me with my problem. I have a new Ipod Touch that needs itunes 8 to work. I have a new HP PC with Windows Vista Home Premium. The problem I'm having is: itunes & quicktime will download successfully onto my computer, but after download will not open. I receive the error message "itunes has stopped working...A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I have tried to open them from desktop & from programs ...will not work. I was using itunes 7 with no problems, but after upgrade to the new version (itunes 8) I started having this problem. Here are a few of the things I have tried so far with help from just about every tech support I could find: uninstall & reinstall itunes (tried this several times..didn't help, but itunes installs successfully each time)...try installing quicktime & itunes separately (didn't help)..disable firewall & virus protection (didn't help)...turn off Data Execution Prevention (DEP) (didn't help)...tried saving software to discs & installing itunes that way (didn't help)...I have updated all of my software including windows vista...I've run virus checks...& pretty much run checks on anything else I could find. I occasionally get the same error message when I try to open Rhapsody, but not every time. I'm thinking of using my backup discs & restoring my computer to factory settings. To do that would be a last resort, but I am getting pretty close to desperate. Does anyone think restoring it would help? If anyone has any ideas for me to try I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much.

You need to to check to see if your Quicktime works normally. Itunes will not work if QUicktime doesn't.
If Quicktime doesn't work, describe what happens with any error message in full.
Go to your control panel and try to start QUicktime preferences. In XP you need to be in classic view to see it, I am not sure about Vista.
Give the full text of any error message.
Have you installed any of the following:
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec, WinAVI video converter, Mpcstar
If so uninstall them, they are bad news for Quicktime.
    Report back with your results.
If Quicktime is OK have you seen the Apple troubleshooting article for launch failure, I guess you have probably done quite a bit of it anyway, but is worth going through it systematically:

  • Itunes problem with windows Vista

ok i bought my touchsmart tx2 1025 with windows vista ultimate 64 bit and well i ve noticed that ..well since this is my third time i exchange this computer and i noticed there was a problem with the speakers when i was playing music that anytime during a song i would get this distorted sound like when u put a lot of volume in ipod headphones that it sounds like a crack. Well that happened in my computer even with low volumes.
However I played two times the same song on itunes and two times on windows media player.
Every single time on itunes the sound came as if the speakers were about to blow... like a crack..
Every single time on Windows media player it never sounded like that.
So i am pretty sure its an itunes problem. Does anyone know how to fix this.. i would rather use itunes than windows media player but i really hate the sound it makes sometimes because it shows about 2 to 3 times during one song.

It's possible that the song your playing does indeed have a little audio distortion in it, some media players are capable of filtering it out in a silent way, others play a beep, hence with one song I have, if i play it in windows media player it goes on and then for a split second theres a beep, iTunes doesent seem to do it, so instead of filtering out the missing data, it plays it.
This is more likley a problem with the song than iTunes

Itunes versions 7.1 and 7.2 do not work with windows vista correctly. Both versions interfere with uploading the DVD drive when booting up the computer. The DVD drive can not start.

  • Is iTunes 8 still incompatible with Windows Vista?

When I updated my computer to Windows Vista, iTunes always crashed the computer. I know this is a common problem. So I just downloaded iTunes 6 and have been using that for a couple of weeks. But when I try to load CDs onto iTunes now, as soon as I press the import button a Windows message comes up saying "iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Then it tries to get me to download the new version of itunes.
I would like to know either of two things:
    1. Are Vista and the newest iTunes version still having problems? Should I be ok to download the new version?
    And if not,
    2. How do i fix the problem with iTunes 6, to get it to load my CDs?
    any help, guys? thanks.

ITunes 8 runs fine on my Vista laptop. So did version 7. I think Apple announced Vista compatibility many months ago, and you should have nothing to fear.
Be sure to search for NOD32 fixes if you happen to run that antivirus program. Many of us NOD32 users were blaming Vista for crashes that turned out to be security conflicts with NOD32. The maker, Eset, has a page on the fix.
